the Capitol City MG Club. Marilyn and I had to
laugh at one point in the rallye where Alan had
us looping around and coming back to an
intersection – there were four cars arriving
from different directions, two turning left and
two turning right and all of us checking our
instructions to make sure we had not made a
wrong turn somewhere! An all you can eat
catfish dinner was waiting for us back at the
hotel finish point and we continued the
“tailgate party” by giving away door prizes for
correct answers to some British slang
questions. Anyone know what “tickety-boo”
means to the average Brit? We did not find
out until the awards ceremony the next day
that HCTC member Carol Pennington and her
navigator Maureen “Mars” Bucek had
mastered the rallye and taken first place.
Sliding safely into second was HCTC member
Andy Bruner and his navigator, daughter Katie
Katie.

A
nother year has come and gone on the
biggest British Car Show in Central
Texas. Although it is more fun to go to
someone else’s show and concentrate on having
a good time, it is a real pleasure to be a part
of the team that produces this show every
year. I know that I saw a lot of familiar faces
and I hope everyone that wanted to was able
to attend. Some of the drivers that showed
up early were interviewed by News8 television.
I talked to the reporter afterward and she
said it made for great TV – lots of visuals of
pretty cars and enthusiastic owners willing to
talk about them! Imagine that.
However, these were not the only winners from
the HCTC. Our club was well represented by
trophies taken in TR2-TR3B Mike and Nel
McPhail 2nd and Ron Harrison 3rd, TR4-TR250
Marilyn and Bob Skewis 1st and future
member Chip McElroy 3rd, Spitfire George
Montgomery 2nd, and GT Richard Ceraldi 2nd.
Our diverse group of members took trophies in
Austin Healey, XJ Jaguar, Land Rover, New
Mini and Diamond in the Rough Classes (please
see the complete listing on the following
pages). Finally, the awards were topped off
with HCTC members Sam and Val Emrick
Saturday afternoon was filled with
registration duties, followed by a fun rallye

The Hill Country Triumph Club, the 50th Chapter of the
Vintage Triumph Register (VTR), was founded in 1990 to bring
together the owners of Triumph automobiles in the Central
Texas area surrounding Austin. In 1991, the membership decided to include other British car fans as associates due to lack
of other clubs in our area that represent some of the other
marques. As owners and lovers of our unique types of cars, we
have a special kinship, which draws us together. Membership is
open to anyone who is a British car enthusiast, with or without
a car.

Annual dues are just $15.00 per family group or address per
year. See the membership form on the back page. We have
dinner meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and at least
one other event each month. We encourage you to join and
support us, even if you don’t drive your car regularly. We also
offer technical assistance if needed. One goal of the club is to
help its members keep their cars on the road. Please call one of
the club officers listed in the newsletter for more information
about club benefits and spread the word about our club to
others.
The RAGTOP is published monthly by the Hill Country Triumph Club. Material within may be freely reproduced providing Ragtop and the authors are credited. Any and all newsletter
contributions are welcome. Deadline for submissions is four

Let's do a BBQ run to the Salt Lick on
Saturday 10-23. Depart Jim's parking lot in
Oak Hill at 11AM for a scenic drive. Get
there about noon.

he September meeting was scheduled to be
held at Schlotzsky’s Deli on Parmer and
IH35. Well, a group of us arrived early, and
quickly found out that they still don’t sell adult
beverages. As you might guess, we made the
decision to move the meeting and ended up at
Logan’s Roadhouse. A good time was had by all!
Attendees were Ron Harrison, Bob and
Barbara Kramer in their TR6, Roger Bolick,
Mike and Nel McPhail in their Jag, David
Schlosser, Don Couch is his Freelander,
Warren Cole and Yolanda, Andy Bruner and
daughter Melanie in their Spitfire, and Dan
Julien, among others I’ve probably forgotten.

Bob Kramer once again chaired the meeting in
Bob Skewis’ absence. He began with a toast to
Matt Baker, a member who died tragically last
year, and noted that the club is donating
several thousand dollars to his alma mater. We
won’t forget you Matt.
November 7 is the All British Car Day in
Boerne, which will be held at the town square.
Registration will begin at 9 AM; participants
choice judging will be from 10 AM to 1PM; and
the awards presentation will be at 2 PM. More
details can be obtained from Mike McPhail. Be
there or be square!

Triumph Trademarks
In 1885, German-born
Siegfried Bettmann set up a
London business exporting
Birmingham-made cycles
under his own ‘Triumph’
brand. This soon led to the
Coventry-based Triumph Cycle Company of
1889 and Triumph motorcycles from 1901.
the nose of the car, and it also appeared as
a simple graphic in sales literature. This
harked back to 1950s advertising of Triumph TR sporting successes. For the very
last TR7 models of 1981 and 82, built at
Solihull, a proper chrome-rimmed version of
the laurel-leaf badge adorned the front.
The Triumph Laurel Leaves design, an embryonic form of which appeared on steering
wheels of some Triumphs in the early
1970's, did not appear formally until 1978.
The first Triumph four wheel car, the 10/
20, emerged in 1923, bearing the distinctive Triumph ‘Globe’ badge that endured
until the 1960s, the last applications being
on the hubcaps of cars like the 1963 Triumph 2000 and the 1965 Triumph 1300.
Triumph built some attractive sports cars
and sporting saloons between the wars but
wentinto receivershipthree years after
the motorcycle side was hived off in 1936.
Standard’s MD, Sir John Black,bought up
the rights to the Triumph cars name in
1945.
Used on advertising material for all Triumphs, it appeared on the Dolomite and
TR7 and was last seen on the Triumph
Acclaim until production ceased in 1984.
From its inception, the
Triumph Stag was fitted
with this unique badge.
Appearing on the grille of
the car and on associated
booklets throughout its
production life, it remained
the symbol of a high quality sports car with
few rivals in terms of price and refinement.
From the 1953 TR2 onward, the
main Triumph badge was a derivative of the post-war Standard ‘Shield’ device. Leyland
took over Standard Triumph in
1961, and after the formation of
British Leyland in 1968, the Leyland roundel supplanted previous Triumph logos, even
though the marque name itself continued.
The last production car to bear the 'Stag'
badge was produced in June 1977.

1977, he set about reversing the ‘Leylandisation’
process, turning the emphasis back to the
marques. When the Speke
factory was closed, and the TR7 build
moved to Canley, a large new Triumph vinyl
logo, using laurel leaves, was adopted for

run since 1997. Includes spare rear bumper

RACE CAR
It is red, with new convertible top (black), has a red
hardtop.
The gentleman who owned it before me
reupholstered the seats, added new carpet and has
been newly painted. I am able to use it every day.
Have had professional mechanic work on it.
Since September:

New master cylinder
New starter
Front wheels bearing repacked/replaced
new muffler/tailpipe repair.
New tires
Car really runs well.
Heater works.
New stereo system
Rear axle and bearing replaced
w/a little over 48,000 miles
Have been using it daily, it runs great. It’s a real
looker and being a teen from the 70’s get a real kick
with the looks and questions and reminiscing. That’s
fun. Unfortunately, I also have 3 large dogs and must
find a larger vehicle.
