Rieter – The Sound Choice! 3 4 Development & Engineering Center Development & Engineering Center Adding values to vehicles Total Vehicle Approach Innovation is a critical competitive factor. Our drive for innovation and our experience enable us to contribute to making our customers’ products even more successful. The development of multifunctional components, a significant trend in the automotive sector, is one example of this. All our development activities are characterized by an integrated approach, the ‘Total Vehicle Approach’. To assure their optimal functionality, we engineer all components in terms of comfort, weight, cost and design for the vehicle as a whole and for the various vehicle structures. In our Development & Engineering Center, around 100 specialists develop, test and optimize new products and solutions in intensive cooperation with our customers. Our core competences in vehicle acoustics, thermal management and aerodynamics, together with our specific know-how, form the ideal basis for this. Our in-depth knowledge and experience of plastics, fibers, composite materials and metals, are the driving force behind our coordinated, innovative solutions. These are customized to our customers needs and give added value to their vehicles. The area of responsibility of the Development & Engineering Center extends to the complete development of systems and components for our customers. All areas of application in the vehicle are taken into account in this process: •Engine bay •Underbody •Interior floor •Interior trim •Trunk •Body treatment Our cooperation with our customers is also organized in the same integrated way. We provide consistent and systematic project management, from the initial concept phase right through the start of production – supported by our Program Management skills and organization. 5 6 Development & Engineering Center Development & Engineering Center A wide range of tools for development Focus on the customer – Program Management We adopt an integral, multidimensional strategy in the development of new products and the optimization of existing solutions. This allows us to combine a number of development objectives and to take account of the following five main axes: Developing new solutions jointly with our customers is a process of continuous innovation. Our Program Management ensures that this process proceeds in an optimal manner. Targets can thus be achieved at the right time, at the agreed costs, and with the best possible results. •Simulation and numerical methods •Environmentally friendly products and processes •Comfort and style •Integration and multifunctionality •Weight and fuel efficiency Clearly defined targets and the definition of the necessary resources provide a solid base from which to control the process of innovation. The planning and implementation of our activities builds up on this base, and progress is monitored continuously with a variety of control mechanisms. To achieve these objectives, our Devel opment & Engineering Center can count on a wide range of the latest simulation methods, testing and development tools. We gain valuable insights in the course of our intensive testing processes: •Material tests in the laboratory, e.g. determination of mechanical material characteristics • Functional tests on the vehicle, e.g. endurance test, water wading test, stone impact test Communication and coordination are vitally important in this. They offer an assurance that project-specific information is available to all concerned, correctly understood by everyone, and regularly updated. They build a bridge between the various specialist areas involved in multidisciplinary projects and generally serve the purpose of harmonizing timing, costs and resources in an optimal fashion. Program Management at Rieter makes a major contribution to the achievement – jointly with our customers – of our shared development objectives even more rapidly and more efficiently. Program Completion 7 8 Heatshield production Heatshield production Solutions for thermal management Heatshields with made-to-measure functions The most important functions of thermal management in motor vehicles today are to protect sensitive vehicle components from the effect of heat and to provide optimal thermal comfort for the occupants. Rieter in Sevelen is among Europe’s leading manufacturers of aluminum heatshields. We are able to match the automotive industry’s great diversity of requirements with our own resources in the development and manufacture of heatshields. Increasingly often, we integrate the heatshields that find applications here into multifunctional components according to the ‘Total Vehicle Approach’. Heatshields today are for the most part an integral component of the underbody system, although they often also provide the key to the reduction of high temperatures in the engine compartment. Conversely, we also make it possible for supplementary functions, for example acoustic properties, to be integrated into the heatshields themselves. Rieter is a well-known pioneer in the development of multifunctional components and systems. Our innovative drive, our expertise in acoustics and thermal management as well as our efficient production all play a part in the long-term optimization of thermal management in vehicles. Aluminum heatshields are manufactured in single-sheet or multi-layer construction and protect against very high temperatures. Aluminized steel sheet is used in the hightemperature range. Acoustic heatshields, which are an inhouse development at Sevelen, consist of three layers and combine effective thermal protection with a clear reduction in external noise. Our range is expanding constantly with the development of new and improved heatshields. Our high quality level assures our customers of optimal results. 9 10 Underbody lining production Underbody lining production Underbody solutions Underbody shields and more Today’s underbody architecture is driven by aerodynamics and imposes very high demands on the efficiency of underbody modules. Structural components are also subject to continuously increasing requirements. Our response is innovation. MATERIALS The properties of underbody shields and structural components depend above all on the correct choice of materials. Our production, development and materials know-how is a distinct advantage in all products from this area: As a pioneer in the development of innovative underbody systems, Rieter has the necessary expertise and technologies to optimally integrate multiple functions into underbody solutions and to match these precisely to one another: •Protection of the body from stone impact and dirt •Optimization of aerodynamics •Acoustic sound insulation •Thermal management •Good aesthetics •Carrier function for other components We are also closely involved in the development of structural components, spurred on by the factors of comfort, cost-awareness and competitiveness. •Underbody shields (under-engine shields, diffusers, underbody panels at front and rear, right and left) •Structural components (pedestrian protection, multifunction pans, spare wheel wells, battery trays) Depending on the application and the requirements, we utilize a range of thermoplastics that are combined either with glass fibers or with natural fibers. If necessary, these can be reinforced in particular sections by the inlay of woven glass fiber mats and/or glass fiber profiles. We mainly use the following materials: •GMT Glass mat reinforced thermoplastic •LFT Long fiber reinforced thermoplastic •LWRT Low weight reinforced thermoplastic •Abaca natural fibers We use these materials to produce madeto-measure customer-specific components, which combine functional diversity with maximum efficiency. 11 12 Rieter Automotive Heatshields AG Rieter Automotive Heatshields AG Quality and eco-efficiency Competitive edge for our customers HIGHEST QUALITY LEVEL We devote all our energies to achieving decisive competitive advantages for our customers.
