THURSDAY, MAY 4: MONTSERRAT/BARCELONA After breakfast, we’ll have an early check out of our Burgos hotel, load our luggage and begin our journey across the beautiful countryside of Spain towards Barcelona. We’ll have a stop for lunch en route. Before we get to Barcelona, we’ll drive via Montserrat, a spectacularly beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat about one hour northwest of Barcelona. Not only is Montserrat Monastery of significant religious importance but also the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is simply breathtaking. Afterwards, continue on to Barcelona and check into our hotel. Dinner included at the hotel. SUNDAY, APRIL 30: MADRID/BURGOS Morning arrival into Madrid, Spain. After passport/customs, greet our local tour manager and board our motor coach for a panoramic tour of Madrid, the capital and largest city in Spain. A cosmopolitan city, business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Free time for lunch on your own in Madrid at the famed Plaza Mayor. Afterwards, we travel north to the city of Burgos where we’ll check into our hotel. Welcome dinner included in the hotel. Breakfast at our hotel. Board coach and transfer to Segovia for a city tour. Segovia is Spain and Castile at its best - twisting alleyways, the highest concentration of Romanesque churches in all of Europe, pedestrian streets where no cars are allowed, the aroma of roast suckling pig around every corner - all surrounded by the city's medieval wall which itself is bordered by two rivers and an extensive green-belt park with miles of shaded walks. On the northwest extreme of the wall is the famous Alcázar castle, source of inspiration to Walt Disney, and where Queen Isabel promised Columbus the financial backing he needed to discover America. On the southeast extreme is the world renowned Roman Aqueduct, the largest and best preserved of its kind anywhere, which served as the mintmark on all coins struck in the city from 1455 to 1864. Next we’ll transfer to El Espinar, known as the “Puerta de Castilla y Leon,” where we will perform a concert this evening. Dinner included. SATURDAY, MAY 6: BARCELONA After breakfast at the hotel, and the famed Palau de la Musica, which we will tour. The Palau is an architectural jewel of Catalan Art Nouveau. The building is designed around a central metal structure covered in glass, which exploits natural light to make Domènech i Montaner's masterpiece into a magical music box bringing together all the decorative arts: sculpture, mosaic, stained glass and ironwork. The Concert Auditorium, one of the most distinctive in the world, is for more than a hundred years the setting for the musical life of the city of Barcelona. Dominated by the organ over the stage and a central skylight portraying the sun, the auditorium is filled with natural light. Upon arrival into Lisbon, we will be met by our local guide and coach. Spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo, Lisbon has captivated visitors for centuries. Windswept vistas reveal the city in all its beauty: Roman and Moorish ruins, white-domed cathedrals, grand plazas lined with sun-drenched cafes. Orientation tour of Lisbon on the way to our hotel. Welcome dinner at the hotel tonight. MONDAY, MAY 8: LISBON After breakfast at the hotel, we board our coach for a half-day tour of Lisbon. Lisbon has been occupied by several civilizations along the centuries: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and finally the Portuguese after 1147. You will see St. George Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge), including its surrounding quarter as well as Alfama, Lisbon's oldest quarter. Lisbon is linked to the heroic deeds of Portuguese maritime exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries. This was the age of discoveries and the golden era of Portugal, transforming Lisbon into the opulent center of a vast empire. Lisbon is more than just monuments. You will also visit the traditional commerce and financial areas of the city, with their 18th-century buildings including downtown and the "Chiado," a choice shopping area. This afternoon you will have free time for lunch and more sightseeing and dinner on your own. TUESDAY, MAY 9: Sintra | Cascais | Estoril After breakfast at the hotel, we will embark on our full day tour to enjoy a day away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon on a visit to nearby sites of natural and architectural beauty. Marvel at the views of the surrounding landscape and Atlantic Ocean. Your guide will tell you about the fascinating history associated with this romantic area. Next on the tour is a visit to the historical center of Sintra. Enjoy free time for lunch or visit the National Palace.We will continue on with a drive through the Natural Park, passing the palaces of Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais, and Monserrate with a stop at the end of the world, the great cliffs at Roca Cape, which are the westernmost point of continental Europe. You will also visit the stylish town of Cascais and enjoy the drive along the coast to Lisbon, passing the town of Estoril along the way. This evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner together.
