The infamous Frontman of AVCon.
Whether you love or hate Mitchell,
he’ll surely be the one most seen this
AVCon, most likely pulling his hair out
or rubbing his face off with his palms.
Tom

The secretary disavows all knowledge.
Does he know? Probably not. But at
least with that stylish outfit he could
lure us into a false sense of security
and.. OMFG, Andrew, put a shirt on!

Do a Barron Roll! LoLz!1one. Yeh, it has

to press Z twice to make Barron create

Some

merchandise
The Destroyer of Salads. Keeper of
the BBQ. Gobbo will see to all of your
merchandise needs including food
and beverages. Guess he’s more like a
glorified canteen lady really.
Kelly came to our rescue when the
position suddenly became vacant.
AVCon does not claim responsibility for
any scarring that Kelly has gained this
year. Although it was our fault.
Seems we keep pulling in the rookies
this year. Thankfully they are all
awesome at their jobs. Kendelle is
responsible for all the vendors. Good
Luck. That’ll teach you to volunteer.

Someone just can’t let go of last year’s

even a verb?) around the place making
sure the videogame rooms are all ok.

Mirage
Mirage
Tillian Tribes: Kamikaze Evolution is
side scrolling action adventure set in
a feudal Japanese influenced fantasy
world. It immerses players into the role
of a hero, who must lead his fellow
Tillians into battle on a quest to save
the world that has been taken over by
mysterious demonic forces.
Do you like big guns and pumpkin
headed scarecrows? Is your hatred for
evil crows at an all time high? Then how
about blasting them to smithereens! How
long can you survive in ‘Crows of the
Corn’ before your scarecrow meets its
maker?
Mirage is a third person action RPG that
puts the player into the shoes of two very
different characters on opposing sides of
a violent conflict. Utilising the various
tools in the Source engines software
development kit, Mirage will be a
heavily customised modification of Half
Life 2: Episode 2.

The Cult
Ascendancy: London is a student-created
mod using the Source Engine. It is an
FPS/RPG set in a post-apocalyptic
London. You take the role of Jack Taylor,
once a high-ranking employee of the
Elysium Police Department. Exiled, you
must now survive in a harsh world of
drugs and decadence.
Mentality is a psychological horror set
in the near future that follows a man in a
desperate struggle to survive. The world
is inhabited with beings infected with a
contagious disease that eats away at the
physical and mental state of the carrier.
The twist is you are a carrier…
Hello, our team name is Krisp, and we
have developed a game demo as part of
our course at the TTG Tafe. Come down
and have a play of “The Cult” in the W.P
Rojers Room. Unravel the mysteries
within, and venture into the depths, to
discover an ancient evil!
Video Games

only assume to be this century’s biggest
live event.
Main screen turn on
For those of us suffering from extreme
stage fright there will be a smaller Rock

providing a more chillaxed environment.
Not rhythmically gifted? Just come in,
join the mosh and dance ‘til you pass
out.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for other

Events
AVCons Super Happy Game Show
How are you gentlemen?
Madman presents: AVCon Cosplay
AVCon’s popular Cosplay event is back
again. Cosplay is a big part of any Anime
or Video Game convention. It involves a
combination of costume, role-play and a
good deal of courage. The Cosplay event
is a chance for those who have braved
the wind, the rain and the screaming
fans to get up on stage and show us what
they’ve got with the chance to take home
a prize.
Cosplayers will be required to arrive
at Union Hall 30 minutes prior to the
competition. The categories for this
year are modelled on the most popular
categories from international Cosplay
competitions and are as follows:
- Best Cosplay
(Costume and Performance)
- Best Costume
This year’s event will once again be
held in the union hall and we hope the
stream will work once again. Cosplay
participants have pre-registered this
year, however there may be some space
left for late comers to register for the
Cosplay Parade at the Information Desk.
A copy of the rules will be available to
look over, and by entering the event you
agree to abide by the rules.
- Best Skit/Performance
- Best Group
- Judges Choice
Two teams battle it out in a war of wit,
humour, intelligence and creativity.
Points are awarded to each team, but
be careful because the player who
accumulates the least points may be
eliminated. Watch for “Celebrity” figures
infiltrating the show!! Play for the team,
and play for yourself because there is
only one major prize!
Fruits Fashion Competition
The Fruits Fashion Competition is a
new addition to this year following the
popularity of the fashion parade in 2007.
See examples of Lolita, Fruits, JRock
and other Japanese fashions with prizes
awarded to the best examples by a panel
of judges.
AVMV Competition
Using little more than the average home
PC, fans take video source from their
favourite anime and/or videogame and
with the help of video editing software
packages splice in some of their
favourite music. Driven and limited only
by their own creativity and patience.
The competition offers an outlet to have
these videos screened in front of a large
audience of their fans and peers.
AMV Live
Fan Fiction
Sumo Suits
AMV Live is AVCon’s other AMV
competition with real-time video change;
multiple editors working however
they choose for 2 hours to pull off a
masterpiece, or something like one.
Feeds of the editors videos and progress
will be shown through a projector,
so both the audience and the other
competitors alike will be able to see
what’s happening... as it happens. Last
year’s competitors had a ball and we’re
absolutely certain this year will be no
different. Watch the action and pick up
some tips on creating your own AMV’s
from the hosts.
Situated with the art, the fan fiction
competition has seen steady growth since
it first came to AVCon in 2004. “Fanfics”
are stories written by fans about their
favourite characters from anime or video
games. As with the art competition, the
winner will be judged by a panel, so if
you haven’t already sent in your entry
please see the registration desk to enter
your work.
The Sumo Suits are back by popular
demand! Throw caution, and body
image, to the wind as you step up for a
round of heavily padded sumo wrestling.
This hilarious event is great fun to
watch, but even more fun to do. So don’t
hesitate to take on your friends, or even
a total stranger, in a game of very large
proportions.
Adelaide Comic Centre presents:
The Arts
Art Competition
The art competition features a high
standard of local art across three
categories with the standard rising every
year. Entries cover anime and video
game fan art from a broad range of local
and interstate artists in traditional and
computer generated styles with winners
selected by a panel of judges.
If you wish to enter your artwork in the
competition please ask a staff member
at registration to have it displayed and
registered.
Bento Lunch
New to the art competitions is the chance
to try your hand at this edible art style.
Japanese mothers are famous for the
presentation of their children’s lunches.
Come and see the delicious entries into
this year’s Bento Food Art Competition
or enter your lunch at the registration
desk.
Quiz Night
The quiz night is one of AVCon’s most
popular and enjoyable events. Come and

Code Of Conduct
AVCon 2008 Intent and Polices •
The aim of AVCon (also known herein as the Convention) is to provide a
safe and fun event for people of all ages to enjoy. The Code of Conduct is
here so that injury and other unpleasantness may be avoided, and so that
everyone enjoys themselves during the Convention.
The AVCon 2008 Code of Conduct •
AVCon is organised by Team AVCon Incorporated. All attendees present
at the Convention agree upon entry to comply with this Code of Conduct
for General Public and accept all of its conditions. Please note that failure
to comply with the Code of Conduct may result in ejection from the
convention and associated events, and may result in banning/blacklisting
from future Team AVCon Incorporated events.
Conditions of Entry (General) •
• Entry to the convention and associated events/venues is at an own risk
basis.
• Passes must be worn and visible at all times. One pass per person.
Failure to display a valid pass will result in the attendee either purchasing a
replacement pass, or being ejected from the event.
• Team AVCon Incorporated, its organising committee, staff and volunteers
(including its associates) and the venue/s will not be held liable for any
loss, damage, theft or injury sustained entering or within the premises
during the event.
• No glass, weapons, fireworks, illicit drugs or alcohol will be allowed into
the venue and surrounding area. Team AVCon Incorporated does NOT
tolerate the use or abuse of illegal substances in or around AVCon 2008.
• No smoking is permitted inside public/function areas. It is against
Australian Law covering all States and Territories. Smoking is permitted
in some outside areas at least 10 metres away from buildings, doors,
windows, air intakes etc.
• Animals/pets are not allowed into the venue or the event. The only
exception to this rule exists for people who require a registered Guide Dog
to assist with their mobility.
• Pass holders consent to filming and sound recording as members of the
crowd and/or audience.
• Individual photography/filming may not be undertaken without the
permission of the subject.
• Team AVCon Incorporated reserves the right to refuse entry to and/or
eject from the convention and any associated events any patron acting in a
dangerous manner or in a manner that may cause harm to themselves or
other attendees.
Convention Rating •
The rating of the convention in general is G through to PG-13. Specific
areas and events which may exceed this PG-13 rating will be clearly
marked as such. There are some areas designated as M rated. Due to
differences in international rating structures and systems, some adult
situations may occur in which profanity, nudity or violence may be present.
Where ever possible, we have indicated these events on the programming
schedule to aid in our patrons viewing choices, but parental guidance is
ALWAYS recommended.
Areas or events which are rated over MA15+ will require proof of age to
gain entry. Valid I.D. consists of a valid drivers license, proof of age card,
high school student card or passport. Team AVCon is not liable for any
attendee who uses false identification.
Costumes •
Team AVCon Incorporated reserves the right to deem a costume as
unacceptable and request the wearer to make modifications as necessary.
Public exposure of genitalia, buttocks or (female) breasts are not permitted.
The convention is a family friendly event. Please keep this in mind when
choosing and creating your costumes, and allow your common sense and
good taste to prevail.
Epilepsy Warning •
Some people are susceptible to epileptic seizures or loss of consciousness
when exposed to certain flashing lights or light patterns. Such people may
have a seizure while watching certain monitor images or playing certain
video games. This may happen even if the person has no medical history of
epilepsy or has never had any epileptic seizures. Team AVCon
Incorporated recommends if you or anyone in your family has ever had
symptoms related to epilepsy (seizures or loss of consciousness) when
exposed to flashing lights, consult your doctor prior to participating in
video game events or screening. If you experience any of the following
symptoms: dizziness, blurred vision, eye or muscle twitches, loss of
consciousness, disorientation, any involuntary movement or convulsion,
while playing a video game or watching a screening, IMMEDIATELY
discontinue the activity and consult your doctor.
Filming and Photography •
Photographs and videotape footage by attendees of AVCon 2008 are
generally allowed in all common areas of the convention. Specific rules
and restrictions regarding video, audio, and photography apply to certain
other events within the convention. Pay attention to signs or
announcements regarding restrictions when entering a panel or specific
event/area. When photographing or videotaping individuals or costumes,
use common courtesy and ask before clicking. Respect an attendee’s rights
if they do not wish to be photographed or videotaped.
Photography or videotaping of AVCon 2008 events, staff, or attendees for
the purpose of sale, or publication to the press is expressly forbidden unless
written permission has been obtained from Team AVCon Incorporated. If
images and/or videos are placed onto a personal web page or similar
internet archive, please identify all media from AVCon 2008 events as
being AVCon 2008 events. .
Attendees should also be aware that footage of the convention and
attendees is gathered by staff members, including public areas, events, and
panels, and may be used in a highlights tape, advertising or other use.
Entry into AVCon 2008 constitutes consent to be filmed or photographed
by AVCon 2008 staff or approved industry or media during the convention
without compensation to you. Entry into AVCon 2008 constitutes a grant
of rights to Team AVCon Incorporated to reproduce, display, distribute,
perform, create derivative works from and otherwise use any media
derived at the convention. These rules apply to all convention attendees.

harassment of attendees or a violation of local/state/federal law will result
in ejection from the convention and associated events

Food items including drinks are not allowed inside screening areas or near
electronic equipment such as video game consoles and TVs. Those found
to be consuming food items in such areas will be asked to leave the area
while eating/drinking, but may return once finished.
Liability •
Every due care has been taken to ensure the venue is safe. Team AVCon
Incorporated, its organising committee, staff and volunteers (including its
associates) and the venue/s are not responsible for any loss, damage, theft
or injury that occurs during the event. Attendees are responsible for their
individual actions and any repercussions that may result. Staff are on hand
for assistance in any situation, but any civil or medical emergency is to be
handled directly by the relevant authorities.

Passes must be worn at all times. Failure to display a valid pass will result
in the attendee either purchasing a replacement pass, or being ejected from
the event. Those found entering the event without purchasing a pass will
be escorted to the registration desk to purchase a pass, or will be banned
from the event for its duration.
Press, Special Guest and Vendor passes may be picked up from registration
on the day or prior to the event if previously arranged with Team AVCon
Incorporated. Press passes will only be issued to those able to provide
evidence of employment within the media.
Safety •
Any violation of the Code of Conduct which involve activities prohibited
by law will result in the notification of the proper authorities, eviction from
the event without refund and may result in banning/blacklisting from
future Team AVCon Incorporated events.
Dangerous activities will not be tolerated. This includes aggressive actions
towards other attendees, fighting, offensive behaviour, indecent exposure,
possession of weapons and other obscenities which could result in
substantial risk or harm to persons or property. Attendees participating in
these activities will be evicted from the venue without right to re-entry or
refund. Team AVCon Incorporated accepts no liability for any injuries,
damages or loss caused by these activities.
In the case of an emergency evacuation or situation please follow official
directives.
Security Policy •
Security will be present at AVCon 2008 to ensure the safety of the
attendees, staff, volunteers & venue. Security will patrol the event for
general offences and possible criminal activity. General offences are
handled by Security, who can eject persons from the convention.
• Criminal actions are handled by the Head of Security or the Elect of
Team AVCon Incorporated.
• Certain offences will lead to immediate ejection from the Convention
regardless.
• Removals can be issued for a number of reasons, including but not
limited to:
- Harassment reports.
- Disorderly conduct / disruption of the Convention.
- Violation of any law; be it local, state, national or international.
- Violation of any Convention Policies and other organisations policies
directly relating to AVCon (eg. University of Adelaide, Vorpal Con etc.).
- Avoiding security staff trying to speak with you.
- Flight from security staff after a policy violation has been declared but
before the issue is resolved.
- Violations of ANY of AVCon 2008’s Codes of Conduct, as stated by
Team AVCon Incorporated.
• Criminal actions, if they occur, should be reported to Security who will
follow through with the appropriate course of action deemed necessary.
• Security does not have general responsibility for any aspect of the
Convention, but can choose to respond to any disruptive action occurring
anywhere in the Venue. If Security chooses to remove an individual from
the Convention site, Team AVCon Incorporated or Security will
immediately revoke the attendee’s pass without the right to refund.
Weapons and Props Policy •
Team AVCon defines a weapon as being any item which is large, pointy,
sharp or heavy enough to cause possible harm or any item which could
cause harm to other attendees or property.
• Examples of what is NOT allowed:
- Bladed or edged weapons.
- Live steel, of any kind, such as knives, swords, axes, martial arts
equipment, shuriken, chainsaws etc.
- Firearms (unless the owner is an authorised law enforcement official).
- Most wooden weapons, such as bokken, staffs etc.
- Liquid dispensing weapons.
- Anything that shoots a projectile (this includes realistic and plastic guns).
- Anything that looks like a weapon in the opinion of the security staff.
- Anything Team AVCon Incorporated, security, the venue or law deems
illegal or overly harmful.
• Team AVCon encourages attendees that have weapons as part of their
cosplay costumes to use cardboard/plastic/rubber/styrofoam “fake
weapons” instead of hard, edged, dangerous “real weapons”.
• Anyone caught with a weapon deemed unsafe will be asked to put it in
storage at the event or their own storage (such as inside their car) until
needed for the cosplay competition. If they are found later to not have
stored the weapon they may be escorted by Security to leave the
Convention and have their pass revoked without refund.
• All functioning projectile weapons are NOT allowed at all, this includes
individuals who possess a weapons permit or concealed weapons permit.
Anyone found to possess an illegal or real weapon of any kind will be
reported and handed over to the relevant authorities and their convention
pass will be revoked without refund.
• Upon entry to the Convention you will be asked to “check-in” your
weapons/props whether or not you think they are dangerous. There is a
strict NO WEAPON policy; this means all props must be checked into
storage. You will be able to access your props for photo shoots and the
cosplay competition only.
• Weapons should not at anytime be waved around. It can be considered
“brandishing” to wave a weapon around in a manner that may be construed
as use of the weapon. If your weapon is drawn in a public/function area
your pass will be immediately revoked without refund. Keep in mind
South Australian Police assume all drawn weapons are functional and
Police Officers will act accordingly.
• If you are unsure that your weapon is acceptable in public/ function areas,
please ask the Security Staff or Registration for an inspection of your item.
• Please use good judgment when bringing props/weapons to the
Convention. All weapons need to be checked by Security or Registration
staff.
