My favorite activities were tennis, dodgeball and eating pancakes. My favorite counselor was Bobby. I also enjoyed the stuffed crust pizza and chicken fingers. I really love ca mp. I hope I get to go to camp next year. 1 History SCOPE was the founded in 1991 by camp directors from the American Camp Association’s New York Section (ACA-NY) who were motivated by their belief in the educational and developmental benefits of camp. They recognized the need to provide equivalent camping opportunities to all children – regardless of their socio-economic background – and thus established the SCOPE program in an effort to do so. Over the years, SCOPE has experienced extraordinary growth and positive change. In 2005, the SCOPE Board of Directors, in cooperation with the Board of the ACA-NY, determined that it could achieve even greater potential as its own entity – separate and apart from the ACA-NY. Therefore, the SCOPE program became its own charitable organization, while still maintaining close ties to ACA-NY. In 2007, SCOPE began to expand nationally and partnered with a group of camp directors from the American Camp Association’s Illinois and Wisconsin sections to launch its first affiliate, SCOPE Midwest. Children in the Midwest now derive the many benefits of summer camp through SCOPE. In 1992, SCOPE’s first summer, 26 children received “camperships”. Since that time, the funds raised from SCOPE supporters have provided more than 10,000 underserved children with a summer camp experience. SCOPE has gained regional and national recognition for its work with children and camps and in 2003, was the recipient of the American Camping Foundation’s prestigious Eleanor P. Eels Award for Program Excellence, presented at the American Camp Association’s National Conference in San Francisco, California. For thousands of economically disadvantaged children living every day in parts of our community that few of us dare to walk through, the promise of a summer away at camp provides a measure of hope that maybe, just maybe, tomorrow might be a better day. And, it’s not just the “tomorrow” spent away at camp, that SCOPE brings, but the possibility of many brighter tomorrows one can achieve when they strive for something better. When over 50% of the children served by SCOPE never finish high school, SCOPE was established as the antidote to the despair and cycle of failure now rampant in our underperforming communities. SCOPE rewards children for staying in school with a summer at camp. And, once in camp, they are embraced by the strong supervision of camp professionals working to instill solid values, build their social skills and enhance their self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience – all key building blocks to becoming a success, contributing member of society. The camp community, and those who understand and embrace the values that a camp experience can provide, have through SCOPE, made a commitment to improving our future, one child at a time. Over 1500 children each summer benefit from a camp experience that SCOPE provides. Together, we have created hope for thousands of children over the years and, I trust, for most, a better life reaching for the American dream that we all cherish so much. Jay S. Jacobs SCOPE Founder 3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I n 2008, another banner year for SCOPE, a record 1540 deserving children attended camp as a direct result of our efforts. SCOPE continues to expose more and more children to the wonders of camp, and to strengthen the ACA accredited nonprofit camps that are best positioned to serve these children. Through an expanded partnership model, SCOPE funders have become increasingly engaged and committed to targeting communities and agencies that connect with their missions. With the assistance of our professional staff, foundation supporters have identified groups of children that would benefit directly from a summer camp experience. A by-product of this model is that SCOPE has benefited from increased financial support and long term involvement, as the children are involved in year-round supportive programming, and the same children return to camp year after year. The summer of 2008 was also SCOPE Midwest’s inaugural. Under the leadership of Dayna Hardin, Dana Cohn and Brad Schwartz, and with support from its many volunteers, SCOPE Midwest sent 100 children to ACA accredited camps in the Midwest region. With this model, our board decided to embark on an expansion effort to engage volunteers in other regions across the U.S., and to seed SCOPE affiliates that can help us achieve our goal of providing all children, regardless of their economic status, with access to the benefits of camp. SCOPE’s expansion and growth will continue to be fueled by a tremendous group of volunteers and by our outstanding Board of Directors. The dedication and vision of our professional staff - Executive Director, Michele Friedman and Associate Director, Stephanie Abrams - have enabled us to reach a pivotal point in our growth and evolution. We thank all of our most generous foundation, corporate, camp and individual supporters for their belief in SCOPE’s mission and for their increased commitments over the years. There are many opportunities to help advance our organization. Please contact us if you would like to serve on a committee, if you have any ideas for us, or if you want to support SCOPE. Before closing, I want to acknowledge the current economic difficulties. Recent events have touched nearly everyone, our supporters included. We understand and appreciate the personal and economic challenges that many are facing. We believe SCOPE’s mission to be even more compelling in these challenging times. Thank you for your support! Dan Zenkel Board President 4 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT T he success of SCOPE’s fund-raising during the past year has enabled the organization to become financially secure and to engage many of our major funders to expand and solidify their commitment. The dedication of our individual contributors and corporate and foundation partners is greatly appreciated. I am proud to report some of the major highlights for 2008. The Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz, expanded the Camp Brooklyn funding to provide camperships for 350 Brooklyn children in 2008. The partnership with Camp Brooklyn has grown significantly over the years and continues to be a mainstay of SCOPE’s fund-raising success. The boards of the Heckscher Foundation for Children and the NYMEX Charitable Foundation renewed their support. Their belief in the benefits of summer camp is evident in their unparalleled and long term support. The Turn 2 Foundation funded camperships for 100 children who are enrolled in their after school programs. Many of the campers were returning for a third year through the generosity of the foundation. The feedback from parents and campers was outstanding! The camp experience is part of the continuum of year-round support that is a key element of Turn 2’s mission. The Brooke Jackman Foundation provided funding for 15 children who take part in their literacy programs during the school year to attend camp for 4 weeks this past summer. This partnership has expanded to a long term commitment to the children and to SCOPE. The board leadership of the Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund continued its partnership with the Carver Center in Port Chester, New York, and “Fred’s Kids” returned to camp through SCOPE funding this past summer. The Gabler Fund seeks to make a multi-year commitment to these children, who will be followed up year-round at the Carver Center. Forest City Ratner Companies expanded their partnership to fund 40 children from their community. Again, children enrolled for their second summer, and additional slots were opened through of Forest City’s support. We wish to thank all of our foundation and corporate partners for their generous and continued support and for their belief in SCOPE’s mission. And, to all those who supported SCOPE this past year, your generosity is greatly appreciated by all of the children whose lives you have changed forever! Michele Friedman Executive Director 5 SCOPE’s Impact E ducators in the camp industry understand that summer camp has a unique role to play in our overall system of child development. An important adjunct to school, camp helps children develop self-esteem and social skills, promotes intellectual growth in a non-academic setting, and provides children with a safe, structured environment in which to mature. Too few inner-city children benefit from the camp experience. Although scores of not-for-profit camps in the region seek to serve these children, declining funding and increasing expenses have led to empty beds, numerous camp closings, and too many idle children roaming the city streets. Only by harnessing new resources will we be able to offer children in need the same educational opportunities that are routinely available to their more affluent counterparts. Unfortunately, low-income, inner-city children who would most benefit from a summer camp experience are too often unable to attend. SCOPE seeks to provide these children with a summer camp opportunity that can be transforming. “Each year I learn something new. I grow as a person and learn more about myself and about others.” “…I have waited for summer to come just so I could go back to camp. I think about camp almost every day. Camp helps kids more than we realize…” 6 SCOPE CAMPERS T he children served by SCOPE are economically disadvantaged youth whose families cannot afford to provide them with a summer camp experience. Through SCOPE, children escape from the urban setting to secure environments which foster positive self-esteem, strong self-confidence, and appropriate social skills. SCOPE affords these children the opportunity to leave the boredom, pollution, and potential dangers of a city summer and instead experience a supervised, caring community surrounded by positive adult role models. SCOPE gives inner-city children the opportunity to have a challenging and constructive In order to participate in SCOPE, campers must: Be 7-16 years old Meet family income eligibility requirements established by the United States Department of Agriculture for free or reduced-price school lunch omplete an application essay expressing their desire and motivation to go to C resident camp Be enrolled in a public school Agree to comply with the registration procedures and rules and regulations of the chosen camp 7 SCOPE CAMPS S COPE was developed not only to help children, but also as a response to the increased need for funding and support for camps in the not-for-profit sector. In an effort to provide a valuable experience for economically disadvantaged children, through the provision of camperships, SCOPE continues its dedication to fund-raising and program designs which promote camp as a complementary adjunct to formal education. Camps are chosen based on their adherence to these ideals, as demonstrated in their written materials, organizational goals or mission statements, and their expressed commitment to providing quality summer camp experiences. Camps must demonstrate that they provide safe opportunities for their campers to benefit from an enriching, character-building and educational experience. Only not-for-profit camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) may participate in the program. Camps that are accredited must meet national standards in camp operation, quality of program and facilities, staff qualifications, and health and safety. Participating camps must verify that they: Have current 501c3 status as issued by the Internal Revenue Service, and Had a valid Operating Permit for the previous summer as issued by the state Department of Health. By providing camperships for eligible campers, SCOPE is supporting the participating not-for-profit camps that are facing funding challenges. Despite SCOPE’s success, most not-for-profit camps continue to operate well below capacity. Our goal for the future is to place a child in need in every empty bunk. 8 Participating Camps Appel Farm Arts and Music Center Elmer, NJ Johnsonburg Presbyterian Center Johnsonburg, NJ Berkshire Hills-Emanuel Camps, Copake, NY Kiddie Keep Well Camp Edison, NJ The College Settlement of Philadelphia Horsham, PA Lebanon Baptist Camp and Conference Center Lebanon, NJ Fiver Earlville, NY* Camp Ma-He-Tu Bear Mountain, NY Camp Sandy Cove High View, WV The Fresh Air Fund Fishkill, NY* Camp Nejeda Stillwater, NJ Surprise Lake Camp Cold Spring, NY Girls Quest E. SCOPE – Midwest I n February 2008, a group of camp directors in the Chicago area formed a committee to launch SCOPE-Midwest. This is SCOPE’s first affiliate, as we begin to expand nationally. The SCOPE-Midwest Board includes Dayna Hardin (Lake of the Woods and Greenwoods Camps), Brad Schwartz (Banner Day Camp), Dana Cohn (Lake of the Woods and Greenwoods Camps), Sandy Cohen (Marimeta Camp), Gabe Chernov (Birch Trail Camp), Gordie Kaplan (ACA IL Section Executive), Michael Hoffenberg (ACA-IL Section), Michael Cohen (CLOZ Company) and Lucia Thoensen (Tamarak Day Camp). Their first event took place in April when over 200 people came together to learn more about SCOPE’s mission and to help raise money to send children to camp. The Kickoff Event committee was chaired by Emily Ferdman from Lake of the Woods Camp along with a lot of help from a fabulous committee comprised of camp professionals and camp alumni. The party took place at Jake Melnick’s Restaurant in Chicago where attendees enjoyed cocktails, food, a silent auction and SCOPE’s traditional Sponsor-a-Child. This first event raised over $18,000. Together with local fund-raising and the generosity of an anonymous funder, SCOPE Midwest provided camperships for 100 children to attend 4 camps in their region in 2008. 10 LISA LOEB ESTABLISHES CAMP LISA FOUNDATION I n 2008, the new CD of camp songs, “Camp Lisa” was released to celebrate the summer camp experience for children. In conjunction with the release of her new album, Lisa Loeb launched the Camp Lisa Foundation, which raises money to provide summer camp opportunities through a partnership with SCOPE! Lisa’s dedication to providing camp experiences to children less fortunate was reinforced by her visits to SCOPE camps. Lisa was warmly greeted by children and staff, and she saw first hand the impact that her funding is making in the lives of children. The camp tour enabled Lisa to get back to camp, a place that she knows enhanced her own life! 11 Events EVENTS HELP US RAISE FUNDS AND KEEP THE CONNECTION GOING! Dear SCOPE, I want to say “thank you” to you for helping me go to camp last summer. I have been going for many years, and I have lots of friends at camp. I know that I would not have gone to camp and learned so much about myself if you did not help kids like me. I think you are a very generous person who thinks about others and helps them. I will remember you when I am old enough to help others with camp scholarship money. Thank you very much, 12 Carli-Ann Winter Event for Young Professionals What else can warm you better on a cold winter night then a gathering with camp friends! On January 31st, over 300 young professionals turned out at Branch, in New York City, to support SCOPE. Justin Mayer and Jessica Jacobs, event co-chairs, and their hard working committee raised over $30,000 through event donations, Sponsor-a-Child pledges and the ultimate silent auction! The Winter Event brings together young professionals who believe in the benefits of camp. 13 ANNUAL BENEFIT DINNER The 2008 SCOPE Benefit Dinner was a record-breaking success and raised $320,000 to provide children in need with an opportunity to attend camp. The evening would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the dinner committee, as well as the leadership of Michele Friedman, Stephanie Abrams, and the SCOPE Board of Directors. We were pleased to honor the 2008 Ben Appelbaum Advocate for Youth Award recipient, Philip Lilienthal, Founder and CEO, Global Camps Africa. The longtime owner of Camp Winnebago, Phil went on to establish Global Camps Africa to impact the lives of children and youth by using the methodology of residential camp as a vehicle to make them aware of HIV/AIDS and to effect a change in behavior and attitude among the youth. Phil is a visionary and dedicated advocate for youth and most worthy of this honor. We also recognized the inductees to The Legends of Camping: Buddy Pierce, Reverend Donald A. Hostetter, and Barry Royce. Each of these camp icons has enhanced the camp profession by their example, while impacting countless children’s lives. Our featured performer, Lisa Loeb, rocked the house with her spirited songs and support of SCOPE. A hearty thank you to event sponsors Camp America, CCUSA, The Dime Bank, LICAPS, and Pierce Camps. The Sponsor-A-Child drive broke all records: Camp America through AIFS Foundation pledged the first 35 camperships to get the ball rolling. CCUSA once again pledged to match up to 100, and stepped up to match a full 200 camperships. With the wonderful support of the record-breaking crowd and corporate partners who believe so deeply in our mission, over 1500 children in need attended camp in 2008! 14 SCOPE GOLF OUTING On September 22nd, 120 camp directors, camp staff, friends, relatives and corporate sponsors enjoyed a great day on the links in support of the 11th Annual SCOPE Golf Invitational at the Glen Head Country Club on Long Island. The event was sold out, and featured an impressive brunch, cocktail party and dinner; over 60 raffle and tournament prizes; opportunities for golfers at all ability levels; and most important.... event proceeds that broke the 10 year record to support SCOPE’s goal of providing camp experiences for children in need. Kudos to Michael Corpuel and the golf committee for an outstanding job, and many thanks to our Event Sponsors, CampGroup, Super Enterprises, Jay and Neil Canell, and Sobel Affiliates, for their unparalleled support. The generosity of all who attended was over the top in their response to our Sponsor a Child drive hosted by Doug Pierce. And, raffle tickets were sold out!!! The word is out… this is the golf outing not to be missed! 15 SUMMER CAMP OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDE AN EDGE, INC.
