Friends and family of Bothell UMC,
So many wonderful things have happened in this past year. Many hands,
hearts and voices have created space for God to do amazing things. I’m
thankful for our paid and unpaid servants who share their gifts and graces.
I’m grateful that ours is a church family that completely embraces new ways
of doing things. Case in point is this Advent season. We have trees up in the
narthex and sanctuary, but no lights are on and no ornaments are up. There
are no garlands on the walls, no ribbons or tinsel. Instead, we’re embracing
the mystery, the waiting, the redemption and incarnation in a powerful way
this year as together we explore the emotional landscape that is Advent.
My prayer for the coming year is that we focus on fulfilling our mission as
a United Methodist Church, “To make disciples of Jesus Christ, for the transformation of the world.” Let’s continue to create spaces and opportunities
for the activity of the Holy Spirit. I am so excited to join each of you as we
deepen our discipleship together.
There is so much potential in our future together. Thank you so much for
allowing me to serve in this way.
Blessings,

2016 Flower Chart
The Longest Night
Tuesday, December 22, 7 pm
Placing flowers on the
communion table is a
nice way to remember
someone or to honor them. The 2016
flower chart is in the narthex on the wall
by the information booth. There is a
small card to fill out on the chart.
Leave the card on Barb's desk. Have
the flowers at church by noon on Friday
or before the 8 am service on Sunday
as the flowers are now used at all
services. If you prefer, write a check
for $40 and the flowers will be bought
for you.
The Longest Night Worship Service invites
us to acknowledge that much is not well
with our world, and to offer our sadness,
grief and struggles to the coming king.
On the night of the longest night of the
year, worship anoints us, comforts us and
reminds us that God walks through the
darkness with us. Come sing, light
candles, embrace silence, and listen for
Spirit. From our deepest darkness, Light
dawns!
Floating Diners Sign-up
It’s time to reform groups for floating
diners. Floating Diners’ purpose is to get
to know fellow members of our church
by meeting once at each member’s
house for a potluck dinner. The host
provides the main dish and the others
take turns providing appetizers, salads,
desserts, etc. Floating Diners is an adult
group of couples or singles in groups of
approximately 8 that enjoy getting to
know one another better and to make
new acquaintances. Groups stay
together for approximately one year
and then reform.
Cookie Walk Thank You
Dear Church Family,
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone who supported this
year's Bothell UMW's Cookie Walk. From
bakers, buyers and helpers; you all
helped make this fund raiser a yummy
success! Your support of the Cookie
Walk is so important to the mission work
that is funded by Bothell UMW both
locally and around the world. Special
thanks goes to the Senegal Sisters,
Kelcy K. and Dawn K. I couldn't have
done it without all of you.
Please sign-up on the Sunday bulletin,
contact the church office or contact
Nancy Field, at (425) 481-8450 or
nancyfield@outlook.com. Sign-up even
if you have participated before.
Blessings,
Ann Cargill

Saying “Hello” (or answering the question Jeremy asks at
the end of the Roots or Wings services) is the easiest way
to show visitors to the church that Bothell UMC truly
welcomes everyone. Please remember that we’ll have
new people visiting at every service and especially on
Christmas Eve. Let’s make sure everyone is greeted and
feels welcome.
We now have large-print Bibles and magnifying glasses
for those who have difficulty reading from a pew Bible.
Please ask your usher if you would like to use either a LP Bible or a magnifying
glass.
If you’re looking for a way to exercise your creative muscles and be of service,
why not create and decorate the front entry bulletin board(s) in the narthex. The
main topics are the upcoming sermons and month’s activities, both of which are
produced by church staff. Your job – if you choose to accept it – is to enlarge the
documents, make the month title and put up decorations around the board.
Seasonal themes work well. Generous assistance is offered to help you get
started. Contact Barb in the office if you are interested.
Bothell Movie Madness is a great “family date night.” This month it’ll be on Friday,
December 18. If you have never tried it before, bring your family, friends and
neighbors and pack up some kind of salad, veggie or dessert for the potluck.
(We’re Methodists, there has to be a potluck involved!) We’ll provide the entrée,
this month it’ll be baked ham. YUM. Lawn chairs to view the movie in comfort are
encouraged. Potluck starts at 6 pm followed by the movie 101 Dalmatians around
7 pm. There’s a separate movie (Elf) for youth in the youth room. We even provide
the popcorn!
We always serve cookies and hot cider to guests on Christmas Eve. If you can
contribute some home-baked cookies on Christmas Eve, please sign up on the
bulletin tear-away or call the church office.

Library News
Faith & Fiction
During the month of December the
library puts out old and new stories
that relate to the Christmas season.
We also add Christmas DVD's and
CD's for your enjoyment.
Everyone is invited to join us for our
monthly book discussion. We meet at
the Greens' home, only a few short
blocks from the church, usually on the
third Wednesday of the month, at 7pm.
We are adding the following new
books:
December 16, 6 pm — House Made
of Dawn, by N. Scott Momaday
(Starting an hour earlier as it’s our
Christmas gathering, an appetizer
potluck!)
The Christ of Christmas
by James Montgomery
Boice
January 20, 7 pm — Claire of the Sea
Light, by Edwidge Danticat
This book contains a
collection of Christmas
insights.
UMW Shelves
Dr Boice has written an
excellent guide to celebrate the birth
of Christ in a thoughtful and festive
way.
The United Methodist Women have
dozens of books from the UMW Reading
List on the shelves in the back of the
Library. These books are available to
everyone, not just United Methodist
Women. So the next time you’re in the
library, check out the UMW shelves.
The Christmas Shoppe
by Melody Carlson
(Guideposts Selection)
The story is about a
small town, an
eccentric woman and
an unusual store. This is
a delightful book that leaves you
smiling.
You’ll be glad you did!
May you enjoy the richness of simple
living and the boundless joy of the
holiday season.

Flooding, tornadoes, and more flooding have caused extensive damage in central Texas.
Photo: Jocelyn Augustino/FEMA
By Susan Kim
December 8, 2015—In Navarro County, Texas, where there was little history of
disaster, residents have just experienced their third round of storms and flooding
this year. In May, October, and November, central Texas bore the brunt of bad
weather that has left not only physical damage but frustration among residents
who are wondering when the rain will stop.
Trained Early Response Teams were an important part of response, completing
muck-outs and tarping roofs,” said Laraine Waughtal, disaster response
coordinator for the Central Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church.
Repeat disasters are difficult both in terms of physical damage and psychological
toll, said Greg Forrester, UMCOR executive in charge of U.S. Disaster Response.
“Three disasters in five months — flooding, tornadoes, flooding once again. It’s not
only one community — it’s multiple communities in that region, and we’re finding
that many residents were severely under-insured or had no flood insurance.”
Forrester is already envisioning how UMCOR will support disaster risk reduction
efforts to help protect these communities from further damage. “There is no reason
these homes have to flood again and again,” he said.

Upcoming Sermons
Advent is a time of preparation that
believers use to deepen their faith as
they wrestle with the unexpected
miracle of the birth of Jesus. The Advent
sermon series – Are you there God? – is
part of this preparation. The themes of Waiting, Mystery, Redemption and
Incarnation are intended to help us all dive deep into scripture and open our
hearts to the prompting of God’s Spirit. On Christmas Eve we’ll begin a new
sermon series looking at the theology alluded to in the Star Wars saga.
