President’s Message - September, 2015 As summer comes to a close most of us start thinking about skiing in the high Rockies. Skiing also has us thinking about FSC and its ski outings. You may have heard a few words in advance about our outings if you came to our Annual Membership Picnic, August 29. If not, say hello to another FSCer to find out about these and other outings. And, be sure to come to our first evening club meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8th. See you there, Pres. Herm New ski-trip to Park City/Canyons in Jan, 2016? At the instigation of some FSC members, Joe Golden is soliciting expressions of interest from FSC members who might be interested in a new 3-4 night trip to Park City/Canyons UT(soon to be the largest ski-area in U.S., surpassing Vail) in late Jan. 2016. Those of us who have any of the Vail Epic passes can ski free there, and others can get discounts. We would carpool/drive and rent a large house nearby with full kitchen for group meals, and costs would kept low. Please contact Joe if you are interested, we need a min of 15-25 for the trip to happen. FSC Book Club - New Members Welcome Monday, September 14, at 7 pm - Pat Irwin will lead the discussion of "The Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline. The meeting will be at her home. Meet at Rest Area on top of Vail Pass at 10:30AM. Drivers take cars down to Frisco Exit parking lot One car?? transports drivers back to the top of Vail Pass. All bikes coast down paved bike path to Frisco. Find someplace to have a late lunch in Frisco. Carpool back to Boulder during afternoon. (Will be canceled if weather is bad. If you want to bike up Vail Pass meet the rest of the group on top at 11:00AM). Sign up is required. Stewart Woodward Summer 2015 Wildflower Rambles Friday, September 25 White Rocks 2:00 – 5:00 PM Leader: Linda Paris OSMP’s Dave Sutherland will present a program for FSC at the recently acquired White Rocks Preserve on 75th St. near Boulder Creek, including the unique biological and geological features of this site, its preservation history, and the impacts from the 2013 flood. Participation is strictly limited to 15 people and advance registration with Linda Paris is required to participate. E-mail Linda with your request. A waiting list beyond the 15-person limit will be taken. FALL ELK BUGLING Join us for our annual elk bugling trip to Rocky Mountain National Park on Wednesday, September 23 with leaders Chris and Linda Paris. We are planning to view elk and hike on the Cub Lake and Fern Lake Trails making a loop with a hiking distance of approximately 6 miles. There is no limit on participation numbers. A 4 PM post-watch dinner is available for those who wish to participate at Mama Rosa’s in Estes Park. You can view a menu for Mama Rosa’s at http://mamarosesrestaurant.com/. Please contact Linda and Chris by Saturday, September 19 (e-mail or phone preferable) if you are coming and to let us know if you staying for dinner, so we can make reservations. Bring lunch/snack for midday and money to cover the cost of dinner and carpool. Binoculars are helpful for elk watching. If you have a park pass, please bring it along for the RMNP entrance. FSC Friday Afternoon Club (FAC) New Participants Welcome FSC Friday FAC meets from 4 pm until 5:30 at Rincon del Sol, 2350 Arapahoe. It is on the South Side of Arapahoe, just west of gas station at SW corner Folsom & Arapahoe, and good parking is on the West side. Has good Happy Hour prices and food. FSC meets in the large west-side room. Flatirons Ski Club Hut Trips Flatirons members enjoyed two 10th Mountain Division FowlerHilliard Hut Trips in August. The weather was great although a little smoke haze on both trips. There were hikes to circle Resolution Mountain and climb Ptarmigan Mountain. The first group got to see a meteor shower and the second group saw the International Space Station travel across the sky. Several members on both trips went wild collecting mushrooms.
