Jūrmala – on the wave of health!
At the end of 18th century at Kaugurciems arrived first
visitors – Kurzeme region’s landlords.
Jurmala is the biggest seaside resort in the Baltic States, located just 25 km away
from the capital city Riga. Jurmala is a member of European Spas Association and it has
a status of “Healthy City”, granted by World Health Organization.
The beginning of 19th century is the dawn of Jūrmala
resort history. After the war between Russia and France in 1812,
the wounded Russian army officers came to take a rest at local
fishermen houses.
Jurmala health resort invites to relax at fresh and healthy maritime air, enriched by
centenary pines scent, to walk along the beach enclosed by the pines, the white sand
beach, adjacent to the dune and stretching for 33 km along the gulf of the Baltic Sea.
The beach is especially suitable for children. It is formed by fine white quartz sand,
which has been brought here by the seashore stream for thousands of years. Jurmala is
washed by the sea waves from the one side, and is embraced by the river Lielupe from
the other side, which offers you opportunity of going to river ship trips. Every year the
seashore of Jurmala is granted the Blue Flag, which is the testimony of quality, safety,
presence of different beach equipment and shows that beach is suitable for people
with special needs. Fresh maritime air and sough calm and allow forgetting oneself
the everyday life. While relaxing in one of the resort hotels it is possible to visit SPA
procedures, which will be worked out by certified specialists. Jurmala is the city that
takes care of your comfort and health!
The end of 19th century resort flourished, were built
most of the fishermen’s houses, summer cottages, medical
establishments and resort infrastucture. For purpose of
relaxation and health treatment that time were built bathing
houses with warm sea water baths.
In 1870 Dr. Johann Christian Nordstrem opened sanatorium “Marienbad” where he applied climate-therapy methods by making his patients run on the beach, swim and be
active at the fresh air.
Ķemeri (Bad Kemmern) with its curative qualities of sulphur
springs is well known since 18th century. First mineral water
analysis was made in 1801, but in 1838 – first mud analysis by
profesor G. Thomas. 1838 is the official year of Kemeri resort
foundation when Csar Nikolaj I allocated there territory for
building resort. Ķemeri gained city rights in 1928.
In the beginning of the 19th century when no bathing suits
were known, were established separate swimming hours for
men and women. Since 1897 were introduced special hours for
swimming in bathing suits. Bathing suit consisted of trousers
up to knee, and a sleeveless shirt with a belt. In 1914 swimming
without bathing suits was prohibited.
In 1920 city rights with the name Rīgas Jūrmala were
granted to the current territory of Jūrmala from Priedaine
to Kauguri. The united Jūrmala city was established on the
November 11, 1959 merging 3 territories – Rīgas Jūrmala,
Sloka and Ķemeri.
Jurmala – the best choice for children’s
health and relaxation!
The Jurmala city is friendly to infants in every season. Evenly changeable weather, the air contains much ozone and
mineral substances – salt, bromine and iodine. The pure maritime air has favorable influence on the child’s organism,
lungs and skin, because the maritime air does not contain dust and harmful microorganisms. The water at the seashore
is shallow, that is why it is safe to relax here with children. The beach is well-equipped with different pleasure- and
playgrounds for children, changing cabins, football and volleyball fields, descents for prams and wheelchairs. A great
opportunity for families to spend vacation together by going on bike rides on specially arranged bikeways or riding
along the beach.
Jurmala atmosphere and climate strengthens children’s health, improves metabolism and blood composition,
improves appetite and sleep, facilitates strength after the tiredness at school, as well as strengthens body protection

Recreative and healing factors
Climate
Jurmala is located in the very south of Riga Bay, but the high coastal dunes
protect resort from strong sea winds. Winters are mild here, air temperature
around –1,3°С. Summers are temperate, warm, but not very hot, average air
temperature is +19°С. 50% of the town is covered with pine trees that clear out
the air and improve its healing quality. Climate in Jurmala is temperate and
soft, that’s why even in hot days swimming and sunbathing in Jurmala is not
exhaustive.
There are several kinds of climate therapies in Jurmala: sunbathing, swimming in the sea, sand bathing (psammotherapy), and air therapy.
Sand bathes (psammotherapy)
Psammotherapy – treatment with hot (40–46°С) sand that can be used during the hot summer days. The body should be
covered with sand in a layer of 15 cm, remaining uncovered the area where heart is located. The head must be in shade. The
duration of sand bath must be 20 to 30 minutes. The treatment increases metabolism, and has resolving and pain relieving
qualities.
Air therapy
The air is used as a healing factor – air bathes, walks in open air, as well as sleep by the open window can be used. These
treatments improve functions of heart, blood composition, strengthens nervous system, trains system of thermo regulation, as
well as strengthens body in general. Air bathes can be taken no faster than one hour after a meal, also taking into account the
weather conditions, air temperature, strength of wind as well as average humidity.
Mineral waters
Climate therapy
Climate therapy has been long ago known as an effective mean in cases
of treatment of respiratory tracts and skin diseases. Climate therapy helps
in allergy treatment, which is widely spread disease nowadays. Due to this
reason Jurmala is an ideal place for healthy relaxation and opportunity of
spending spare time in the healthy climate area.
Maritime air affects patient in a positive way because it is enriched with sodium
chloride, which affects the mucous membrane as sedative and while irritating the skin
it improves the blood circulation and metabolism. The air containing the sea salt and iodine affects the organism disinfectant; it
does not bring the pollen and other substances causing the allergy. The ultraviolet rays ensure the origination of D vitamin in the
organism and strengthen the immune system.
Sunbathing (natural light therapy)
Sunbathing has a positive influence on human organism if it is done correctly according to medical reccomendations:
• To cover the head from sun rays with a sun umbrella or a cap;
• The best time for sunbathing is from 9 till 12 in the morning;
• Not to sunbathe with an empty stomach; better 30–40 minutes after breakfast
• To doze sunbathing, gradually letting the organism get use to the sun;
• To relax in the shadow for 10–20 minutes after sunbathing;
• To take a shower or to swim after sunbathing.
• Correctly taking sun baths, they raise the tonus, immunity, encourage the healing of wounds.
Swimming in the sea (talassotherapy)
However usually people swim during the summer, walking along the beach and sea view have a positive affect not only on
human organism but also on emotional condition in any time of the year. Swimming in the sea encourages heart and blood
system, metabolism, decreases wieght. The influence of swimming depends on water temperature, salt content and wave
strenghth. Also there are some reccomendations for swimming:
• To swim at noon when the water and air are warm enough, as well as
1–2 hours after eating, especially for people with health troubles;
• Healthy people can swim also in the morning before breakfast;
• Not to swim in case of strong waves
• To dry the body with a towel after swimming
even in hot days.
Sea resort Jurmala is famous for its sulphur, brome and natrium chloride mineral waters that are used not only for drinking
but also for baths, showers and pools. Mineral water gives a restorative effect on the organism, prevents arthritis,
allergies, inflammation of nerves and muscles, improves blood circulation and
treats the nerve system.
Balneological treatment
Mineral baths and showers Basic ingredient of sulphide bath is
middle-sulphide water with the hydrogen sulphide concentration
of 60 mg/l. It affects metabolism and deacrease inflammation in
problem zones. Brome baths are active balneological treatments,
which are used in treatment of nerve, heart, support and motion,
digestive systems, as well as gynaecological problems.
Drinking mineral water Drinking chloride-natrium water (mineralisation 5–10 g/l) improves the functions of digestive system, improves the good-looks, as well as overall well-being. It is
reccomended to wash hands and face in the sulphur spring “Lizard”
in Kemeri.
Healing muds
There are 2 types of mud in Jurmala – peat and sapropel mud, which contains a lot of mineral substances, organic acids,
microelements. Mud applications are used for treatment and prophylaxis of different deseases. Mud also positively effect human
wellbeing, decreases the emotional stress.

Medical exercises
– the complex of exercises for certain disorders treatment and prophylaxis. Depending on the trouble, a hygienic, medical
exercises, sport games, joggind and walking are reccomended. Exercises stimulate activity of heart and lungs, decrease

Paraffin applications

Reittherapy (Horse riding therapy)

Salt room

Entrance tax for Jūrmala
Tax for private transport entering Jūrmala’s resort area is 1 LVL
per 24 hours. No tax must be paid by motorcyclists, tourist buses
(if the head of the group is able to present a route plan where
Jūrmala is indicated as a place of tourism visit), as well as tourists
that have a pass issued by Jūrmala’s places of accommodation.
