Choose from over 55 clinically relevant talks, including these innovative lectures. Thursday, April 12 | 9:15 am Micro-albuminuria: The Hidden Vascular Risk Factor This talk will describe the normal ranges for microalbumin, how false positives can be attained, the various stages of micro-albuminuria, and the relationship of micro-albuminuria to vascular risk. Evidence-based treatments for reduction of microalbuminuria and their relationship to reducing vascular risk will also be explored. Friday, April 13 | 9:30 The effective control of hypertension in the American population will substantially improve the long-term health of the population. This presentation will review the current guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and consider the most recent contributions from the literature. Friday, April 13 | 10:15 am Preoperative Risk Evaluation in the Older Patient Highlighted Lectures am What’s Hot in Febrile Seizures This talk will review the risk factors, proper assessment, management, and prognosis of febrile seizures in children. Recognition of the clinical signs for simple and complex febrile seizures will be reviewed, as will the differential diagnosis for seizures occurring in the setting of fever. Evidence-based recommendations for the evaluation and work-up of febrile seizures will be presented. Recent evidence related to underlying pathophysiology and genetics of febrile seizures will also be discussed. am Physician and Patient Decisions in Treating Hypertension 4 Friday, April 13 | 11:00 Postoperative cardiac complications are one of the most important sources of morbidity and mortality after major surgery in the elderly. This lecture will present a practical approach to patient selection, risk stratification, and interventions to reduce this risk. Participants will learn the revised cardiac risk index and the proper use of beta-blockers and other medications to reduce cardiovascular risk after surgery. Friday, April 13 | 5:00 pm Addiction Medications: What to Know This lecture will update the clinician on drugs that can help in the treatment of alcohol dependence and opioid dependence. Saturday, April 14 | 3:00 pm To Screen or Not to Screen: Whom, When, and How Should We Screen for Cancer? In 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued new recommendations regarding screening for breast cancer, the most common cause of cancer in women (230,000 cases/year) in the U.S.; in 2010, the American Cancer Society issued new recommendations concerning screening for prostate cancer, the most common cause of cancer in males (240,000/yr) in the U.S. Both recommendations challenged long-standing beliefs and practices regarding use and frequency of basic screening tests—mammograms and the PSA test, as well as the value of the breast self-exam and the digital rectal exam of the prostate. In this presentation, evidence for the new recommendations will be reviewed and suggestions will be offered on how these recommendations should be explained to your patients and whether they should be implemented.
