Dear Westover Family,
I would like for you to circle the date of OCTOBER 20. It’s a
Sunday, and we are planning to do something very special
at Westover—something we don’t do all that often.
During our morning services, we will be showing an
incredible DVD, entitled Defining Moments. It is a
powerful 28-minute video produced by the Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association. Our staff, elders, and deacons
have all seen it. I have watched it 10 times. We all
agree...this is a powerful tool for churches, groups, and
individuals in sharing the gospel. It has been produced
with excellence.
Westover family—there are THREE THINGS I ask
you to do:
1 Watch the DVD
We would love for YOU to see it...in advance of
October 20.
I am convinced once you view it...you will understand
what a great tool this DVD is and be far more inclined
to invite guests to Westover on October 20.
The easiest way to do so is to watch it online at:
http://myhopewithbillygraham.org/definingmoments/
2 Pray…
on Sunday, October 20.
Pray that many will come to Christ for salvation.
3 C onsider…who
you might invite as your guest on October 20.
If you can’t tell, I am very excited about this!
Still praying for God’s favor,
Each family needs only one login.

The Getting Ready campaign was introduced to
the church this past May. Here is an update of
what has taken place since May and what
you can expect as the Getting Ready
campaign begins this month.
• The mortgage was refinanced, shortening
the term of the mortgage by 5½ years and
reducing the total amount of interest payments by
$11 million. All of those savings were accomplished while
keeping the monthly mortgage payment the same.
• The Getting Ready team has been giving presentations to
LifeCommunities, answering their questions and getting feedback on
the campaign.
• The Getting Ready prayer team has been meeting to pray for Westover
and this campaign on a monthly basis.
One of the lessons learned during the LifeCommunity presentations
was that the ultimate goal of the Getting Ready campaign was not
clear to everyone. There has been so much focus on the mortgage and
refinancing that many people believed the primary purpose of the
Getting Ready campaign was to pay off the mortgage.
While that is a logical conclusion, it isn’t correct. You may recall one
of the phrases used during the May presentation was “moving money
from the mortgage into ministry”. That is a much more accurate view
of the goal for the Getting Ready campaign. The goal is more ministrymoving money from the mortgage into ministry is simply the mechanism
to accomplish that goal. From now until the end of Getting Ready
(December 2014) you’ll see an emphasis on the ministries that will be
impacted through this campaign.
Here is an example of how giving to the Getting Ready campaign
will help provide money for ministry—if we raise $5 million during the
campaign, our mortgage payment would be reduced by about $38,000
per month. That would free up more than $460,000 every year to be
used for ministries at Westover. That amount of money can have a big
impact on ministry.
Many people have asked if there is a financial goal for the
Getting Ready campaign. There has not been a specific dollar amount
established. The leaders involved with the Getting Ready campaign
believe that God will determine the final outcome and have left the
number up to Him.
During the month of September, the people of Westover will have
the opportunity to pledge an amount to give as part of the Getting Ready
campaign. Please pray about how God would have you participate, not
only financially, but perhaps by also volunteering to serve in a ministry at
Westover.
You will receive a lot of information about the Getting Ready
campaign over the months of the campaign. However, no amount of
communication can answer every question. If there is a question you
want to ask, please e-mail it to gettingready@westoverchurch.com.
Pray that hundreds of our people would bring guests

Our membership class is titled THE JOURNEY, and focuses on
six major components:
• Together on the Journey – the priority of the local church.
• The Beginning of the Journey – priority of the Gospel and
what that means for the church.
• Truth for the Journey – a focus on the scriptures and the
“who, what, where, how, and so what?” of the Bible.
• Strength for the Journey – what is the role of the Holy
Spirit?
• Care Along the Journey – the importance of communal
living and leadership.
• Participating in the Journey – where serving, missional
living, and you intersect.

CALLING ALL NEWCOMERS
Welcome! We’re glad you’re here. This monthly
newsletter and our website westoverchurch.com
are two of the best ways to know what’s going on
at Westover. If you are ready to take your first steps
here, we suggest the following...
Have you started attending Westover recently and wonder

class that gives you an opportunity to meet many of the pastors while
learning about Westover’s history, purpose/priorities, ministries,
and ways to connect. Plus, it’s a great first step toward connecting at
Westover. We look forward to meeting you!

Internationally recognized Christian Ballet Company, Ballet Magnificat! Omega presents Hiding Place
- an original production based on the best-selling 1971 book on the life of Corrie ten Boom. In 1940,
the Nazis invaded Holland in World War II. The ten Boom family saved many Jewish families from
the Nazi Holocaust by hiding Jews in a secret room in their home. Hiding Place is a powerful and
dramatic presentation with a message of hope in dire circumstance and forgiveness in Jesus Christ.

Last Spring, a representative team of parents, volunteers, and staff from all ages and grade spans was
formed to dream and cast a vision for the future of our

plans were drafted improving our ministry for children, parents and volunteers. The plans were shared

with our new name. Wanting something that is classic, aligns with the fabric of who we are at Westover
and would be easily recognizable in the community
that we are Westover Church’s Children’s Ministry,
the name Westover Kids was born. Our hope is that
this new name will be just the beginning of several
new initiatives in the months and years to come as we
phase in our new theme. So beginning with Promotion
Sunday, Celebration Park will become Westover Kids!
We look forward to sharing more in the future.

Throughout Scripture (see
Matthew 2:36-40), we’re exhorted
to love the Father with our total

great things to do this adequately.
But during my recovery, the Father

limited by your time, creativity, and opportunity.
If you are in need of such help or have the time and ability to give such
assistance/love, perhaps you should consider a mentoring relationship. As
a mentee couple, you would have the opportunity to meet with an older,
experienced mentoring couple who could provide many of those things
listed above. If you believe you desire mentoring or counseling, contact
Steve Maleski. If you are interested in being a mentor, training classes will
begin in January, 2014. Again, contact Steve if you are interested.

Help a Sister Bloom
Are you in a life season when you have time to come
alongside a “younger” sister in the Lord and share what God
has taught you about His holiness, love and grace? Or, do you
long to cultivate a friendship with a more mature woman with
whom you can explore your walk with Christ?
Then join us for a 4-week Woman2Woman class beginning
Sunday, Sept. 8 to learn about God’s plan for “older” women to
mentor “younger” women and to be matched with a mentor
or mentee for a 6-month period. Our prayer is that the Sunday
morning class, when nursery care, children’s programs, and
services are available for family members, will enable women
interested in being a mentee or mentor to attend the class. The
4th class, when mentees are introduced to their mentor, will
be held on Sept. 29 in the Parlor from 3-5pm. Women desiring
to serve as a mentor, who have previously attended W2W
training, do not have to attend the first three classes, but do
need to notify Beth Robertson of their willingness to serve as a
mentor. For more info, contact Beth Robertson (see contacts).

Hannah’s hope
The Bible tells us that Hannah was “barren.” We
know she suffered heartache, anguish and grief
because of her empty arms. Perhaps you do too.
Hannah’s Hope is for those longing for children.
Whether you are suffering from infertility,
grieving the loss of a baby from the womb, are involved in medical fertility
intervention, or considering adoption, our desire is that you would be
encouraged in your relationship with the Lord, find hope in His Word and
share with those who understand the unique pain and loneliness of empty
arms. Please contact us (see contacts) for info.

missionary units (singles, couples or families) that need intercession every day

of the year. We pray for our missionaries because the Lord told us we need to
lift up praises and needs to Him. One way we can effectively pray for them is
Beth Reitz • Admin.
by meeting and sharing. When a missionary is in town, whether on furlough
breitz@westoverchurch.com
or staying in one of our Mission houses, we invite them to come and share
299.7374, x3042
what God is doing in and through their ministry. Oftentimes a short term team

will also come and share their time serving alongside one of our global family

their ministries for His kingdom.
Getting to know our missionaries and their needs makes it possible for us

to more effectively pray for them, but it also gives us opportunities to help them

in other ways. Sometimes they share a need, whether in their presentation, or

through a ministry update or prayer letter. This allows us to take up an offering
to help fill these needs. With these offerings WMF has:

ABOLITION!
And if you spend yourselves in behalf of
the hungry and satisfy the needs of the
oppressed, then your light will rise in the
darkness, and your night will become
like the noonday. Isaiah 58:10 NIV
On the 2nd Wed. of each month
from 5:30-7:30pm, Westover Church
partners with Grace Community Church
(643 W. Lee St., Greensboro), serving
the community through a Worship/
Outreach service and meal. Westover
Church is responsible for providing
food and volunteers to serve/clean up.
Volunteers need to be age 13 or older.
If you are interested in serving, please
contact Brenda Hancock (see contacts).
The Community Soccer Ministry
uses the universal language of soccer
as a bridge to minister to neighborhood
kids, many of whom are refugees. We
kicked-off this ministry last spring and
served about 30 kids on six consecutive
Saturdays. They learned soccer drills,
played games, and shared a concept
from Scripture. The newly-graded and
prepared fields are located behind the
Community Garden on Muirs Chapel
Road.
We are trying to create a more
professional or normal youth soccer
playing experience for a diverse group
of neighborhood children.
What we could use:
• A connection to low cost Soccer
Goals for kids K-5th
• Volunteers to line a field(s), or Jersey
Supplier donation.

If you are not involved in D Groups, now is the time to consider
joining one of the groups. They meet Friday mornings* starting
Sept. 13 from 6-7:30am. The first 15-20 minutes will be everyone
together for exhortation, encouragement, or entertainment. The
remainder of our time will be spent is small discipleship groups
designed to mature men in their faith. Not every group will be
studying the same material. Three different studies will be offered:
Groups - addresses felt needs of men. These
groups require no preparation beforehand. Our
goal is to use these groups to quickly move men
towards greater growth.
Groups - for men willing to do 30-40 minutes of
prep for each session. These groups are designed
to help men fight and win the battles of life while
encouraging the discipline of personal Bible
study.
Groups – for men who desire to dig deeper into
spiritual disciplines and spiritual leadership.
These men would need to commit 60-90 minutes
of preparation time for each session.
*Not all these groups have to meet on Friday
morning. If Friday morning doesn’t work for you, please feel free
to email Pastor Rick Trautman at rtrautman@westoverchurch.com if
you’d like to be included at another time. If you are in an established
men’s group, but would like to use the new curriculum, great! Let us
know and someone from the Men’s Core Team will get you started.
Our Ministry to Men will provide training, encouragement, and
support for group leaders as well as the opportunity to interact and
share ideas with our other “D Group” leaders.

westover staff/human resources
Congratulations!
Mike Kennedy
During the month of September, we are excited
to recognize two of our staff and their working
anniversaries. Mike Kennedy, Executive
Director of Operations, celebrates nine years
and Valerie Stone, Global Communications
Associate, celebrates her third working
anniversary. Please join me in thanking Mike
and Valerie for their years of services.
Valerie Stone
Amy Joyner, Director
Human Resources
Welcome Aboard!
The Westover staff is excited to have Amy Joyner serving in the role of Human Resource Director. Amy began serving in this position Monday, August 5. Amy is a Virginia native and has lived
in Greensboro for the last eight years. She began attending Westover in 2010 and considers
Westover "home", becoming a member in 2012. She is grateful for the multitude of ways to get
connected at Westover. Over the last few years, Amy has been touched by the servants' hearts
she has seen in our pastors, as well as other staff, ministry leaders, teachers and volunteers. She
credits our people and programs at Westover as having a huge part in deepening her walk with
The Lord. While her background includes eight years in the human resources industry, Amy considers her business experience as preparation and precursors for this very season of her life. She
pursued this position in obedience to what she recognized as a calling from God and celebrates
that He has revealed her ministry in this way. She is very excited to serve the body of Christ here
at Westover. Please join us in welcoming Amy to the Westover staff.

Schedule of Offerings
Westover Church has four funds to which
individuals can designate their contributions;
General Fund, Missions Fund, Building Fund,
and the People Helping People (PHP) Fund
(Benevolence). Designations can be made by
simply using the memo line on your check or
by using contribution envelopes located in the
back of the Worship Center. One thing unique
to Westover is that all non-designated funds
received on the first Sunday of each month
are applied to the Missions Fund. All nondesignated funds received on the remaining
Sundays each month are applied to the General
Fund. So, if it is your desire to see that your
offerings get to a specific fund, it is best to
note that on your check each time you make a
contribution. The following is a brief description
of how each fund is used:
General/Building Fund
This fund is used primarily to support the
ongoing operations of Westover Church.
This includes staff salaries, ministry support,
mortgage payments, utilities and monthly
building maintenance.
Global Ministries (GM) Fund
This fund is used primarily for monthly
missionary support, GM staff salaries
and office expenses, care and upkeep of
missionary houses, supporting short term
teams, if necessary, and Spring and Fall Global
Celebration expenses.
People Helping People (PHP) Fund
One half of the funds received are used
to help those who call Westover home
in emergency situations. The other half
supports local ministry projects such as
repairing substandard homes through an
initiative with Housing Greensboro. In
addition, we assist the clients of various
agencies that provide emergency assistance.
With regards to record retention, Westover
Church only began recording financial
gifts when required to do so by the IRS a
number of years ago. It is our strong belief
that what you give is between you and
the Lord. Confidentiality in contribution
information is important and should never
be used to guide or influence any aspect
of the ministry. Current IRS guidelines
require Westover to provide an annual
charitable contribution receipt for all
single contributions of $250 or more. This
is not a cumulative total of contributions,
but this limit applies to each individual
contribution. That is why you may have
noticed that your annual giving statements
do not reflect contributions under $250.

USE OF THE CALENDARS:
Pages 23 & 24 are calendars reflecting events going on at Westover for the year
(page 23) and for the current month (page 24). Page 23 will show each month with the
date of the activity/event scheduled. This will not give you the details about the activity/
event or the time and place. For more detailed info about a specific ministry event, go
to the ministry page and locate the contact name, phone number, and/or email address
and direct your inquiries to that person. If the event/activity is taking place in the
current month, go to page 24 and look up the date and it will give you time, place, etc.
Since most of these events/activities have deadlines for registration or sign-up,
those dates will be reflected under the ministry page in this newsletter or on page 24 if
it’s taking place in the current month. These calendars are updated each month as new
events are added/changed for the year. Cut this last page out and use these calendars to
help plan ahead.
