Literature & Publishing
It has been a jam-packed summer of Québec cultural
activity on our territory, especially in the UK, where no
less than 22 Québec artists/companies took the Edinburgh
festivals by storm in August. It was an exceptional presence
for us, which we hope provided a glimpse into the scale
and scope of Québec’s cultural offering as part of this
incredible international showcase. We are delighted to see
Québec’s ties with Edinburgh and its wonderful array of
festivals growing stronger each year and we look forward
to continuing this wonderful collaboration in the years to
come.

On the topic of collaboration, two of the projects that were supported by this year’s
Québec – UK Cultural Cooperation Fund, organised in partnership with the British
Council, were actually presented at the Edinburgh festivals: an exchange between La
Maison de la Poésie and the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and one between
Théâtre de la Manufacture/La Licorne and the Traverse Theatre, which will both see
reciprocal work presented in Québec next year.
We have just this summer launched another call for projects as part of this fund. The
2015-2016 programme, entitled Connexions QC-UK Connections, will privilege projects
with a digital focus. The deadline for receipt of applications is 23 October 2015 and for
more information please visit www.britishcouncil.ca.
As always, if ever you would like to discuss any project involving Québec, please do not
hesitate to contact Maude and her team who will be delighted to hear from you.
Finally, please take a look inside to see what an exciting autumn programme we have
coming up.
Bonne lecture!

As well as being contemporary, universal and varied, Québec
literature and publishing boasts an immense vitality. Every year,
Québec publishers participate in the most prestigious international
book fairs (Frankfurt, Bologna, London, Paris), and in 2015, Québec
was the guest of honour at the Brussels Book Fair, where the work
of renowned writers such as Dany Laferrière, Kim Thuy, Hubert
Reeves, Larry Tremblay and Martin Michaud was celebrated.
It is worth noting that Laferrière also officially became the first
Québécois to be awarded the Immortel accolade by the Académie
française in May of this year. Winner of the Médicis Prize in 2009
for The Enigma of the Return (MacLehose Press, UK), Laferrière
is author of numerous novels, stories, essays and even books for
young audiences. His work has been translated into 12 languages.
On that topic, the literary translation support programme of the
Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC)
in Québec stimulates exports and helps increase the visibility of
Québec literature internationally. SODEC also supports market
development projects; for example the recently launched
Fellowship Rendez-vous, an ANEL/Québec Édition programme
which welcomes ten foreign editors to the Montreal Book Fair each
year. Another SODEC-supported Québec Édition initiative will see
a group of publishers from Québec attend the Göteborg Book Fair
this autumn.
Internationally, comic and teen literature from Québec also stand
out. The Paul series of graphic novels by Michel Rabagliati,
distributed by Publishers Group UK, has achieved global success.

Excitingly, two more graphic novels from Québec are to be
published in the UK this autumn by Soaring Penguin Press. It’s
hard to be a girl by Estelle Bachelard (Bach) and Perfume of Lilacs
by Samuel Leblanc will have their official UK book launch at the
Québec Government Office in London on 20 October next. Estelle
and Samuel will also present their work at the Lakes International
Comic Art Festival, 16 – 18 October.

As the red-headed polymath and multi-instrumentalist at the
heart of the endlessly inventive art-rock band Arcade Fire, Richard Reed Parry has performed
in front of immense crowds and sold millions of records across the world. But this is only one
aspect of an artist whose unconventional trajectory has resulted in work that is as varied as it is
surprising and unique. This September, he will take part in Cork’s new festival of music, art and
conversation (curated by Bryce Dessner of The National), performing Music for Heart and Breath

Originally from Montreal, pianist and entertainer Chilly Gonzales returns to
London for his biggest UK show to date. Accompanied by Hamburg’s Kaiser
Quartett, Gonzales performs material from his new album Chambers. Using
the string quartet as a sampler, Chambers re-imagines chamber music from
the Romantic period as modern-day pop. Known as much for his intimate
piano touch as for his showmanship, Gonzales’ playing is influenced by
classical and jazz training, and even rap.

FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) Liverpool, UK
As an international collaboration between cultural partners in Liverpool, Aarhus, Berlin, Vienna
and Montreal, Human Futures: Shared Memories and Visions seeks to incite a process of reevaluation in how we conceive our surroundings. This November at FACT, eight international
artists, including four from Québec, will present the final outcomes of various residencies
and expositions across the globe. The artists will also discuss their work as part of an
interdisciplinary conference on 6 November.
An acclaimed multidisciplinary artist with more than two decades experience in media arts,
Montreal’s Herman Kolgen draws his raw material from the intimate relationship between
sound and image, creating pieces that take on the form of installations, video and film works,
performances and sound sculptures.
Sonica presents a triple bill performance by this audio-cinematic sculptor, including
masterpieces AfterShock and Seismik, and the UK première of LINK.C, a moving, elliptical
representation of our urban areas, based on String Quartet No. 2 by Philip Glass and played by
the Maxwell Quartet.
Michel de Broin’s work ranges from assemblage to video
and photography. His works are often retooled everyday
appliances, found objects that disclose an ironic re-utilisation
not only of the mechanic universe but also of tropes of
Conceptual Art and Minimalism, which in his hands take on a
critical dimension.

Dance artists Antonija Livingstone, Jennifer Lacey,
Stephen Thompson, and visual artist Dominique
Pétrin create a series of interconnecting pieces that
explore movement, presence and territory. Each
piece, or “time-based sculpture”, is conceived as
a score that prompts a series of rare, endangered
practices the public is invited to witness. These choreographic sculptures shift between the
human and the animal, the real and the imaginary, the old school and the now, to create a series
of unexpected contemplative landscapes.

6 - 7 November
Festival of Wonder
Silkeborg, Denmark
The Montreal-based interdisciplinary group
PME-ART have one hundred and twenty records,
and stories about each one: historical facts about
the bands, gossip, anecdotes, things that have
happened to them and their friends. Each time they
perform, they find themselves playing the records in a different order, creating new,
on-the-spot connections between the music they love (and even a few songs they hate). In the
complementary work, ‘Listening Party’, Fierce Festival visitors will be invited to bring along
music of their own and share a personal story.
PME-ART will also be performing the works in Manchester (14-15 October) and Cardiff (4-5
November). See listings pages 16-17 for more details.
14 - 15 November
Frölunda Kulturhus
Göteborg, Sweden
The performance Threads is based on The Tale of the
Mountain-Woman, a touching and thoughtful story
of women in war zones. Drawing on the stories of
immigrant women from many countries, the production
is a strong, beautiful, touching and thought-provoking
visual theatre performance with puppets, objects and
gripping acting, accompanied by live violin.
