The Science Behind
Living to 100
A Long-Term Study Reveals How Best To Get There
Your genes are a significant factor
in longevity, but not the main one.
It's how well you live that matters.
After studying 20,000 people, the
British Medical Journal reported
their findings on great life habits.
The top habit of those with
longevity is 30 minutes of daily
activity, followed by a diet consisting
of plenty of fruits, and vegetables
and avoiding bad habits like
smoking and excessive alcohol.
While these things may seem
obvious, the report found some
common denominators among
centenarians regarding their eating
habits, activities and how they
handled stress.
People who live to 100 are twenty
times more likely to have at least
one long-lived relative. But
researchers said these genes are no
guarantee that someone can avoid
fatal or degenerative diseases.
People who live into triple digits
tend to have certain common habits.
They’re never inactive, which
extends beyond exercise. It means
they keep occupied and never really
retire. Even after they left their
"job", they tended to take up
challenging and regular activities
from farming to volunteering.
Flossing may seem an unlikely
habit related to longevity, but it
helps keep arteries healthy by
reducing gum-disease that releases
bacteria into the circulatory system

SOUNDS OF WINTER
Hilda Morrison
The snow is falling
Leaving a blanket of white.
When you lay in bed
It gives a reflection of light.
This is the season
When you hear vroom, vroom.
Mothers bake and clean
And some use a broom.
Wipe off your boots
When you come in from the store.
Though your hands are full
Please shut the door.
I LOVE the snow
And the sound of the ‘mobiles.
Wish I had one
I could drive for miles.

Winter Pet Care
Many pet owners have animals that
spend a significant amount of time
outdoors, especially in the summer.
But your furry friends who love
being outside need special
consideration now that winter has
arrived.
First, consider the role that fur
plays in protecting your pet against
the cold. Long, thick fur best suited
for winter weather has
its limitations. That's
why mountain climbers
are susceptible to
frostbite regardless of
how many layers of clothing.
Likewise, when temperatures drop
even the best fur coats can be
inadequate protection.
Animals with short coats are even
less able to withstand the cold. They
should only be allowed in the cold
for a short period of time, and never
out of sight.
For animals that live outdoors year
round and are well suited to cold
weather (like huskies and other
large thick-coated dogs), provide a
shelter for them. Include bedding,

to inflame arteries. Believe
it or not, a healthy mouth
is related to a healthy
heart.
The report noticed that
exercise, yoga and
movement were a critical
part of life for anyone who
lived a long time. Good,
fibre rich, balanced diets
and excellent sleep habits
go hand in hand with the
basic lifestyle of long-lived
people.
Contrary to the
occasional anecdotal story
you hear in the news about
a heavy-smoking, hard-
drinking centenarian, the
research says it's best to
live a clean life. This
means a diet of whole
foods like fruits,
vegetables, beans and nuts.
People who live a long time
actually avoided binges of
any sort and kept their
eating habits very stable.
Typically, a person who
lives a long life includes
activity and exercise, as
well, they focus on having
healthy relationships
within their family, friends
and community.
They also tended to have

What you need to know
Save Money and Be Safe
Windshield repairs save you
the cost of complete windshield
replacement, while restoring
the glass to its original
strength.
Repairs can be done in less
time than a replacement.
How much will a stone chip
repair cost?
Depending on your insurance company &
coverage your cost may be $0. Insurance
companies would much rather repair than
replace. No insurance? Call for a quote.
Don’t Wait To Schedule A Repair!
If you put off repairs too long, windshield
replacement may be your only option.
Can you see it after it is repaired?
Stone chips usually look much better after
repairs, however the most important part is
assuring the structural integrity of your
windshield.

Should You
Draw CPP
Early?
New rules allow you to take your
CPP at 60 and keep working. If you
do, you'll keep contributing while
increasing future benefits even
though you'll incur a penalty each
month for drawing early.
Remember, it's not just about the
monthly amount. Two key factors to
consider are; when will you most
enjoy the money, and how long do
you predict you'll stay healthy and
active?
Talk to your advisor about the
tipping point that's known as
breaking even, and another factor
called 'leaving money on the table'.
It's nice to have options and there
are many things to discuss. Start by
Googling "Taking CPP early: The
new breakeven points".

winter pet care
outside to “do their business” may
find it very difficult in the cold
weather. Flat coated dogs can be
overwhelmed even for short periods
of time at -30 and colder.
Consider training them to use a
commercial indoor litter box similar
to cat litter. “Pee Pads” and other
indoor facilities are available at your
local pet store. Be patient and
remember that dogs do not train to
litter as quickly as cats. Also, prepare
your backyard for your pet’s needs.
Shovel out a small area and leave
about 1 or 2 inches of snow. If
possible, limit where they can go and
keep it near your back door.
When you find the weather is nasty
DON’S USED CARS & TRUCKS
and uncomfortable, so do your pets.
Keep a close watch for signs of
hypothermia and frostbite; shivering,
swelling of the feet, stiffness,
breathing problems. Extremely cold
weather can be stressful, harmful and
dangerous for your pet, so special
considerations are essential for their
safety and comfort.
