Looking back to the future
Chairman’s Report
Dear member, it
is hard to believe
we are into a New
Year, yet another
Christmas has come
and gone and 2012
stretches out before
us. Where does the
time go? Yet, when I
look back at 2011 it
really has been a brilliant year for HeartBeat and
we needed a year to cram it all in!
After sadly losing Steve Grierson in February it
was important for us as a committee to continue
his legacy and that’s exactly what we tried to do.
The existing committee, already well known for
their commitment and enthusiasm, was further
strengthened when Bob Charles and Lynne
Ratcliff joined us part way through the year.
So what have we been up to? Whilst never forgetting our primary aim is to provide support to
our members through our monthly meetings, we
were also keen to continue raising our profile in
the community through our attendance at local
events such as the WAVS Volunteers Festival and
Pyrford Flower Show.
In addition, our own special events have been
amazingly successful last year with well over 90
people attending our Charity Golf Day and
Barbeque in July, nearly 90 joining us for our Quiz
Night in November and an eye popping 110
people at our Christmas Dinner dance in
December. This was in addition to our monthly
members meetings which yet again hosted a
number of interesting speakers from a wide
range of topics as well as our social evenings.
Add to this the very successful Volunteers
Scheme at St. Peter’s Hospital which was recognised by the Trust at the annual volunteers
Christmas lunch. In less than a year we have gone
from strength to strength and sees its seventh
member due to join the team in January and you
can see how much has been achieved this year.
So what do we have up our sleeves for
2012? In a word, lots!
In addition to our monthly meetings and
volunteers scheme we will be introducing new
aspects to the support we give and receive.
A new supporter’s scheme is underway, whereby
local businesses are recognised on our website
as supporters of HeartBeat after making a
donation. The website itself, which saw a significant increase in the number of ‘hits’ last year,
will be further extended to include more heartrelated resource links.
Further support will be forthcoming for the
Cardiac Rehab unit in the form of new exercise
posters for the gymnasium.

MISSION STATEMENT
HEARTBEAT SUPPORT WOKING IS A NONPROFIT, VOLUNTARY SUPPORT GROUP.
It aims to provide:
A social environment in which to offer support
and encouragement to patients, their partners and
relatives with, or who have experienced cardiac
problems.
Endorse the benefits of continued exercise and a
healthy lifestyle.
Provide current information and practice in cardiac
after-care.
Promote the group’s activities so as to achieve a
greater awareness and understanding of the
potential risks of heart disease and the associated
conditions.
ASPH Chairman, Aileen McLeish, presents Richard with a small
award to the volunteers for the work within CCU
2012 will not only see the Olympics returning
to the UK since 1948, (and to many parts of
Surrey no less!!!) but it is also a special year for us
as it is the 10th Anniversary of HeartBeat
Support.
You can rest assured we will not miss this
chance for us all to celebrate our first 10 years.
Plans for the celebration are already underway
and Sunday the 10th June has been chosen to hold
a garden party for all members, their families,
and supporters of HeartBeat. More information
on this event will be published in due course but
for now please make sure the 10th June in your
diaries.
I look forward to seeing many of you again at
future meetings and events in 2012

Whooooosh.......!
...the sound of 2011 as it vanishes into
the sunset!!
I have to admit to a certain
amount of panic rising in my chest
when I consider how quickly time
is rushing past.
Filling what we do have with happy
memories seems to be a good option.
2011 gave me many of those, both personal
and otherwise. My stepson got married,
then my son, Tom and I had a wonderful
party to celebrate our milestone birthdays.
Tom also announced his engagement and if
that wasn’t enough excitement my eldest
daughter gave birth to a beautiful baby
daughter.
There were sad times too as we lost
some of our Bravehearts members: John
Duckett, Rob Wallin and William Oldall,
who many will remember as our ‘resident
artist’. Mostly they had had long and full
lives, but the untimely and sudden passing
of our Chairman and co-founder, Steve
Grierson left us all reeling, and of course we
are still missing him.
Two very dear and close friends of mine,
lost a much treasured son. Those of us who
know the family are still finding it hard to

come to terms with. I know
that both families have
happy memories of their
loved ones - just not as
many as there ought to
be – but in time those
memories will be in the
forefront of their minds.
We had fun celebrating the 10th
birthday of Bravehearts in May of 2011 and
in Summer we all enjoyed the Golf Day.
There were two Christmas dinners with
the Bravehear ts and finally came the
Christmas Dinner and Dance, a thoroughly
good evening made especially enjoyable
by David Fluck and his wife letting their
hair down. We were also delighted to
welcome Tracy Bradshaw and her husband.
Whilst chatting to David he said how much
he loved seeing everyone together, but
most importantly of all, that everyone was
happy.
Build as many happy memories as you
can – because time will fly no matter how
you spend it!
Our Annual Dinner/Dance was held at
Chobham Golf Club on Friday 2nd December
and was enjoyed by 110 guests.

On a sunny June 11th 2011, WAVS
organised a Festival of Volunteering in
Woking Town Square.
This is an annual event to show the local
community the work being carried out
within our area. This year the event was
supported an opened by Jonathan Lord
our local MP. There were about 15 stands
which shows the amount and variation of
charitable work being carried out in and
around the Woking area. This was
emphasised by Jonathan when he gave his
opening speech.
Early that morning members of the
HeartBeat team, armed with large cups of
tea, made our pitch ready for the long day
ahead. We were hoping that our stand
would raise awareness not only of our
Charity work but also the help and
guidance we can give not only to people
who have had heart problems but relatives
and friends as well. We also wanted to
show the many social aspects of the group.

Although we had a reasonable amount
of interest in our stand, we had to
compete with music and dancing of local
groups, which unfortunately was right next
to us!
The event will be repeated in June 2012.
Bravehearts Ramblers meet 3rd Wednesday of the month.
The walks are mostly local to Woking and vary in length.

VOLUNTEERING AT CCU
PYRFORD FLOWER SHOW

man our stall in the hospital reception area in December.
It has been just over a year since I was first
introduced to Heartbeat Support, and who
could have imagined the success the partnership
would bring?
The introduction of the new Volunteers
Scheme has been remarkable. I have admiration
for the volunteers themselves, of which we now
currently have seven, Richard, Jean, Daphne, Cliff,
Bob, Ray and Sue Stocker who visit patients on
the cardiac unit at least twice per week. From
the very first small steps have come big leaps.
This was new territory for the team, but they
have embraced it whole heartedly, and it hasn’t
gone unrecognized or unappreciated that some
of the volunteers have had their own trials and
tribulations along the way.
The benefit of the visits to the patients and
their partners/next-of-kin etc; is clear to see.
They have the time, the patience and the
experience themselves, to fully understand a
patient’s perspective. It’s this precious commodity
of ’time’ afforded to patients, that makes all the
difference.
Not only have we been lucky enough to
benefit from the volunteers visits, but we have
been fortunate enough to have benefitted from
their fund raising efforts too. Since the re-introduction of the ambulance telemetry system
(transmission of ECGs from the back of an
ambulance direct to Coronary Care), the software
of which was kindly funded by Heartbeat, the
service has gone from strength to strength, and
patients continue to benefit from this facility on
a daily basis. There are plans to develop this
service even further, so ‘thank you’ to Heartbeat
for making this service available again.
I would like to finish by wishing all my
Heartbeat colleagues, their members, and affiliated
services a very Happy New Year. I very much
look forward to our continued collaboration in
making our patients lives, that little bit better.

Once again, we had a stall at the Pyrford
Flower Show in July.
We were blessed with glorious weather and
with our stall looking out to the main arena,
were able to watch the events as the afternoon
progressed.
We held a small raffle, which attracted a lot
of interest and a small profit. We did not forget
the children either, as they received a small gift.
We had a most enjoyable day and spoke to a
wide variety of people (including the leader of
Woking Borough Council, Mr John Kingsbury),
and later even signed up a new member to
Heartbeat Support!
Hopefully, we will look forward to doing the
same again on Saturday 14th July 2012.

A Successful Fund-raising Golf Day
On July 21st, at Hoebridge Golf Club, 13 teams of 4 players
battled it out on a rather wet ‘summer’ day to win the prizes on
offer in our annual fund-raising golf day.
The victors on the day were team ‘Any Holes A Goal’ led by
Carl Jensen, (whose team also won the ‘Yellow Ball’ competition
but generously offered it to the runners up in that, team
‘The Dicky Tickers’ led by Duncan Goldsworthy).
2nd place in the main event went to team ‘Never Up, Never
Down’ led by David Stallwood.
Most birdies (3) went to Richard Edmonds (in Cliff ’s team),
longest drive Michael Lafflin (men), Sue Flavin (ladies) and nearest
the pin was Peter Singer.
In the evening more HeartBeat members arrived to join the
golfers for the BBQ, a raffle was run and as a result the money
raised for our charity was just short of £1,300!
We must say a very big thank you to all the golf teams who
supported us, most of whom are not HeartBeat members, but
enjoy the great game and if it results in money raised for a charity,
even better.
We look forward now to Thursday 19th July when we meet
again to battle it out on the fairways of Chobham Golf Club
followed by an evening BBQ for golfers, partners and HBSW
members.

The Heartbeat Committee
??? QUIZ NIGHT ???
On 5th November we held our annual quiz
night presided over by our exceptional quiz
masters, Hazel and Jonathan Craig-Waller. The
turnout for this event is always superb but this
year was exceptional with the restaurant brimming with teams and the tension was high as we
all took our seats ready for the off.
As usual the questions set by Jonathan and
Hazel were of a very high standard and really got

the old grey matter working. Looking around the
room, there was an awful lot of scratching of
heads and puzzled but determined looks. In the
end Team Densa proved triumphant and well
deserved winners, although credit should be
given to all who took part.
Thanks go to all participants and a well
deserved pat on the back to Jonathan and Hazel
for another challenging quiz, roll on 2012!

TRAVEL TO MEETINGS
A number of members have remarked that they would attend more meetings but are unable to travel
to the Leisure Centre for one reason or another. On a trial basis, we have decided to set up a register
of those members who might attend the monthly meetings if they had transport, and another register
of those members, who would be willing to give a fellow member a lift, if it was convenient so to do.
If any member would like to put their name down on either list, please could they contact any
Committee Member. We must point out that this is not a formal arrangement and can only be on an
ad hoc basis, not a permanent one.
