Crandall Memorial Foundation was started by Donna’s extended family and a small number of friends in 1999. We wanted to do something to help people who lived with Cystic Fibrosis and honor Donna’s memory. She never wanted the disease to define her life and it remains only a footnote as we remember her. It was our hope that by working with patients to lessen the pressures of the disease they too could focus on being as healthy as possible and enjoy their time with family and friends. Our very first project, the now famous gift bags, fit that early mission and was an impetus for many other projects. We learned early on that to make a difference for all of the patients and their families we would need help and so we began our Emerald Eves. Through the extraordinary support of all of the people that have attended over the years we were able to achieve what we initially set out to do. And then an amazing thing happened; the foundation became bigger in so many ways. Our friends began to help us with all of our projects, including shopping for items for the bags, baking cookies and making quilts. Our new friends were able to honor their loved ones by celebrating their lives. The Donna M. Crandall Foundation is no longer just about remembering one person but has now become an organization of Donna’s extended family and a very large number of friends that are committed to making the lives of people brighter and honoring all of those individuals we have come to know and love. We are grateful for your support and we thank you for joining us on this journey. DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 1 WELCOME TO THE 13TH ANNUAL EMERALD EVE! As the Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation celebrates its 13th anniversary, we are thrilled to report that together we have raised more than $1.75 million to help our friends, family and neighbors affected by CF. Every penny stays right here at home and keeps alive our promise to Donna that she will never be forgotten. It has been a privilege and joy to do what we can, when we can, in Donna’s name. We are inspired by the many thank-you letters, cards and emails we receive, and wanted to share a sample with you: "Thank you so much for the financial support you have given us. My husband is slowly recovering from a double lung transplant in Pittsburgh. I have had to fly there and stay for over a month so far. This was truly an emergency situation and your support has helped greatly.” “My family will be forever grateful for the smile on my son’s face during a drawn out hospital stay. To not worry about having to move my car each and every day to avoid being towed, and for the bite to eat in the hospital cafeteria that is so desperately needed for the energy required to sit beside my son for countless hours…thank you.” “Unfortunately, when you have CF, being admitted to the hospital once a year or more becomes the ‘norm’ and after a while your family and friends get used to it and the flowers, gifts and visits dwindle …having CF is never easy, but having the Crandall Foundation fighting for people like me to live a better life and breathe easier makes life a little brighter.” “…to a child with a chronic disease, The Donna Crandall Foundation helps to take the rigor out of the routine of doctor appointments and hospital stays. They provide encouragement and anticipation for the future and have helped our granddaughter understand the importance of compassion and giving to others.” “Receiving gift bags is not only a great way to get your mind off things for a bit, but a wonderful reminder that someone is thinking of you and knows exactly what you are going through. You are making life a little easier (and more fun) with each gift bag you create.” “…All I can say is that Donna would be very proud of all your accomplishments and what you have done for the whole CF community.” The past 13 years have been more than we could have imagined, and the people we have come to know along the way have forever changed our lives. 1 DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 2 DONNA M. CRANDALL MEMORIAL FOUNDATION PROGRAMS WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH, IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO HELP Thirteen years later, the Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation remains a family-run, volunteer-based, non-profit charity with no overhead. We are committed to alleviating the burdens associated with cystic fibrosis and to making life better for patients and their families. To that end, we have never had to say “no” to a patient in need. Examples of 2013 Foundation activities include: • Distributing its 1,300th gift bag. The lucky recipient was surprised to find a certificate redeemable for $1,300 tucked into her special L.L. Bean tote, which also contained Bose headphones, Smart Phone speakers, gift cards to Price Chopper, Starbuck’s and Domino’s Pizza, Downton Abbey DVDs, a journal, magazines, UNO cards, snacks, toiletries and more. • Creating special hand-sewn baby quilts and assembling baby gift bags. In 2013, seven babies were diagnosed with CF at Albany Medical Center. Recognizing the emotional toll the diagnosis can have on new parents, DMCF volunteers reached out. Gift bags included $100 Target gift cards and, since every baby needs a Teddy Bear, commemorative Burke P. Bears. • Providing a Summer Giveaway for patients. A “scratch-off” garden was coordinated by volunteer Michelle Breton-Jackson in homage to her little sister Mary Breton, who had CF and died in 2004. An Irish-themed garden of clovers and flowers bloomed with customized game cards revealing cash prizes of $20, $50, $100 or a chance for one of three grand prizes of $1,000. • Catering Christmas and other special dinners for CF patients who are hospitalized on holidays, anniversaries or birthdays. Volunteers decorate the E5 lounge and set the table to help create a more festive atmosphere. • Renovating Albany Med’s E5 patient lounge - again. Making the lounge a comfortable place for patients to visit with their families and friends was one of our first projects. The new lounge will have a sleeker look with a flat screen TV, upgraded computer and desk, a high-top table and stools for dining, and a microwave oven. Artwork highlighting some of Donna’s favorite things and letters from patients will adorn the walls. • Allocating $50,000 to assist patients facing extreme financial hardship and the financial liabilities associated with lung transplant. Transplant evaluation includes an intense, time-consuming and expensive period of evaluation at transplant centers in New York City, Boston and other metropolitan areas. 2 DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 3 COMMUNITY SUPPORT MAKES PROGRAMS POSSIBLE None of what the Foundation accomplishes would be possible without support. We are thankful to local community groups, schools, families and individuals who, year after year, share their time, talent and treasure to help The Foundation fulfill its mission. This year we are especially thankful to: • Cassie Stricos, owner of Shocker Tattoo in Albany, who raised $7,000 via several raffles in memory of Jessica Allison. • Charlotte Hooper and Jill Dougherty, who organized the 12th annual Swim Mania, bringing in $5,600. As Charlotte’s son heads off to college, she concludes her tenure with the club. We sincerely appreciate the countless hours she spent working on our behalf. • Dan Giroux, who coordinated a bake sale at the Ballston Spa Summer Film Festival and raised $386. • Heather Daniels, who organized the Mile Swim Challenge at Shaker Junior high, raising $1,400. • Teri Potanovic of Boca Raton, Florida, who asked her family to make donations to the DMCF in lieu of birthday gifts. The $500 donation honored the memories of her cousins Bobby and Timmy. • Caroline Burns and Aiden Wolfe, who organized the Niskayuna Wild Turkey Swim and Dive Team’s annual swim-a-thon raised nearly $1,800. • Joan and Steve Hart, who organized the annual Christmas cookie project, delivering 90+ tins to the CF clinics for patients to enjoy. • Shaker Junior High School student Rachel Gee, who designed green and white paracord bracelets to help raise DMCF awareness and made duct tape wallets to hold gift cards included in gift totes. • Maria Dempsey, who shopped for and catered a dinner party for 10 as part of last year’s Emerald Eve auction. • Megan Baltich and Tom Burns from Blairhouse Interiors, who donated their design time to renovate the Donna Crandall Lounge at Albany Medical Center. • Memorial contributions made in honor of David Carroll, Jamie Mormile, Alice Hallenbeck, Ed Traeger, Elsie Phelps, Erin Phelps, Laurie Richel, and Nathanial Hammond. 3 DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 4 A SPECIAL TEDDY BEAR A special teddy bear – the Burke P. Bear – was named after an incredible young man, Burke Derr, who died of cystic fibrosis two days before his 19th birthday. Burke, always a bear collector, began collecting only Boyds Bears when he was 13 and had over 150 in his collection. “Burke never let CF slow him down – even as an older teenager when he had to be on oxygen all the time, he never sat around feeling sorry for himself. He was out to the mall, to the movies and to local retailers in search of Boyds Bears,” said his father, Bob Derr. “He was voted ‘Most Spirited’ by his high school graduating class.” “In February 1997 two of his friends wrote to G M Lowenthal (Chief Designer and President of The Boyds Collection) to tell him of Burke’s collection and that Burke didn’t have a whole lot of time left. Lowenthal responded, saying one of the bears in the fall collection would be named Burke P. Bear after our Burke.” Before he died, a local retailer had the idea of giving one dollar of every Burke P. Bear sold to support CF research projects. Today, Burke P. Bear has joined forces with Cystic Fibrosis Worldwide in order to continue to fulfill the dream of a young man who wished to bring help to all who suffer with CF worldwide. We were so touched by Burke’s story that we decided to recognize yearly those who have supported the DMC Foundation in a special way. We are so honored to have Burke Derr’s parents with us tonight and hope they find comfort in knowing each year we share Burke’s legacy at Emerald Eve. 4 DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 5 PAST BEAR RECIPIENTS Mrs. Lois Abramson Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Matthews Mrs. Libby Andrus Mrs. Dawn McGuinness Ms. Brooke Buttars Ms. Paula Miller Dr. and Mrs. Eric Carson Mr. Mark Morrison Mrs. Norma Carson Mr. John Murray Mrs. Karen Cianci Niskayuna Class of 2009 Mrs. Meredith Crandall Dr. James O’Brien Mrs. Maria Dempsey Mrs. Annette Phelps Mr. Jerry Donovan Mr. and Mrs. Tom Potanovic Mr. Rich Flaherty Mrs. Tracey Riley Mrs. Marion Gray Ms. Anne Marie Roche Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hart Mrs. Beth Sirianni Mr. Dow Haynor Mr. Zachary Smith Dr. and Mrs. Bob Hedderman Mrs. Terri Snow Mr. Kevin Hedley Mr. Stephen Soucy and Mr. Tom Becktold Mr. Michael Held Mrs. Kathy Travis Mr. and Mrs. Brian Hogan Mr. Scott Wolroth Ms. Lynnette June 5 DC_1013_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/20/13 10:36 AM Page 6 AGENDA 7:00 - 9:15 SILENT AUCTION All sheets will be picked up immediately before the formal program begins 7:00 - 7:30 COCKTAILS IN THE PARLOR 7:30 DINNER STATIONS OPENED Ballroom/Parlor 9:15 PRESENTATIONS Ballroom Welcome ~ Mr. David Crandall Presentation of the Burke P.
