Over the past dozen years, Emerald Eve has evolved from a small group of family and friends who gathered at John and Terri Snow’s home to an event that attracts over 300 guests who help raise more than $100,000. Tonight, we pause to remember Donna Crandall’s journey, and to celebrate the achievement of raising $1.5 million dollars in her honor. The Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation is our way of keeping our promise that Donna will never be forgotten. Just as it was in the beginning, the Foundation remains a family-run organization, with no overhead or administrative costs, relying entirely on your generosity. Every dollar we raise goes back to helping local cystic fibrosis patients waging their own personal battles. We could not do it without your help. Crandall Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate our 12th anniversary. Twelve years, 1,100 gift bags and more than $1.5 million later, our mission remains to positively impact the lives of local people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Your dedication and loyalty help us to do just that. The Foundation was established in January 2000 as a special way of keeping Donna’s memory alive for her daughter Kerianne, who was just 15 at the time. The years have gone by so fast: Kerianne went on to graduate from The College of the Holy Cross and then from the University of Texas at Austin, where she received a master’s degree in chemistry. She now resides with her husband Anthony in Birmingham, England, where she teaches high school chemistry. Her mother would be so proud. Donna was organized, smart and unwavering. She never let CF stand in the way of her dreams. She grew up in Levittown, Long Island, the oldest child of Gordon and Nancy Murray. Donna’s life was rich and busy with her brother, Kevin, and sisters Regina and Noreen. They enjoyed paper routes, trips to Ireland and star gazing at the beach. They spent hours bike riding, body surfing and singing at the guitar mass. Kevin will share more insight into growing up with Donna in this evening’s video. A 1979 graduate of Siena College, Donna worked as a manager for the Retirement Services Group at The Ayco Company, LP, for nearly 20 years. Ayco President Tim O’Hara recently recalled that, “Donna was as dedicated to Ayco as anyone could be — working up until her last week of life. She never wanted anyone to feel sorry for her despite the struggles she endured because of cystic fibrosis and, instead, made her focus be her family, work and her clients. She was truly an extraordinary person who made people around her better.” Donna believed one day there would be a cure for CF. She would be thrilled to know that earlier this year, the FDA approved Kalydeco, a new medication that is changing the lives for some patients with a specific CF gene mutation. A pill taken twice a day, Kalydeco has made a huge impact on the lives of two local college students, Scott and Kayleigh Marcella, who will also share their story in tonight’s video. This new medication is improving patients’ quality of life in a way nothing else has. We are getting closer to the cure. But in the meantime, with your help, the Foundation will bring peace of mind and assistance to those patients and families who are still fighting the fight. 1 DC_1012_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/9/12 11:37 AM Page 2 DONNA M. CRANDALL MEMORIAL FOUNDATION PROGRAMS Inspired by Donna’s concern for her fellow CFers, everything The Foundation does is designed to make life better for people with CF and their families. Foundation gift bags are legendary among CF patients admitted to Albany Medical Center. Each canvas tote bag is filled with items especially selected to help make a hospital stay a little more bearable, such as Kindle Fires, Nook Tablets, Nanos or portable DVD players, hand-held games, popular magazines, Mary’s UNO cards, toiletries, snacks and gift cards to Panera, Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbuck’s and Price Chopper. In addition to gift bags, The Foundation also pays for miscellaneous hospital room expenses for patients, including telephone access, TV service, parking passes for visitors and cafeteria debit cards. For patients traveling from far away for their care, the Foundation provides accommodations at the Hilton Garden Inn located across from the Medical Center. It is also our privilege to act as a resource for CF patients and families with significant financial challenges. These efforts can be as simple as helping families catch up with rent or mortgage payments or paying outstanding bills to avoid service termination by National Grid or other utlility companies. We also strive to help those facing unique situations, which this year varied from helping a young single mother buy birthday gifts for her CF son to providing financial assistance to a father forced to use all vacation time so he could be present for his struggling daughter. Families can turn to us when the going gets rough. Our goal is to buoy them through tough times so that they can worry less about everyday challenges and more about helping keep their loved ones healthy. To spice things up for patients going to CF clinic visits, each summer, Donna’s nieces and nephews organize a special giveaway. The 2012 summer surprise was organized by Donna’s niece, Sarah Cheney. This year’s theme celebrated the Summer Olympics. Each patient was given a Team USA drawstring bag, a water bottle emblazoned with “Road to London” and the Foundation logo, and a $50 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card. Each bag also contained a “USA gold medal” with a lucky gold medal count number. At the end of the Olympics, three patients whose medals matched the actual US tally were awarded $2,012. The Foundation‘s Scholarship Program is a valuable resource designated for high school graduates. Last June, eight scholarships were awarded to local CF seniors to help defray costs associated with pursuing higher education. 2 DC_1012_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/9/12 11:37 AM Page 3 COMMUNITY SUPPORT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE In addition to the amazing support we enjoy from individuals and Emerald Eve sponsors, we are blessed by the ongoing dedication and generosity of local community groups and volunteers who work hard to help us with our effort. Every penny truly makes a difference. Over the past five years, the following groups have helped to raise over $75,000 for the Donna Crandall Foundation. We are grateful for all their time, talent and interest to helping us make a difference in the lives of so many local families. 2011 Events • Michael Held organized the Niskayuna Wild Turkey Swim and Dive team annual benefit, raising over $1,600. • Charlotte Hooper and Jill Dougherty organized the Starfish Swim Team’s 11th Annual Swim Mania, raising almost $4,400. • Heather Daniels organized the Shaker Mile Swim in honor of Sydney Reichert, which raised almost $1,700. • Sarah Norton organized the Veeder Elementary School “Penny Harvest”, collecting $1,000 for the Foundation. • And finally, Tina and Tom Hamilton organized the third annual Ryan’s Run Poker Run in August and will present a check this evening. 3 DC_1012_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/9/12 11:37 AM Page 4 AGENDA 7:00 - 9:15 SILENT AUCTION All sheets will be picked up immediately before the formal program begins 7:00 - 7:30 COCKTAILS IN THE PARLOR 7:30 DINNER STATIONS OPENED Ballroom/Parlor 9:15 PRESENTATIONS Ballroom Welcome ~ Mr. David Crandall Presentation of the Burke P. Bear – was named after an incredible young man, Burke Derr, who died of Cystic Fibrosis two days before his 19th birthday. Burke, always a bear collector, began collecting only Boyds Bears when he was 13 and had over 150 in his collection. “Burke never let CF slow him down – even as an older teenager when he had to be on oxygen all the time, he never sat around feeling sorry for himself. He was out to the mall, to the movies and to local retailers in search of Boyds Bears,” said his father, Bob Derr. “He was voted ‘Most Spirited’ by his high school graduating class.” “In February 1997 two of his friends wrote to G M Lowenthal (Chief Designer and President of The Boyds Collection) to tell him of Burke’s collection and that Burke didn’t have a whole lot of time left. Lowenthal responded, saying one of the bears in the fall collection would be named Burke P. Bear after our Burke.” Before he died, a local retailer had the idea of giving one dollar of every Burke P. Bear sold to support CF research projects. Today, Burke P. Bear has joined forces with CFW in order to continue to fulfill the dream of a young man who wished to bring help to all who suffer with CF worldwide. We were so touched by Burke’s story that we decided to recognize yearly those who have supported the DMC Foundation in a special way. 16 D DC_1012_Program_Int_DCProgram2011 11/9/12 11:37 AM Page 17 DONNA M.
