Welcome to the 11th Annual Emerald Eve! Over the years, Emerald Eve has
evolved from an intimate gathering held in Donna’s sister-in-law Terri Snow’s
living room into an event that draws 350 guests and raises more than $100,000 annually.
Just as it was in the beginning, The Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation
remains a family run organization, with no overhead or administrative costs,
relying entirely on the generosity of our loyal attendees and supporters.

On behalf of the Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for
joining us this evening as we celebrate our 11th anniversary. The Foundation was borne from a
promise that Donna Crandall would never be forgotten. Eleven years later, together we have
raised over $1.2 million to help local patients and families affected by cystic fibrosis (CF), the
same disease that Donna battled for 41 years.
Donna was petite, but spunky. She met every challenge in her life head-on. She did it right or
she did not do it at all. She was a perfectionist. She was meticulous and organized. She was a
leader and decision maker. We suspect she always knew there was no time for indecision.
Things just needed to be done right the first time.
Donna was a devoted wife and mother. She was a gourmet cook. She loved the beach and to
travel, especially to Ogunquit, Maine, and Disney World. Perhaps her greatest passion was to be
a spectator at her daughter Kerianne’s athletic and musical events. We know she was there in
spirit this summer as Kerianne married Anthony Meadowcroft at The College of the Holy Cross.
Mr. and Mrs. Meadowcroft are now working and living in Birmingham, England.
A 1979 graduate of Siena College, Donna worked as a manager for Retirement Services Group
at The Ayco Company, LP, for nearly 20 years. She was a special person who taught us all that
giving up was simply not an option.
Donna’s friends and family created the Foundation in January of 2000 as a special way of
keeping her memory alive for Kerianne, who was just 15 at the time of Donna’s death.
Years later, the Foundation continues to keep Donna present in the lives of our family’s future
generations. Nieces and nephews who either don’t really remember Donna or never got to meet
her are as dedicated as the rest of the family to honoring her memory.
In fact, Donna’s nephews, Jack Cheney and Ben Crandall, have waited their whole lives to
attend Emerald Eve, each year watching their older cousins get dressed up and help out at the
event. This year they will also turn 11. Tonight, they will try to out-do their older cousins by
out-dressing them, out-selling raffle tickets and starring in the traditional video shown during
the presentations.
Our mission, inspired by Donna’s concern for her fellow CF patients who struggled, remains to
help patients focus on their health rather than their financial woes. Thanks to your support, we
continue to honor Donna’s memory by never having had to say no to those in crisis.

Funds raised by the Foundation are used in various ways. Our initial program, and one dear to
our hearts, is the gift bag program. Each CF patient admitted to Albany Medical Center receives
a special canvas tote bag filled with items specially selected to help make a hospital stay a little
more bearable. Typical gift bag contents include Kindles, Nanos or portable DVD players, handheld games, popular magazines, UNO cards, toiletries and Donna’s favorite snacks. This year we
have added gift cards to Panera, which opened across the street from Albany Medical Center.
In addition to gift bags, The Foundation pays for miscellaneous hospital room expenses for
patients, who typically spend weeks at a time in the hospital several times a year. Costs covered
include telephone access, TV service and parking passes for visitors. A debit card arrangement
with the hospital’s food service department also allows patients and families to charge back
meals and snacks to the Foundation. In addition, for patients traveling from far away for their
care, the Foundation provides accommodations and meals at the Hilton Garden Inn located
directly across from the Medical Center.
Each Summer, Donna’s nieces and nephews organize a special give-away surprise for patients
going to the CF clinic. The 2010 Summer Project was organized by Donna’s nieces, Kaitlyn and
Sarah Cheney. Each patient was given a summer plans file and inside found either a $25, $50 or
$100 KeyBank MasterCard to use for something fun. Twenty lucky patients also found a Florida
Trip Finalist Card in their file. Adult patient Matt Taylor was the winner of this year’s trip and will
experience the magic of Disney with his family in February. Dear friends of the Foundation, Joan
and Steve Hart, made the trip possible. We think Donna would be thrilled that a CF family will
enjoy the park that she too loved so much.
The Foundation‘s Scholarship Program is another valuable resource for high school graduates
pursuing higher education. Last June, Grafton’s Jesse Bly was presented with a $1,000 scholarship to use for textbooks and other expenses. He is enrolled in Hudson Valley Community
College’s auto mechanic program.
The Foundation is also grateful to community groups and volunteers dedicated to our effort of
making life a little better for CF patients, especially those in the hospital. Throughout the year,
Girl Scout Troops 1797 and 1175 and their leader Christine Keating thoughtfully and creatively
decorated the Donna Crandall lounge at Albany Medical Center to reflect the season or holiday.
The girls hoped their efforts would make the lounge feel cozy and homey for patients. A new
hardwood floor was also installed.

While these give-aways are part of the Foundation’s ongoing effort to help make
life with CF a little more tolerable, it is also our privilege to be a resource to those
with specific, significant financial challenges. For example, this year we have been
able to help in the following ways:
• Sent money to a patient to avoid eviction.
• Provided assistance to a patient who was receiving letters from National
Grid threatening that her service would be turned off.
• Paid outstanding mortgage for several patients behind due to medical bills.
• Provided funds to help a patient get current with auto insurance so she
could drive to work.
• Paid for car repairs so a patient had a reliable vehicle to keep medical
appointments.
• Covered the large outstanding co-pays of several patients.
• Helped a young Mother pay for new prescriptions.
• Provided funds so a Mom could purchase a birthday gift for her son.
• Helped a Father, who was laid off, pay his monthly bills.
• Provided financial assistance to a family pursuing a lung transplant in NYC.
• Alleviated the stress felt by an unemployed and very sick patient by paying
overdue college loans.
• Sent money to a family for their child’s school supplies.
• Set up an account with the on-site restaurant at New York-Presbyterian
Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for a family sitting vigil after
their daughter’s lung transplant.

Silent AuCtion ruleS
1. Bidding will begin at 7:00 pm and close promptly at 9:15pm.
2. All items have a corresponding bid sheet. To enter a bid, please print your
name in the spaces for bidder name and bid amount.
3. You may bid on as many items as you wish and on any single item as often as
you wish.
4. Silent Auction item winners will be determined by the last and highest bid
entered at the close of the silent auction. The winning names will be posted
at the main entrance after 10:15pm.
5. Winners may claim their auction item at the Auction Account Table at the
main entrance. All payments are due this evening, and we do accept VISA and
MasterCard payments.
6. All sales are final. In the event that the highest bidder is unable to pay for
their item, the item will go to the next highest bidder.
7. In accordance with the Internal Revenue Service, the amount you, the patron,
pay as the “winning bid” in excess of fair market value, is considered to be a
charitable donation to the Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation. The
Foundation does not appraise or estimate the value of the auction items.

A SpeCiAl teddy beAr
A special teddy bear – the Burke P. Bear – was named after an
incredible young man, Burke Derr, who died of Cystic Fibrosis
two days before his 19th birthday. Burke, always a bear collector,
began collecting only Boyds Bears when he was 13
and had over 150 in his collection.
“Burke never let CF slow him down – even as an older teenager
when he had to be on oxygen all the time, he never sat around feeling
sorry for himself. He was out to the mall, to the movies and to local
retailers in search of Boyds Bears,” said his father, Bob Derr.
“He was voted ‘Most Spirited’ by his high school graduating class.”
“In February 1997 two of his friends wrote to G M Lowenthal
(Chief Designer and President of The Boyds Collection) to tell him of
Burke’s collection and that Burke didn’t have a whole lot of time left.
Lowenthal responded, saying one of the bears in the fall collection
would be named Burke P. Bear after our Burke.” Before he died, a local
retailer had the idea of giving one dollar of every Burke P. Bear sold
to support CF research projects. Today, Burke P. Bear has joined
forces with CFW in order to continue to fulfill the dream of a young
man who wished to bring help to all who suffer with CF worldwide.
We were so touched by Burke’s story that we decided
to recognize yearly those who have supported the
DMC Foundation in a special way.

Celebrating
1000 Gift Bags
Eleven years ago, Donna's sister-in-law Lori Jenkins came up
with the idea of making gift bags for CF inpatients. Earlier this
year, our 1000th gift bag was given to a little girl from Sydney, NY,
who was in the hospital for the very first time.
To commemorate our 1000-bag milestone, Claudia Crandall designed
and organized a mini version of the bag for you all to have.
The delicate work was executed by many volunteers. Each of you
will receive your bag when you leave tonight. We would like to
