National Disability Services – the practicalities of the NDIS We were very lucky to get Joanne McLean from National Disability Services (NDS) to speak to most staff about how the NDIS is currently working in the trial sites and what it means for support staff in our area once it is fully implemented. Whilst there are still some unanswered questions about the NDIS, Joanne was able to give staff all of the available information and the effects on frontline staff. Diploma of Disability We have 9 (yes 9!) staff undertaking the Diploma of Disability through TAFE NSW. Realising that this was a great opportunity to make an investment in our staff which helps them gain some of the more advanced skills, NVdS have paid for the training. Staff meet with their trainer and do the work required to complete the course in their own time. I’m sure that our current and future Clients will benefit from NVdS staff acquiring these skills and abilities! Upcoming Staff Training Epilepsy Action is conducting several Webinars on Epilepsy for NVdS in August. 5 All this NDS and NDIS is confusing isn't it??? Just to clarify, NDS is “National Disability Services”, which is the Peak Body for Disability Service Providers in regard to training, information, capacity-building and advocacy for services such as ours. NDS often involves itself at state and federal government level to speak up for people with disabilities and the services that provide their support. NDS is currently funded by the State Government and not connected to the NDIS except to give us information about it. NDIS is the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is the new national system of funding for people with disabilities and their families, being implemented Australia—wide over the next few years. Another term to become familiar with is NDIA, the National Disability Insurance Agency, which will be the governing body holding and distributing the funds for people under the NDIS. NEWS – Information about the National Disability Insurance Scheme Introducing the New Staff Release of the Individual Funding Leena Handbook and Intermediary Guide Family and Community Services (FACS) have announced the publication of the Individual Funding Handbook It is designed to assist people with disability in receipt of individual funding provided by ADHC, their family and carers, and intermediaries who administer the funding on their behalf. You can contact Liddy at Nambucca Valley disability Services on (02) 65689802, if you don’t have access to a computer. You can follow this link on our website if you do. NSW is preparing for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), by actively expanding individual funding arrangements for disability services under the Living Life My Way (LLMW) Framework and Ready Together reforms. Through LLMW, people currently receiving FACS disability funding are able to convert and/ or combine their disability supports into an individualised funding arrangement. The expansion of individualised funding will place people with disability, their families, carers, as well as providers and the NSW disability service system, in the best possible position to transition seamlessly to the NDIS. In order to provide clarity and create a fairer system for service users, multiple individualised funding program guidelines have been streamlined into a single document: the Individual Funding Handbook. The Handbook gives people guidance to the rules that apply when managing individual funding provided by ADHC, including what it can and cannot be used for. The simplified arrangements in the Handbook will also assist people to prepare for the NDIS. Nambucca Valley disAbility Services opened our new premises, ClubConnect, on 24th June! The old Anne Gillin’s office was taken over by NVdS at the end of last year and has now been renovated to offer a space for Clients to develop skills and participate in a variety of activities such as music, computer, art and craft, drama, cooking, personal grooming and personal safety. It is also a meeting place for people who might be going to activities elsewhere. NVdS also supports Clients to attend health related activities, such as ten pin bowling, swimming, gym, exercise classes and therapies. 7 ClubConnectOpen! The opening was a great success with around 35 people attending and performances by the Poets & Performers Group. After much deliberation over the names suggested by Clients and families for the new space, the name ClubConnect has been chosen to reflect the intended use of the space. NVdS are very much hoping that local community members will drop in for a cuppa and some socialising or participate in some of the activities with the Clients. People are invited to drop in and meet Cherry, one of the Support Coordinators, and discuss how they can be part of the action at ClubConnect. People can also call us on 65689802 or check our website www.nambuccavalleydisabilityservices.c om.au or NVdS facebook page. Ronnie with Rob and Mum at The Outback Spectacular and she had lots of phone calls and singing the Happy Birthday song. We drove down to Coolangatta, then drove back to Surfers Paradise where we lunched at Pancakes on The Rocks, Ronnie's choice. Ronnie's lunch was chocolate and very decadent. Our On May 18, we had a great time at Movie World. Ronnie and Rob went on the Rio Bravo water ride twice and got wet, as their carriage came down the hill into the water. Phew, they made it through the water Ronnie also saw the 4D movie RIO at the Roxy Theatre at Movie World. The 4D included rocking seats and squirting water (supposedly from birds as they appeared to fly towards us). Watching the movie was strenuous work! We went to SeaWorld at Southport and watched the porpoise show and visited the polar bear, the penguins, seals and sea lions. We all went on the cable car over the SeaWorld complex, then Rob David Koch from the Sunrise Show which was filmed at Surfers the morning of Ronnie’s birthday . Kochie wished Ronnie a happy birthday and gave her a hug. In the evening we went to The Outback Spectacular dinner and show. Fantastic. Ronnie loved it, as did Rob and I. Everything was professional, friendly and enjoyable. 22nd May was Ronnie’s 51st Birthday The Grand Parade Movie World Ronnie catching bubbles after the grand parade at Movie World & The Grand Ronnie with Batman’s security guard at Movie World. She doesn’t seem worried! The next couple of days was spent walking, shopping and catching up with family before heading home on 25th May. Overall a great trip! 9 Kim and Cherry took Sarah Rope and Nick Sayer to Sydney to see the We flew down to Sydney, (it being the first time flying for both Nick and Sarah, who thoroughly enjoyed it). After checking into the Hotel, we sorted sleeping arrangements, unpacked and then had a cuppa. We then went to town, walking for miles. getting lost. and walking a few more miles. We had dinner, then caught a ferry so we could see the Vivid Lights Festival from the Harbour. That was amazing with the Opera House Roof showing the most beautiful colours and designs and non-stop changing colours on the Harbour Bridge. The ferries and boats in the Harbour also had a full display of coloured lights, The tall buildings surrounding the harbour constantly changed colours and designs with one building showing bats, dragons, birds, crawling and flying all over it. Sarah and Nick really enjoyed the night; Sarah danced in the street to the Digeridoo music with so much excitement Nick got dressed up in his favourite Rocky Horror costume and totally enjoyed the night, and Nick couldn't keep his eyes off the lights with a "yeah!! "every now and then. We had coffee when we arrived back at Circular Quay then walked around the streets looking at all the other lights before heading back to the Hotel for a much needed sleep. Up the next morning and walked to Circular Quay, had breakfast on the water front before catching the ferry over to Taronga Zoo. Lots more walking, before having lunch there. Out of all the animals I think Sarah enjoyed the goats the best as she wouldn't stop smiling at them. We then went on the Cable Car down the hill to the ferry; Sarah loved the cable car and Nick eventually enjoyed it after a bit of anxiety at the start. We caught the ferry back then taxi to the hotel, a quick cuppa then shower and dressed for the Rocky Horror Show!!! danced with ladies in the front row at the end and was beckoned over by Craig McLachlan for a hand shake and a hug. Taxi back to Circular Quay, had a late dinner then back to the hotel to a welcoming bed. Up next morning packed then out to breakfast before heading to Paddy's Market where we all purchased something, before collecting our bags and heading out to the Airport for the flight home.
