Enter the LottoLine Contest on page 8 A fantastic Fiscal 2016 Top 5 reasons it’s great to be an LTC! What a year it’s been! We shattered sales records again this Busy summer days are upon us and in the midst of a hectic day, it can be easy to forget why being a lottery retailer is pretty awesome. Here are our top five reasons: (April 1, 2015 – March 31, 2016) year, in large part due to the amazing efforts made by retailers like you. Lottery sales surpassed last years’ record of $1.23 billion by more than $246 million to reach a staggering $1.48 billion. WCLC also led the country in sales growth, which increased by 20%. Serious selling! Lottery retailers in our region raked in $104.0 million in commissions on sales and prize redemptions. That’s up by more than $19.5 million over last year. Awesome fiscal facts! LOTTO MAX is a top performer and this year was no exception. Up by 63.7% from last year, LOTTO MAX sales reached an astounding $491.1 million! The LOTTO MAX $10 million base jackpot was not seen all year and more than half of the jackpots had additional MAXMILLIONS draws. Thanks in part to the success of Super Draws and above average jackpots, including a record $64 million, LOTTO 6/49 had a strong year. The flagship game brought in $302.7 million in sales, which was an increase of 13.7%! Partnering with LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49’s success, EXTRA has jumped into the forefront with a record year! Finishing off with $154.8 million in sales, EXTRA pulled in more than $33 million over last year’s earnings. Is upselling EXTRA worth it? You bet it is! EXTRA accounted for more than $7.7 million in retailer commissions this year alone. Don’t let that money slip through your fingers. Always ask your players if they would like to add the EXTRA! PICK 3 wowed the crowds with $26.8 million in sales. The regional game has continued to see steady growth, even without much marketing support. That’s PICK 3’s highest sales EVER! And now for the #1 fact to share with your customers: lottery prizes totalled $759.17 million in our region of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories! That’s a lot of winners! Spread the word, and watch those sales turn into commissions. 2 • LOTTOLINE fiscal 2016 • it’s great to be an ltc 1 Increased Customer Traffic Displaying the Lottery Ticket Centre (LTC) logo and promotional signage draws customers to your store. Big jackpots also drive traffic right to your doorstep. Display the amounts where customers can see them, using your jackpot alert kits! Did you know that, on average, customers who buy lottery products spend $6 more per visit than those who don’t buy lottery? And, while some customers have already planned what they are buying before entering your store, many people decide to buy lottery tickets after they arrive. 2 Loyal Customer Base Lottery players often come back to the same store to purchase lottery tickets, especially if the customer service is top notch. Keep your selection table tidy, make customers feel welcome, keep up-to-date on lottery products, and they’ll keep coming back. 3 Commissions Your location receives a 5% commission on the sale of lottery tickets and a 2% commission on all prize redemptions up to $1,000! 4 Celebrating Winners Nothing is more exciting to a lottery player than realizing they have won a major prize – it is something that a winner will remember for the rest of their lives. And you get to play a part in that excitement. Delivering such good news is something you’ll never forget either! 5 Helping Great Causes Approximately 34.3% of every dollar spent on lottery tickets is returned to our member provinces and territories to fund a variety of community programs and facilities, sports, arts and culture. Thank you for your help! LOTTO 6/49 Super Wednesdays! Something super-sweet is happening to Wednesdays this July and August! Amare started out as a lottery retailer when he became a franchise owner of a Mac’s Convenience Store in May 1998. In 2007 he purchased his own convenience store where he remained until 2014. His most recent venture brought him to the lottery kiosk business which he operates inside the Safeway store at McPhillips and Jefferson. Since Amare took ownership of the kiosk sales have grown by over 50%. In order to accommodate the newly constructed Liquor Mart Express inside the store, the kiosk was relocated to a more prominent location next to the customer service counter, more visible to the check outs. The move had an immediate effect on the business and despite a few related challenges it was all worth it. Amare said he never has to worry about running out of SNW product or lottery supplies because his Customer Contact Centre Rep, Susie “is the best!” She provides him with the information he needs about product, how much inventory to carry, and she is patient during the call so they have time to work out the best product mix. He believes that three out of five customers will say yes to the upsell of lottery products. He says that if you get to know your customers, you get to know who you can upsell to and who may become frustrated with it. In those situations you need to give the customer what they want so you don’t lose them. On-Line Lottery Ticket Terminal Training In September Amare attended a Lottery Retailer meeting at McPhillips Station Casino. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the current and future state of our lottery business. He says it was helpful hearing other retailers sharing ideas about what works to improve their business and increase sales. Amare claims the camaraderie with other lottery retailers has been a huge benefit to him. He states, “Another lottery retailer shared his balancing and cash out system and he also pushed me hard to get Interac and credit. It may look like we’re competitors but if my business grows theirs will grow simultaneously.” The success of this upgrade to his business is evident in the increased traffic and sales. Does your retail location have a new employee that needs training on the lottery terminal? Did your store fail a Compliance Inspection and now you need to get trained? Were you looking for a refresher on handling transactions on the ticket terminal? We have the answer for you with LottoLearn. Amare is driven to do well in his business, which he credits his grandma. Originally from Ethiopia, his father died when he was very young so he was raised by his grandma. She took him to the city of Addis Ababa with the hope that he would one day “be somebody”. His grandma was poor but she managed to find a way to put him through school where he achieved a degree in physics. He moved to Gondar to teach high school and that was where he met his wife, Eskadar. They married in Sudan before coming to Canada together. Amare said when he first saw Portage and Main he couldn’t believe how quiet our downtown was compared to the very crowded and busy Addis Ababa. Congratulations Amare and Eskadar on being selected as July/August Retailer of the Month!
