Out and about in the the city and surrounding areas all sorts of cribs are on display. At the Bramante exhibition spaces in Piazza del Popolo the annual initiative entitled "100 nativity scenes" Christmas cribs from each of the Italian regions plus those of some twenty-five foreign countries. An enormous variety of scenes representing the Nativity come to life in materials as diverse as coral, silver, wrought iron, wood, ceramic, clay and recycled materials. Another popular crib to be found in the heart of Rome is the one created each year by the city garbage collectors in Via dei Cavalleggeri 5. It's made of two thousand stones, one hundred illuminated dwelling places, angels that fall from the sky beneath the alternation of day and night. Large numbers feature also in the International Museum of the Nativity in the Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta: An image from last year's edition of the Living three thousand individual figurines animate the cribs houCrib in Pereto sed there. The scent of history is strong in the nativity scene to be found in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its Sacred Cradle, a century-old relic, and the crib created by Arnolfo di Cambio (in the XIIIth century). In the Church of Santa Galla in Circonvallazione Ostiense, there is a nativity scene composed of over onehundred and fifty moving figures. Something else that never fails to arouse public interest are the living cribs: true and proper live performances, like the one that takes place in Greccio, home to the first crib in the world back in 1223. Here an amphitheatre-like structure hosts a complex set made of six living tableaux. It is repeated from Saturday 24th to January 8th . On Monday 26th in Pereto, some 50 km from Rome, between the ancient walls of the medieval village, a nativity scene complete with original costumes and Roman soldiers on horseback comes to life.
