Alabama Department of Transportation
2013 CRASH FACTS
Letter from the
Transportation
Director
The Alabama Department of Transportation is committed to providing
safe roadways by using innovative engineering techniques, performing
scheduled routine maintenance, and managing funding in a fiscally
responsible and priority-based manner.
We all share a responsibility for safety on Alabama’s roadways. As you
review the data in the 2013 Crash Facts book, consider your personal
commitment to safety and the things you can do to help reduce the number
of crashes in Alabama. Always obey speed limits; drive sober; buckle up;
share the road with motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians; obey railroad
crossing signals; avoid any and all forms of distracted driving; and lead by
example by teaching young people safe driving habits.
On page 22 the data reflects the number of vehicle occupants killed in
crashes that were not wearing seat belts and/or properly restrained.
Almost 60 percent of fatalities were not restrained
in vehicles where seat belts were available.
Statistics prove seat belts and using proper safety restraints save lives. It’s
also a fact that violators of Alabama’s restraint laws may be fined and
assessed points on their driver licenses. Simply put, there’s no good reason
not to buckle up.

Number of Drivers
On average, less than 1 percent of crashes
end in a fatality. However, for DUI crashes,
the probability is much greater. The
proportion of fatality crashes involving
DUI (3 percent) is five times that of crashes
in general (0.6 percent), as reported in
2013.

Drivers need to be particularly alert when
traveling through highway work zones. When
a road is not in its usual condition due to
construction, it is a good idea to slow down.
Fines for speeding double in work zones when
construction workers are present. Work zone
crashes are dangerous to both highway
workers and motorists. Most work zone
crashes are rear-end collisions, resulting from
speeding or inattentive driving.
