Lez Zeppelin, the all female Led
Zeppelin tribute band, performed at
Bar 24 inside Bill’s Casino and rocked
the house with classic Zeppelin tunes.
Kris Bradley, Jessica Fagre, Steph
Paynes and Lisa Harrington-Squyre
are on a 37-date nationwide tour, and
really enjoyed coming to Tahoe. They
told me this is the most beautiful place
they’ve been to. From New York, the
girls have a CD called “Lez Zeppelin,”
that also has a few original songs on it.
Also at Bar 24 from Reno was
The Saddle Tramps. I love these
guys!! They mix rockabilly and RRated humor to their songs. Their
famous CD is called “Don’t Laugh
It’s Prayed For (Songs of Sacrilege
and Salvation).” Scotty Roller on
electric and acoustic guitars and vocals,
and Big John Van Nolde on upright,
electric bass and vocals, keep the
excited crowd entertained with song
after song. With humorist songs like
“How Can I Say I Love You (With
A Shotgun in My Mouth)?” “Fortune
Cookie Nookie,” “The Bulge in Satan’s
Pants” and “What Would Jesus Drink?”
you can get the idea of the laughs and
fun times with The Saddle Tramps.
These shows and others were
presented by Late Nite Productions.
Look for more fun shows at Bar 24 that
Billy will bring in.
Harrah’s had legendary Glen
Campbell, the 72 year old who used to
have over 50 million people tune in to his
very popular TV show. He looked and
sounded great, gifting us with classics
like “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Gentle on
My Mind,” “Southern Nights,” “By
the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita
Lineman” and many others. Campbell
started out as a recording sessions
guitar player and can be heard on
recordings like “Strangers in the Night”
by Frank Sinatra, “Viva Las Vegas” by
Elvis Presley, “Be My Baby” by the
Ronettes, “Traveling Man” by Ricky
Nelson, “Tequila” by The Champs,
“I’m a Believer” by The Monkeys, and
“Danke Schoen” by Wayne Newton.
He also filled in for Brian Wilson with
the Beach Boys for 18 months playing
bass and singing. He can be heard on
their “Pet Sounds” album. Campbell’s
new CD “Meet Glen Campbell” has
some covers that included songs from
Green Day and Foo Fighters.
Harrah’s huge variety of bands
and artists also included War with
founder Lonnie Jordan on keyboards
and vocals, performing all their classics.
The Family Stone Project with
original members Cynthia Robinson
on trumpet and background vocals and
Jerry Martini (from Sly and the Family
Stone) on sax and background vocals,
played all their classics as well.
Coming next to Harrah’s is Bettye
LaVette and Booker T. May 9, Joan
Rivers May 16, Buddy Guy May 24,
Rick Springfield May 30, and Bob
Newhart June 6. Wow – what a varied
mix to choose from. Buddy Guy, the
legendary guitar player, has influenced
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and many
others over the years. A true treasure
to see perform.
Vex Nightclub at Harrah’s on
Friday and Saturday nights with Go-Go
dancers and cool DJ music, is always a
good time.
Cabo Wabo at Harveys mixes live
music and DJs who provide good times.
Aaron Hagar, Sammy’s son, is there
as host and sings at his dad’s famous
Tahoe hot spot.
The Improv at Harveys, with new
comics each week and host Howie
Nave is always great for laughs.
Carnival Cabaret at Horizon has
the unique show with men impersonating
stars like Reba, Cher, Dolly, and many
others. James “Gypsy” Haake is very
funny as the host.
MontBleu has Opal Ultra Lounge
with tons of drink specials and pretty
girls to entertain you.
Lavish Green performed on the
recent Pints and Paddles Cruise on the
Tahoe Queen. Lots of fun with these
local boys that have a new CD out
called All4U. I’ve played some of their
cool songs on KRLT 93.9 with Program
Director and DJ Steve Harness. Lavish
is a must see to enjoy their original
music! Catch Sanchez bartending at
Turn 3 on certain nights.
There were some fun events like
The Fireman’s Ball, Heavenly Ski Patrol
Fundraiser, Bijou Skate Park Benefit at
Whiskey Dick’s, Apre’s Wine Company
with Ventana Winery, and Divided Sky
with live music. Enjoy the photos!
Watch the Entertainer Show on
KMTN-TV 4pm daily
And remember, staying at home
is overrated. Have fun – you’re in
Tahoe!

In my opinion and mine only.....
Ok, so I missed an article and now have to
make up for it due to all that is going on. I try
not to get lengthy in these things but hey, sh*t
happens.
This Poland fiasco has gone on long
enough, the guy has done the due process of a
BINDING ARBITRATION so get over it and
stop wasting our money and get him back to
work. What a pissing match between the powers
to be and Johnny this is turning into. With all
The Chief has on his plate with the other officer,
a two time DUI suspect, you think he would let
it go. In my opinion and mine only, this is my
take on the happenings within a year or less.
The Chief will be gone and Poland will have his
job back. He, The Chief, tried to get the Police
Officers Association’s backing awhile back to
state that they did not want Poland to return
and they declined to support that notion. Most
of the officers have no problem with Johnny
coming back and the few that don’t personally
want him back feel he should be back because
he has done the due process and won. Don’t be
surprised to see the Police Officers Association
give a vote of “ No Confidence” in The Chief
when this is over. Also The Chief is at the top
of the tier in benefits and pay and his year
review is coming up with no raises in site.
The Grand Jury report that came out last year
talked about internal problems within the force
and the dissent within the ranks of the officers
with regard to management, wasn’t pretty. Most
of the force is young now and these guys are
waiting till this Poland thing blows over before
they can talk without fear of retribution, real or
perceived, and what they are going to say will
shame The Council in the way this was handled.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side
and it’s time take control of the department
with new blood and rebuild with all the young
officers we now have.
NOD. Notice Of Default was filed against
the hole by one of the investors and now Randy
has approx 90 days to pay or there will be
default or a lien filed against the property. I
posed a question to Mr. Jenkins as to whether or
not the words Chapter 11 have been mentioned
and this was the response. The best information
we have from staff of Mr. Lane’s company
today is that he “absolutely” has no plans to
file bankruptcy. LTDC continues to provide
requested information for us to evaluate the
merits of bond issuance, and we are doing
so. Neither the principals of LTDC nor their
representatives have indicated any intention
to file bankruptcy to any of our staff or City
advisory team. Ok, that’s the generic answer
that Randy hopes everyone will buy, along with
that bridge across Emerald Bay that the TRPA
somehow prevented about 10 years before they
were even formed (still trying to figure that
one out). When you read between the lines,
like I do, along with the writing on the wall
here’s what I see. Intrawest, or some other real
estate development company, is circling the
compound right now waiting their 90 days to
scoop up that site for 50 cents on the dollar as
I believe they have been all along waiting for
this moment for Randy to fail. There is no way
he is going to get a loan to pay this one investor
off. Even if he does the others will follow suit
and that would spell Chapter 11 for him. There
is no way he will be able to pay them all off so
in order to save the project, rather than lose it
to foreclosure, I am saying he will file Chapter
11. I love how they put the word absolutely in
italics. Reminds me of when one of the Casinos
got bought out, they said “absolutely” no one
would get let go in the changeover. Three
months later half the housekeeping staff was
gone. GM / Chrysler ring any bells?
Smack, Smack Smack. Did anyone
notice where the new Casino in Pville put
their Fictitious business name statement? The
Trib. I have several business and you can put
the notice anywhere but typically it’s in the
hometown paper. I would have to say this is
their way of “ In your Face Tahoe” for trying to
stop us, neener neener.
Take a look at those beautiful signs in front
of our Senior Center cuz their coming down.
Thanks to the City and that convoluted (word
of the month) sign ordinance we are losing
the best looking signs in Tahoe. WE Can’t
Compete With Nevada in business if we can’t
advertise with banners and sandwich boards on
hiway 50. The Casinos are all advertising two
for one rooms and $59.00 rooms on their huge
billboards but we can’t. I have a friend who
owns a Tattoo shop in town and every time he
puts his sandwich board out he gets a visit from
the sign cops who tell him he will get fined the
next time he does it. I wish life were fair. I took
a drive from his shop around the area to see
how many other signs are out. First off there
was a sign out in the same complex which is
up most of the time. Then there is a tire store
with a banner wrapped around tires, a liquor
store with a sign selling Tire Chains, a Hot
Dog place with a banner, a Catholic Church
advertising enrollment, a Legion hall with signs
on the street, a truck parked with banners on it
at a Pizza place and the Church that actually got
a sign on 50 with an additional sandwich board
not to mention all the Banners and Boards at
Stateline. I find this to be business profiling due
to the fact that all these signs are out most of
the time with no problems yet he is singled out.
Instead of spending money driving business’s
out, like Broc’s and his shop, spending money
fighting Johnny’s Binding Arbitration decision,
spend money on sign incentives. Let the public
decide on whether or not we want to visit a
puppy mill or not, we’re big kids we can do it,
I have faith.All right
Rick, here’s your fifteen minutes of fame.
Every year we, The Face Rats, have an end of
the year party along with bragging rights for
last chair of the season. Here we are on the face
trying to get down for the last chair and we spot
the last chair cone. I am trying to see who got
last chair and lo and behold SIX chairs behind
the last chair cone is Rick Wharton. I have
performed my best sniveling routines to the
Gunbarral crew but never have gotten on more
than one chair after the cone. Rick wouldn’t tell
us what he said but it had to be good.
As Usual: skibumfamily@sbcglobal.net
Later. Skibum.

COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
With pressure from the pork industry
(who knew they had lobbyists?) the
once pandemic influenza known as the
swine flu is now being called by its
less offensive, scientific acronym label,
H1N1. I used to joke that there are times
I just want to hole up like Ted Kaczynski
in a small cabin (minus mailing out the
bombs of course) and try to forget the
outside world. But lately what with the
sluggish economy, the aforementioned
former swine flu and a shoulder season
that seems longer than usual maybe
seeking refuge to get away from reality
doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Of
course if you watch the news long enough
anyone can become paranoid. What
makes me worry is that by naming this
new virus H1N1 it now becomes obvious
that swine flu could now be called Howie
Nave flu. Couldn’t they have found some
other initials to name this thing? Okay
so maybe I’m not completely kosher but
still.
There are so many things in the news
where the comedy writes itself and all we
do as comedians is deliver the material in
our own unique way that’s all. I’m still
cracking up over the next vice presidential
hopeful for the GOP, Miss California
Pageant’s Carrie Prejean. Remember
her? The reigning Miss California hottie
went to Washington D.C. last month to
help launch a campaign opposing samesex marriage. Prejean was named the
first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in
the Miss USA pageant. The 21-year-old
beauty blames her stance against samesex marriage on why she lost. She’ll be
working with the National Organization
for Marriage to “protect traditional
marriages.” The 21-year-old says that
marriage is “something that is very dear
to my heart. Okay, that’s fine everyone
of course is entitled to his or her opinion.
What I like though is that apparently
there’s something else very close to her
heart: fake boobs. And paid for too by
the pageant. Now that’s funny. There’s
just something that slaps hypocritical
about preserving the sanctity of marriage
between a man and a woman all the while
having beauty pageant assist in funding
your fake tits. Anything with a political
slant can be risky you run the risk of
dividing your audience which is why I
have a lot of respect for the likes of a
Lewis Black, Bill Maher or a Will Durst.
Even with this swine flu er, H1N1 I can
be a cynical. I had suggested that a few
of us head down to Shingle Springs to
Red Hawk Casino wearing those surgical
masks and bring a pet pig and proclaim
while sneezing, “What a great trip we
had down in Cancun. Anyone want to
shake our hands?” Too soon?
Laughter brings out the best in most of
us especially during these times. History
has shown us that during tough times
people not only turned to entertainment
for escape but also as a way of keeping
one’s sanity. Comedy has sure savior
for me getting me out of a lot of scrapes
beginning as far back as elementary school
as a way to keep bullies from beating the
crap out of me. It also opened doors most
recently performing overseas entertaining
the troops in Kuwait and Iraq. I plan on
returning this time to Afghanistan.
We’re fortunate to have comedy
around the perimeter of the basin. We
are on our eighth year up here with The
Improv which means I have worked with
hundreds of comics many who I used
to share the road with before coming
up to the lake. Many are close friends
and I have to admit I kinda like being
in one place where I have two different
acts visit each week instead of being
back on the road. This is the longest I
have ever been in one place and that’s
counting all those years at Humboldt
State. Our shows run nightly at The
Improv Wednesdays through Sundays at
9pm with two shows on Saturdays at 8
and 10pm. Dat Phan and Frazer Smith
are here May 6th through the 10th , Ty
Barnett and Stanley Ullman May 13th
through the 17th and Allan Havey with
Joan Fagan May 20th through the 24th.
Over on the north shore the Crystal Bay
Club features comics so the laughs can
be shared equally. They have a Cinco de
Mayo theme happening with an all-Latin
cast which includes headliner Dennis
Gaxiola and co-features Chris Storin and
Mari Esther-Kaplan. Al Gonzales is host.
Back at the south shore two legends
worth checking out are comedienne
Joan Rivers and Bob Newhart. Rivers
performs Saturday, May 16 with Newhart
on Saturday June 6. I have never seen
Rivers but Newhart I have seen and he
still has it. I also recently saw Newhart’s
nest buddy, Don Rickles earlier this year
and what a treat being able to see these
old timers still doing what they love
doing best: stand up comedy. So hang
in there my keepers of the Basin. We’ll
manage to get through this as sucky as it
sounds. It can only get better.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys
every Tuesday through Sunday. Howie
also hosts his own morning show
(“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on 93.9
KRLT radio Monday through Friday
from 6 to 10am and now you can see
him Monday through Friday at midnight
on his very own television show,
“Howie’s Late Night Rush” on RSN. His
weekly film reviews, “Nave’s Raves”
appears in The Tahoe Daily Tribune’s
Action Magazine every weekend. Oh
yeah, he’s now an Airport Commissioner
too for the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Howie’s DVD, “Live From Lake Tahoe”
is currently available after his shows
nightly or you can order a copy on his
website, www.Howienave.com.

Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
What a month! It all started with a
couple incredible shows with Swollen
Members and they definitely killed it as
usual. Their energy makes for quite a show!
Many people know that I had some friends
in town a couple months ago to shoot a live
music video right here in South Lake Tahoe...
It was mostly filmed in Montbleu Resort’s
Poker Room but some was also shot in the
awesome themed rooms at Fantasy Inn.
Those rooms just suited the video perfect!
Ok, so you are wondering who my friends
are that I speak of in the video, right? It’s
The Grouch and Eligh (Living Legends)
for their new song “All-In” from the new
Album called “Say G&E”. The Video and
Song feature renown Poker Player, Lacey
Jones as well as Gift of Gab (Blackalicious),
Pigeon John and a cameo by yours truly,
LateNiteBilly! It was debuted on the Home
Page of MySpace.com and you can find it
on YouTube.com as well. We are all hoping
for frequent rotation on MTV next and I’m
sure you will agree after you watch it that its
not out of the question! Both the song and
video are catchy and well done! Lastly, we
ended the month with a string of shows with
Atmosphere, Afroman and Collie Buddz.
All were a huge success and if you were
lucky enough to catch Atmosphere, all I can
say is WOW. By far, the most incredible
show of the year and more than likely for
a long time to come - oh, and SOLD OUT!
Thank you Lake Tahoe!.
Southern California’s hottest rising surf
roots/rock band, The B Foundation draws
influence from reggae rhythms, teen angst,
and the salty waves of the Pacific Ocean.
Ballyhoo! will also perform as part of the
“Put Em Up - East / West 2009 Showdown
Tour” and South Lake Tahoe locals Strive
Roots and Duke of Bruce will complete the
bill. This is happening Wednesday, May 6th
at Bar 24 / Bill’s Casino.
Now May is time for the Taurus Zodiac
sign to celebrate and that would be me. Its
my Birthday month and I am doing it big as
I do every year! Throwing Birthday Parties
for myself and my friends when I was
growing up is what inspired my to do what
I do today! First off, I will host a “Spring
Reggae Showcase” featuring Pato Banton’s
backing band from Chico, Ca - Mystic Roots.
Serving up an original style based in reggae,
hip-hop, and dancehall (with overtones of
rock, funk, and ska), a Mystic Roots Band
(MRB) live show guarantees more than just
music for your ears, but rather a high-energy
show and powerful experience you’ll never
forget. Truckee Tribe will open the show on
Sunday, May 17th at Bar 24 / Bill’s Casino.
Second, on the actual day of my
Birthday, Wednesday, May 20th we will be
in Reno at The Underground for an all-ages
show with Andre Nickatina and Smoov-e!
This will surely sell out so get your tickets
early (I’ve been saying that a lot lately!)
The Hooliganz from Chico, CA and Angie
Compton will support with World Famous
DJ Red. The list of invited guests is long and
you never know who else might show up! “Andre Nickatina is in a league of his own
in that he is able to combine the hardness
of gangster rap with innovative and socially
conscious lyrics. Not to mention doing so,
all the while, with unsurpassed rhyme and
style... with one of the most distinctive
voices in rap.
To end the month, we will be paying
tribute to (pretty much) everybody’s favorite
band - Sublime. No one does it better than
Lou Dog Trio! They have now been up
here a few times and are definitely a Tahoe
favorite. Some of the fist shows I ever
produced in Arcata, Ca were with Sublime
over 15 years ago and this is as close as you
are going to get to the real thing! Over two
hours of every one of your favorite Sublime
hits. Audiodub will open. The show is
Sunday, May 24th at Bar 24 / Bill’s Casino.
I know Bradly drove the Ladies crazy and
Lou Dog Trio does too!
Now for a quick peek into June... I just
