Biannual News from Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation • Spring 2013 Our family members Dear Foundation Family: To me, every issue of Compassionate Giving is like a family scrapbook. It’s packed with stories and pictures of so many talented and generous people -- all members of the Good Samaritan family. And what a passionate family we are! Our passion for the hospital and the patients we serve is the reason we now have a beautiful Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Center. This same passion is what brought more than 650 of us downtown on a cold February evening to support the fundraising efforts of the Good Samaritans’ 29th Gala. It was a family reunion of sorts! Hundreds of our family members are so passionate, you’ve already donated more than $10,000 to the hospital and/or the Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science. Your names are included in a special section of this issue of Compassionate Giving, beginning on page 11. To every member of the Foundation family – those who are mentioned in the pages that follow, as well as those not mentioned here – you have my heartfelt thanks. It is a privilege to be counted among you. Sincerely, Mary L. Rafferty President and Chief Executive Officer Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Compassionate Giving is published biannually by Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION MISSION The mission of Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation is to secure and steward philanthropic gifts which will ensure compassionate care that will last a lifetime. Although he ended up with an MBA from Stanford, Chuck never lost his interest in a health care career. Joining the Foundation Board, in a small way, is helping to fulfill that long-ago dream, he says. His keen interest in health care also is due, in part, to his job as Vice President Account and Finance and Secretary at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. where he is vice chair of the company’s employee benefit plan. Over the years Chuck saw firsthand “the great work that takes place in hospitals,” when various family members needed care. “It takes a special type of person to work among the sick. I really feel privileged to be affiliated with Good Sam and with the admirable work the staff is doing at the Free Health Center in Price Hill.” BRIAN MOONEY Brian Mooney’s support for Good Samaritan Hospital was ingrained at a young age. “My grandmother worked at Good Sam, and my father served ahead of me on the Foundation’s Board.” As General Manager at Turner Construction, he has worked closely with hospital staff on several construction projects. As a Board member Brian intends to use his extensive sales and management experience “to be an advocate for Good Samaritan on numerous worthwhile projects.” He currently is assisting with the Good Samaritan Free Health Center in Price Hill. Brian and wife Beth have four sons; all Good Sam babies. THOMAS SEDLER Tom Sedler’s lifelong career focus has been the growth of his family’s business. Except for a brief stint in the Ohio National Guard, Tom has worked at Home City Ice since graduating from St. Xavier High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Xavier University by attending night school so he could work during the day! That dedication and hard work has paid off. Today the company provides ice to 15 states from 52 distribution centers. Now Tom lends his business expertise and his dedication to growth in his new role as Foundation Board Member. His family is no stranger to Good Sam. Wife Genevieve was a Good Sam dietitian for three years, and their four sons all are Good Sam babies. COMPASSIONATE GIVING | 4 | gshfoundation.com gratitude NOTHING BUT By Chris Klein Ken and Mary Pat Raupach spent 29 days and nights in Good Samaritan Hospital. He in a hospital bed, she in a nearby chair. And they feel nothing but gratitude for the experience. Ask them for details and they are quick to reply. But don’t expect them to groan about pain or suffering. Instead, these two gush about the extraordinary care and attention they both received, using words like “beyond belief, marvelous, exemplary.”They are quick to compliment George Kerlakian MD and Steve Cleves MD, then Ken adds, “The round-the-clock care from the nurses, the x-ray staff, housekeeping, dietary, and the transport staff also was incredible.” Mary Pat adds, “The expertise and the courtesy they extended to Ken and me was beyond belief.” While in ICU, in-and-out of consciousness, Ken fondly remembers one of the nurses. “She kept talking to me and mistakenly calling me her son’s name instead of ‘Ken.’ I was so touched. She cared so much about me, as if I were her own child.” Ken was especially surprised on his birthday when, “So many staff crammed into my room and sang happy birthday. And they weren’t being silly. They meant it. They were genuinely happy to celebrate the day with me.” Of Ken’s 29-day stay, Mary Pat slept by his side in a chair every night but one. For most, her experience would seem miserable, but “It wasn’t bad at all,” she assures. “The nursing staff brought me pillows, warm blankets – it may seem like little things, but their attention to my needs meant so much.” She adds, “They were always positive, always smiling, and always asking what they could do for us.” Drs. Kerlakian and Cleves were as gracious as the staff. “Dr. Kerlakian checked on Ken every single day, and Dr. Cleves came by six days a week,” Mary Pat recalls. “They cared so much, not just Mary Pat and Ken Raupach medically, but emotionally too.” Both physicians gave their personal phone numbers with instructions to call anytime Ken or Mary Pat had a concern. “I called them twice,” Mary Pat says, “and they were so responsive. It was very reassuring.” Ken adds, “I credit those two with saving my life.” With tremendous gratitude for the extraordinary care, the Raupach’s have made a multi-year financial commitment to Good Samaritan’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Center. Ken explains, “We did so to honor not just the physicians, but every nurse and staff member who were so kind and caring during our stay.” COMPASSIONATE GIVING | 5 | gshfoundation.com His health issues behind him, Ken says he plans to live to 95 (or longer), with Mary Pat by his side. He’ll be grateful for no more hospital stays, but insists, “If I have to be hospitalized again sometime, I wouldn’t go anywhere but Good Sam. I’d even travel from another state to come to this hospital!” To learn about the many ways you can make a difference at Good Samaritan Hospital, contact the Foundation at 513.862.3786 Good Samaritan Hospital MINIMALLY INVASIVE TRAINING CENTER Dedication The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and its donors celebrated the renovation and expansion of its Minimally Invasive Training Center with a special dedication on Monday, February 18, 2013. Good Samaritan Hospital has been a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery and is also a leader in robotic-assisted surgery. Regional accomplishments include: first robotic-assisted heart, urologic, gynecologic surgeries; the first designated training center (1 of only 13 in the country); and first duo-surgeon robotic-assisted cardiac surgery in the United States. Steve Ortner at the console of the daVinci Robot The Good Samaritan Hospital Minimally Invasive Training Center is a preeminent resource for research and education endeavors, where both local and global physicians, surgeons, teaching faculty, and residents are equipped to pursue a wide scope of research interests. The Minimally Invasive Training Center provides physicians with opportunities to practice using innovative technologies designed to replace full, open surgery with procedures that use small incisions to minimize patients' blood loss and pain and promote more rapid healing. Deborah and Dave Lacy with Sister Barbara Hagedorn, S.C. With the support of the following donors, this renovation and expansion will help us sustain an environment that is medically and technologically challenging with a strong focus on both patient care and research. John Prout By Chris Klein Since it opened in 2011, the Good Samaritan Free Health Center has provided a medical home to the uninsured. Now in a new location, the Center is bigger, and its ability to impact the people in the surrounding communities is better. Now at the corner of St. Lawrence and Warsaw Avenues, the new Center officially opened on March 4. A dedication was held on February 26 for donors and volunteers and was attended by dozens of enthusiastic supporters. Amy Konerman, James Konerman, MD, Jane Birckhead and David Burleigh At the ceremony, much gratitude was expressed for the support that has resulted in a significant boost in available health care in this community. In two short years the Center has: • Doubled its size. • Expanded its hours. The center is now open six days a week. • Added oral health. The Center’s popularity within the community speaks to the need that exists there. • The number of new patients increased from 317 its first year, to 672 its second year. • Total appointments increased from 1,100 its first year, to more than 2,500 its second year. Rich Homan, Steve Ortner and Linda Smith Berry Scott Vidourek, Todd Elliot, Shannon Tomek, Joel Engelmeier, Debbie Motz, Dan Motz, Steve Ortner, Amber Dockery, Doug Roush, David Robertshaw and Joe Schwab Construction of the new Center was made possible with philanthropic support from more than 80 generous donors, as well as in-kind gifts of time and talent from many generous companies. Since it first opened in 2011, the Center has relied completely on charitable funding to operate. By donating their time, numerous volunteers, including physicians and nurses, have kept operating expenses to a minimum.
