We’re offering a range of updates
and services that you can benefit from.
We’ll send a bi-annual newsletter,
quarterly emails and regular text
message alerts keeping you up to date
with our great game and all the PCA is
doing. The enclosed newsletter will
give you a flavour of exactly how far
we have come.
Naturally, we’ve had to focus on our
members currently playing, but there
are a number of things we do that
could benefit you.We already spend
the vast proportion of our resources on
our key areas: lobbying on cricket
issues, providing insurance (temporary
and permanent disablement and
travel), financial advice and assistance,
legal advice and representation,
education programs for life after
cricket, benevolent charity funding and
a thriving community program,
particularly in the inner cities
encouraging youth into our game.
With all this going on and the
exponentially increasing cost of
insurance, we constantly need to
generate new revenue streams. There is
so much more we’d like to do and we
need your help to achieve our aims.
With this in mind, we’ve put together
the enclosed list of benefits for you as
an Associate Member to help to
embrace past players back into the
Association and to fulfil our primary
objective – “to protect the rights of
professional cricketers both past and
present”.
I trust there is something for

The Professional Cricketers’

Community & Education Fund
is part of the PCA’s on-going
commitment towards
supporting those currently or
very recently departed from
the game in need of a helping
hand to readjust to a world
beyond.
Unexpected tragedy occasionally
strikes, as in the case of Malcolm
Marshall, the great West Indian fast
bowler, who in November 1999 died of
cancer. As a result of events arranged by
the PCA, we were able to help Malcolm’s
young family to come to terms with their
loss.
Nor does the PCA’s role end here.
There are many worthy and often very
needy cases among cricketers and their
dependents who played in the era before
the PCA came into being. These are the
concerns of the soon to be renamed
Professional Cricketers’ Association
Charity founded by Harold Goldblatt
FCA, who for many years has been
heavily involved in the activities of the
PCA. As Harold quite rightly states:
“Protecting those who, through no fault
of their own, had fallen on hard times led
to the creation of the Charity”.
In 1983, Harold approached the ECB
with a proposal on how the Charity
would be funded. At that current time
players were being fined for slow over
rates. The then Test and County Cricket
Board and the PCA agreed that these
monies should be lodged in a charitable
trust, its object would be to financially
aid former players and their families in
times of hardship.
The newly named Professional
Cricketers’ Association Charity is run by
a board of Trustees and chaired by
David Graveney. The Trustees work
tirelessly to visit the beneficiaries of the
Charity to ensure they are in good
health. At present we assist over 30 cases
but our funds only allow us to make
contributions at Christmas and during
the summer holidays.
It is stating the obvious that with more
funds we would be able to make a more
meaningful contribution.Whilst the
Charity continues to provide invaluable
support, it has been imperative that
assistance should be given to players who
have only recently left the game. The
Officers of the PCA recognise the need
to help players forced out of the game
through non-insurable injuries with the
medical assistance they require and
assisting players in carving out new
careers.
In 1999, Eddie Barlow, the former
South African international suffered a
stroke that ended his term as
Bangladesh’s national coach.
Consequently, Eddie has endured severe
financial hardship that forced him to
leave his homeland. Yet, following PCA
organised events, we were able to provide
Eddie with a motorised chair that enable
him to become more mobile and coach
again at nets.
As with the Charity, the PCA’s
Benevolent, Community & Education
Fund can only distribute its existing
funds. Currently, the PCA stages a
number of fund raising events during the
year that are of great assistance to the
PCA Benevolent, Community &
Education Fund. However, it has become
clear that the Fund could reach out to
assist many more players.
It is our belief within the PCA that the
game of cricket should be more proactive to those who choose this great
game as a career.We believe that far
greater resources than currently held by
both the Charity and the Benevolent,
Community & Education Fund should
be allocated to provide far more
meaningful support to our members.
I regard my appointment as Chairman
of both bodies to be a great honour. I see
it as my goal for the future to lobby the
many organisations who are attached to
the game of cricket, to inform them of
the work that has already been done; also
to alert them to the need to provide
greater finance so that those cricketers
who bring such enjoyment to the
cricketing public should be properly
cared for after their playing careers are
over.
However, functions such as this
evening are crucial to raising necessary
funds and I sincerely hope you’ll be able
to give as generously as possible.
Few vocations carry so
much uncertainty as that
of a professional cricketer.
To play any sport for a
living requires a preoccupation with matters
of daily immediacy, which
leaves precious little time
to consider and plan for
possible disasters or
upheavals in the future.

over the next 12 months
is to increase the
number of counties
involved as well as to
recruit a greater number
of ethnic minority young
people on to the Team
programme.
The programme is a 12-week selfdevelopment programme, and targets
young people from the age of 16-25, who
are the hardest to reach in society.We are
delighted that our relationship with the
Prince’s Trust through NatWest Cricket
has enabled us to assist in helping young
people get their lives back on track again.
2004 has enabled us to expand the
initiative, having being pioneered initially
by Surrey in 2002. The aim is to link the
Prince’s Trust teams to their local county
cricket clubs, where the young people
can receive coaching and motivational
talks from players, chats on health and
nutrition from physios, and get the
opportunity to be in a professional
sporting environment.
From its launch in May 2003, our
initial target was to deliver 15 cricket
linked teams with 8 first class counties up
to April 2004. We exceeded the initial
target and delivered 17 team starts with
11 counties! The initiative has continued
to go from strength to strength in 2004
with 14 county clubs now being involved
with NatWest Cricket, and an anticipating
20 team starts by December this year.
Cricketers have embraced the bigger
social picture and we have been delighted
with the involvement of past and present
players such as Ian Salisbury, Steve
Rhodes, Nadeem Shahid, Alex Tudor,
Mushtaq Mohammed to name a few.
Having role models available to
engage with the ‘Team’ has provided
an invaluable aid in their personal
development. A big thank you goes
to all the players that have given up
their time to help the young people.
The support of the counties has
continued to grow and we would
also like to thank the Chief
Executives and county staffs for their
positive involvement in the NatWest
Cricket initiative in its first 18 months.
Both the Prince’s Trust and NatWest
are great investors in young people, and
this has been epitomised through this
initiative.We at the PCA are delighted
that we can play an important part in the
success of this.
We are very proud of our role in
providing the Prince’s Trust with the link
with the counties, and we will continue to
work with our members to ensure a high
level of involvement from them.
