It’s a great honour for us to host this year’s European Bass Convention and be added to the distinguished list of Paris, Berlin and Copenhagen. In many respects, Almere is a unique city in the Netherlands as well as in Europe. Europe does not yet have that many New Towns and it is becoming increasingly rare for cities to witness such rapid growth. What’s more, we live on land that was still a sea as recently as sixty years ago. Almere was built on reclaimed land in a Dutch polder, some six metres below sea level. Its population is nearing the 200,000 mark. Almere is a young city, both literally and figuratively. The Municipality of Almere is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and one-third of the population is below the age of 25. Almere has a lot to offer. Boasting a coastline of almost 42 kilometres, the city offers many enjoyable spots in, on and along the water. There are several marinas, an exceptional number of cycling and rollerblading routes and many opportunities for pleasantly sheltered walking in beautiful nature areas in the city’s woods. It is with good reason that Almere is referred to as the greenest city on the water’s edge! So I highly recommend that you take some time to wander into town or go for a stroll along the Weerwater just outside Schouwburg Almere. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the organising team of Bass2014. A big thank you goes out to all bass soloists for their unselfish participation. They believe it is essential to share their music and experience! The widely different aspects of the bass in classical music, jazz and pop prove that this instrument is versatile and colourful. The bass started out around 1600 as a counterpart of the harpsichord in the ‘basso continuo’, the musical foundation, just like the jazz bass is in combination with the piano. A melody, a bass line with figured symbols for the intended chords, even the notation of 400 years ago shows resemblances to the way jazz music is scripted. The bass also has known historic episodes with dazzling virtuosos and during this week, everyone can discover amazing aspects of the bass, from ancient music to contemporary repertoire. Foto: Vincent Menzel Dear visitors and participants of Bass2014Almere, Taking responsibility for organising the European Convention and Competition for double bass in the Netherlands, I asked instrument builders and makers of bass-related products if they were willing to support our efforts. There is a circuit of festivals and competitions from which I knew a number of them. The answer was: “Of course we will come to Holland!” The organisers of Bass2008 Paris, Bass2010Berlin and Bass2012Copenhagen promised to share their experience and contacts freely with the team of volunteers for the organisation of Bass 2014. 4 The first thing we had to do was to find a location suited to the logistic demands coming with the organising of four competitions at the same time, and a double bass week comprising over seventy concerts and a bass fair. Many of them turned out to be too limited or too expensive or both, until we got a response from Almere saying Yes We Can. The staff and technicians of the Almere Theatre were ready to help us find solutions to our problems, and the city council was equally willing to cooperate, which encouraged us to persevere with our plans. When funds are limited it is vital to have friends who value culture more than money, and what makes this bass week unique is that all participants are ready This program should contribute to further developing and filling in blank spots in the knowledge of repertory and technique. Where violin and violoncello have evolved to a certain standard, this is less so in the case of the bass, which means that there is new territory to explore and pioneers from many countries are gathering here to present their own compositions. More and more bass players feel irresistibly attracted to works of the great composers, studying and performing their master pieces they expand their technical and musical abilities. Musical master pieces are appreciated as a universal language that surpasses all boundaries of time and location, enabling us to play almost anywhere in the world with musicians we have never met before. Anyone who has formed friendships with others on this basis knows how precious this experience is. This meeting will include renowned artists representing all styles: classical, contemporary classical, avant-garde and jazz – publishers and producers, instrument makers and all you can imagine that exists for and about the double bass. Players will do master-classes, show-cases, clinics and recital performances. A competition of composition for double bass is organized, a player’s competition with four categories recital, orchestra, Jazz, contemporary music, and a mini-bass competition. Our wish is to produce encounters and discoveries, to improve learning and teaching methods, to emphasize technical and expressive progress, and to create exchanges and new links. The convention in Berlin in 2010 announced: After the success of BASS 2008 in Paris the idea to continue the project took shape. Every two years there should be an international double bass congress in a different European city for double bass professionals, artists and friends to interact and mingle. Serious steps were made to professionalise the website. The third convention in Copenhagen followed along the same lines. The founding of BassEurope took place in a general assembly on the 18th of August. The aim of the organisation was described as: To strengthen and inspire the development of bass playing and its network of performers, professionals, amateurs, professors, students, educational institutions, bass makers and manufacturers of accessories. - To propagate the 6 knowledge of bass music, its significance and artistic expressions to a larger public. - To facilitate the biennal European bass conventions in collaboration with the local artistic director and team of volunteers as a very intense, dynamic and unique learning space. - To back up national or regional bass clubs in their work. In the USA the International Society of Bassists was founded by Gary Karr in 1967. On the ISB website we read: With some 3,000 members in over 40 countries, the ISB is an organization for those who teach, study, play, repair, build and enjoy the double bass. The ISB is a forum for communication among bassists throughout the world and across a wide variety of musical styles. Every two years the ISB holds an international convention and double bass competition, a composition contest, and now, a makers competition. If you love the double bass, become a member of the International Society of Bassists today! Clearly the USA have the edge on us as far as organising conventions is concerned with more than 40 years of experience. Dave Holland, a famous jazz bass player say about the last ISB convention in Rochester: The 2013 ISB convention was a truly inspiring experience. The masterclasses that I attended were really informative and I heard some wonderful bass players who are doing things that were almost inconceivable 50 years ago. The opportunity for us all to come together and share our experiences is fantastic for the bass community and for the advancement of the instrument. On a personal level, it gave me a real creative boost and has set some new standards for me to aspire to.” John Patitucci a famous bass guitar and double bass player: It has been over 20 years since I played at my first ISB conventionand like all bassists, I truly appreciate the brother and sisterhood of Bass! Because we look through all music from the ground up, we share a perspective of giving to the music and serving the whole so the music can soar. I have enjoyed the experience at conventions of sharing, learning, being inspired, humbled and driven back to the woodshed, by ALL kinds of Bass playing. I enjoy the magazine and like to learn about different ways to approach playing, hearing about new pieces, books and recordings. I have also enjoyed many articles about my Bass heroes. God bless you all and I hope to see you soon at the next Bass Hang! The ISB can serve as a model to help us overcome internal European differences of opinion. Some European countries have a high percentage of Eurosceptics, but for musicians this attitude would be inappropriate. We would not exclude Russian music from the repertory, now that political tension between the EU and Russia is rising. We appreciate Russian literature and music as part of a common European heritage and consider the undemocratic developments there as a big mistake. We have no doubt that BassEurope can only be a success when all participants share a pro European spirit and embrace its cultural heritage. Barbé likes to perform recitals with piano, plays all types of expressive music. He has played and featured in master classes in about 20 countries. He has been teaching double bass since 1982, notably at the Saint Maur Conservatoire near Paris, where he instructs advanced students from all over the world. Barbé has experimented with numerous technical approaches to the double bass (French and German bows, regulations adapted to morphologies - he likes to integrate all of them. Barbé has been president of the French Bass Society president (ABCDF) since 2001. He is a member of the ISB board, and organized with Riccardo Del Fra the successful international bass convention in Paris in 2008. 8 Hagai Bilitzky Israel Hagai Bilitzky specializes in presenting Middle Eastern music to western musicians, and teaches at the Eastern Music department of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and the JMAD conservatory’s Jazz department. He performs and lectures regularly at international bass conventions and teaches courses in Israel and abroad. The new technical approach Hagai devised for playing the special elements of Middle Eastern music on the double-bass makes it possible to bring the double-bass into prominence as a solo instrument in Middle Eastern and classical Arabic music and is taught by him in workshops for bass players and others around the world. Hagai is a regular member of Algerian pianist Maurice el-Madioni’s trio, Algerian music master Nino Biton’s orchestra, Palestinian singer Amal Murkus’ group and Ladino vocalist Yasmin Levy. Alberto Bocini Italy Alberto Bocini is professor at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneve/HEM. Principal Double Bass player for 5 years in the Orchestra Nazionale dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome) and for 15 years dell’ Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (dir. Zubin Metha), he appears in the same role with the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala (Milan), London Symphony Orchestra (London), the Solisti Veneti and others. As a soloist he has recorded for Denon, Stradivarius, Velut Luna and NBB records. Apart from his “classical” activities, he dedicates himself to the exploration of new frontiers for his instrument, specially in typically “crossover” areas of music: with the double basses quartet “the Bass Gang”, revisiting in a classical chamber music form songs by the famous progressive band “Genesis”, reviving the Italian Opera repertoire (Verdi, Rossini, Puccini, Leoncavallo) under the most varied influences (jazz, rock, bossanova...); with pieces of his own composition. Zbigniew Borowicz Canada Zbigniew Borowicz (Mr.Zbig) is a student of L. Streicher, G. Karr, E. Levinson and E.A. Kolosov from the Moscow Conservatory. He won 1st prize at the F. Gregora International Double Bass Competition in Czechoslovakia (1984). He was the only double bassist to win the Montreal Competition “Debut” (1987). Borowicz was the first classical double bassist to record in the Canadian music industry. He has recorded numerous solo CDs and DVDs. He has also appeared in recitals in the Polish and Canadian radios. He was a soloist with 19 symphony and chamber orchestras (among them: Kingston Symphony, I Musici de Montréal, Polish Chamber Orchestra). Mr.Zbig gave recitals on four continents (Japon, Brasil, USA, Germany). He is a permanent, full-time double bass teacher at the College of Ste-Foy & Laval University (Québec, Canada). YouTube channel: bassaddictify Leon Bosch United Kingdom Gjorgji Cincievski Macedonia The South African-born virtuoso double bassist Leon Bosch is one of today’s most versatile and imaginative artists. His wide-ranging interests have taken him in many directions, all of which have led to a unique career and helped to establish his international reputation as an outstanding musician. In addition to a high-profile orchestral life – he is currently principal double bass of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields – he is sought after as a chamber musician, recitalist, concerto soloist, teacher and programmer. In addition he has built up a varied portfolio of commissions and world premieres and is developing a recording catalogue of an unusually diverse repertoire. Born in Skopje, Macedonia, Gjorgji finished his studies with full honours in the class of Prof.Jiri Hudec, at the RNCM (UK), winning the coveted Professional Performance Diploma with distinction, later becoming professor Hudec’s assistant. He performed at Japan’s Pacific Music Festival and took part in some other major festivals, such as the Salzburg Festspiele, Vienna Modern, Raydale, Montepulciano and played with some of Europe’s leading orchestras. Besides being active as a solo performer, Gjorgji has continued his educational work, giving numerous masterclasses in the UK, Latvia, Cuba, Italy, Malta and France. Very noticeable is his interest in composition and arranging and his constant quest of finding new pieces to be transcribed and performed on the double bass. His successful transcription of J.S.Bach “Goldberg Variation” is published by Hoffmeister editions. Since 2010, Gjorgji has been the principal double bass of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. www.cincievski.com 9 Wayne Darling United States Silvio Dalla Torre Germany Silvio Dalla Torre worked for 20 years as a principal bassist for opera and symphony orchestras in Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium. He taught as a visiting instructor at the Musik Hochschule in Detmold, and performed with several chamber music ensembles which he founded. Since 2002 Dalla Torre has been professor of double bass at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock. Since 2003 Dalla Torre came to learn the four finger system from professor Hans Roelofsen. Silvio played a major role in researching and reconstructing the Bassetto, a small bass tuned in fifths. In 2004 Silvio founded Sidato Verlag, publishing methodical works and solo pieces for the bass. In 2005 he premiered the world’s first cd featuring the Bassetto. Since 2007 Dalla Torre has been musical director of the International Double Bass Week held every year in March at Kloster Michaelstein. Dalla Torre’s systematic research of playing techniques explaining the adventages of the ‘New Dutch School’ and François Rabbath is published on his website: http://silviodallatorre.com 10 A native of Iowa (USA), Wayne performed with famous artists including Bob Brookmeyer, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Friedrich Gulda, Joe Henderson. Woody Herman, Marc Johnson, Arni Egillson, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Jim Pepper, Kenny Wheeler and many others. In the seventies he relocated to Austria to perform with the ORF Big Band and became professor for double bass at the University Music School in Graz (now professor emeritus). Furthermore he continues to perform with a variety of artists and tours/records with projects under his own name. Wayne is active in supporting Double Bass meetings, workshops, and competitions. David Desimpelaere Belgium David studied at the Royal Brussels Conservatory of Music with Prof. Frank Coppieters (double bass), Etienne Siebens (Chamber music) and with prof Rinat Ibragimov at the Londen Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In November 2013, being a laureate of the Brussels Conservatory, David was awarded the ‘Prix Mathilde E. Horlait Dapsens’. David won several prizes in international solo double bass competitions. He was third prize winner in the IV International Serge Koussevitzky Double Bass Competition held in St. Petersburg in December 2011. He won first prize in the International Double Bass Convention Competition (junior category) Brno 2011. In June 2013, David was finalist in the solo competition of the International Society of Bassists held in Rochester, New York. Together with his brother Erik, he released his first CD ‘Reflections on a Song’. Since 2014 David holds the position of principle double bass of the Brussels Philharmonic. Artists and Jury Members Jean-Claude Delache France French bassist Jean-Claude Delache received his first Prize from the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris with G.Logerot. He cofounded ‘Duo i Conte i Basso’ with actress Michèle Delache. Performing at Bass2012 Copenhagen and the Boston Bass Bash, this duo also appeared in French festivals: Mardis Graves, Traces Contemporaines, Ravensar and featured in the ISB calendar 2012. They released a selfproduced dvd & cd and commissioned several new works. They appeared on TLT-TV and radio broadcasts of Radio France. The Courrier Picard calls Mr. Delache “an accomplished virtuoso” and the Dépêche du Midi “he is making the bass sing”. He was a founding member of the Orchestre de Paris and also a member of the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse. As a chamber musician, he cofounded the quintet Quinte et Sens and the Duo i Conte i Basso, performing a.o. works of F.Proto, J.Deak, J. Léandre, G.Trout. Mr. Delache was a bass professor at the Conservatoire de Toulouse. Aykut Dursen Belgium Aykut Dursen studied at Ankara State Conservatory with Tahir Sumer. In Geneva he studied with professor Franco Petracchi, in Vienna with professor Heinrich Schneikart,in Brussels with professor Roland Lafosse and in Paris with Francois Rabbath. He currently holds the position of principle bass of the Flemish Opera Antwerpen/Gent. Aykut is also an active arranger and composer. Playing mandolin, saz and tanbur, he is a succesful arranger of musical cross overs. Elias Netherlands Algerian born Elias has been living in Amsterdam for quite some years now. Completely self-taught on the double bass, he has a good singing voice and performs his repetory of standards, with foot operated percussion almost daily on the streets and squares of Amsterdam. He has a large goup of fans and sometimes appears at official concerts a.o. with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. 11 Guiseppe Ettorre Italy Gottfried Engels Germany Gottfried Engels studied double bass with professor Paul Breuer at the Musikhochschule (Music University) Köln and conducting with David de Villiers at the Folkwang Universität in Essen. He is a member of the Düsseldorf Symphony, professor of double bass at the Musik Hochschule in Köln and music director of the Hofgarten Orchester Bonn. He regularly played in chamber orchestras like the German Bach Soloists and other ancient music orchestras. As a soloist he appeared regularly in recitals and concerts. He gave master classes and courses for bass all over the word. Engels has been invited to conduct several orchestras in Venezuela, Nicaragua, Brazil, Romania, Chile, Uruguay and Germany. He has a special interest in working with youth orchestras, inspired by the ideals of El Sistema, an education program for musicians in Venezuela, publicly founded in 1975 by economist and musician Josef Antonio Abreu. 12 First double bass soloist at the Orchestra of La Scala Philharmonic, Guiseppe Ettorre is an active soloist and chamber musician. He studied with professor Leonello Godoli and professor Franco Petracchi. Winner of the “Bottesini” competition in Parma in 1989 he was also winner of the ARD competition of Bavaria in 1991. He recorded works of Bach, Rossini, Bottesini, Berio, Henze and Piazzolla on two solo albums for the label NBB Records. He plays his own compositions, showing his interest in modern musical forms from jazz to new age, working with Bobby McFerrin and Stefano Bollani. The CD “Sextet” (Decam-Tdd/Edel) contains sixteen of his own compositions for solo double bass, ranging from bass solo to an unusual formation of 3 double basses, harp, piano and percussion. In the educational field he is active giving master classes in Italy and abroad. He plays an instrument made by Guardian Marcucci (1890) Robert Franenberg Netherlands Robert Franenberg was born in Los Angeles, California. In 1981 he received a Bachelor of Music degree from the California State University, Northridge. His teachers were Nat Gangursky, Abe Luboff, Arni Egilsson and Bruce Bransby. From 1982-1984 he studied with Anthony Woodrow at the Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam. Since 1984 Robert is a member of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, joining the Orchestra of the 18th Century in 1988 also playing double bass and violone in the orchestra of the Netherlands Bach Society. He has recorded and toured with the Paul McCreesh’ Gabrieli Consort and Gustav Leonhardt’s Consort. In addition, he has toured with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Bach Collegium Japan, The English Concert and the Dunedin Consort. Robert presented lecture/recitals on the subject of the historic Viennese tuning at Den Haag, Rotterdam and Amsterdam conservatories, playing his 18th Century Viennese double bass. Artists and Jury Members Simón García Spain Bassist and composer, Simón García writes mostly music for double bass. His compositions have been played in Spain, Mexico, Austria, Germany, Japan, Italy, USA, Venezuela, Canada, the UK, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Denmark by many ensembles like The Bass Gang, Bass Instinct, Il Quintetto, Bassiona Amorosa, The Bassmonsters, Contrabajos de Baja California, Chicago Bass Ensemble, Basstards, Barry Gones Bass Quartet, Barcelona Bass Meeting Quartet and bass soloists like David Heyes, Ben Groenevelt, Ernst Weissensteiner, Diego Zecharies, Thomas Martin, Dan Styffe, Alberto Boccini, Barry Green, Kristin Korb, Andrés Martín, Jeremy Kurtz, Milton Masciadri and his fellow composer Teppo Hauta-aho. Recital Music wrote “Simon Garcia’s music is characterised by a rhythmic momentum allied to lively and evocative melodic material, often inspired by his native Spain and the popular styles and idioms of the 21st-century. Simon Garcia is a new and exciting voice in today’s bass world.” Ernst Glerum Netherlands Ernst Glerum studied classical double bass at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam. During his studies he joined contemporary music ensembles like the ASKO Ensemble and improvising music ensembles with jazz musicians like Curtis Clark, Hans Dulfer, JC Tans and Theo Loevendie. With the Amsterdam String Trio and the Instant Composers Pool he played on many international stages. Often teaming with percussionist Han Bennink he performed with international artists such as Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Uri Caine and many others. Ernst is also an active composer and arranger, starting his own recording label “Favorite” in 2004. Ernst joined the jazz faculty of the Amsterdam Conservatoire. In 2009 Ernst was awarded the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize. Recently Ernst played at the North Sea Jazz Festival in July with renowned saxophone player Benjamin Herman featuring Daniel von Piekart and in August in The Concertgebouw Summerconcerts and Jazz Festival Haarlem. www.ernstglerum.nl Barry Green United States Barry Green, a native Californian, served as principal bassist of the Cincinnati Symphony for 28 years, and more recently the California Symphony and Sun Valley, Idaho Summer Symphony. As former executive director of the International Society of Bassists, he directed the Young Bassist program for the San Francisco Symphony Education Department and currently at the University of California Santa Cruz. Green recently moved to San Diego. He is directing an innovative concert series on themes of musical inspiration called: “Bridging Gaps One Music, One World”, including a new production called “Anna’s Way -The Tao of Artistry” for bass, piano percussion and narratoractor. Green is author of three books dealing with the philosophy of music, the mind, body and spirit: The Inner Game of Music (Doubleday, 1986), The Mastery of Music, Ten Pathways to True Artistry (Broadway/Doubleday 2003) and Bringing Music to Life! (GIA, 2009). Green has also written 3 bass books and produced many cd’s. 13 Christine Hoock Germany Petru Iuga Romania Christine Hoock is an internationally active double bass soloist and chamber musician. She studied with professor Günter Klaus in Frankfurt and and Franco Petracchi in Geneva. A versatile virtuoso, Christine Hoock can be heard in the most varied constellations in classical music, world music and jazz. This is also reflected in her highly varied discography. Her artistic partners include Barbara Bonney, Alessandro Taverna, Lukas Hagen, Quadro Nuevo, Enrico Bronzi and John Goldsby. Christine Hoock’s guest appearances have included those at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Musik Triennale Köln and the Berlin and Salzburg Festivals. Concert tours have taken her all around the world. Christine Hoock is professor of double bass at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. She gives master classes at international academies and festivals worldwide and is frequently invited as a juror in international competitions. www.christinehoock.de Petru Iuga has already established himself as one of the foremost double bass players of his generation. Having received his first training from professor Ioan Cheptea he was selected by Yehudi Menuhin for the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad (Switzerland). After further training at the Hochschule der Künste, Bern, under professor Bela Szedlak and at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris under professor J.P.Celea, he became a member of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, and principal double bass in the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Her latest album, “What’s Your Story” features her innovative arrangements of jazz standards. Kristin has taught at the University of Southern California where she was coordinator of vocal jazz studies, Azuza Pacific University, Grossmont Community College and was Director of Jazz Studies at Central Washington University. Wiro Mahieu Netherlands Wiro Mahieu has been playing the bass guitar since age thirteen, starting to play the double bass as well four years later. He studied with Henk Haverhoek at the ArtEZ University of the Arts, obtaining his degree in 1990. He continued his studies, taking lessons a.o. from Ray Brown, Eddie Gomez and Miroslav Vitous. He was winner of the Soloist Prize during the NOS Jazz Competition in 1988 and the prestigious Wessel Ilkcken Jazz Award in 1996. He performed with, lectured on, interviewed and presented some of the greatest names in Jazz: George Benson, John Scofield, Art Blakey, George Duke, Wynton Marsalis to name a few. Mantel produced radio shows and television programs for several Dutch public broadcasting stations and teaches and lectures at the universities of Utrecht and Rotterdam and the Amsterdam Conservatory. Holding a masters degree in musicology at the University of Utrecht, he is one of the rare jazz musicians who successfully combine musical performance and teaching philosophy of music. 16 Szymon Marciniak is recognized as one of major young masters of his instrument. Through his musical approach and lively interpretations he constantly receives acclaim and enthusiastic reactions from listeners and critics alike. His debut, a double solo CD with Sonatas and Miniatures by Adolf Mišek (1875-1955), released in 2012 has been warmly received by the international press (reviews at Fanfare or The Strad a.o.). Contemporary composers Jürg Baur and Chiel Meijering dedicated their works for double bass to Szymon. David Murray Canada David Murray has an international reputation as a solo bassist and teacher. He is currently professor of double bass at Butler University in Indianapolis. He has been a member of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and also toured twice with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. David’s first private teacher was bass virtuoso Gary Karr and he also studied with Stuart Sankey. At Aspen, he won the concerto competition and in 1988 the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. David has made solo appearances, both in recital and with orchestra and has given clinics and master classes throughout the United States, his native Canada, in South Korea, Brazil, Israel, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Germany, and Holland. Artists and Jury Members Giancarlo Pavan Italy Vassilis Papavasiliou Greece Vassilis Papavassiliou, a leading greek artist, is a double bass soloist. Very active and innovative, he is active in classical, contemporary and experimental music. In 1998 he performed the world-premiere recording of Skalkotas’s double bass concerto for the BIS label, receiving world-wide enthusiastic acclaim. Vassilis Papavassiliou holds the position of the principal bass in the Greek National Opera in Athens and teaches in various master classes for double bass around Europe and USA. He is a founding member of the International Classical Music Festival of the Cyclades and is a principal tutor at the Summer Academy of the Cyclades Festival. He is the editor of a series of Greek works for solo double bass published by Orpheus editions. Giancarlo Pavan, professor at the Conservatoire of Cuneo, Adria and Trento, is one of the most distinguished Italian musicians on the jazz and classical musical scene. Side man for important names of the Italian jazz scene from the 1980’s like Pietro Tonolo, Giorgio Gaslini, Massimo Urbani, Enrico Rava, Enrico Pieranunzi, Stefano Bollani, Franco d’Andrea and many others, he has been frequently asked for concerts and tours alongside musicians of international renown. He has played with Chet Baker, Kenny Drew, Art Farmer, Dave Schnitter, Ron Blake, John Abercrombie, John Taylor, Tony Scott, Paul Bley, with whom recorded as a trio, Astor Piazzolla, Richard Galliano. He is also a international specialist in early music, conductor, arranger and composer. He has appeared at the famous stages of the world, participating in events and important festivals wordlwide, recording more than 80 titles for major labels. He worked from 1993 to 2000 in Fabio Biondi’s baroque orchestra Europa Galante and from 25 years with I Sonatori della Goia. Jimmi Roger Pedersen Denmark J.R. Pedersen studied double bass with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, Denmark. Jimmi toured with artists such as Horace Parlan, Benny Bailey, Al Grey and Lee Konitz. He has 100+ records to his credit including two solo bass albums. Jimmi was nominated as best solo instrumentalist in the 2009 JPF Music Awards in Nashville. Over the years JRP has developed a technique based on a fluent mobile left hand moving accordingly to the rhythm using 4 fingers when needed, and a right hand continuously using 3 fingers pizz. Since 2013 JRP is performing every day at his own place ‘KaffeKontra’ in Copenhagen. JRP is chairman of the Danish Bass Society, former president of BASS EUROPE and artistic director of the European bass convention BASS2012 COPENHAGEN. Jimmi runs the company Doublebass. dk that mainly publishes music and technical material for the Bass Academy of Denmark. 17 Stephan Petzold Germany Aristoteles Potamianos Netherlands Stephan Petzold studied double bass from 1979-84 with Heinz Zimmer at the Hanns Eisler School of Music and with Lev Rakow at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. In 1981 he was employed as a trainee at the Staatskapelle Berlin and two years later as principal double bass player at the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. In 1987 Petzold was appointed to the Hanns Eisler School as a Professer. Many of his students have been employed by well-known orchestras. Moreover he had teaching appointments with various youth orchestras. He is an active member of several double bass societies and was the artistic director of BASS2010 in Berlin. He played as a soloist in productions for the WDR, rbb and Radio Moscow. As a chamber musician he traveled with various ensembles to cultural metropolises in Asia, America and Europe. Since 1997 he has been busy with the optimisation of strings and instruments in collaboration with innovative string manufactures. He plays basses from Vincenzo Luccarini and William Gilkes. Aristoteles Potamianos studied at the Hellenic Conservatoire of Athens. After having master classes and private lessons with J.M. Rollez, Thomas Martin and Jorma Katrama he joined the class of professor Hans Roelofsen at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. After completing his graduation in Rotterdam he successfully auditioned for the position of principle bass of the Arnhem Philharmonic (Gelders Orkest) in 1998. Apart from his experience in Arnhem he also played in the Athens State Orchestra and Athens Radio Symphony, and most orchestras in the Netherlands, including the Netherlands Philharmonic, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has played in many chamber music projects in the Netherlands, as well as at the festival “Grazer Frühling” May 1998 where he performed Schubert’s Trout quintet with Paul Badura Skoda. 18 Giacomo Piermatti Italy Giacomo Piermatti studied double bass with Daniele Roccato and Stefano Scodanibbio. In 2011 he obtained his MA from the Conservatory of Perugia with distinction. He is a member of ‘Ludus Gravis’, a unique ensemble of only double basses devoted to the performance of contemporary music. Artists and Jury Members Alexandre Ritter Brazil Morten Ramsbol Danmark Danish bass player Morten Ramsbøl, is one of the most wanted Scandinavian jazz bass players on the scene. His warm and rich tone on the instrument embraces the finest qualities of the “nordic bass sound”, yet with a deep love for the punchy hardswinging American bass tradition. Since 1993, Morten has been professionally involved as a bass player in numerous bands and groups, live and / or recording projects throughout Scandinavia, Northern Europe, The Faraoe Islands and Iceland. Alexandre is a recipient of scholarships for programs such as the Academia Musicale Chiggiana, receiving a Diploma di Mérito, in Siena, Italy, and for the Banff Orchestral Program in Canada. Alexandre’s experience as an orchestral player includes concerts with ensembles in North and South Americas; the Savannah, Charleston, Greenville, and Augusta Symphonies as well as the Porto Alegre and Paraná Symphony Orchestras in Brazil. Hans Roelofsen Netherlands Hans Roelofsen graduated cum laude at the Amsterdam Conservatory and continued his studies with cellist Anner Bijlsma and bass soloist Gary Karr in Hartford Conn. U.S. In 1981 he was the first winner of the Netherlands Music Prize, the highest distinction to be given to a Dutch musician. As a soloist he performed with major orchestras in the Netherlands and abroad and played chamber music with famous musicians like Yehudi Menuhin, Bella Davidovich, Menahem Pressler, Maria Joâo Peres, and the Borodin, Prazak, Leipzig and Vilnius Quartets. In 1984 he was appointed professor at the Rotterdam Conservatory and in 1994 professor at ArtEZ University of the Arts. His pupils became pricipal bass in major orchestras or professors abroad. As a jazz bassist he played, toured and recorded a.o. with Johny Griffin, Deborah Brown, De Daniels, Bob Mintzer and Ferdinand Povel. He has been part of pianist Rob van Bavel’s Trio for a long time. As a classical player he frequently plays in several symphony orchestras in the Netherlands. In theatre productions he played in shows of the famous Dutch comedian Toon Hermans and the famous duo Mini & Maxi. He is a member and arranger of a tango orchestra named Grupo del Sul. Marc was co-founder of Pro Basse, promoting bass instruction for young children. Marc composes and arranges music for various professional orchestras and ensembles. Marc is professor of double bass at the Fontys Academy in Tilburg. 20 Ferdinando Romano started playing classical guitar at a very young age, switching afterwards to the electric bass and the double bass, getting his diploma at the Conservatorio L. Cherubini of Florence. At the same time he studied composition and orchestration in the same music academy with Paolo Furlani. He studied jazz with Ares Tavolazzi and William Parker. As a sideman he collaborated in many recordings of jazz and pop music and he is also active as a composer. In 2010 he published his album ‘Tandem’ together with Marco Poggiolesi. The reviews of the album have been very positive in many music magazines and Ferdinando’s original composition ‘Memories’ has been introduced in the compilation of best Italian jazz recordings ‘Italian Jazz: le 50 migliori tracce del jazz Italiano’ published by Believe Digital. Stefano Sciascia Italy Stefano Sciascia began studying double bass at the age of sixteen and soon began playing with various orchestras and performing throughout Europe and North America. In 1994 Sciascia recorded his first CD: Opere per contrabasso e pianoforte by G. Bottesini. 10 more CDs were released with Rivo Alto Italy and King Records Japan. His latest release is Lux ex Tenebris. Bottesini’s Opere per contrabasso e pianorte, Elegie, Songs of the World and Concerto cd’ was released by Naxos. He has played at every ISB convention since 2001. In September 2004 he was invited to Japan, Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe. He has also gave master classes in Italy, Norway (Oslo Academy), Finland (Sibelius Academy in Helsinki), theTrinity College of Music London, the Riga Latvian Academy, the Zagreb Academy, the Salzburg Mozarteum Academy and the Jerusalem Academy. The Sciascia-Leonardi duo has been performing in Italy and abroad since 1994. Sciascia teaches the double bass class at the Conservatorio di Musica G. Tartini in Trieste. Artists and Jury Members Rudolf Senn Netherlands Dominic Seldis United Kingdom British born Dominic Seldis studied with Duncan McTier at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, Robin McGee at The Royal Academy of Music, London and Klaus Stoll at The Mozarteum, Salzburg. He is currently the 1st solo Double Bass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, a position he has held since 2008. As well as orchestral work, he regularly plays solo recitals and concertos throughout the world as well as chamber music. He gives master classes all over the world and is visiting professor at The Royal Academy of Music, London. Dominic is also appears regularly on British and Dutch radio and television stations both as a player and a personality, most notably as a juror on BBC and AVRO’s ‘Maestro’ (Dutch television). After studies with Göran Nyberg, Knut Guettler and Gary Karr (working as Karr´s assistant in 1981-82) he made his Oslo solo-debut 1985 and after that he has been very active as soloist and chamber musician. He participates in many international double bass conventions around the world He has also been a jury member on international bass competitions. Styffe recorded four acclaimed solo cd´s on SIMAX Classics and recently recorded with violinist Dora Schwarzberg for Contra Classics and a new cd with music by French composer Bernard Salles. He commissioned many new pieces and regularly works together with several composers. In April 2011 Styffe premiered and recorded Rolf Martinsson´s Concerto No 1 with Oslo Philharmonic/ Saraste and later that same year Fredrik Högberg´s concerto “Hitting the First Bass” with the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra, Dan plays a Gasparo da Saló bass made in Brescia, Italy ca. 1580. 22 Margaret Urquhart studied double bass and violone with Anthony Woodrow and Viola da Gamba with Anneke Pols at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. After completing her studies she became a member of many notable baroque ensembles including ‘La Petite Bande’ conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopman), the Leonhardt Consort and Collegium Vocale Gent (Philippe Herrewege). Since 1986 she has been a member of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century (Frans Brüggen) and has been active as a chamber music performer taking part in many radio, tv and cd recordings. She has taught baroque double bass/violone at The Hague Conservatory since 1989 and at the Amsterdam Conservatory since 1999. In addition to her teaching post she also teaches the bass and violone at the University of Salamanca and coaches at the European Baroque Orchestra training courses. She performs and teaches on the 16 foot double bass/violone, the Viennese double bass and also the eight foot violone in various tunings. David Whitla Ireland Canadian double bassist David Whitla moved to Ireland in 1998 and was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra before taking his current post as Lecturer of Double Bass at the CIT Cork School of Music. He is an active freelance orchestral and chamber musician, playing, recording and touring regularly with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, as well as solo and chamber music recitals and contemporary music concerts with groups such as the Cork New Music Ensemble and the Crash Ensemble in Dublin. As an occasional soloist, David has performed recitals in Cork and Limerick, and in 2012 played Bottesini’s Gran Duo Concertante with Sébastien Petiet and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. David plays on a French bass made by Francois Lejeune in Paris c.1765, which was recently restored by Tom Barrett. Artists and Jury Members Thomas Winther Andersen Norway Originally from Norway, Thomas Winther Andersen has lived in Amsterdam for several years. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory from 1988 to 1993 obtaining a Master degree one year later at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. In 1995, he received a grant from a Dutch Performing Arts Fund (Fonds voor de podiumkunsten), to study in New York with Sal Mosca. As a teacher he has taught bass, ensemble and improvisation classes at Norwegian State Academy and at the Rotterdam and Amsterdam Conservatories. Next to playing the bass, Thomas also composes and arranges music for his bands. Many of his compositions were recorded on cd and for the radio. His oeuvre also includes chamber music and works for Big Band. He toured throughout Europe and the USA with different musicians and bands also playing solo bass repertory. Thomas has worked a.o. with: Jimmy Halperin, Lee Konitz, Robert Rook, Michiel Borstlap, Håkon Storm, and John Engels. Donat Zamiara Poland Donat Zamiara graduated with distinction at the Music Academy in Poznan in 2003. He was 3rd prize winner at the Polish National A. B. Ciechanski double bass Competition in Poznan in 2007 and 4th prize winner at the IV International S. Koussevitzky double bass Competition in St. Petersburg in 201. He obtained the position of principal double bassist at Poznan Grand Opera Theater and teacher at the Secondary School of Music and the Music Academy in Poznan. Diego Zecharies Spain Diego Zecharies studied in Montevideo, Jerusalem and Berlin, where he graduated at the ÜdK with Professors R. Zepperitz, K. Stoll and violinist Prof. I. Gronich. He has played as principal bass under the baton of Mehta, Maazel, Abbado, Nagano, Ashkenazy, Temirkanov and Ozawa with famous solists like Ma, Bashmet, Mutter, F.P.Zimmerman, Argerich and Brendel. Zecharies also played in the Israel Philharmonic and Lucerne Festival Orchestra, recording for ARTE and Deutsche Grammophon with Maestro Abbado. Zecharies was principal bass in the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He is currently principal bass in the Galicia Symphony Orchestra and Art Orchestra. As a soloist, he has performed in Spain and SouthAmerica giving solo recitals. He has given numerous master classes and has been appointed director of the double bass in the National Orchestral Training Plan of Uruguay, where he annually gives seminars, concerts and master classes. 23 The Bassmonsters Germany Bass Chorus Ensemble Slovenia Almere Youth Symphony Orchestra Netherlands This bass quartet was founded in 2009 by Claus Freudenstein to support the band ‘Deep Purple’ at the “Great Wide Open Concert”. To have a good name to fit this event he choose ‘Bassmonsters’ for his ensemble that had 12 players at that time. Later the ‘Bassmonsters’ went on developing their arrangements and adapted their playing techniques to their new style. In 2012 they recorded their first cd “Classic meets Rock“ which is the first recording in history featuring 4 double basses playing rock classics in an ‘electrified’ string quartet. In the April issue of the Strad Magazine the cd got a fantastic review and now the cd is known worldwide. In a line-up with bassists Szymon Marciniak, Emilio Yepes, Stephan Bauer and founder Claus Freudenstein they enter the stage in Amsterdam! Zoran Marković has undertaken the task of arranging some of the most famous choral pieces of Serbian music, Song Wreaths, composed by Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac (1856-1914). At the end of the 19th century their fame was spread throughout Europe by The first Belgrade Singing Society. Song Wreaths are based on selected folk songs from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Macedonia, Kosovo and Metohija and Dalmatia. Among them are the most beautiful spiritual compositions of Mokranjac: We sing Thee, We bless Thee and the Cherubic Hymn. The text, a most important factor for vocal music, showed the way for expression in this unusual instrumental arrangement. The first concert of the Bass Chorus Ensemble was presented in the ‘Stevan Mokranjac’ music school in Požarevac in 2006. Since then Bass Chorus performed in Slovenia, Serbia, Italy and Austria. From a couple of kids playing together, calling themselves ‘The Muppets’, to winning third place in the Vienna Summa Cum Laude festival last summer, the Almere Youth Symphony Orchestra has come a long way since its commencement a little over 25 years ago. The AJSO is a symphony orchestra for young people of between 14 and 30 years of age. It has developed into one of the most distinguished youth orchestras in the country and has earned a high reputation for its performance of classical and popular music. Today, it is generally regarded as Almere’s resident orchestra and has been asked ever more often to represent the city of Almere in various events, from performances in festivals to providing the musical backdrop for Royal visits. 24 Led by conductor Hans Welle the orchestra plays symphonies, film scores, jazz and rock, and accompanies singers and soloists. It has played with renowned artists like Jan Vayne and Ernst Daniël Smid, but also performs in prison, television shows and school programmes. He studied under professors Edith Lateiner-Grosz and Willem Brons at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Edwin has played many recitals in the Netherlands (including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw), Italy, Austria (Vienna) and Belgium. With doublebass player Hans Roelofsen he played many recitals in the Netherlands, France, Luxemburg and Germany. They recorded French and Russian romantic music for double bass and piano on the Dutch label Ottavo. The total amount of visits of YouTube of their live TV performance of Glazunov ‘s Elegy opus 17 and Saint-Saëns Allegro Appassionato was given highest rankings and has been watched by more than 50.000 people so far. Together they explored the entire original repertoire for double bass and piano as well as many transcriptions from the cello/piano repertoire. He was invited to be one of the official accompanists at the Bass2012 Copenhagen where he played concerts with 11 different bassists in 5 days. Tobias Borsboom began playing the piano at the age of seven. He received his first lessons from Denise Overeem and Farida Zejnal. He had his early successes in several youth competitions in the Netherlands and was invited to join the YoungTalent class of the Utrecht Conservatory where Paolo Giacometti was his first professor. Tobias joined the master classes of Geoffrey Madge, Vladimir Tropp, Evgeni Koroliov and Klaus Hellwig. He was successful at the Concertgebouw Entree Chamber Music Competion (2006), the Prinses Christina Concours, the International YPF Competition (2007 and 2010), the Canal Festival Amsterdam Conservatory Competition (2012) and the Grand Dominique (2012). He graduated in 2013 receiving his Master of Music certificate at the Amsterdam Conservatory where the renowned Jan Wijn was his professor. In the mean time Borsboom played concerts in the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, America, Canada and Japan, appearing at festivals such as The International Holland Music Sessions, Grachten Festival, Storioni Festival and Bass2014 Almere. Since 2014 he has been affiliated with the Amsterdam Conservatory as pianist of the professor Arno Bornkamp class. He was nominated for the Dutch Classical Talent Award and given a scholarship and extensive tour throughout the Netherlands (2014-2015). 26 Yukiko Hasegawa Japan Yukiko Hasegawa received two Master diplomas; one at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo, Japan and one at the Amsterdam Conservatory, as a student of professor Willem Brons. Yukiko took master classes with Prof. Klaus Hellwig, Jan Wijn, Pascal Devoyon, Arnulf von Arnim, Lee Kum-Sing, Vradimir Tropp, Malcolm Bilson, Piet Kuyken and Alexei Lubimov. Currently she consults Dominique Merlet who is renowned for giving instruction to outstanding young pianists. Yukiko frequently performs in The Netherlands, Japan and in Germany e.g. in 2004 when she performed Beethoven’s fifth Piano Concerto with the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Roland Bader. Since 2012 Yukiko has been one of the accompanists of the International Holland Music Sessions. She appears at numerous festivals such as the Utrecht Festival of Ancient Music, the Cello Festival Zutphen, Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam and the Summer Festival at the isle of Schiermonnikoog. She organizes with Podium Talent Nederland the “Festival der Kunsten Statenkwartier” in The Hague, a festival for young professional visual artists and musicians. Marina Pacowski France Siebe Henstra Netherlands Siebe Henstra studied the harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt and TonKoopman at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He has won prizes at competitions in Edinburgh (1982) and Amsterdam (1987). He worked as continuo player with several famous directors - e.g. Frans Brüggen, Gustav Leonhardt and Jos van Veldhoven-.As a soloist on harpsichord and clavichord he gave numerous performances troughout the world. He is continuo player (organ and harpsichord) of the Netherlands Bach Society, forms a duo with cellist Lucia Swarts and the duo ‘Der prallende Doppelschlag’ with Menno van Delft on two clavichords, harpsichords or organs. Siebe Henstra has given a number of masterclasses in Finland, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France, Japan, the USA, Mexico, Catalunya, and the Czech Republic. He teaches harpsichord since 1988 at the Utrecht conservatory. He made several solo Cd’s. One entirely devoted to 17th century italian music for harpsichord solo and another one with the complete keyboard works of Matthias Weckmann, both released by Ricercar. A CD with clavichord works for the MIM in Brussels and he contributed to the complete recording of Sweelinck which got an Edison award (2003) as well as an award from the ‘Deutsche Schallplatten Kritik Preis (2003). Marina Pacowski has many different sides to her artistic career: she is at once a classical pianist, actress and opera singer’s coach as well as a pianist and jazz singer with several groups, and she has performed in many different countries (the USA, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium) – and of course, in France. She studied with Ada Labeque (Katia and Marielle Labeque’s mother), Alain Motard, Angeline Pondepeyre and Peio Çabalette and she perfected her technique alongside Bruno Rigutto, Margaret Singer, Cordelia Huberti, Serge Zapolski and the conductors Robert Delcroix and Dejan Savic. She has also worked with many other people, each of whom has helped her to grow musically. She won the Hanz Gabor Belvedere International Competition (Vienna, Austria) in the “Singer’s Coaching Direction” category, just a few months after being chosen as the Coach for singers’ director for the Young Voices of the Rhine ( Jeunes voix du Rhin) during their 2000/2001 season (as part of the National Opera of the Rhine’s programme). She also obtained first prizes in piano, accompaniment, chamber music, analysis and composition at the Conservatoires of Bayonne, Bordeaux, and Rueil Malmaison (Paris). Vaughan Schlepp Netherlands Vaughan Schlepp (Tokyo, 1956) received his first piano lessons in England, where he performed at the age of five. He continued his studies in the United States, played a piano concerto when he was twelve and graduated magna cum laude from the Eastman School of Music in New York. His interest in early music took him to The Netherlands for study with Gustav Leonhardt. As a performer on the harpsichord as well as on the 18th and 19th-century fortepiano and the modern piano, Vaughan has given numerous recitals and master-classes throughout the world as well as having made recordings for radio, television and CD. He has performed as soloist with orchestras in The Netherlands and America, and as a chamber musician with artists as Anner Bijlsma, Lucy van Dael and Barbara Schlick. As organist he has participated in the recordings of the complete Bach Cantatas released in 2001. Vaughan Schlepp is intensively involved with modern music and theatre, and is active as a teacher and coach for both singers and instrumentalists. Coming from Hong Kong, Venezuela, the USA and many European countries, more than sixty young bass players are competing for prizes that have been generously donated by our sponsors. The competitions are all open to the audience except the youngest age groups for which it is already an experience to play for a jury and too much pressure should be avoided. Bass students aiming for a professional career will not be disturbed by the presence of the audience, they might have thoughts about who is in the jury. Therefore the jury has been balanced out as far as the style of playing is concerned. The compulsory pieces were chosen to keep the balance between technical and musical demands on the candidates. In the classical competition all candidates were asked to send in recordings of a classical double bass concerto, two contrasting movements from a solo cello suite of J.S. Bach and Glière’s opus 9 Intermezzo and Tarantella written in 1905 for the Russian bass virtuoso Sergei Koussevitsky. The differences in recording technique were such that the jury had to conclude that a selection based on audio recording gives little information about the quantity and quality of the sound in comparison to the piano. Therefore most of the work of the jury had to be done in Almere, where all candidates play under the same circumstances. A new element in this competition is the obligatory sonata composed by Willem de Fesch (1687-1761), who was an active composer and concertmaster in the Theater of Amsterdam. Candidates have to play this sonate with a harpsichordist to show their ability of stylistic performance of ancient music. Next to that they had a choice from classical and romantic sonata repertory and a piece from the 20th century or more recent date. From more than twenty, eight candidates are selected for the finals to be held in the Amsterdam Conservatoire Thursday August 28 at 20:15 were three winners will be chosen. Singers have a choice between three editions; for high, medium or low voice. We encourage our colleagues and students to make transcriptions that fit our instrument best. Winning a competition is a big stimulus for only a happy few, but far more important is the learning effect for all concerned. On the long run the real winners might be those who came and left without a prize today, but were vitalised by the effects of participating. De building consists of a onefloor-tall floor measuring 100 by 100 metres. extending from the bank out over the water like a diving board. Rising out of this ‘base slice’ are three volumes; a small one for the art centre (150 square metres) and two big volumes for the theatre and stage tower (350 and 1050). A section of the building is contained in a basement while another section is raised on stilts. A delicate reflection of light and air – that’s the impression the building leaves after a visit. The ensemble is austere and sensitive, the architecture is appealing. The façades are made entirely of glass and allow light to penetrate the building horizontally, and corridors bring the light further inside. That also results in long vistas. From the entrance you can see the water glistening 100 metres further ahead. The roof is largely closed, but light shafts made of translucent synthetic material and patios allow for vertical light penetration. The studios and rooms for music classes are arranged next to square-like inner spaces. The theater has three concert halls; the largest has 1000 seats, the mediumsized hall 350 and the smallest hall has 150 seats. Esplanade 10, 1315 TA Almere www.schouwburgalmere.nl Boat tour through Seventeenth-Century Canal Ring Tuesday August 26 The historic urban ensemble of the canal district of Amsterdam was a project for a new ‘port city’ built at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries. It comprises a network of canals to the west and south of the historic old town and the medieval port that encircled the old town and was accompanied by the repositioning inland of the city’s fortified boundaries, the Singelgracht. This was a long-term programme that involved extending the city by draining the swampland, using a system of canals in concentric arcs and filling in the intermediate spaces. These spaces allowed the development of a homogeneous urban ensemble including gabled houses and numerous monuments. This urban extension was the largest and most homogeneous of its time. It was a model of large-scale town planning, and served as a reference throughout the world until the 19th century. It is a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering, town planning, and a rational programme of construction and bourgeois architecture. It is a unique and innovative, large-scale but homogeneous urban ensemble. The Amsterdam Canal District bears witness to an exchange of considerable influences over almost two centuries, in terms not only of civil engineering, town planning, and architecture, but also of a series of technical, maritime, and cultural fields. In the 17th century Amsterdam was a crucial centre for international commercial trade and intellectual exchange, for the formation and the dissemination of humanist thought; it was the capital of the worldeconomy in its day. The canal ring represents an outstanding example of a built urban ensemble that required and illustrates expertise in hydraulics, civil engineering, town planning, construction and architectural knowhow. In the 17th century, it established the model for the entirely artificial ‘port city’ as well as the type of Dutch single dwelling with its variety of façades and gables. The city is testimony, at the highest level, to a significant period in the history of the modern world. The idea was that the congregation would have somewhere to meet while a permanent church arose next to it but plans for this stone church were abandoned in the 1840s. The Amstelkerk’s square-shaped interior was updated with neo-Gothic alterations, including an organ built in 1842 by J.Bätz & Co. When we look at the vast repertory of transcriptions for the bass, this logic seems to be totally absent. For example: Most sonatas from the Baroque and Rococo in our repertory are originally violin and cello sonatas by Corelli, Eccles, Vivaldi, Marcello a.o. It is doubtful that these sonatas or Bach’s Suites for solo cello will sound well when played an octave lower than the composers had in mind. Playing these works in the highest positions on the bass, sounding a whole tone higher than the original in solo tuning is questionable. From the octave (G In thumb position) we have a vibrating string length of 52,5 cm. (half of a string length of 105 cm.). The same note on the cello comes from the open G string of 69 cm. We all know that the upright piano produces notes of the same frequencies as the grand piano, but hardly anyone will prefer the sound of the shorter stringed Upright to that of the Grand Piano. It is impossible to play cello pieces at the same pitch on the bass in thumb positions with the facility and free resonance that the cello enjoys in lower positions. Most scholars are familiar with the fact that in the 17th and 18th century the approach of transposing by altering the key was common practice. Following the historic example we should play our favorite sonatas and solo suites reading tenor in stead of bass clef. The result is more satisfying; the pieces now sound only a fourth (or with solo tuning, a third) lower than the original in a more comfortable and resonant range of our instrument. 36 Why is everyone playing Rachmaninovs Vocalise opus 34 nr 14 in E minor when the original for the voice is in C sharp minor? Understandably the violin version is transposed to E minor - with only one sharp a more comfortable key. The cello followed in the same key an octave lower. But why should the bass follow the violin and cello blindly, when both do not play the piece in the original key? Given the fact that there are three versions for high, low and medium voice to be found on the internet ISMLP we can choose the version of the Vocalise for low voice in A minor that certainly does more justice to the bass. No baritone or bass singer would even think of singing Schubert’s Lieder or Fauré’s Chansons in a version for high voice. It is remarkable that bassists did not think of following the singer’s example. In most editions for the bass the word Cello is replaced by Bass, with addition of fingerings and simplifications here and there. In the mean time facimilé editions for cello and basso continuo made a drastic change in our perspective on printed versions with piano realisations of later dates. In the 17th and 18th century composers did not write out all details concerning articulation, ornamentation and dynamics. Three long notes at the end of a part of a sonata would not necessarily mean that they were played as such. The soloist was most likely expected to fill in the last bars with an improvised cadensa. Nowadays we do have enough harpsichord players reading from original scores, playing the bass line with the left hand as written and improvising on the figured bass line with the right hand, in reaction to the solo part. (basso continuo practise) Another question is what we should do with e.g. Mendelsohn’s Lied ohne Worte opus 109 when we transpose this piece from D to A minor. Do we shift all the notes down a quart? The chords in the right hand sound a bit dark, not exactly what the composer had in mind. The solution is not too difficult; the left hand goes down a quart and the chords in the right hand up a fifth, which gives space in the middle for the solo bass part. Some musicians do object that the composer had a certain tonality in mind. Does anyone object that Brahms’ violin sonata opus 78 in G major is also played in an arrangement or transposition for the cello in D major? Is the bass or baritone singer wrong to use a transposed version, when we know that Schubert conceived most of his songs in tenor version, being his own voice? Since we have music notation programs our life has become more easy; once the notes are put in the computer we can experiment and find out which version gives the best results. The combination of knowledge and skill has turned transposition and arranging into a new form of art.
