SPECIAL THANKS
Strawdog Theatre Company would like to thank the Saints for their time and talent.
D I R E C TO R N O T E
If you are reading this, a favor: if you would, please stop reading for a moment, take a
look around the room at the people you are sharing this space with tonight, and just take
a moment to breathe. Okay. Go. How rare is it that we give ourselves a moment to just be in a room with others and
breathe? Or rather, to simply be present in a moment with each other? And how much
are we missing along the way by denying, consciously or unconsciously, these moments?
The true gift of Paula Vogel’s masterful play is in its advocacy of this simple idea - that the
act of putting our own concerns aside in order to share a moment together has value.
And it is with this spirit and with great joy that I invite you to breathe with us tonight. I
sincerely hope you will. 2
Strawdog Theatre
A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R N O T E
I am sure I am not the only one guilty of picking up a few things for myself when
shopping for holiday gifts. Little things, you know: a pair of gloves, new socks, or a fortyseven piece toolset. Things that you hope for, but can’t trust you will receive, so you get
them for yourself. It’s holiday insurance. And if Aunt Gladys happens to get you a fortyseven piece tool set, you can still say, “Thank you so much, it’s just what I wanted!” That’s how I feel about this play.
This is one that I love, and really wanted, and I’m thrilled that we’re doing it, and I’m
glad we don’t have to wait to see someone else produce it. But unlike the socks, this is
something that we get to share with you. So ultimately it is our gift to you, as well. And
like any gift you give, that you love, we are excited and hope you love it like we do.
We hope that you might also say, “Thank you so much, it’s just what I wanted!” We are
honored that you are spending your holiday time with us in our home in this our final
season here on North Broadway. Where we’ll be next year at this time is hard to say, but
that’s true of everyone, now isn’t it? So my advice is that we settle in for a story together,
and enjoy the time we have, and the company that we keep.
