Dear Spinnakers,
Incredibly, we’ve just completed our 10th season; a milestone in any endeavor. Where this
program is today is the collaborative result of the characteristics that typically define
success—teamwork, discipline, commitment and hard work—characteristics that have
defined each and every roster we’ve posted since day one.
This may have been our most challenging year as well. Sometimes we are handicapped by our
successes. We have a talented pool of student/athletes, not just hockey players. Many on our
roster were part of a State Field Hockey Championship. Others are part of competitive soccer
and volleyball programs. Still others excel in the academic world, while balancing extracurricular commitments. Those talents mean we operate at less than full strength in the early
part of our season. Two wins in our first 10 games was in no way representative of your
capabilities. Through it all, you’ve represented yourselves with class. Look back with pride on
your accomplishments not in terms of wins or losses but in terms of facing challenges, earning
respect, and building character. As we’ve told alumnae before you, you’ve earned the right to
call yourselves Spinnakers.
Those graduating move to a new stage. Some of you will continue playing hockey; others may
have laced them up for the last time (excluding Spinnakers Reunions, at which we expect your
attendance!). Know that you’ve faced some of the toughest competition and, collectively, fared
extremely well. Those experiences will stay with you on and off the ice. You will always be a
Spinnaker.
Looking forward, we are returning a core roster of talented, committed players. With the
additions of new talent, we will be well-positioned to kick off the next 10 years. You have all
contributed to the ever-strengthening foundation of this program. As the 12U and 14U programs
take hold, your legacy will be one to be proud of. It has been our privilege to participate, as your
coaches, in your passage. We couldn’t be more honored.
Enjoy the summer, keep the skate blades sharp, and prepare to “set sail” on the next chapter.
