The state’s second-largest city, San Diego boasts a rich cultural history, active lifestyle and breathtaking beauty. With more than 70 miles of pristine beaches and a climate many would consider perfect, this coastal haven is unlike any other U.S. destination. In January 2008, concierge.com (part of Condè Nast) named San Diego one of the “Top 10 IT places in the world to visit in 2008.” San Diego’s diversity, friendliness, world-class resorts, fine dining, shopping and exciting nightlife contribute to the city’s reputation as a premier destination for gay and lesbian travelers. Tijuana, Rosarito and Ensenada. Outside the big city you’ll find the quaint towns of Julian, Borrego Springs and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, as well as a wide range of outdoor activities and terrain. Experiencing all that San Diego has to offer can be a daunting task. A multitude of neighborhoods exist within San Diego, including downtown’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, East Village, North Park, La Jolla and Hillcrest, the center of the thriving GLBT community. The city has boasted the county’s first openly gay district attorney, as well as several out government officials, including members of the city council. Gay and lesbian city residents enjoy laws that grant benefits to domestic partners and protect against discrimination. The epicenter of San Diego’s GLBT community is the neighborhood of Hillcrest, located just north of downtown. Visitors are greeted by the famous neon sign bearing the neighborhood’s name at Fifth and University Avenues. Once you arrive, you’ll have no question that Hillcrest is a great place to live and play. And while the neighborhood caters to the GLBT community, you will find it’s “straight friendly” too. From sidewalk cafes to outdoor bars to rainbow draped store windows, there’s no doubt you are in good company. Hillcrest has been the heart of the community since the 1970s, but a growing number of gay and lesbian bars, restaurants and shops have expanded into neighboring University Heights and North Park. Without a doubt, San Diego boasts one of the largest gay and lesbian districts in the U.S. The San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, “The Center” for short, has been supporting the GLBT community since 1973. Located in Hillcrest off University Avenue, the magnificent Centre Street building serves as the hub of the community. If you are looking for fresh and creative performances, Diversionary Theatre is one of the oldest and most respected gay and lesbian theatres in the country. Opened in 1986 and located in University Heights, Diversionary Theatre produces critically acclaimed dramas and musicals with gay, lesbian and bisexual themes and characters. For the ultimate tanning experience, head to the famous clothing-optional Black’s Beach. Located in La Jolla, it is enjoyed by both gay and straight men and women. Black’s was named one of the “10 Most Gorgeous Gay Beaches on Earth” by Out Traveler magazine. Please, don’t forget the sun block! Community news and event listings for Southern California can be found in a number of newspapers and magazines such as Buzz Magazine, the Gay and Lesbian Times and IN Magazine. Decide what type of wedding you want. Take time to figure out what suits you. Will you have a simple, small ceremony at the county clerk’s office, or do you want to create a full-blown evening of romance where you and your guests can dance the night away? 2. Get started early. Most popular San Diego wedding locations require booking a year or more in advance. 3. Create a budget and stick to it. Determine how much you want to spend and hold yourself to it. This will make it easier when you get to bigger decisions like where to stay, how many guests you are inviting – and which ones you are paying for, location of the wedding, food, photography, etc. You’ll also have the peace of mind to simply enjoy your day. 4. After doing your research, create a wedding checklist. Some items you’ll definitely want to include are: • Caterer, baker • Hotels • Marriage license . • Photographer • Tuxedos, dresses, etc. • Securing an officiant (i.e. a person legally qualified to perform the wedding in CA) • Transportation between ceremony, reception and hotel (for you and your guests) Visit SANDIEGO.ORG for more information 888-988-8481 innlajolla.com The Keating Hotel 432 F St. 619-814-5700 thekeating.com The US Grant San Diego 326 Broadway 866-716-8149 usgrant.net FLORISTS Dream Florist 3828 Fifth Ave. 619-543-9210 dreamflorist.net LIMO SERVICES Luxury Limousine 11270 Cleveland Ave. #0-118 858-692-2776 luxurylimousine@hotmail.com CRUISES Hornblower Cruises 1066 N.
