Dear Friends, October 2004 The President of Young Life, Denny Rydberg, joined 48 golfers at this years’ “Young Life Golf Deal”. What I like about our Golf Deal is that it is not just another golf tournament. It is unique. It is all about the kids, because all the proceeds go into a student campership fund. Thirteen captains invited guests. A round of golf at the Saucon Valley Country Club followed lunch at Mac & Becky Briggs. For many that was only the beginning as another twenty guests arrived at our hosts’ home to enjoy a wonderful dinner and evening with friends. Dinner was accentuated with a Scottish flair, as bagpipes bellowed outside. Names from the teams with the lowest net and lowest scramble score were added to our trophy. Liberty High School Student After dinner Evan Griffin, a high school sophomore, told about his experiences at camp. Mac introduced Denny who shared about the history and mission of Young Life. I had the privilege to share my excitement about the newest ministry opportunity that God has opened at Whitehall High School. Students at Whitehall were anxious to sign up when they were told they could attend our camp trip to Lake Champion at half price. Why? Jesus, the Son of God, gave up His riches for all. Jesus had been invited to a dinner at Simon the leper’s home. While the dinner guests reclined at the table, a woman with an alabaster flask approached Jesus. She broke the flask of very costly ointment of pure nard, and poured it over His head. “Some said to themselves indignantly, ‘Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii’s and given to the poor.’ And they scolded her. But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone…She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her’.” They were indignant at her devotion to Jesus. She had experienced His grace and mercy, and therefore gave everything to Him. She saw something about Him that even the disciples did not. Her lavish gesture, recorded in three Gospels, has been remembered throughout history. Ironically, she did give to the poor…“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich”. Her act memorialized the true response to Him. Similarly, friends graciously underwrote the entire ‘Golf Deal’ day; so that $20,000 goes directly to helping make camp available for every kid. The investment of friends and golfers extend the ministry opportunity of our volunteer and student leaders. Throughout the school year kids hear about Jesus every week at Club and then for an extended time at camp. When they respond to Him, they receive true riches. That’s Young Life. Thank you for your gracious support of this mission to Lehigh Valley students. Sincerely, Eric Johnson P.O. Box 1421 • Bethlehem, PA 18016 • 610-691-3007 • ericjohnson@dotwebusa.com
