A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
MANUFACTURING &
CONSTRUCTION
&
CONSTRUCTION
Performance. Utilities want a rope that is durable and long lasting, that knots easily and performs
well in friction hitches or mechanical devices. They want ropes with a proven record of safety and
reliability. And they want any rope tool they use to be backed by a company with an unquestioned
reputation for engineering, quality, and dependability.
> It Comes Down To Choices
Performance and dependability come down to the choices in
fiber and construction we make and the products we make
available. Rope design and engineering begins with a needs
assessment for the end user. Factors such as splicing ability,
knot-holding properties, weight, stretch, and durability determine the type of rope or construction we choose. Some types
of rope are better suited than others for specific performance
criteria or applications. For instance, 3-strand ropes tend to be
more abrasion resistant and offer higher energy absorption than
other types of rope. As a result, we might consider a 3-strand
rope for applications where these are important design criteria.
The exhibit below compares the five main rope types: 3-strand,
single braid, double braid, kernmantle, and parallel core.
3-STRAND
A special stabilization process and a fourstage, balanced construction produce a
durable, long-lasting, flexible, and easy-tohandle rope. Ideal for use in safety lanyards,
fall protection, or any application where grip,
abrasion resistance, and stretch are critical
factors. Our 3-Strand Safety Blue, 3-Strand
Safety Blue Hi-Vee, Filament Nylon, Multiline II, 3-Strand Polyester, and many of our
factory-spliced lanyards and fliplines utilize
this four-stage, 3-strand construction.
3
> Types Of Fibers
Fiber is one of the building blocks of any line. We feel that it is
important for a user who expects certain performance to have a
basic understanding of the characteristics of the fibers used in
the modern manufacture of rope.
Nylon: Good strength and high stretch. Used in climbing ropes
to absorb shock resulting from falls. Nylon melts at 460°F with
progressive strength loss above 300°F.
Polyester: Situations where strength, low stretch, and durability
are key. For this reason, polyester is used in most utility ropes.
Polyester melts at 480°F with progressive strength loss above
300°F.
SINGLE BRAID
A flexible and supple construction that
absorbs twist and is less likely to kink. The
12-strand single braid construction is nonrotational, and easily spliced. It is ideally
suited for wire replacement and where weight
is a primary design consideration.
DOUBLE BRAID
A braided core inside a braided cover produces an easy-to-handle rope that is strong,
round, and very durable. Double braids are
easy to splice and lend themselves to a wide
variety of uses. This rope construction is
commonly used as a jacket over a high tech
(i.e. HMPE core - Endura Braid).
HMPE: High Modulus Polythylene sold under brand names
Dyneema® or Spectra®, also known as UHMWPE ultra-high
molecular weight polyethelene are very lightweight and extremely strong. HMPE melts at 300°F with progressive strength
loss above 176°F - 212°F.
Aramids: refer to Kevlar®, Technora®, and Twaron®. Strong
with very low stretch and low creep. Extreme temperature
capability of up to 800º.
LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer): refers to Vectran®. Very
strong, extremely low stretch, and zero creep. Vectran® breaks
down at 660°F with progressive strength loss above 430°F.
Polypropylene: Applications where lighter weight or very low
cost is important. Polypropylene is often used under a layer
of polyester where it is protected from UV rays and abrasion.
Polypropylene melts at 330°F with progressive strength loss
above 200°F.
At New England Ropes we select only the highest quality fiber
from leading worldwide suppliers. As an ISO 9001 accredited manufacturer, we are committed to employing all of our
resources to maintain our position as one of the leading innovators in rope performance and technology.
> What You Should Know About Construction
Most people recognize 3-strand, single braid, and double
braid as the basic methods of twisting or braiding fibers into
a finished line.
The challenge is to blend the fiber’s characteristics with our
years of design and manufacturing experience into finished
products that perform to your exacting standards.
Predictability and control of strength, stretch, and durability are the ultimate goals in rope performance for all utilities.
While our choice of materials, construction techniques, and
years of experience make us the leader in Rope Technology,
it’s our commitment to innovation, high standards, and the
best performance that set New England Ropes apart.
> How Does New England Ropes Define Performance?
Our ropes must meet your needs and live up to the standards
you set for us. When we do that – and help you get your job
done easier, faster, and safer – that’s performance.

Load
KERNMANTLE (static and semi-static)
A braided jacket over bundles of twisted
fibers. This construction is perfect for static,
semi-static or dynamic ropes that must
remain firm yet run freely through mechanical
devices. In addition, the spring-like fiber
bundles absorb energies generated by a fall.
A kernmantle construction is utilized in KM III,
KM III Max, Braided Safety Blue, and Braided
Safety Blue Hi-Vee, as well as our Nylon
Accessory Core.
PARALEL CORE
Composed of a braided jacket over axial aliigned

strength and lowest stretch. With a tighet firm
jacket forming an extremely durable low stretch
line, this construction is used in our PCRU pulling line.

ROPE CARE & USAGE
Rope Care. We take great care in manufacturing the highest-quality rope. A few guidelines
about its use will help you increase the life of the rope and assist you in achieving the best
performance using our products.
>
Abrasion and Sharp Edges
Abrasion and sharp edges are a rope’s worst enemies. Check all
equipment prior to use to make sure there are no burrs or sharp
edges. Always inspect ropes after climbing in abrasive environments
to assess damage from wear.
