Wright's passion for Japanese architecture was strongly reflected in the design of Fallingwater, particularly in the importance of interpenetrating exterior and interior spaces and the strong emphasis placed on harmony between man and nature. Contemporary Japanese architect Tadao Ando has stated: "I think Wright learned the most important aspect of architecture, the treatment of space, from Japanese architecture. After boot camp at Bainbridge MD. (monthly pay was about $57.00) My first two years in the Navy where spent at the 5th Naval District Headquarters Norfolk Virginia. I was assigned to (PAMI) Personnel Accounting Machine Installation, IBM machines (punch card, verifiers, sorters) my duty was office clerk. The duty was extremely hard! I was there 5 days a week, with NO other duties. I had every evening and week-end off, but I did have to walk about a block away (to stand in the chow line for lunch), which was right next door to the barracks. The barracks was two wings and two stories high, probably 200 sailors to each wing with only one television for recreation (ruff life). I had my car on base and drove home just about ever week-end to Pennsylvania. I always had a car load of other sailors on their way home for the week-end; I think I charged them $15.00 round trip. We would take the ferry from Norfolk to Newport News then up to Richmond, Washington, than Williamsport PA, approximately 406 miles or 10 – 12 hour drive. Somewhere around June 1st 1954, I reported to USS Intrepid for my new duty station. I was just a Seaman. All I can remember was that they were looking for someone that could type. That’s how I got assigned to X Division, My first job was typing June 18, 1954 on the receiving record of each new crew member. The USS Intrepid was in dry dock for the first month or so in Newport News and the only thing that I can remember was the steam catapults (very first ones were installed on the Intrepid) had to be tested. After Newport News we headed for our shake down cruise Guantanamo Cuba. Returning to Norfolk, then to the Mediterranean for 6 months. We stopped at Florida to pick up our Air Groups, then 10 days or so to Gibraltar, then on to Naples, Barcelona, Greece, Turkey and other places. I did this trip twice while I was aboard. On the second trip myself and 90 others were being discharged and were send home to Norfolk aboard a smaller carrier and I got very sea sick I don’t remember seeing or eating anything all the time I was aboard. We had to spend several days in the receiving station in Norfolk before being discharged. When I went aboard the USS Intrepid I was a Seaman, one year and half later I was a PN2, (Second Class Personnel man). There was one other Second Class, one Third Class, and three Seaman working in the Personnel Office. Next door where our bosses: Chief Warrant, one Lieutenant, and a JG. The other 2 nd Class was from the Philippines, the 3rd was from Ohio, one Seaman (USNR) was from Spartanburg South Carolina, and William Corel from Roanoke Virginia, and one from Massachusetts. Working in the Personnel Office was not difficult duty, no watches to stand, most of the time no chow lines (had passes). I had to stand duty once during a war game, from 4 AM to 6 AM on the bridge. Of course during General Quarters I had an assigned station, remember the gong, gong, gong, General Quarters; General Quarters all hands mann your battle stations. Respectively submitted Robert L Rice 1790 Fredna Ave Williamsport PA 17701
