The holiday season is typically when our
community gives to Home of the Innocents
more than any other season of the year. It is
a “make or break” time of year for the Home.
By the middle
of December,
we were getting
nervous. We
were short
$300,000 that we
knew we needed
to get us through.
You heard our plea
and responded with a
generous gift.
Thank you for the faith
you have in the Home and
for your desire to help us
with our mission of caring
for children facing crisis.
Thank you for helping us
to meet the needs of those
children!
In 2012, we served 1,600 more children than
we served in 2011 - a 70% increase. As we
shift into 2013, we anticipate that there will
be another increase in children and families
knocking on our door, especially those
seeking good medical, dental and behavioral
health treatment services. Your generous
support strengthens us and enables us to
continue to say “yes” to the children who
need us. Once again, thank you from the
bottom of our heart.

Keepsafe for Indiana families and
Intensive Family Preservation,
Reunification and Placement

Cheer
Santa Comes to Town
Santa Claus arrived early this year
at the Home of the Innocents. As
in years past, he got a special escort
from Louisville firefighters, who
hosted their annual holiday party for
the kids at the Home. The Louisville
Fire Department has been collecting
donations all year to pay for the
holiday party. The donations help
to pay for Christmas presents, a disc
jockey, a magician and lunch for all
the kids and the Home’s staff.

William and Lucy Frank were pastoring a
local Episcopal church in Kentucky in 1953.
They received word that a baby girl was
available for adoption through the Home.
Naming her Lucy, the couple adopted the
child, and she became their daughter.

Lucy Daoust (formerly Lucy Frank) sent
us this kind letter along with her holiday
donation 60 years after the adoption of her
child from the Home. A long time supporter
of the Home’s work, Lucy’s words of thanks
and gratitude inspire the Home’s staff to

The Louisville Fire Department
hosts the longest running holiday
party in Home of the Innocents’
history. In addition to the holiday
party, Louisville firefighers also
support the children who reside in
the Home’s Kosair Charities Pediatric
Convalescent Center in their annual
Walk & Wheel event. This year
marks the third year the Louisville
Firefighters will help some of our
medically fragile kids complete a small
portion of Kentucky Derby Marathon
on April 27, 2013. For more

Growing Services to Meet the Needs of
Children & Families in So. Indiana, Cont.
Outpatient Therapy
Mental health counseling services are available to children,
adolescents and adults. Services are designed to prevent child abuse,
to stop children from entering out-of-home care, and to help
improve family functioning. We are currently accepting: Indiana
Medicaid, Anthem insurance and Humana insurance. For more

Parents Acquiring Skills & Strength (PASS)
PASS classes are based in the Nurturing Parenting Program.
Nurturing Parenting is the practice of promoting the positive
overall growth of children. It’s a proven, powerful approach to help
children and adults learn to care for themselves, others and their
environment. Classes address common parenting issues and
provide useful tools to assist with parenting struggles. For more

Toyland
Christmas
For the 8th year in a row, Louis
and Donna Kinnaird lit the way
for Santa and his reindeer by
transforming their home into an
outdoor concert of holiday lights
and music. With over 80,000
brightly colored lights meticulously
choreographed to holiday favorites,
children of all ages were awed by this
magical display of sights and sounds.
Autism Services
The Home’s Autism Program has become our region’s leading
provider of services for children with autism. The program uses
Applied Behavioral Analysis, an evidence-based therapy with
proven effectiveness in treating Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Expert staff create individualized treatment plans to address the
unique needs of each child. For more information, please contact

Therapeutic Loving foster Care
Foster homes for children of all ages are needed throughout
Southern Indiana. Therapeutic Loving foster Care (TLC) is our
family-based alternative to institutional treatment for children
with serious emotional and behavioral conditions. TLC focuses on
creating “forever families” through adoption. Our crisis care
professionals also provide a number of specialized programs to
meet the needs of children and their families. For more information,

Kinnaird family raised over $11,000
this year, and they have contributed
more than $51,000 since they began
eight years ago. Thank you, Louis

Project Keepsafe
Project Keepsafe provides single parents in need of treatment for
drug and/or alcohol addiction, mental illness, and/or physical
illness the opportunity to voluntarily place their children in
residential care at the Home. This enables the parent to receive
the treatment they desperately need to save their family while
alleviating the parent’s concerns for the safety and well-being of

Homebuilders
Homebuilders offers intensive short-term, in-home therapy and
related services to help stabilize and enhance family functioning so
children can be safely maintained in the home or reunited with
their families. Therapists provide a wide range of services,
including helping clients meet the basic needs of food, clothing,

Prevention Month
Pick a Pinwheel
for Prevention
April is Child Abuse Prevention
month. In partnership with Prevent
Child Abuse Kentucky, Home of the
Innocents recognizes this month
each year as an opportunity to raise
awareness of the tragedies of child
abuse and neglect, as well as an
opportunity to celebrate families.
Now, more than ever, it is essential that
we all work together to accomplish
our mission of protecting our region’s
children.
The blue and silver
pinwheel symbol
is used nationwide
to raise awareness
about child abuse
and neglect
prevention. It
was chosen to
represent imagery
of hope and
promise. When
individuals take
part in a pinwheel campaign, they are
making the statement that every child
deserves to be raised in a healthy, safe
and nurturing environment.
Throughout the month of April,
the Home will showcase multiple
pinwheel gardens on its campus.
The community is invited to ‘pick a
pinwheel’ from the garden to show
support for the prevention of child
abuse and neglect. Please join us
in picking a pinwheel to show your
support for child abuse prevention.

The Home Welcomes New Dentist - Dr. Brent Hurst
Home of the Innocents is very happy to
welcome Dr. Brent Hurst as one of the newest
members of its Open Arms Children’s Health
dental team. Dr. Hurst was born in Louisville,
Kentucky. He attended

University of Louisville.

The Kay and Jim Morrissey Advanced
Therapy Center’s 92˚ therapy pool staff at
Home of the Innocents invite you to join
them for aquatic classes and swim lessons!
A therapy pool permission form (signed by
your MD, Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s
Assistant) and liability release are required

Held year-round, five private 30 minute

child’s needs. Our teaching method is
gentle, user-centered, fun and progressive,
starting with water confidence exercises,

offering private swim
lessons to children with autism. The
salt water pool is an ideal, relaxing and
therapeutic environment for children to
grow comfortable in the water, featuring
92˚ water, warm air temperature,
multi-colored lights, echo-reducing tiles
and underwater speakers for music.
Our teaching method is gentle, usercentered, fun and progressive, starting
with water confidence exercises, and
if appropriate, moving towards face
down swimming. Eight (8) 30 minute
lessons are $180. Lessons are held once a
week, and progress reports are provided.
Partial scholarships may be available
through FEAT of Louisville based on

Dorothy Ann Barnes
1925 - 2012
Dorothy Barnes, a long-time volunteer
and friend to the Home, passed away
on October 31, 2012. She began
volunteering with Home of the
Innocents in the fall of 1986. Dorothy
was honored as the Home of the
Innocents’ “Volunteer of the Year”
in 1992. She was also the recipient
of the WLKY Bell Award, a very
distinguished award in our community.
Dorothy began volunteering at
our Gray Street location with the
“Green Unit” (later known as the
Hockensmith Cottage.) She then
decided to volunteer in a role in which
she could apply her administrative
skills. Working in the development
department and later the volunteer
department, she was extremely
dedicated, loyal and committed to
Home of the Innocents. Dorothy was
definitely a one-of-a-kind volunteer
and will be greatly missed.
In addition to volunteering with the
Home, Dorothy also volunteered at
Brooklawn for a number of years and
with her church, Emmanuel United
Church of Christ. She was very
involved with the refugee program
at her church; she was a mentor
to the young girls and provided
transportation services to the refugee
families.
Dorothy’s absence at the Home each
week has left an emotional void;
however, her spirit and legacy of
volunteer work and service will live on
and will always be remembered.

event featured an entrance by

firetruck
from the
Okolona
Fire
Department, as well as free
hot chocolate, coffee, cookies,
clowns and face-painting.
Attendees were encouraged to
bring a financial donation, toys,
clothing or personal items. This
year’s event drew hundreds of
community members and raised
over $1,000. Over the last ten
years, the event has raised over
$10,000 for the Home. Thanks,

Derby Fashion Show
Our friends at Omagi Salon,
founders of “Beauty for a Benefit”,
will be hosting the Derby Fashion
Festival on Sunday, April 14th
at The Summit of Louisville.
The event will include a runway
fashion show featuring local
designers, artists, and jewelers.
The Festival will also include
a cocktail hour with live and
silent auction; sit-down dinner,
vendors, music and more.
Proceeds from this event will
benefit Home of the Innocents.

April 27th
at the
Kentucky
Derby Marathon as our kids in the Kosair
Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center
(KCPCC) walk and wheel their way to
the finish line. This year marks the third
year the Louisville Firefighters have
helped some of our medically fragile kids
complete a small portion of Kentucky
Derby Marathon.
Since the children are all wheelchair
dependent, each KCPCC resident is only
able to complete a small portion of the
marathon. The firefighters, along with
Home of the Innocents’ staff members,
will push a child though his or her portion
of the race.
The public is invited to come out and
walk, wheel or run to support the Home
of the Innocents’ Walk and Wheel Team.
If you want to support our kids but aren’t
a walker, runner or wheeler, don’t despair!
There are other ways you can support the
cause. You can make a donation, sign up
as a contributor, or get your friends and
family to donate in your name.

A Snapshot
The Home provides programs and services
for these children and young adults in crisis:
•Medically fragile and terminally ill children
who require 24-hour-a-day skilled
nursing care.
•Those who require emergency care due
to abuse, abandonment, neglect or
homelessness; or who need foster care.
•Homeless, pregnant, or parenting teens,
and their family members needing case
management, education, parenting, and
independent living skills.
•Children with autism and special needs.
•Young adults who are homeless or at risk of
homelessness, are in crisis due to mental
health or abuse, and families who are
struggling to maintain their children in
their homes to provide stability and skills
for self sufficiency.
