Nieuw elan in het Academiegebouw
Het Academiegebouw, een rijksmonument, is zeer gevarieerd in detaillering en
materiaalgebruik, maar laat zich tegelijkertijd ervaren als een eenheid. In de loop
der jaren zijn er echter aanpassingen aan
het gebouw gedaan die voornamelijk
pragmatisch van aard waren waardoor
met name het interieur van het gebouw
aan allure heeft ingeboet. De opgave
voor de opwaardering van het Academiegebouw betreft zowel de realisatie van
een uitbreiding als een programmatische
reorganisatie, waarbij vooral de plekken
die eerder zijn aangepast van een nieuw
elan moeten worden voorzien.

De inzet van het ontwerp is het tot stand
brengen van een ruimtelijk harmonische verbinding tussen het oude en het
nieuwe, ondersteund door het materiaalgebruik en de detaillering. Daarbij geldt
het bestaande gebouw als uitgangspunt
en waarborger van de onderlinge samenhang. Het consequente materiaalgebruik
in de uitvoering van de vloerafwerking en
de vaste interieurelementen (respectievelijk bewerkt natuursteen en geëmailleerd glas) en de toepassing van stucwerk
zorgen voor eenheid en harmonie in
het ervaren van het gebouw. Ruimtelijke
kenmerken zoals lichtinval en afmetingen
vormden het uitganspunt voor het verlenen van een specifieke identiteit aan plekken zoals de bistro, de diner en de serre.
Een eigen materiaal- en kleuruitvoering
en meubilairstijl benadrukken het karakter
en het gebruik van deze plekken.

Nature of the assignment
The University Academy Building, a listed
building, is varied in its detailing and material use but is nevertheless perceived as
a harmonious unit. In the course of time,
however, adjustments have been made to
the building that were primarily pragmatic
in their nature and were implemented
within a limited budget. As a consequence, the building has lost some of its original allure. A programmatic reorganization
formed the impulse for the upgrade and
realization of an extension to the
Academy Building. In this renovation, a
new élan has been accorded to those
places in particular that were previously
subject to radical alteration.
The University Academy Building
Approach
The programmatic requirements, the status as a listed building, the requirements
of the technical services, the fire-safety
demands, restrictions as a result of previous adjustments, and construction limitations ensured a design challenge that
could be described as a precise surgical
intervention. The aim of the design was to
generate a spatially harmonious connection between old and new, underpinned
by the material use and detailing.
The new layout, the incidence of daylight,
the use of sightlines and the reorganized
space can now be experienced as an
intriguing continuity within which different
places with diverse ambiences and
characters manifest themselves. In the
design, the existing building formed the
starting point and the guarantee of mutual coherence. The challenge was, first of
all, to generate a form and design
language that is robust, modern and
individual while simultaneously possessing
the same timeless stateliness of the existing building. Second, it was important to
maintain the existing wealth of materials
and details without losing sight of the
uniformity of the total picture.

Implementation
The canteen is situated at a central spot in
the former basement of the building. The
restaurant and distribution point are surrounded by three open spaces, each with
its own individual character: the bistro, the
conservatory and the diner. The bistro has
an intimate bar-like atmosphere, with brown
tints, dimmed lights, and high stools and
tables. The conservatory is equipped with
elegantly slim, white furniture and makes
optimum use of the incidence of daylight
and the relation with the adjoining inner
garden. The diner has the ambience of a
stylized American restaurant with bright red
furniture, floral wallpaper and red panelling.
A connection with the Bruinszaal (Bruins
Hall) and the Spiegelzaal (Mirror Hall) on
the first floor is established by means of
two stairways. There is a connecting space
between the two halls that is equipped with
a bar and distribution points.
Whereas few interventions have been made
in the Spiegelzaal – with the exception of
the distribution point – the Bruinszaal has
been comprehensively renovated. The walls
of the original rear façade of the building
were irreparably damaged during the construction of the Bruinszaal. To cover this, the
hall has been laid out with high panelling of
padded white leather. A present-day interpretation of the classical cassette ceiling is
freely suspended between the walls of the
original building and is covered with glass.
Next to the Bruinszaal there is a lounge area
with low easychairs and a coffee corner.
