Mistresses and Consorts Picture Book No. 1, November 2014 Message to the Mistresses and Consorts of the Masters of the Livery Companies As your new Lady Mayoress, I am delighted to be invited to write the introduction to the first printed edition of the Mistresses Picture Book, which was started online in June 2014. It was introduced with the aim of helping to put faces to the names of the Mistresses and Consorts in the City of London’s 110 Livery Companies when you meet each other events during the year and by doing so, to create a warm community, whose heart is in charitable giving. I am looking forward to the year ahead Photo: Clive Totman and in particular, to helping support The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, which aims to fund muchneeded services and raise awareness of important issues for disabled people and their families. As you may know, this year’s Appeal will help Scope and Mencap to develop two flagship programmes. While we are all aware of the splendid ceremonial occasions that take place in the City, it is the continuous commitment to helping build a better world for London’s citizens that has always been the hallmark of London’s livery companies. Dick Whittington, himself, a Mercer, embodied this commitment and even now, it provides a line which thrives in the livery companies, in their different charitable approaches and focuses. However, the reach of the livery companies goes beyond the confines of London to many regions where support is given to trades, education and professions. I very much look forward to meeting all the Mistresses and Consorts, and I wish you a very enjoyable year. With warm wishes Gilly Yarrow Gilly Yarrow, Lady Mayoress Lady Mayoress Gilly Yarrow Aldermanic Sheriff’s Consort Wendy Parmley Non Aldermanic Sheriff’s Consort David Moss Welcome to the 1st edition of Mistresses Picture Book The Mistresses Picture Book was initiated by The Lady Ribeiro of the Barbers Company, who had noticed that her husband (Master 2013-14) made a point of always carrying a copy of the Masters’ Picture Book with him. She thought such a book would be equally useful to Mistresses, and we were joined by Suzan Woods, then Mistress Fueller to make it all happen. We have seized this opportunity to make a printed edition, and to distribute it to the Mistress or Consort of every Livery Company. If your picture appears in this booklet, thank you for your support. If you meet Mistresses of other companies who are not yet in the booklet, please encourage them to join – and, when your year is nearing its end, please ask your successor to send in their picture and subscription well in advance of the changeover date – that way, there will be no awkward gap, and it will save us quite a lot of chasing. If your picture does not appear in the booklet, we hope you will want to join. Because we do not (yet) have a sponsor for this project, we ask for a subscription of £10 from each Mistress. To join, just send your photo by Email to info@liverycomapnies.com and send your cheque made out to P. Nicholson, 9 Lynwood Avenue, Epsom, KT17 4LQ. Your picture will appear on the liverycompanies.com website within a few days, and it will also be in the next edition of the Mistresses Picture Book which will be distributed at the Ironbridge weekend in June. The project is run by a steering committee which, in addition to those listed above, includes Sarah Miles, Mistress Actuary, and Mary Jane Donaldson, Mistress Basketmaker. If you would be interested in helping us, please send me an email at info@liverycompanies.com With best wishes Piers Nicholson Piers Nicholson, webmaster, liverycompanies.com And Deputy Master, Tylers and Bricklayers Company No consort appointed Actuaries 91 Air Pilots 81 Sarah Miles Armourers and Brasiers 22 Lesley Archer Basketmakers Apothecaries 58 Victoria Moore-Gillon Arts Scholars 110 Lyn Luder 52 Mary Jane Donaldson Blacksmiths 40 Lara Shepherd Bakers 93 Diana Uff 19 Jenny Bentley Bowyers Arbitrators Barbers 17 Lady Vickers (Jo) 38 (C) Veronica Cooper Brewers 14 Carolyn Arkell No consort appointed Broderers 48 Victoria Toler Builders Merchants 88 (C) Dave Moore Butchers 24 Carmen 77 Clare Anstey No consort appointed Carpenters Margaret Felton 26 Chartered Accountants 86 Annie Illingworth Chartered Architects 98 Ann Purves Chartered Secretaries 87 Chartered Surveyors 85 Fiona Chase Clockmakers 61 (C) Steve Whittingham Clothworkers 12 Susan Howell Coachmakers 72 Clair Smith No consort appointed Constructors 35 Cooks 99 Curriers (C) Anne Mannix Dyers Coopers 36 Moira Frood (C) Stephen Lawrence 29 18 Cutlers Rosemary Herbert 13 Educators Elaine Crockatt Distillers 109 Engineers 27 Nolan Shaw 69 Jenny Raines Fiona Williams Cordwainers Drapers 3 Nicky Bence-Trower 94 Environmental Cleaners 97 Therese Tahhan Margaret Baxter No consort appointed Fan Makers Sonja Clasby Farmers 76 80 Farriers Marisa Upton October Baroness (Hazel) Byford 55 Feltmakers Cathy Hutton 63 No consort appointed Firefighters 103 Lynn Spearman Fishmongers 4 Fletchers 39 Founders 33 Jacqueline Draycott Caroline Fforde No consort appointed Framework Knitters 64 Fruiterers 45 Fuellers 95 Joy Chamberlain (C) David Bentata Furniture Makers 83 Lotta von der Heyde No consort appointed Gardeners 66 Jenny Bernhard Girdlers 23 Glass Sellers 71 Glaziers 53 Wendy Parmley Sophia Neill November John Dallimore No consort appointed Glovers Gunmakers Jacqueline Jackman 62 73 Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers 74 Merrill Hope Haberdashers Joanna Bates 8 Goldsmiths 5 Alison Parente Hackney Carriage Drivers104 Anika Paice Grocers 2 Irene Roundall Horners Celia Bunyer 54 No consort appointed Information Technologists 100 Innholders 32 Ironmongers 10 Lightmongers 96 Dr Stephanie Wright Marketors 90 Joanne Harrison Merchant Taylors Tessa Watkins Joiners & Ceilers 41 Gwendoline Woods Debbie Carter-Clout Loriners 57 Musicians Lady Cleaver (Jennie) Launderers 30 89 Needlemakers Angie Lewis 15 Management Consultants 105 Ann Chapman 78 Mercers 1 (C) Richard Walker-Arnott Maureen Judah 50 Leathersellers Janie Watson Makers of Playing Cards 75 Master Mariners International Bankers 106 (C) David Bill Maureen Carter Hazel Morrow 7 92 Susan Shonfield Ann Beaumont Masons Insurers Claire Dickinson Anne Groom 65 Painter-Stainers Elaine Goodman 28 Parish Clerks 10 Plaisterers Pattenmakers Alexandra Hayward Felicity Cooper 46 Heather Jones Plumbers 70 Paviors 56 Rosalind Kempner 31 Jane Hodkinson Poulters Pewterers 16 Victoria Furber 34 Saddlers 25 Marilyn Farmar Vicky Bassett Cross No consort appointed Salters 9 Hon Victoria Russell Shipwrights Vlaerie Locks Scriveners 44 Gillian Lovegrove 59 The Lady Clarke (Rosemary) Stationers and Newspaper Makers Scientific Instrument Makers 84 47 Skinners 6 Stephanie Hitchens Tallow Chandlers Jennifer McIntyre Solicitors Pauline Stewart 79 Tax Advisers Caroline Godbee Spectacle Makers 60 (C) Eur Ing Simon Bartley Amanda Keaveny 21 Security Professionals 108 107 Tin Plate Workers Stacey-Louise Balcombe 67 No consort appointed TobaccoPipeMakersandTobaccoBlenders 82 Dr Pauline Kane Turners 51 Tylers and Bricklayers 37 Upholders 49 Teresa Thornton Lindy Bridgeman No consort appointed Vintners 11 Joanne Clevely Weavers Susan Martineau Water Conservators 102 Christine North 42 Wheelwrights 68 (PW) = Prime Warden Liz Wooton Wax Chandlers 20 World Traders 101 Irene Randall Kevin Thomas City Livery Club Watermen & Lightermen 1 Woolmen Carolyn Excell 43 Mary Hardy (UB) = Upper Bailiff Guild of Freemen Patricia Smail We have taken as much care as was possible in the very limited time scale to prepare this leaflet; we apologise for any errors and would appreciate your notifying us at info@liverycompanies.com with a heading “Correction needed to ............
