MONSOON SAFETY:
KEEP YOUR AIRPLANE PROTECTED AND SAFE!
While the first month of our annual Summer
Monsoon has been pretty tame, large storms
are possible from now through mid-September.
Obvious hazards include hail, lightning, and
high winds, but rain, dust and debris may also
damage your aircraft. Here are a few things to
check & do to keep you and your aircraft safe:
Make sure tie-down chains are serviceable & secure when leaving your aircraft.
When tying down your aircraft, be sure any slack in the chains will not allow the aircraft to
move enough to contact anything (covered tie-down supports, storage boxes, etc.).
Be sure to close all windows & vents. Wing root vents on Cessna aircraft can admit a
serious amount of carpet-spoiling rain & harmful clouds of dust.
Consider a pitot tube cover. Dirt & dust can clog the system causing a failure.
Install gust locks if so equipped. If not, and the POH allows for it, use your seatbelt to
secure the controls.
Hangar your aircraft if hail is possible. Most FBOs offer nightly hangar rates. This could
be a safe haven for aircraft normally parked outside. However, don’t wait until the storm
is on top of the airport to request this -- FBOs secure their hangars before storms arrive.

SUPPORTS ANGEL FLIGHT
Angel Flight West is a nonprofit, volunteerdriven organization that arranges free,
non-emergency air travel for children and
adults with serious medical conditions and
other compelling needs. Their network of
1,900 pilots throughout the West donate
their aircraft, piloting skills, & all flying
costs to help families in need, enabling
them to receive vital treatment that
might otherwise be inaccessible because
of financial, medical, or geographic
limitations.
On Monday, July 27, Todd Underwood
of Angel Flight West presented Cutter
Aviation DVT with a Certificate of
Appreciation. Todd expressed their
appreciation and gratitude to the Cutter
Team at DVT for our continuing support of
the Angel Flight Mission.

“Police” your area. Be sure that there are no loose objects around your aircraft that may
become missiles that will damage your (or someone else’s) aircraft. Examples include: drip
pans, storage boxes, ladders, trash cans, plastic owls, etc.
For those owners with hangars, please be sure your hangar is secure. Secure the main &
utility doors and turn off and unplug any electric devices.
Aircraft fueling is discontinued when lightning is in the vicinity of the airport. This may or
may not be accompanied by the airport’s lightning detection system alarm.
