PRESIDENTIAL POSTING
June 2016
We are rolling through the year now. We have a few cool events coming up in the next couple of months. The first event I want to highlight is Marc and Marcia Smith’s Wine Run on
June 25th. This will be a new run for the club and it looks like a fun one.
On that note, I want to give a special thanks to all the new members like Marc and Marcia
Smith, Paul and Barbara Lazor, and Paul and Joyce Echols. They don’t let the fact that they
are new members stop them from stepping up and helping out.
The other event coming up is the club’s birthday party on July 16th. Remember we won’t
have a regular monthly meeting in July as we will be celebrating the club’s 59th birthday. You
want to make sure you can attend this event. We will have BBQ, drinks, cake and games. If
you went to the birthday party last year you know how awesome it was so don’t miss this
one!
We still have the scholarship open and accepting applications. Make sure you get the application turned in before August 30th. It is always nice to have a little extra cash to put towards school books or supplies.

Hello,
I don’t have much to say this month! I have missed a couple of ‘vette runs due to an extremely busy time for our family; our son graduates from high school in 2 weeks!! I understand though that the runs were really good and that we have a new one coming up this
month. Check the calendar and I hope to see you soon.
It may seem early but the plans for this year’s Christmas party are well underway. We will be
at Walding Station & Company in League City on December 17th 2016 so put it on your calendar NOW. Here is the link to check it out.

Let’s get out and beat the bushes. Do you know how many Corvettes (new and used) are
sold in the greater Houston area each month? Neither do I, but it has to be an impressive
number, right? Let’s go find all those happy Corvette owners. We’ve got Club business
cards you can hand out or slip under a windshield wiper.

Can your Corvette come out and play with us?
NOW IS THE TIME!
For you to host that event you have been dreaming up and thinking about doing for so long. We all love
participating in the club events! They are what make our club so much fun, but they do not materialize
out of thin air all by themselves. It takes members like you and me to bring them to life. So stop procrastinating, get off your butt and get going. Remember I am here to help you with the details if you need, so
drop me an email, give me a call or visit me at the activities table during the monthly meetings and let’s
get the ball rolling.

Here are a few suggestions for possible SJCC events. Several of these ideas have been successful runs in
the past and just need an eager member to grab hold and breathe life into them once again, others are
new ideas that have never been done before. Don’t be shy, give it a try! Feel free to pick one or two

Hosting or Chairing your own SJCC event is very rewarding in several ways!
First off, it can be a lot of fun laying out and planning your event. Then there is that really cool feeling you
get when you look in the rear view mirror and see 20 or 30 corvettes behind you and realize they’re all following you – You’re the Leader of the Pack. Of course the smiling faces, pats on the back, and statements
like “Nice Run” or “That was Fun” or “We’ll have to do that event again” from fellow club members at the
end of your event will have you beaming with pride and satisfaction. And lastly there are the Club Participation Points, this is the SJCC’s way of saying Thank You for your time and effort in keeping our club fun and
active.
This month I am posting the 2016 SJCC Points Trail in the next few pages so you can see where you sit in
the points race so far this year. I’ll post the points trail periodically throughout the year so you can keep
track of your position. Remember the top 10% point holders at the end of the year receive recognition and
an award at the club’s annual awards banquet.
We have all looked at the points trail and seen that some members have pulled far ahead in the points
race. Have you ever wondered how they do that? The answer is easy, they Chair or Host events. This is by
far the fastest way to earn big club points, Let me give you a real example:
On Saturday May 14, 2016 Paul and Barbara Lazor (2 of our newer members) cohosted their first ever SJCC
drive and eat event “The Noah’s Ark Run” an 80+mile high speed caravan ending in the Kemah area at Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill for lunch and cocktails. This being their first corvette run they recruited Suzanne (our
own Queen of Corvette Runs) and her better half Geoff as their wing-woman and wing-man. I on the other
hand just attended the event and enjoyed the spirited driving (and enjoying a pitcher of Bloody Mary’s at
Noah’s Ark). The club points were awarded as follows:
Paul: 14 points for chairing +10 points for working + 3 points for attending = 27 points total
Barbara: 14 points for cochairing + 10 points for working + 3 points for attending = 27 points total
Suzanne: 10 points for working the event + 3 points for attending = 13 points total
Geoff: 10 points for working the event + 3 points for attending = 13 points total
Danny: 3 points total for attendance only
But wait there’s even more opportunity to earn points from this event. If anyone who attended the event
writes a grand Sport Newsletter article for all the SJCC members to read they receive an additional 5
points.
Let me sum up by saying I hope I have inspired you to get involved with your club’s activities by hosting
your very own event, as I explained it is an extremely rewarding experience all around.
One last thing, due to circumstances beyond our control we did not have the member of the year vote in
May, we will be holding the second vote for 2016 Member of the Year at the June club meeting. So be sure
to attend!

Hosting Your Own SJCC Drive & Eat Event
The 12 Step Method
SJCC Drive & Eat events are by far the most popular events among SJCC members. We all love to caravan our corvettes through the back roads of Texas and we all love to eat! Combining these two things is an instant recipe for
a successful event. Have you ever thought of hosting your own event? It is easier than you think! Follow these
12 simple steps and your run could be the next Annual _________________ Run!!
1. Pick a date for your event—at least 2 months in advance.
2. Call, text, or email the Activities Director with the date you picked. I will send you confirmation that the date
is available and has been reserved for you!
3. Choose a starting point—the meeting spot to begin the run (suggest a large gas station with enough room for
cars, restrooms, coffee, and fuel).
4. Choose and ending point—restaurant or destination of where the event will end! (Hints: pick your favorite restaurant or do a Google search for what is in the area, view pics, read reviews, etc. Helpful to call the restaurant and
confirm date availability, space for at least 50 people, menu requirements—order off menu or special menu, and ask
about parking situation—is there special parking available for the corvettes?). Once location is confirmed, be sure
to notify the restaurant with final headcount prior to the event date.
5. Map out the route between the start and end point. (Suggestions: plan a restroom stop if the run will last
more than 1.5 hours; allow 15-20 minutes for the stop. A road map is a valuable tool for this step and Google maps
can be most helpful.
6. Do a pre-run. Take copies of your map so you can make changes to the route due to bad road conditions, construction, etc. Confirm the location of restrooms. Confirm timing along the route. Make multiple copies of the
“step-by-step” directions to be given out at the start of your event.
7. Make a flyer for your event. This includes name of the event, date, time, locations, and any other important
information that the attendees need to know. I can help you with the flyer!
8. Send your flyer to me (Activities Director) as soon as possible—1 or 2 months in advance is preferred.
9. I present it to the Board of Directors for approval, as well as get the event set up in the Electronic Invitation
System to all Club Members.
10. Help promote your event at the Club Meeting—bring copies of the flyer to the monthly meeting and be prepared to talk about the event and answer member’s questions.
11. Confirm final head count and any other final arrangements with the restaurant (1-2 days before event).
12. Day of the Event: have all members sign the “Sign In Sheet” and any appropriate waivers (I can assist with
getting you the proper forms). Pass out your step-by-step directions. Hold a “Driver’s Meeting” prior to leaving the
starting point and answer any questions. Relax, lead the charge and have a great time hosting your event!
YES—it is really this easy. A couple of quick phone calls, hour or so on the computer, a nice drive in the country
and you are good to go! If you hit any snags, REMEMBER—I AM HERE TO HELP!

I hope I don’t alienate all those folks that went to other schools of higher education, so just to let you know, this really has nothing to do with being an Aggie. Let me explain the history and how we came up with the name of the run.
Having joined the club in mid 2015, my wife Marcia and I are fairly new. Marcia worked for a public relations firm
that did new product launches for Toyota and Lexus. She would do “ride and drives” for journalist much like our
runs and I would help with developing the routes taken. We figured with our experience with doing routes for her
work, we could easily do a run of our own for the club.
Not knowing that Suzanne had already done a wine run in her Run to the Hills, we looked into going to Messina Hof.
We knew it was fairly close so it would make a good run for those in the area. And we like to drink wine.
We found some roads that I liked (I like tight turns, sweeping turns and fast straights.). Then we had the challenge of
finding a place where everyone could go to eat. We looked at Messina Hof for lunch, but they wanted a commitment for a group but we didn’t have any idea how many would be interested in going so we opted to find something
else. That’s when we found Koppe Bridge Bar and Grill (I pronounce it as “Copy”) in College Station. They are known
in the area for their burgers (they have won several awards) but they also have other outstanding food options.
We continued to fine tune the route and find some fun roads to travel for Corvettes. During this time we found out
that Suzanne had done a wine run in her Run to the Hills run. Here we thought we had something unique and different. I guess since the club has been in existence for since 1957, it was kind of naïve for me to think that we could
come up with something new. We considered doing something else besides going to Messina Hof, but the company
that I work for is splitting into 3 companies so work became busy and continues to be busy, so we decided to just go
with the run we had figured out. So for the title of the run we figured this would be a fun play on words and a copy
of the Run to the Hills and call it the Aggie (since it’s making a stop in College Station) Koppe (Koppe Bridge Bar and
Grill) Wine (Messina Hof) Run.
So now you know the history of the run and why it is named the way it is. The run itself starts at the Flying J Truck
Stop in Brookshire, TX on June 25th with a stop in College Station, TX for lunch at the Koppe Bridge Bar and Grill and
then on to the Messina Hof winery in Bryan, TX. At the winery, they have a tour of their winery and a tasting of 4
wines that you can choose. The glass that you use for the tasting is yours to keep. The cost of the tour and tasting is
$15 per person. While not everyone is interested in a tour, you are free to do your own tasting in their Tasting
Room.
The run has something for everyone; fast straights, some fast turns and some tight and winding turns. Then some
time to sit with fellow club members and enjoy some wine and conversation.

The Anniversary Celebration at the Museum is scheduled for September 1st thru the 3rd this
year. If you have not visited the Museum before, this is a perfect opportunity. It includes

The club was presented with the “Winner’s Circle” award as appreciation for our significant
financial contribution to the Museum in 2015.
Since our club is a Lifetime Member of the Museum our members are eligible for one year
free eMembership. This includes a subscription to the weekly NCM eNews, 5% Corvette
Store discount and an Emailed Membership Card. With this, you will get a better understanding of the Museum and our clubs support of it.
If anyone that is not a member of the Museum is planning to visit this year let me know as I

As I am sure you are all aware the club is holding a race weekend at the Museum’s track

NOAH’S ARK RUN HUGE SUCCESS!

Calling all Corvettes to the Drivers Meeting at
9:15 am on Saturday, May 14, started the animals
coming two by two (or more as you will see later
on).
Paul and Barbara Lazor did an amazing job planning their first ever run and we all thank them for
their time and efforts (and amazing directions).
Our leaders in their shark gear!
What a special day! As usual, we all gathered two
by two with our Corvettes at the Shell Station in
Fulshear. We were well briefed and given our
driving instructions for the day.
We had the honor of a friendly escort out of town
by local police.
Our drive took us over rivers, thru fields of rice,
corn and sorghum. We also had critters trying to
invade our group. I guess they forgot about the
two by two and came in larger groups! I heard most of the critters made it safely across
the road. Why do they cross the road, by the way?
The scenery was absolutely beautiful and the sunshine only made it better! At one point
on the Alvin Cutoff we had a good view of some of the field of drivers! We had a nice pit
stop at a Valero Station where we stopped to share stories and lies. Heard someone went
as fast as 140, even faster than Suzanne! He was pretty proud! I know we hit a flat out 95
for some distance with a high of 119 mph.
We finally ended up at Noak’s Ark Bar & Grill which had it’s own problems with power
thru the day. We sat up in the Parrot’s Nest with an amazing view of the water and the
sailboats. Lunch was delicious as was the visiting with old friends and new. Thanks again
for all your work Paul and Barbara. Let’s do it again!

Spring Corvette Show Season is Complete

The spring Corvette Show season in Houston is over, now that summer weather is beginning to be an everyday occurrence... and that's a good thing. The season started with the Space City show on April 2nd in
League City, then ours at Kemah on April 9th and most recently, the last two-Corvette Owners' Club of
Houston in Sugarland on April 23 and NAACC show on May 7 at the Fox and Hound on Westheimer.
At the COCH show in Sugarland, SJCC had 8 club members show their cars out of a total entrant list of 96
Corvettes. The weather was perfect and a lot of spectators and kids milled around the Sugarland Square,
making car owners a little nervous. The show seemed to be a bit more confusing than in previous years
as, though it was a People's Choice situation, trophies were awarded to some classes even though no cars
were classed. No award was given for club participation. Total awards were very few. Out of our 8 SJCC
club members entered, Frank Bobbie won the only award-Best Paint. Go figure.
At the NAACC show on May 7 at the Fox and Hound, SJCC was represented by 3 club members out of a
total entrant list of 75 Corvettes. Again the weather was perfect and a lot of spectators were at the show
also. The show went very smoothly although awarding winners from the long list of small raffle items
took way too long. Dana Petroni was a Class Winner with his C7 Convertible and Frank Bobbie won a Best
in Class trophy with his Z06 Coupe.
Looking over the 4 Corvette shows this spring season, I have to comment that, again, true to tradition, our
Kemah show was the only one that had to deal with rain, certainly not as bad as some years but rain
nonetheless.
The last local Corvette show currently approved for SJCC activity and concurs points is the San Houston
Corvette Club show currently scheduled for October 22 in the Woodlands. There will be more information on this show as the time gets closer.

SJCC 58 YEAR MEMORIES BY GORDON BISEL
I joined the club in 1959. My brother, Gary had a ‘57 Fuelie turquoise and beige. The club met first Friday
of each month at Boyd Mullin Chevrolet in Pasadena. Sponsor was Al Stokes, Sales Manager of Boyd
Mullin. His wife, Terri, had a ‘55 vette.
1959 era: Gordon and Gary heading for Club meeting would stop by John and Zekie Mae McVeigh’s home
for spaghetti supper and then we would race to the meeting, much to the chagrin of many HPD cruising
cars.
December 1959—Christmas Party was at the Ram’s Club near downtown Houston. We were all there with
wives/dates having a great time and while in there, brother Gary’s ‘57 Vette was stolen from the parking
lot. He and date spent rest of night at HPD making reports, etc. Car was found next morning all ok. Thank
heavens! Just taken for a joy ride by a shop boy where the car had been recently serviced. Kid made a
key.
‘59-’61: Helping club members build the club car to race the SCCA circuit. It was a ‘57 Vette named Humpty Dumpty. Had a 270 hp engine and ran Firestone 500 tires which is all we could afford. It wasn’t a great
looker, but it was red and ran like a scared rabbit and let many Porsches and whatever its rear end most of
the time. We ran it at Scholes Field in Galveston and many club members caravanned there to watch and
support the racing crew.
We made/had many good friends throughout these years, some of whom are still around and are members of the club today. As my memory works, some of them are us (of course)...Gordon, Ladelle and Gary
Bisel, John and Zekie Mae McVeigh, Perry and Charlotte Edgar, Harry and Hoss Green, Dr. Zoltan and Joan
Petrany, Mr. and Mrs. Bush, Van Kline, Clarence Roberts, Forrest and June Ratliff.
The McVeighs and Edgars and us are still good friends today. Have Vettes and are all members of the club
now. Harry Green is also a good friend, but only has BMW’s now.
He grew up.
1961:Gordon bought his first new Vette, a ‘61 Fawn Beige in and out roadster, with a black top, 300hp and
4speed. Great looker and was a ball to drive. Bought it from Al Stokes at Boyd Mullin Chevy. Price
$3700.
‘61-’62: Many club events like rallies, navigational, poker runs and economy which were a ball and afterward members always gathered and benched raced.
One Sunday in ‘62, Club went to Beaumont Drag Strip. We got rained out so we all went to my parent’s
home and had great food and drink. There were ‘57—’62 Vettes parked in their driveway and up and
down the street. What a sight...20 to 30 vettes all over the place in a neighborhood setting.
‘63: I sold my ‘61 and bought a new ‘63 Sting Ray, silver, dark blue interior.
‘63 or ‘64: Club goes to Austin and runs a hill climb trophy driving our ‘63. Club had about 30-40 members.
We are still Vette fans—have just acquired our 18th one! A 2014 Silver Titanium C7 Coupe.
I really enjoy the members of our club. It’s a good, sincere, fun group of people!

Gene Kingery Scholarship Application

Purpose of Scholarship: Assisting eligible candidate with the continuation of formal education. Formal education applies to
any school and/or college with curriculum, whether it is undergraduate, post graduate, or occupational school. “Leisure Learning” courses are not considered as continuation of formal education. Preference for scholarship(s) will be given to graduating
high school seniors and recent graduates wishing to attend college or an occupational school.
Eligibility: Primary member in good standing (as outlined in SJCC Bylaws), spouse, or significant other, children, grandchildren
of primary member. Application for scholarship is on an annual basis and must re-apply for the following academic year.
Requirements
High School-must have graduated (or will graduate this June) with an overall GPA (grade point average on 4-point system) of not
less than 2.50.
College Undergraduate-students must have an overall GPA of not less than 2.50.
Occupational School-students must have a scholastic standing in the top half of the class or what equates to a 2.50 GPA.
Applications must be completed 100% and submitted along with the completed recommendations to the “Scholarship Administrator” by the posted deadline, or they will not be considered.
Request for application to scholarship must be made by mail to designated address. “Mail” is understood to mean U.S. Postal
Service or electronic mail.
Funding
Board of Directors of SJCC, in January, will allocate funding for the scholarship program.
Event Chairperson may designate a portion of event proceeds to be allocated for scholarship program for current year with cutoff date of June 15. After this date, proceeds will be set aside for the following year’s program.
Administration
January-President appoints three person committee with one person as committee head to accept and review applications that
will be mailed to the committee head’s designated address. Club Secretary will maintain administrative material and application
to be presented to committee chair and Newsletter Editor.
April, May, June-Publication in Grand Sport of scholarship requirements, eligibility, and designated mailing address for request
of and receipt of applications.
July and August-Publication in Grand Sport of scholarship deadline of August 31 st.
September-September Board Meeting presentations by Scholarship Committee Chair those recommendation(s) for scholarship
awards for approval by Board. It is understood that the Board may request review of completed applications. Allocation by
Board of scholarship fund to be divided equally among recipients.
Publication of scholarship recipients to be in the October
Grand Sport that is prepared during the month of September.
October-Awarding of check(s) at club meeting to those recipients able to attend and mailing to those not in attendance.

SJCC Board of Directors meetings are held the third Monday of each month at AutoNation Chevrolet, Gulf
Freeway, Houston, TX at 7pm. Yearly membership dues are required. Annual dues are $70 for a single
membership and $90 for joint membership.
