Volume 23-09 september 2014 l ica f Of etter of the Newsl y l h t Mon AND THE COVVC NORTH Thoughts from your Board Member Ann Gillman VOLKSFEST 24 WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! We did it again! Isn’t it incredible that for the last 24 years, our volunteer team—COVVC members, Kids n Kamp helpers, Boy Scout Troop 21 and the WMHS Boosters—have been able to put on such an outstanding show for literally thousands of total participants (registrants, vendors, spectators)? It helps that the weather was great for us (again)-we had over 300 registered vehicles this year. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the Boosters tent was crowded pretty much all day. As worn out as we volunteers might have felt after the show, it was easy then to overlook just how smoothly Volksfest went. Thanks so much to ALL the volunteers, vendors and our dealer sponsors, Byers, Hatfield, and MAG, for all their help and generosity. I haven’t seen the final numbers, but it seems likely that we will be able to make a nice contribution to Kids N Kamp again this year. Our Top 50 format was really the only new twist to Volksfest 24, and we did get some interesting feedback as a result. Very special thanks to our show judges, who had a VERY tough job making those decisions which have been much discussed/debated since the show. The COVVC Board has scheduled the first post-show meeting to discuss this year’s Volksfest and start thinking about Volksfest 25. PLEASE feel free to submit your comments and ANY suggestions for improvement during our next meeting, while they’re fresh in your mind. The best ideas are from those who know their jobs best—that’s YOU, so please don’t hesitate to contribute. Next year’s show represents 25 years of Volksfest--we need you to help make it extra special! There are still plenty of opportunities for all of us to get out and cruise. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! We love impromptu rides, and there may be some other COVVC members who’d enjoy joining in, too. Put out the call, and you may find some company for driving tours large and/or small. And please let’s all hope for great weather this year for the chicken fry (September 11)! Please RSVP to Greg at greggillman@wowway.com or 614-891-3733 to let us know how many people to expect and bring along a side dish to share and your own beverages. And if weather permits, please drive your VW’s! (Our neighbors LOVE this and are always asking when the Volkswagens are coming.) See you at the Chicken Fry! Meeting Info on Page 5 Renew your COVVC Membership! Please take a few minutes to check the expiration date on your mailing label. Please note we now accept membership payments via PayPal! Please include your current address, phone and e-mail so we can verify that we have your current info on file. Secretrary Ted Chaney Meeting Minutes August 8th 2014 The August 8 meeting was held at the show site, Watkins Memorial High School. Mark Garrett conducted the meeting, which consisted of the usual run-down of instructions/concerns regarding the show. Nothing of lasting importance. The show (24th annual) was a rousing success with over 300 cars. Volkswagen TOYS Well thats it for this month! Volkswagen Let’s Talk Toys! Michael Williams TOYS Welcome back everyone!! The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month was spotted while walking around the swap area last month at our show. I’m always on the lookout for unique VW toys and believe me; this month’s toy fits the bill. The lady I purchased the toy from purchased the toy back in the early1960’s while on vacation in Germany with her family. Many of the stories I’ve heard over the years about where a VW toy was purchased or found are truly priceless. This month’s toy is a yellow and red colored split window VW bus produced by the Ichiko Manufacturing Company of Tokyo, Japan during the early 1960’s. This bump and go battery operated toy is constructed of tin and is about 8 inches long. When the switch is turned on, the bus begins to move forward with a bump and go action while playing some type of children’s song. The toy represents a school bus and is based on an early 1960’s VW bus. This toy is very rare and doesn’t come up for sale very often. Consider yourself extremely lucky if you find this toy with the box. Most of these boxes never made it past day one once the child removed the toy from the box. The value of the toy in good condition with no box is around $115 - $150, with a boxed mint example coming in around $225 - $275. Ichiko VW buses are very sought after by collectors around the world and continue to bring some very impressive prices when changing hands in today’s market, so keep your eyes open fellow collectors. Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !! 2 www.COVVC.org Let’s Go Cruisin The Cruise In season is winding down but there are still some car shows happening around the area, I hope everyone had fun this summer!. s Ti n a G i b on Sept 12 – O’Reilly’s, 1911 Brice Rd, Cols – reg 5-7 Sept 13 – Lancaster Fairgrounds – reg 11-2 Sept 13 – Dans Drive In , 1881 S High St, Cols – reg 4-8 Sept 13 – American Legion, 27 S 3rd, Zanesville – reg 4-8 Sept 13 – Walmat on Georgesville Rd, Cols – reg 12-2:30 Sept 14 – 3636 Parsons Ave, Cols – reg 9-12 Sept 14 – Centerburg @ Park – reg 9-12 Sept 14 – Crooksville/Roseville @ Ceramic Pottery Museum – 12-3 Sept 14 – Buckeye Lake @ KOA, jamming county sock hop – reg 11-2 Sept 14 – Dublin @ 2900 Martin Rd Discover Church – reg 1-3 Sept 19 – City BBQ, 5979 E Main, Reynoldsburg – reg 4:30 -7 Sept 20 – Utica @ Olde Mill on Rt 13 – car show 1-6 Sept 20 – Carroll @ 4465 Coonpath Rd behind Joe Carson Honda – reg 10-12 Sept 20 – Great Southern Shopping Center, S High, Cols – show 4-8 Sept 20 – Zanesville downtown Main St – reg 3-5 Member Contribution Marilyn Allen OKTOBERFEST SEPTEMBER 28th 2014 The Oktoberfest will be held at the fairgrounds again this year and we have been invited to share our classic volkswagens again. We’ve all been there before- either the engine won’t start or died while you were driving. Now (and sometimes NOW!) you need to figure out what is causing this issue. Usually if the engine dies or won’t start, it’s one of two things- lack of fuel or lack of spark. With a carbureted car, checking for fuel is rather easy- remove the air cleaner, stroke the throttle, and look for the accelerator pump squirting fuel into the throat of the carb. If fuel is present it should run, at least for a second. On rare occasion you’ll have water in the tank and see “something” squirt into the carburetor throat. It may be water and not fuel, but this does not happen often. Checking for spark is slightly more complicated but not difficult, and you’ll need two people or a remote start switch. Because of this logistical problem, many guys have installed a pushbutton starter switch in their engine compartment so they can trigger the starter while working in the engine bay. This way, if you’re caught on the road with a no-start you can diagnose it yourself without needing a helper to turn the ignition switch. In any event, begin by turning the ignition switch on. Using your test light, connect the ground clip to a good solid ground like any good metal part attached to the engine. To make sure the light works and the connection is good, touch the tip of the test light to the generator B+ terminal to make sure it lights. The ignition circuit starts at the ignition switch, which feeds current through the ignition coil and is grounded by the distributor. The points themselves act as the “ground side switch” that open and close, completing the circuit for the coil. The momentary time the points are closed builds a magnetic field up in the coil primary windings, and opening the points opens this circuit. Opening the circuit collapses this magnetic field from the primary windings into the secondary windings within the coil, which is the magic that makes the big blue spark jump from the center of the coil. From here the spark goes into the center tower of the distributor cap and is pointed to the correct cylinder by the ignition rotor. Anyway, enough of ignition 101. With the key switch on, touch the tip of your test light to the coil positive (+) terminal, which is usually a black 14ga wire on VWs. The test light should illuminate showing the circuit is good from the ignition switch to the coil. To test the distributor (points) side of the coil you’ll have to crank the engine and test for power at the coil negative (-) terminal, which is commonly a green wire going to the distributor. This wire is usually hard wired to the condenser and replaced when the condenser is changed. While the engine is cranking, the test light should be blinking very quickly showing the points are making and breaking the circuit. At this time there “should” be spark coming from the coil tower. (Pay no attention to power at the coil negative wire while the engine is not cranking. It will usually show no power with the test light unless the engine comes to rest with a cylinder near TDC, which is not common.) If the test light is lit all the time while the engine is cranking, your points are open, corroded, have a broken wire, or a bad ground. Use the test light to “follow the power” by taking the distributor cap off and checking for power at the point arm itself. If there is power at the point arm make sure the points are closing. If they are, the point surfaces themselves are not making contact, and this is fairly common due to corrosion or severe pitting. If the test light is off at the coil negative while cranking, your points may have closed up, or a wire shorted out. Pull the green (points/condenser) wire off the coil and once again check for power at the coil negative. article appeared the positive, February 1969 If there This is power at the incoil noissue. power at the coil negative, and the green wire is unhooked, you have to Jim Meyerinforthe not coil only saving these fascinating articles anThanks open circuit primary. The purpose of the condenser is to amplify the magnetic field in the coil as these events are happening very quickly. In a typical ACVW engine on the highway running at 3500rpm the coil is firing 116 times per second! If the coil is faulty there may be no spark, but if the condenser is defective you may have a weak spark which will not run the engine properly. I have seen bad condensers which mimic a fuel starvation problem- the engine starts and runs but will not rev up hardly at all. Diagnosing a bad condenser is best by replacement- try a new one. Partly for this reason I keep a complete spare distributor assembly in my VWs along with the tools to replace it. Diagnosing a bad coil is also commonly done by substitution, but I can give you a tip: With the engine off, pull the fat coil wire from the center tower of the distributor cap. To help reach the terminal temporarily set a 1” long screw or cotter pin in the center tower of the distributor cap. Hold the coil wire against this screw while your helper starts the engine. While the engine is on fast idle, slowly pull the coil wire away from the screw, creating a gap that the spark must jump to keep the engine running. If you have a strong coil and ignition system, this spark will easily jump a half inch or more while the engine is running. During this time it should be a strong blue line, if it is a fat yellow spark it shows weakness in the system. Use common sense while working around the engine bay and use heavy rubber gloves while performing this test! The season is winding down, now is the time for a nice fall cruise to watch the trees turn colors. Start making a list of things you need to attend to during the winter so you don’t forget them.
