2015 DEDICATION TO THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION SCHOOL
EARLY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Religious Education began as early as 1874 when the Sisters of St. Joseph came from Tucson.
Sisters- Superior Maxima, Sister Monica, and Sister Martha were the first sisters recorded to have opened Sacred Heart Convent and School.
The flood of 1891 destroyed the school and the sisters then left the area.
The Sisters of Mercy followed and built a new school. After two years, however, they were forced to leave because of financial difficulties.
Records show that the Sisters of St. joseph opened a school at Ft. Yuma. The United States had abandoned Ft. Yuma in 1880. The Director of the Catholic
Indian Bureau was asked to take over the Fort. By 1886, the old Fort building had been converted to facilities for a school and was doing well. However, by
1895, the government passed out support for denomination schools. The sisters left the school in 1900.
Celebrating 85 years of Catholic Education:
There would be no religious school in Yuma until 1929. Father Paul Figueroa writes – “ The building of the convent is of three stories high in a very interesting
place of the new modern city on YUMA HEIGHTS. Sisters coming from the northern states seemed to be very pleased.”
Fr. Felican Payas, C.M. crystalized the dreams and work of his predecessors. It was Fr. Payas who invited the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity to take
over the new Parochial School.
It is interesting to note that, according to reports, Fr. Payas received an acceptance letter from the Sisters after the entire Parish made a public novena to St.
Joseph.
The first Sisters who came to Yuma in 1930 were Sister Edgar Annen, Sister DeLiillis Pritzl, Sister Justin Pollack, and Sister Prisca Zehrens. By 1932, the
school had an enrollment of 130 in the first four grades of grammar school and a kindergarten. The school work was under the supervision of Sister Justin
with assistance from Sister Bennett, kindergarten and music; Sister Prisca, first grade and Sister Agatha, second grade; and Sister Delillis, fourth grade.
Classes continued in that building until 1970; the building at that time was beyond repair. An application was made to the Bishop and his council to close the
school in the Spring of 1970. Bishop Green granted borrowing power to the Parish in order for the school to be relocated near the church and convent on
Avenue B.

WELCOME TO IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH
YUMA, AZ
As part of the celebration of the Year of the Consecrated Life, the
Diocese of Tucson is asking us to pray a Novena for an increase
in vocations to the religious life. We ask you to join us in praying
for more young men and women to answer God’s call to serve
him. We ask you to pray the following prayer from January 23 –31,
2015.
LORD OF THE HARVEST,
BLESS young people with the gift of courage to respond to your
call. Open their hearts to great ideals, to great things.
INSPIRE all of your disciples to mutual love and
giving-for vocations blossom in the good soil of
faithful people.
INSTILL those in religious life, Parish ministries, and
families with the confidence and grace to invite others to embrace
the bold and noble path of a life
consecrated to you.
UNITE us to Jesus through prayer and sacrament, so that we may
cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of
justice and peace. Amen
Thank you. The Franciscan Sisters.

BIENVENIDO A LA MISION DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE
YUMA, ARIZONA
CAMBIEMOS NUESTRAS VIDAS
Aunque no llega a decirles

A quick update on our Church renovations. The last of the stained glass windows were installed in
November. Painting the ceiling has been completed, only the entry way and part of the choir loft still remain. A large donation of $5,000 allowed us to
accomplish this work, but we still need your help to finish the painting. Most of the pews in the main church have been refinished, as well as is possible;
the kneelers have been recovered; and new bottom rubber silencers have been provided where necessary. There are still 20 pews in the main church, 15
in the chapel, and 6 in the choir loft to be refinished. The balance on this part of the renovation still needs funds for completion. Please consider
purchasing a pew for $1,000.00 or donating whatever your family can afford to finish this portion of the renovation as soon as possible.
The 2015 improvements include the handicap ramp into the chapel on the north side. We do have the plans, but need funds to complete this
project.
In addition, Mission Plumbing has volunteered to get the sewer lines dug and the plumbing for the new restrooms completed this spring. This is
a major hurdle we need to tackle before starting this project. We hope to have new, larger restrooms by next summer.
And finally, designs have been completed for new stained glass windows on the bottom 24 windows of the main church. The center windows
will cost $2,000.00 and each side window will cost $1,650.00. These windows will match the design of the new upper stained glass windows. If you are
interested and would like to sponsor a pew or a stained glass window, please sign up by leaving your name and phone number on the board located in the
main entrance of the church. You may call Kathy Ahuactzin, 580-7948 with any concerns or suggestions to continue the progress of these projects.
Immaculate Conception Parish sincerely thanks everyone who has donated to assist us in the renovation of our beautiful church.
UPDATE DIAMOND CELEBRATION
As you know, each calendar year from now through 2016 will emphasize a different aspect of our Parish. The first year, 2013,
was dedicated to the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe; the various groups that were a part of the fabric of Our Lady of
Guadalupe were emphasized. The second year, 2014, was dedicated to the Franciscan Sisters and began on January 12, 2014
with a Mass and reception. The history of the Sisters and other events were emphasized. The year closed with a Solemn Mass
presided over by the Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas on December 7, 2014. This year, 2015 will be dedicated to the Immaculate
Conception School. It will begin with an Open House at the School on Sunday, January 25, 2015. When our Diamond Celebration
started in January 2013, we encouraged our Parishioners to support a campaign to raise the necessary funds to continue the
celebration through 2016. At that time, each family was asked to pledge $600.00 over a 3 year period. Many of you did so and we
THANK YOU, but others haven't had the opportunity. To date we have received pledges of $264,125.10 but it is not too late to
make a pledge at this time. We have made some great improvements to Our Lady of Guadalupe and to the convent, and we hope
to continue our goals at the school and in our Church. The Parish office can assist you with any questions. Thank you.
ACTUALIZACION CELEBRACION DIAMANTE
pregunta. Gracias.
