A Dirty Family Secret
There’s a “secret” in the Lord’s family that we don’t want to talk
about - prejudice. This topic is like “drunk old Uncle Clem.”
Members of the family would just as soon deny or ignore him.
At the very least, no one wants to talk to him about his problem!
Sadly, prejudice has been part of the Lord’s church from its
beginning.
The apostle Peter was raised to be a “good Jew.” Those who were “good Jews” did not
mix with Gentiles. Now if you had to deal with Gentiles professionally, that was one
thing. But no “good Jew” would ever mix with Gentiles personally or socially. One
day Peter received a vision in which there were all sorts of unclean animal’s that “good
Jews” were not allowed to eat. But God said to him, “Arise, Peter, kill and eat,” (Acts
10:9-16). Peter, as a “good Jew,” was aghast! “By no means, Lord, for I have never
eaten anything unholy or unclean,” (v. 14). But the Lord responded, saying, “What
God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy,” (v. 15).
The next day, after having been told by God to go with a group of men who were
looking for him, Peter came to the home of a Gentile. Now a “good Jew” would never
enter a Gentile’s house. But Peter had listened to what God said in v. 15. So he
solemnly declared, “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show
partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right, is
welcome to Him,” (vs. 34-35). The word “partiality” comes from two Greek words,
meaning, “to accept the face.” Thus, God accepts all others (“at face value”) no
matter how they appear physically.
Now if God accepts all others irrespective of what they look like, then so must we. In
fact, an elder in the Lord’s church, wrote, “My brethren, do not hold your faith in our
glorious Lord with an attitude of personal favoritism,” (James 2:1). The words
“personal favoritism” come from the exact same Greek word as is found in Acts 10:34
(i.e. “partiality”). In other words, we must not think it is because of our appearance
(whether white or black, etc.) that God has accepted us. Therefore we then must accept
others “at face value,” and also reject all forms of prejudice, (see James 2:2-9).
This dirty little secret will never go away until God’s people repent and take into our
hearts God’s words that are found in II Corinthians 5:15-17. Here Paul writes, “…they
who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died
and rose again on their behalf. Therefore from now on we
recognize no man according to the flesh; even though we have
known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no
longer. Therefore if any man is in Christ Jesus He is a new
creature; the old things have passed away; behold, new things have
come.”

The Elders of Ridgewood Church of
Christ have called a Congregational
Meeting to determine the direction
of the church in regards to current
and future plans for our facilities.
We request that you make every effort to
attend this meeting. The Congregational
Meeting will take place in two weeks on
Sunday, August 23rd at 2 pm in Jr. Auditorium.
There will be a “Beat the Heat” ice

We will all “beat the heat”
together in fellowship.

you are the only one who gets burned”
Forgiveness
As we strive to be like Christ, how do we need to treat others? In Paul’s
letter to the Philippians and Colossians he gives instruction to the brethren
on how to treat others. In Philippians 2:1-5 – “Therefore if there is any
consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the
Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded,
having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be
done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let
each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only
for his own interest, but also for the interest of others, Let this mind be in you which was also in
Christ Jesus,” and also in Colossians 3:12-13 – “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and
beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”
Forgiveness is not optional, we must forgive others if we want God to forgive
us. Forgiving others may be difficult at times, but it is essential if we want
forgiveness. Forgiveness does not have limits, we are commanded to forgive
even when forgiveness is not asked. Jesus shows us the ultimate example of
forgiveness while hanging on the cross as we read in Luke 23:34 – Then Jesus
said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
Without God’s forgiveness, our sins will separate us from God and we will be eternally lost.
