Not surprisingly the sharpshooter is looking forward to the three-point competition and expects South Australians Ben Madgen and Oscar Forman to put on a show. “Ossie will be perfect for it,” Maher said. “He doesn’t have a lot of jump and has just that flick of the wrist.” Lucas Walker does have a lot of jump and Tigers assistant THE NBL's biggest names – past and present – are excited about the return of the NBL All-Stars. Paulo Kennedy reports. Daniel Johnson Photo: Getty 4 sh wtime 'Ossie will be perfect for it (the three-point shootout)' – Brett Maher coach Darryl McDonald encourages fans not to miss the dunk contest. “He’s been working on it after training, he’s got something special coming.” The main event will be like travelling back in time, with players such as Madgen, Tom Abercrombie, Cedric Jackson and Daniel Johnson resembling stars of yesteryear such as Maher, Sam Mackinnon, Darryl McDonald and Chris Anstey. “Of the guys playing at the moment he’s (Madgen) the guy who’s closest to me,” Maher said of his former training partner. The Sydney Kings star has been re-living old All-Star games on YouTube and says his favourite memory is “Willie Farley in the dunk comp”. He suspects teammate Darnell Lazare might create some memories of his own. “I've seen him do some big dunks around practice so I think he might do pretty well.” McDonald said “it’s not for me to make the comparison” with Cedric Jackson, but loves his remarkably similar skill set, while Johnson learned the trade under Anstey at the Tigers. For his part “DJ” is relishing the chance to finish off Jackson’s slick passes, just as Anstey once combined with D-Mac. “I’ll have to be ready, that’s for sure,” he said. Oscar Forman sh wtime 5 All-stars ❙ 2012 souvenir edition Star, dunk memories The 2012 NBL All-Star Game will be the first hoops extravaganza the league has held for five years, but NBL history is littered with truly memorable All-Star moments. The last NBL All-Star Game was back in December 2007 and it featured the coronation of a new Australian basketball star. Nathan Jawai had topped off a remarkable rookie season with the Cairns Taipans by being named to the Australian AllStars side that took on the World at The Cage in Melbourne. Jawai, who would go on to be drafted and play in the NBA, stunned the crowd with a performance of unbridled power that exemplified the reason he would become known as the "Aussie Shaq". Jawai effortlessly threw down a series of rim-rattling dunks as he registered 24 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. His efforts guided the Aussies to a 146-141 victory and earned him game MVP honours. This year the NBL will revert from the Aussies versus Internationals format to North versus South. Power play: Nathan Jawai in the 2007 All-Stars game. It was under this format that NBL legend Andrew Gaze scored an amazing event record 43 points in the 1989 NBL All-Star Game. Playing at the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre, Gaze went 8-of-14 from long-range and also added five rebounds, five assists and two steals in a typically Gaze-esque performance. He took out the match MVP award despite his North team losing to the South, 143-141. Of course All-Stars isn’t just about the game, with the slam dunk competition often providing some of the most memorable highlights. In the 1993 slam dunk competition an unknown by the name of Brett Rainbow, who was a rarely used development player with the Melbourne Tigers, would literally come from the clouds to take the title. Rainbow ended his three attempts with a superb 360 degree slam that set the crowd alight and ensured he picked up his third straight perfect score from the judges to win the title. In 2006, another unheralded youngster would follow in Rainbow’s footsteps. Everard Bartlett, now a Perth Wildcats guard but then a Breaker, was initially questioned as an inclusion in the slam dunk competition at The Kingdome. He soon showed just why he belonged. He started with a dunk jumping over three the top of three children and finished with an alley-oop to himself which he caught, wrapped under his leg and threw home with gusto. Needless to say, Bartlett swept to the title and straight into NBL folklore. Timeout with NRL star Lote Tuqiri The Wests Tigers winger is playing in the Celebrity and Legends 3x3. We asked him about his love of basketball. Who are your favourite players currently in the NBL? I’m looking forward to seeing Darnell Lazare post up and throw some points down. Have you played much basketball yourself? I did at school but gave it up after that to concentrate on my rugby career. I really liked to play but I always seemed to get ankle injuries. What can the fans expect you to show them on the court? It’s not going to be long! I’m a good team man. I’ll dish off more than I throw to the hoop. What do you think of your celebrity teammates? Wendell Sailor can’t play – he talks himself up (laughs). He thinks he is Sidney Dean – Wesley Snipes’ character out of White Men Can’t Jump. Hopefully I can play with Cal Bruton, I don’t know if I’m in his team but I look forward to that. The romance is back Official airline of the NBL All-stars ❙ 2012 Reece Mastin souvenir edition All-Star x-factor Australian singing sensation and winner of The X-Factor Reece Mastin will perform a five-song set at today's NBL All-Star showcase. The 18-year-old recording star won’t be the only celebrity performer, with renowned Melbourne DJ Jason Serini to entertain Adelaide Arena. In on-court action, some of the NBL's greatest ever players will take the court with other stars from other sporting codes and celebrities in the All-Star Celebrity and Legends 3x3 game. Australian basketball greats Al Green, Mark Davis, Darryl McDonald, Cal Bruton and Andrew Gaze will participate, along with Masterchef favourite Callum Hann, former rugby league and union great Wendell Sailor, Adelaide Crows coach Brenton Sanderson, Wests Tigers NRL star Lote Tuqiri and former Crows coach and 5AA radio personality Graham Cornes. For some, the dunk contest will be the day’s most anticipated event, ahead of even the All-Star Game, as a handful of the finest athletes in Australia make what seems impossible to most of us mere mortals look easy. Dunker Expect plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” from the Adelaide Arena stands as spring-heeled Breakers forward Tom Abercrombie, Tigers Lucas Walker and Bennie Lewis (replacing the injured Mitch Creek) and explosive Kings import Darnell Lazare soar above the rim and try to out-wow each other. And it wouldn’t seem right to hold an NBL dunk contest without aptly named Hawks guard Lance Hurdle. Round 1 – Score Mark DMac Those who follow the Hawks closely might be surprised to see Hurdle in the line-up – he rarely dunks during games – but the 188cm guard has never lost a dunk contest and as a two-foot jumper is much more suited to this format. Besides, fellow two-foot leapers Dominique Wilkins and Jason Richardson managed just fine in their heyday (have fun on YouTube with those names).
