This manual serves as a quick reference for adjustments
and controls of the machine for operators who are
familiar with the machine and controls.
In no case does it replace the Operation Manual.
To prevent injury to persons or machines, the Operation
Manual must be read carefully
before the machine is used.
Z900B, Z900M, Z900R ZTrak™ Pro-Series™
Gas Commercial Mowers
The Z900B, Z900M and Z900R Series ZTraks are
available in 12 different models equipped with either
7 Iron II or 7 Iron Pro mower decks (48”, 54”,60” 72”
Side Discharge, and 48”,54”, 60” Mulch On Demand™
(MOD)) and 1” to 5.5” HOC.
Machine Optimization
Document
The fuel capacity is 11.5 gallons. All models are
designed to run on regular grade unleaded fuel with
an octane rating of 87 octane or higher and fuel
blends containing up to 10% ethanol or up to 15%
MTBE reformulated fuel are acceptable. Flex Fuel
(Ethanol blended fuels such as E85, E40, E30, E20,
E15, and other blends) are only acceptable for use in
the Z925M EFI Flex Fuel model.
There are 3 available seat options available from the
Factory depending on the Series:
• Z900B: Deluxe and Isolation
• Z900M and Z900R: Deluxe, Isolation and Full
Suspension
All models are powered by Kohler or Kawasaki twin
cylinder air-cooled gas engines. Kohler engines
are equipped with a carburetor or EFI fuel delivery
system.
The transmissions are unitized with 13 cc
displacement piston pumps / wheel motors, gear
reduction final drive and wet disc brakes. The Z900B
and Z900M Series allow up to 10 mph transport speed
while the Z900R’s allow up to 12 mph with hydraulic
flow cross porting for improved cooling.
The decks are equipped with 3 spindles driven by an
engine mounted electric PTO clutch and single belt.
Z900B and Z900M Series use a manual foot operated
deck lift while the Z900R’s are hydraulic.
Z900B and Z900M Series use a hand actuated park
brake while the Z900R’s is foot.
All models utilize the Brake-N-Go system by returning
the steering levers to neutral while engaging the park
brake.
The front tires on the Z900B series are pneumatic
while the Z900M and Z900R are semi-pneumatic.

Machine Starting Tips
Key Setup and Adjustments
– Machine
1. Sit on operators seat.

1. Inspect tires for proper inflation and wear. Use a
pressure gauge accurate at lower pressures. Adjust
pressure as necessary:
• Front: B Series - Inflate to 18 psi (124 kPa).
• Rear: All - Inflate to 12 psi (83 kPa).
NOTE: Operating tires below recommended pressure
can cause premature tire failure. Operating tires above
recommended pressure can cause undesirable tracking
and compaction of turf area.

2. Lock the park brake:
• R Series - press pedal (A) until locked.
• B / M Series – pull lever (B) until locked.

3. Set throttle lever (C) position:
• Cold engine – ½ to ¾ fast throttle position.
• Warm engine – fast throttle position.
4. Set choke knob (D) position (does not apply to EFI
models):
• Cold engine – pull up fully.
• Warm engine – if necessary, pull up fully or
anywhere in-between.
5. Turn key (E) to the start position and release once
engine starts.
6. If choke was set, push knob down.
2. Check engine oil level:
• Set the dipstick (A) on the tube and then remove to
check engine oil.
• Do not screw dipstick down onto tube to check oil.
• Add oil as needed through dipstick.
3. Check transmission oil level:
NOTE: High Viscosity HyGard (J20C) is the only oil that
should be used. Do not use Bio-HyGard, or any other
type of oil.
• Raise and lock seat.
• When cold, oil should be seen in between MIN and
MAX on reservoir (B).
• Add oil as needed through reservoir cap.

4. Check and adjust control lever position for
optimal operator comfort:
• Sit on operator seat, lock the park brake and
pull control levers (C) in to simulate machine
operation.
• To raise or lower control levers, remove hardware
(D), position levers to desired height and reinstall
hardware. Do not tighten fully and go to next
step.
• To adjust the pitch of control levers, loosen
hardware (D) slightly and position levers to
desired placement and tighten hardware.
• To adjust gap (E) between control levers, loosen
jam nut (F) slightly and tighten or loosen set
screws (G) as needed on each side of machine
Tighten jam nut to secure position.
5. Check and adjust neutral:
• Sit on operator seat, start engine and move
throttle to fast idle.
• Ensure control lever are in the neutral lock
position and unlock the park brake.
• If either rear tire rotates, tighten or loosen nut(s)
(H) until tire(s) stop.
• If more fine adjustment is required, safely park
and raise the rear of the machine enough to allow
rear tires to turn without moving the machine and
repeat procedure.
6. Check and adjust tracking:
NOTE: Check and adjust tracking AFTER neutral
has been adjusted and tires have been inspected
for proper inflation. Checking the machine tracking
MUST be done on flat ground in wide open area with
no obstacles.
• Sit on operator seat, start engine, move throttle to
fast idle and unlock the park brake.
• Move control levers fully forward.
• If machine does not go straight, follow steps
below.
• If machine tracks to the right, turn adjusting screw
(I) clockwise one rotation.
• If machine tracks to the left, turn adjusting screw
(I) counter-clockwise one rotation.
• Test machine for proper tracking repeating steps
above if necessary.

7. Changing position of ROPS:
IMPORTANT: If ROPS must be folded to operate in a
low clearance area, do not use seat belt. Raise ROPS
and use seat belt as soon as conditions permit.
• Remove spring clips (J) from the pin (K) on inside
left and right sides of ROPS.
• Remove pins from outside left and right sides of
ROPS.
• Position ROPS to desired position.
• Reinstall pins through holes and ROPS.
• Reinstall spring clips.
8. Adjusting ride comfort features on full suspension
seat:
• Knob (L) controls weight.
• Knob (M) controls seat back.
• Knob (N) controls lumbar.
9. Adjusting armrests on all seats is achieved by
raising armrests and turning adjustment screws to
desired height.
NOTE: When a Material Collection System
attachment is installed, the ROPS cannot be fully
lowered. If the ROPS must be lowered, place it into
the intermediate position.

Key Setup and Adjustments – All
Decks
NOTE: Tires should be properly inflated and
anti-scalp wheels adjusted prior to checking and
adjusting the deck.
1. Check and adjust level (side-to-side):
• Lower the deck so that the height of cut (HOC)
knob aligns to index mark 3 on the control panel.
NOTE: Numerical Index mark on control panel
should equal HOC in inches at the front of the blade
tip when the blades are oriented front-to-back.
• Position left and right blades side-to-side.
• Using a short ruler or leveling gauge, measure
the distance from the outer edge of the left and
right blades to the ground. This measurement
should be 3-1/16 in. to 3-1/8 in.

• Loosen jam nut (A), adjust rod (B) on each side as
needed.
• Tighten jam nuts.
2. Check and adjust deck rake (front-to-rear):
• Lower the deck so that HOC knob on aligns with
index mark 3.
• Position left and right blades front-to-rear.
• Using a short ruler or leveling gauge, measure
the distance from the outer edge of the left and
right blades to the ground. This measurement
should be 3 in. at the front and 3-1/8 in.
to 3-1/4 in. at the rear.

• Loosen jam nut (C), adjust tube nut (D) on each
side as needed.
• Tighten jam nuts to 67 N•m (50 ft-lb).
NOTE: Deck should be secure on all four corners after
deck has been leveled. If it is not, check spindles,
blades, linkages and hardware for damage. Replace if
necessary and repeat procedures.
3. Check and adjust anti-scalp wheels:
NOTE: Anti-scalp wheel are not designed to contact
the ground during normal operations.
• Lower the deck to the desired height of cut.
• Check that all the anti-scalp wheels are in the
located in the range for your height of cut. If
adjustment is necessary, continue below.

to correct range (G) and reinstall hardware.

All B & M Series Decks
Blades
1. Check and adjust deck lift spring tension, (B and M
Series only) for optimal operator comfort:
NOTE: Deck lift spring tension is adjusted at the
Factory. If the effort to raise the deck is too high or
the deck floats while mowing, adjust the tension
(customer discretion).
High Lift Blade
• Best cut quality
• Best for side discharge performance

Standard Lift Blade
• Less airflow
• Reduced power consumption, discharge
performance, and deck shell wear
• Turn locknut (A) clockwise to increase tension.
• Turn locknut counter-clockwise to decrease
tension.
NOTE: Machines equipped with MCS will need to
have spring tension increased. Operation Manual lists
nominal specifications for spring tension by deck size
and with / without MCS.
Low Lift Blade
• Best for dry/sandy conditions
Mulch / MOD Blade
• Recommended when a mulch kit is installed
• Reduced blade lift and side-discharge performance

Engine running, operator in seat and park brake
unlocked.
1. Raise mower deck and set HOC knob to desired
height.
2. Set throttle lever (A) to between ½ and ¾ fast
position.
3. Lower deck.
4. Firmly pull PTO knob (B) up fully to engage
mower.
5. Set throttle lever to the fast position.
6. Move both control levers inward from the neutral
lock position.
7. Gradually push the control levers forward to begin
forward motion.
NOTE: Mower should not be engaged while in grass.
8. Push PTO knob down to disengage mower.
NOTE: On R Series models, the mower may also be
disengaged by pushing the PTO shut-off button (C)
located in the right control lever. If this button is
pushed, the PTO knob on the control panel must be
cycled to re-engage the mower.
B
1. To lock deck into transport position:
• Raise mower deck fully using foot pedal (A).
• Turn transport lock knob (B) on control panel
counter-clockwise to the locked position and
release the foot pedal.
2. To unlock deck out of transport position:
• Raise mower deck fully using foot pedal.
• Turn transport lock knob clockwise to the
unlocked position and release the foot pedal.
NOTE: The transport lock function is designed to give
the maximum ground clearance when the machine
is moved between work sites. It is not intended to be
used while mowing.
B and M Series - Setting HOC
1. To set HOC:
• Raise mower deck fully using foot pedal.
• Turn HOC knob (C) on control panel to the desired
height and release the foot pedal.

NOTE: Engine must be running to operate the deck
lift system.
1. To lock the deck into transport position:
• Raise the mower deck fully by pushing down and
holding the deck lift button (A) in the left control
lever.
NOTE: Machine has safety feature that automatically
lowers the deck if the button is depressed for more
than 12 seconds.
• Turn transport lock knob (B) on control panel
counter-clockwise to the locked position and
release the button.
2. To unlock deck out of transport position:
• Raise the mower deck fully by pushing down and
holding the black button in the left control lever.
NOTE: Machine has safety feature that automatically
lowers the deck if the button is depressed for more
than 12 seconds.
• Turn transport lock knob clockwise to the
unlocked position and release the button.

1. To move the left drive wheel, gradually push or pull
the control lever (A).
2. To move the right drive wheel, gradually push or
pull the control lever (B).
3. Move both control levers in any combination to
achieve the desired speed and direction.
4. To stop the machine, move the control levers back
to the neutral position or engage the park brake.
5. To reduce tire scuffing in turns, always slow down
and gradually push / pull control levers.
1. To lock the park brake:
• Pull upward on the park brake lever (A).
NOTE: Engaging the park brake will automatically
return the control levers to the neutral position.
2. To unlock the park brake:
• Pull upward on the park brake lever, press in the
button (B) and fully lower the lever.
R Series – Engage / Disengage Park Brake

NOTE: To reduce turn scuffing when changing
directions; Slow Down. In sharp or zero-radius your
inside wheel should still be rotating. Avoid allowing
the inside wheel to pivot without some rotation.

• Push the brake pedal (A) down fully.
NOTE: Engaging the park brake will automatically
return the control levers to the neutral position.

• Press the park brake release (B) by either sliding
your foot in a downward motion across the pedal
and release or using your heel.

1. To move the machine by hand:
• Pull both transmission bypass levers (A) towards
the front of the machine.
• Unlock and lower the seat.
• Push the machine to desired location.

1. Stand on side of machine and lift seat.
2. Slide seat rod (A) through cutout (B) in frame.
3. Set the seat rod into the lower section of the
cutout.
4. Lowering is performed in reverse order.
IMPORTANT: Do not push or pull the machine with
another vehicle.

Diagnostics – M and R Series

Diagnostic Indicator Lights
On-board Diagnostics:
All “M” and “R” Series ZTrak’s use a VCU (Vehicle
Control Unit) allowing on-board vehicle diagnostics to
assist in troubleshooting.
There are two different VCU’s depending on the series:
• “Basic” VCU’s are used on all “M” Series.
• “Extended” VCU’s are used on all “R” Series.
“Extended” VCU’s incorporate comfort and
convenience diagnostics as well as engine oil
pressure input.
• If a malfunction exists, the VCU will blink out
codes to the VDL (vehicle diagnostic light) on the
instrument cluster.
Both “Basic” and “Extended” VCU’s display two types
of codes to the VDL:
DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) check:
• Safety Interlock Violations
• Electrical System Real Time Faults
DTMC’s (Diagnostic Test Mode Codes) check:
• Integrity of the switches, sensors, wiring and VCU
hardware.

Vehicle Diagnostic Light – VDL (A)
Vehicle DTC’s will be displayed when the VCU does
not see the correct and/or desired inputs to start the
engine, engage or run the PTO, or the operator leaves
the seat with the engine running.
Engine Diagnostic Indicator Light – EDL (B)
(EFI Models only)
• EFI Models also use both a VCU and a ECU (Engine
Control Unit).
• Light will be on if active diagnostic code(s) are
present.
NOTE: See your authorized John Deere Dealership if
the EDL is on.
Engine Oil Pressure Indicator Light (C)
• Light will be on if engine oil pressure is low.

Vehicle DTMC Information
DTMC’s are displayed by entering the Diagnostic Test Mode. Before entering the Diagnostic Test Mode, it is
best to turn off all switch INPUTS (i.e., brake not locked, PTO switch not in the engaged position, operator not
in seat, etc.). Once all the INPUTS are off, the operator can enter the Diagnostic Test Mode by cycling the key
switch quickly from OFF to RUN exactly three times. On the third cycle leave the key in the RUN position.
Upon entering the Diagnostic Test Mode, the vehicle control unit will perform an automatic diagnostic check. If
there are no system faults and no inputs detected, the display should flash a 1-1 Code.
Instructions on how to remove the Fault/Input Codes in order to achieve a 1-1 Code:

Operating Tips – Safe Operation
on Slopes
Operate machine with extreme caution on hills,
slopes, and rough terrain to avoid losing traction
and minimize rollover risk. Mowing sites should
be carefully surveyed to assure slopes are safe for
machine operation. Consider moisture and turf
conditions. Wet slopes present significantly higher
risk even though they may have been mowed
successfully before. Look for dips and holes along
the slope that could change the angle of vehicle
operation.
Determining Safe Slope Angles:
1. Lay straight piece of sturdy lumber 4 ft (1.2 m)
long on slope.
2. Measure slope angle with angle indicator or
protractor level.
3. Repeat procedure at several points on same slope.
• Never mow or operate machine on slope angles
greater than 20°.
• Exceeding the maximum recommended slope
angle of 20° increases the risk of rollover
accidents that can result in serious injury or
death.
• Always consider potential turf conditions and
slope angles when determining the risk of loss-ofcontrol and tip-over accidents.
• On slope angles of 10° or less the risk of rollover is
low, but as the slope angle increases to the John
Deere recommended maximum of 20° the risk
increases to a moderate level.
When Operating on Slope
• Wear seat belt when operating machine with the
ROPS in the UP position.
• Keep tires properly inflated. Improper pressure
can cause machine to lose traction and become
unstable on slopes.
• Mowing sites should be surveyed to identify
slopes safe for machine operation. Consider
potential turf conditions, dips, and holes along
with slope angles when determining a safe slope.
• If machine is operated on a steep slope, rollover
can occur before tires lose traction.
• When possible, mow across a hill rather than up

• Decrease speed and use caution when making
turns and when changing directions on slopes.
Sudden changes in speed or direction could cause
machine to roll over.
• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches,
embankments, or bodies of water. Machine could
suddenly roll over if wheel goes over edge or edge
caves in. Leave a safety area between machine
and any hazard.
• Use caution when operating machine on wet or
loose turf. Tires may lose traction.
• Use lower speeds when mowing and operating on
slopes. Decrease speed as slope angle increases.

NOTE: Filling the fuel tank reduces the amount of
air in the fuel tank and helps reduce deterioration of
fuel.
□□ If you have been using “Stabilized Fuel,” add
stabilized fuel to tank until the tank is full. (See your Operator Manual for specific procedure.)
