I am very excited about 2 upcoming events, the
Commodores Ball on April 2nd and STP hosting a
presentation by Charlie Enright on March 24th.
Invitations for the ball will be going out this week
and you can sign up on our website or by calling
the club. The event is limited to 120 with a
wonderful meal being prepared by Blue Water
Grill and the music of a BYC favorite, Chris Fitz
Band. I am looking forward to a fun evening.
March is also busy with STP registration opening
on Monday, March 7th and a food and wine
paring on Thursday March 10th.

March has arrived which means that registration for STP is about to begin. This year, registration will go
live on Monday, March 7 at 5:00 pm. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis. Members signing
up for the full season receive priority until March 21, 2015. Please visit the following link for all registration

Please note for parents of sailors who will be registering for the Opti Beginner classes, please note that
the program will be returning to the traditional Opti beginner format from years past for the 2016 season
to accommodate the needs of our membership. When registering your sailor for the beginner course,
you may sign up for any of the four sessions.
STP Winter Lecture Series:
Thursday, March 24 at 7:00pm, Charlie Enright (Skipper of Team Alvimedica in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean
Race) and John Mollicone (Brown University Head Sailing Coach) will speak about their tremendously
successful collegiate and professional sailing careers. Both of these outstanding sailors learned to sail
right here in Narragansett Bay! Please help us to welcome these honored guests to the Club and join us
for this fun (and free) event.
The Committee is busy preparing for another great season and is looking ahead to lesson planning and
boat preparation. We look forward to providing a safe and fun program that allows all children to develop
a love for sailing.

On Friday, February 12 the Historian Dinner was held. Jean MacIntyre, our Club Historian, shared
pictures and stories of the storm and its effect on the Barrington Yacht Club and the rest of Rhode
Island.
Guest chefs Deb Thurston, Brenda Migliaccio, Michelle Hamilton and Carroll Garland served a delicious
shrimp scampi dinner on Friday Feb 18th.
The Annual Blizzard Brunch was held on Sunday February 28th. A delicious breakfast brunch with
served to members and their families!!
The next guest chef will be Friday March 4th, Rob and Brenda Migliaccio will be cooking spaghetti and
clam sauce for members and guests.
The always popular Wine Pairing Dinner is scheduled for Thursday March 10th. The reservation link is
on the BYC website under “What’s new.”
Blue Water Grille Friday night club menu continues to be a hit! Bring family, friends, co-workers; the
club night is open to members and guests! Come and enjoy a delicious dinner and drinks, it’s a fun way
to celebrate family events and casual get together after a long work week.

The Barrington Yacht Club has a longstanding tradition of supporting winter sailing. This has been well
documented in multiple publications and it is a great honor to work with the Barrington Frostbite
Sunfish Fleet #155 to coordinate such an amazing series. You are the definition of diehard sailors! For full results please click here.
Given the mild conditions as of late, I hope an early spring will prompt many of those with Sunfish
lying in the backyard to come out for some early season racing. The spring frostbite series kicks off
Sunday, March 6th and will run until May 1st. If you are interested, please see the BYC website under
racing for more information and notice of race.
The Race Committee is hard at work coordinating the rest of the 2016 season. The Club calendar has
posted many of the dates for the BYC regattas. The Race Committee will also support regattas
throughout the bay. If you want to participate in racing or have interest in joining the Race Committee,
please feel free to contact me. Please see the website and weekly eblast for the most up-to-date
information.

What’s in a Name?

Cepheus is a 2003 Quest 33S, built by one of our own club members Barrett Holby, designed by local yacht
architect Rodger Martin, rigged by Hall Rigging, line engineered by member Steve Parola, and sails built by our
very own Steve Thurston. I feel very fortunate to have this team behind the boat that has taken my family and best
friends throughout out local waters and out to Bermuda. I love sailing at night under the stars… that is my happy
place.
One of my closest friends, a sister to me, Laura Sudarsky owned “Cassiopeia”, a Beneteau 42s7, with whom I
have raced and navigated for to Bermuda 4 times. Laura is like family and Cepheus got its name as a kinship to
Cassiopeia as they are both constellations in the northern sky.
My favorite Cassiopeia story is of winning first in class and second in fleet in the 2005 Bermuda race and missing
overall first place in fleet by 1 minute and 57 seconds corrected! The boat that got us finished a day later. Of the
10 Bermuda races I have done, that and the 2014 race (crewed by a full Barrington crew), have been the greatest.
As mythology goes:
Cepheus is a constellation and King of Aethiopia in Greek mythology and remains one of the 88 modern
constellations. Cepheus was married to Cassiopeia and is father to Andromeda, both of whom are immortalized
as modern day constellations.
Cassiopeia boasted that her daughter Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids, the nymph-daughters of
the sea god Nereus, who complained to Poseidon (the ruling god of the sea upon the kingdom of Ethiopia).
Poseidon directed the sea monster Cetus to destroy the kingdom of Aethiopia and in trying to save their kingdom,
Cepheus and Cassiopeia were forced to sacrifice their daughter.
Accordingly, Andromeda was chained to a rock at the sea's edge and left there to await the sea monster Cetus.
Perseus, the hero who killed Medusa and severed her head, arrived in time and killed Cetus by using Medusa’s
head turning him to stone and ultimately became her husband, their son Perseus eventually became king.
Since Poseidon thought that Cassiopeia should not escape punishment, he placed her in the heavens tied to a
chair in such a position that, as she circles the celestial pole in her throne, she is upside-down half the time next
to Cepheus and the other half next to him.
Sailing by the stars is among the most amazing
things I have ever experienced; it is something I wish
to share with anyone that would like to experience it.
Cepheus is a bright and stable constellation and it’s
nice to see when you are sailing a few hundred miles
offshore, you feel right at home.
