FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 20, 2015
Reflection
A Word from Our Pastor
Fr. Ron Weissbeck
“Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste.”
What was the rush? Why did Mary go quickly to visit her
cousins Elizabeth and Zechariah? It’s hard to know
exactly what her purpose was, but one thing is clear: Mary
and Elizabeth shared a special connection. Perhaps Mary
was anxious to be in the company of someone who could
understand her unusual situation.
At this point, Mary was newly pregnant by the
power of the Holy Spirit. The verses preceding today’s
reading tell us about the appearance of the Angel Gabriel
and Mary’s willingness to become the mother of the
Messiah. Now, this child was already growing within her
womb, but the whole thing was an incredible secret. Who
would believe her? In whom could Mary confide the
unbelievable events that had taken place? We know that at
some point later, Joseph had a vision in a dream that
allowed him to understand. But before that dream came,
he was planning to part ways with Mary. It must have
been during that difficult time that Mary went to see
Elizabeth. And what joy that upon her arrival, Elizabeth
immediately understood. “Blessed is the fruit of your
womb,” Elizabeth cried out. The same Holy Spirit who
conceived Jesus in Mary’s womb enlightened Elizabeth at
this moment. What a consolation this must have been to
Mary.
This story reminds us of the importance of our
own fellowship in the faith. Sharing our spiritual journey
with other believers who are receptive to the Holy Spirit is
meant to be a source of encouragement and strength. We
are not supposed to be in this alone.
As we worship and
celebrate together with our
faith community, may we
share with each other the
real joy of this sacred
season.
My dear family in Christ,
This is one of those years when
Christmas comes towards the end of the week. It allows us
more time to focus on the Fourth Sunday of Advent and
the days before the celebration of Jesus’ birth. The
opposite is when Christmas falls on Monday and the final
week of Advent is the day before; we have a couple of
years before this will occur again.
We have seen violence and terrorist activity, both
globally and nationally, over the last month. What is going
on? Unfortunately, there are individuals and groups that
act out and doing irreparable damage to people and
places. Such news can’t help but touch us all whether it
involves people we know or complete strangers.
We have been focusing on the Advent Season as
preparation for the birth of the Savior. This is not offered
as a distraction, fairy tale, or comfort food. In light of all
that is happening, as bizarre as it is, an
immersion in the birth of the Savior is trust rather than
flight. We believe that the birth of Jesus is not just an
event that happened a long time ago, but a remembrance
that touches our lives. How? When there is chaos,
friction, and violence we are invited to turn to the
commitment of God becoming human and personally
engaged in life’s challenges. That is genuine, if we allow
it.
Let’s start with Elizabeth and Mary. They were
not only open to God but through their “yes” the world
took a turn to grace and peace. We are invited, through
these women, to bring birth anew to our own world. The
celebration of the birth of the Savior is not just a religious
and pious remembrance, it’s the making present here and
now. It’s the action of God that makes sense to the
direction of the world even if there is violence like we have
seen and felt.
Faith is more than religious propositions. Faith, in
light of all the negatives that have impacted us recently,
calls us beyond our security, comfort, and passiveness to
embrace our reality with the mercy of God. This mercy is
made flesh in a birth that is offered to us. We are invited to
live not in the darkness of fear and paralysis but in the
confidence and peace of God continually calling us to life
and not darkness and death.
A special Christmas gift for the parish family
We are a parish family; we belong to St. John
the Baptist. I am inviting every family and
individual who is nourished, spiritually and
ministerially, to include the parish in making a
special gift. Many have responded generously
to the appeals for our Jesse Tree and
Adopt-A-Family programs. As your pastor, I
ask you to consider making a special financial
gift apart from your regular contribution. May the Lord
bless you with peace and joy as the birth of the Savior
touches each and everyone anew.
“And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my
Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of
your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb
leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what
was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

By John Williams
Dear Parishioners,
I am writing this article on December 8th for the
December 20th bulletin, so by the time you read this we
will have completed another successful year with the Jesse
Tree, Adopt-A-Family, and H.O.P.E. programs. As of now
all three programs are up and operating and the Jesse Tree
gifts and Holiday food boxes will be in the hands of our
client families the week of December 14th. Our Food
Bank will be closed the week of December 21st in
observance of the Christmas holiday and will reopen the
following week for normal food deliveries.
We wish to extend thanks to all who participated in
the programs, and for taking their time to help ensure that
many demographics of folks will have something to
receive this Christmas. Thanks to the stalwart crew who
receives, sorts, and distributes gifts to our food bank client
families. Thank you to our representatives that work with
the H.O.P.E. agency so the homeless may have a place to
stay on Christmas Eve and Christmas night, and thanks to
all the families that adopted an entire family for Christmas.
Thank you to the parishioners who picked up scrolls and
purchased gifts for total strangers, and thanks to the folks
that purchased cold weather gear for the homeless. In
addition, thanks to both our in-house volunteers and our
delivery drivers who build our food boxes and deliver
these and the Christmas gifts to the families who turn to us
for help.
God has blessed this generous parish by providing
us with folks who truly express the real meaning of
Christmas to the Longmont Community. God bless you all
for opening your hearts to those in need.
“It is only the giving that makes you, what you are.”
Your Catholic Religious Education News
Hello Parish Family!
The CREED program attended Mass together at the
6:00 p.m. Mass for the Immaculate Conception. What a
wonderful experience being able to worship together with
our students, teachers, and a majority of our program’s
families. At the end of the day, this experience is what it’s
all about...experiencing our faith together as a close
community. I am blessed and honored to work for the
families of this parish. God bless you all this Advent
Adult CREED
Our next Adult CREED will meet on
January 5th in Benedict Hall from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
The topic will be Mercy and Forgiveness by Fr.
Ron. What is Adult CREED? Adult CREED is
Catholic Religious Education for adults! It is a program
designed as a resource for our adult parishioners to learn
more about various aspects of our faith. We offer it
simultaneously with our Tuesday night children’s CREED
program so the parents of our younger students can take
advantage of it if they choose.
Family Prayer Group
Our “Family Prayer Group” will meet on Sunday
January 10th from 9:45-10:15 a.m. in the Chapel. We will
focus on “Baptismal Renewal.” Please join us for some
dedicated time to pray for loved ones, yourself, or some of
the troubles facing our world.

More Good News…
Merry Christmas From Your Parish Staff
Dinner Table Discussion
The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I
proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for
all the people. For today in the city of David a savior
has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this
will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in
swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 20, 2015
JUBILEO EXTRAORDINARIO DE LA
MISERICORDIA ¿DONDE OBTENER LA
INDULGENCIA PLENARIA?
pecado, incluso venial;
- Confiesen sacramentalmente sus pecados;
aplicados a otras personas vivas.
