S e O & R m T o IN Welc Rebecca Knighton Chelsea Leinbach Hello! My name is Chelsea Leinbach. I started with Trillium in 2012 with Community Living. Recently I became the new Program Manager for Family Services/Connections! Over the last 3 years I have enjoyed getting to know everyone and learning new things! In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors exploring Duluth with my dog, Riley, and trying new things; although most of my spare time lately has been taken up by planning my wedding this July! Alex Gibson Hi there! My name is Alex. I recently started Family Services and so far it’s been great! I am a busy guy and I really enjoy being outdoors. I like to go camping, hiking, bowling, and I especially like to golf. Be sure to say “hi” when you see me around! Hi my name is Rebecca! I moved in to the Ivanhoe house in February and I’m having a blast here! My housemates are awesome, and I am enjoying getting to know them. I like to keep busy by attending dance classes and BOLD Choice Theatre. I also work at Northwood’s Children Services. Some of my interests are going shopping, listening to music, participating in community events and volunteering. If you see me around come say “hi”, I like meeting new people. Shanni Johns Hi, my name is Shanni and I started with Trillium in April. I am a mother of two beautiful children and also have a third on the way. I am currently looking for a new place to live, and I am looking forward to settling in and spending more time with my children. If you see me around, stop and say hi! Samantha S. Hi I’m Samantha and I joined Trillium Works! in April. When I started the program, I started gathering applications immediately. I interviewed at The Little Store Minimart in Moose Lake and was hired a few days later. I really like my new job and enjoy prepping food, frying chicken and making sandwiches for the store to sell. My favorite part is the people I work with and all the customers, who are kind and funny. In my spare time, I enjoy community events and playing with animals. www.trilliumservice.com Alex E. Quarterly Newsletter The Trillium Times Page 3 er oifrern C ’s r o t er eg c St e r Di -by Jennifer Hurst & Jenn In April, the Director Team headed up the North Shore for a couple of days to explore and collaborate on leadership and team building. Time was spent at Grand Superior Lodge and Gooseberry State Park. In these beautiful settings, each Director envisioned what growth and development they wanted to see for Trillium and all of its programs in keeping with the agency’s values. During the retreat, everyone created an individual leadership MAP as a plan for the future. A portion of the MAP looked at individual contributions. It was fun and inspiring to share the strengths that each person brings to their role in the agency and how intertwined we are. On the last day, everyone shared their MAP with the group including steps to take to keep the momentum going and commitments to support each other in reaching the goals described. It was a great team building exercise! Jennifer Steger, Angela Gustafson, Cindy Sanders, Josh Howie, Amanda Burcar-Annis, Brian Annis, Kari Aanenson, Jennifer Hurst, Kate Stark, Shirley Roine Through The Eyes Of: Ellie Hello everyone! My name is Ellie and I am the most recent addition to the office dogs at Trillium Services. I am about 9 months old now and have met many of you. My people have asked me to start writing a column for the newsletter to review office life from my perspective. Familiar Faces I have learned many things since I have started working. Here are just a few: Rachel Hamilton and Steve from Viewcrest. Rachel was promoted to Popcorn Specialist because of her hard work. Way to go Rachel! 1. I like to attend meetings with all of the people who come to the office, but playing during the meetings can sometimes be frowned upon so I have to contain my playing to times in the hallway. If you hear footsteps approaching rapidly slide against a wall. Lee Webb caught a goldfish while fishing! 2. I like anything food related. If you are eating a meal or have treats I am guaranteed to be at your side. 3. The puppy treats get stored in the cabinets behind the front desk and if I ask very nicely Jesse will feed me. Mike Kapalin, Mike Maki, Jesse Miller, Troy Douglas and Brandon Phillips at the NCHA Hockey Tournament in Minneapolis! 4. My best friend is Nelson. When he is at work I abandon my owner and spend the day with him. 5. When people are upset it bothers me. I will cuddle by people to comfort them. Trillium would like to recognize Megan Helmer and Kate Wallin for their continued efforts to end bullying in our region. Their program was recently featured in the Special Connections Newsletter that is put out by the Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative. Great Job Kate and Meg! 6. I like visiting with people at their houses the most! I like to explore new places and consider many homes to be my own. That is it for now. I look forward to writing another article this fall. If you are at the office come by to meet me! Love , Ellie www.trilliumservice.com Quarterly Newsletter integration celebration! The Trillium Times Page 4 Quality Improvement Project -- by Josh Howie For the Trillium Works! Quality Improvement Project we have created a program to support an individual’s transition from school or sheltered employment to community employment. We believe that a comprehensive approach for each person is the best way to prepare them for finding success at employment in their community. We have divided areas of focus into six categories that we believe pave the way to a person’s success in work. Category One: Employer Expectations and Needs Category Five: Volunteering To become acclimated to the needs and expectations of community employment we will support individuals who would benefit from training and development in this area. For many individuals who have never worked or have not worked in a significant period of time, volunteering can be an extremely important part of their transition into working. It provides current work experience to be used on their resume, and builds a positive reference, which is crucial to getting hired. Category Two: Job Search Process One of the most difficult things anyone will ever do is the performance of a job search. Through training and development we can assist individuals that we support to put their best foot forward. Category Three: Individual Career Vision An Individual Career Vision is a person centered planning tool that we developed to help individuals identify what type of career they would like to pursue. Category Six: Development of Work Goals We create a Personal Outcome Plan with everyone that we support and their teams, which identify goals to be worked on for the year. It’s through focus on identified goals that we can assist individuals in learning to maximize their independence. Category Four: Expansion of Occupational Interests Many people that we support have only experienced a small slice of their community and are unaware of the job possibilities that are out there. Expansion of their areas of interest through job shadowing and informational interviews is extremely important to their success in finding an occupation that they would be happy doing. Duluth Thunder Rollers Far Left: Megan Helmer, Molly McGovern Far Right: Kate Wallin Our power soccer team known as the Duluth Thunder Rollers had a chance to participate in a tournament on April 25th in the Amsoil Arena at the Duluth DECC. The DECC along with Courage Kenny Northland hosted three games between four spectacular teams. Two of the teams were from the Twin Cities area, and one team was from Chicago. The main idea in soccer is to be safe, and have fun while playing. We have become better players by listening, using communication, and learning new drill techniques. Power soccer has given us great opportunities to meet new people, be part of a team, and have a lot of fun! - Megan Helmer, Molly McGovern & Kate Wallin Alex Gibson and River Ranch Arena River Ranch Arena in Esko became a volunteer site for Trillium Works! in 2014. River Ranch Manager, Jen Hovde enjoys having Alex Gibson currently volunteering at the Ranch. Members gathered at Jeff, Skip, and Lee’s house and they were gracious hosts for scrapbooking, bird house construction and seed planting for spring gardens. Kenny and Brandon were our main contractors for the bird houses and Jenny, Molly and Lee planted seeds for Skip’s gardens. During scrapbooking, members created awesome pages of Nature Rocks! activities for our scrapbooks and we got together to plan more great upcoming activities. In May the weather didn’t cooperate and we didn’t get to Hartley for a spring hike. However, Nature Rocks! started their annual volunteering at Hartley Nature Center on June 2nd, where we started weed pulling and planting young plants. More than 25 people were able to attend, some who already knew quite a bit about epilepsy and some who were learning for the first time. Lisa shared with us her knowledge about epilepsy, showed us a great video, and talked about ways to get involved. At the end of the presentation, everyone left having a better knowledge about epilepsy! Task Force also attended the 2015 Self-Advocacy Leadership Day on April 18th. We learned a lot more about the rights that we have: “Rights are like tools—they won’t do you any good if you forget you have them.” We also talked a lot about being assertive: “We think for ourselves, ask for what we need, and speak up to protect ourselves and others.” If you haven’t checked out our group yet and would like to be added to our email list to receive updates on upcoming events please contact Danielle or Brianna at the Trillium office: 218-722-5009. -Danielle Gross & Brianna Jelle Left: Lisa Peterson Right: Participants of Lisa Peterson’s presentation on epilepsy Page 6 July 16th, 4pm-5pm - Scrapbooking at Crosley August 1st, 9am - Rise Above Seizures Walk at Denfeld September 27th, 8:30am - Autism Walk at Denfeld See upcoming flyers for event details, or contact Danielle Gross at the Trillium office for more information (218) 722-5009. The bond between the viewer and heroine is strong and lasting. This movie is a remake of the classic animated movie, but yet truly is one of a kind --A+ The Longest Ride (2015) Based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, The Longest Ride centers on the star-crossed love affair between a bullrider and an art student. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship.--B- The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors This quarter I am reviewing The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors which came out on the Wii U last year. You can play as several different characters battling to victory as you defend Hyrule against hordes of enemies from the Zelda universe. This is a very fun game with a lot of potential. It has a lot of replay value and can be played on easy, medium, hard. There is even a hidden difficulty level called hero. Play Adventure Mode to unlock additional characters and collect hard-tofind materials. You can play throughout the all the past games on levels as if it were a multiplayer game but with different objectives and goals. The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks This is a love story about a girl named Sophia and a cowboy named Luke. They met at a rodeo that Sophia went to with her friends where Luke was riding bulls. They started dating and spent a lot of time talking about the rodeo and how he was trying to save his family’s ranch. On the way back to Sophia’s college one snowy night, they helped save a man from a burning car and a basket full of his letters to his now deceased wife. I suggest that everyone reads the books first, then watch the movie! It’s such a wonderful love story that I thoroughly enjoyed! DSP Spring Retreat On March 19, 2015, DSP (Direct Support Professionals) committee held their Spring Retreat at the Rice Lake Town Hall. This retreat focused on adaptive needs and what are some local resources. It was a fun filled day planned along with two guest speakers, Rose Misiewicz and Mark Hanna. Rose, who used to work at Palisade, is one of the coaches for the USA Women’s Sledge hockey team. She did a great presentation on what Sledge hockey is and how it has grown in popularity for individuals who are physically limited and looking for some fierce competition. This sport has been a great outlet for wounded veterans. Rose had brought in some of their equipment for us to check out and shared many stories and videos with us about this increasingly popular sport. Mark Hanna from Courage Kenney Northland shared with us the many different sports that his organization offers our community such as; power soccer, skiing, rock climbing, golfing, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair softball as well as many more. It was great to have Mark come speak to us to share the many sports that are wheelchair and or handicapped accessible. The DSP’s were also involved in a few relay races, some problem solving games, as well as some wonderful team building games. And of course a delicious lunch! I would like to thank all of the DSP’s who attended and made the day a huge success. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the DSP committee members, Kate Stark, Laura Brekke, Kari Nelson, Melissa Weber, Rosalyn Sandeen and Rebeccah Ahlrich. Without all of your hard work and dedication this day would not have been possible. - Angie Sawyer www.trilliumservice.com DSPs participating in team building activities!
