PRESIDENT
B
y the time you read this November issue of the
Heat Exchanger, election ballots will have been
counted and a new slate of officers elected for the
coming two-year term of office. I have enjoyed serving
as President these past two years and feel confident that
the new board members will serve the members of the
Shenandoah Region.
This issue of the Heat Exchanger won’t be in your hot
little hands in time for the Fall Foliage Tour, which is
being held October 31st, starting at G & W. Motorwerkes
in Waynesboro and ending at Devil’s Backbone Brewing
Company. Rest assured that Phil and Susie Audibert will
have another great driving tour mapped out. Come out
for a great time and be sure to RSVP to Sherry if you are
planning to attend so we have a good head count for
the brewery lunch reservation and for coffee and pastries
in the morning.
November 7th will be the final 2010 Porsche’s and
Pastrami at Durty Nelly’s. This final event before the
Holiday Party will include a driving tour to Barboursville
Vineyard for a private tour and tasting. The cost is $7
per person and will include a souvenir wine glass. Be
sure to check the information on the website and RSVP
to Sherry or me, so we can get a good head count for
the tour.
We can look forward to the 2011 Porsche’s and Pastrami
to start again in March.
Sherry Westfall, Jim Condon and I will be attending the
Zone 2 President’s meeting on November 6th. We’ll
find out what other regions in Zone 2 are up to and
report back to you in the December issue.
Bill Sanders
This past October 11th, Columbus Day, the Shenandoah
Region and Mark Cooke’s Euroclassics Porsche held
a driver’s education track day at Virginia International
Raceway. The weather was sensational. Synergy Racing
was there with customer track cars and their trackside
support. New Porsche owners and open top cars ran
in the yellow group following a pace car to get an idea
of the proper line around the track. Instruction from
experienced track drivers was also available. Red and
White groups also had plenty of time on the track. It
was good to see our members enjoying a great day on
the track.
As I write this, I heard on the radio this morning that
Governor McDonnell has authorized 70 mph speed
limits to most of I-81 and much of I-64. New speed
limit signs will be posted by year-end. Now, if he would
just do something about Highway 29! Please remember
that the club has an Alex Smith designed perpetual
trophy, for any member who receives a moving violation
driving to or from a club event!
PCA is holding its annual raffle. This year’s prize is a
2011 911 Carrera GTS, with 408 horsepower and 19”
center-hub RS Spyder wheels. Go to www.pca.org and
print an entry form as the deadline is November 30th,
although the raffle usually sells out beforehand. Only
6,500 tickets will be sold.
Can you identify which Porsche models have had the
“GTS” moniker? Find the answers on pg 23 in this
issue of the Heat Exchanger.

that Virginia truly is “Porsche Country.” While being careful on
these very winding and narrow roads, I am always amazed at
what a great time a Porsche owner can have at legal speeds!!!
The weather turned out to be terrific, in the high 60’s – low 70’s,
so those with their Boxsters and 911 cabriolets drove with their
tops down. With the sunroof down and windows wide open
on my 911S, I was able to enjoy – maybe not quite as much as
those with the convertibles, - the beautiful fall day.
* At the stoplight at the intersection of JPA and Fontaine Avenue
Join your Porsche friends for a relaxed lunch at Durty Nelly’s Pub.
Afterward, Bill Sanders, our president, and his wife Jill will lead us
on a driving tour to Barboursville Vineyards. The 45 to 60 minute
drive will take us onto
Route 22/231 along the eastern side of the Southwest
Mountains in Albemarle County and pass some of the largest
horse and cattle properties in the county, a few dating back to
the late 1700's.
We’ll have a winery tour and tasting at Barboursville Vineyards
that will begin at 3:30 p.m., so our goal is to be at the vineyards
by 3:15 p.m. Bill has arranged for us to have a private tasting
and tour. The cost will be $7 per person and includes the tasting,
a souvenir wine glass, and a tour of the winemaking operation
and facilities. Check out the Barboursville web site at
http://barboursvillewine.net/winery/barb-home.
If you have questions, contact Gary Hagar at (434) 974-7050
or ghagar52@gmail.com or see the Shenandoah web site at

This is our last Porsches & Pastrami of 2010! A great big “Thank
You!” to Gary for hosting two fun-filled years of this event. If
you are interested in putting together a short tour or a points of
interest drive to lead after a Porsches & Pastrami lunch, let Gary
know. He’ll need help arranging tours for next year.
Porsches, Pastrami, a Spirited Drive, and “James Monroe”
By Jim Grichar
Sunday, October 3, 2010, was supposed to be a day of
afternoon showers, but the rain never came. Instead, we got
a terrific lunch at Durty Nelly’s Pub, some absolutely beautiful
autumn weather, a wonderful spirited drive in the country, and a
great tour of James Monroe’s (the fifth President of the United
States) home at nearby Ash Lawn.
Meeting at our usual time – around 1 pm at Durty Nelly’s for
a great lunch, we headed out about an hour later towards the
southwest part of Albemarle county, with Sherry Westfall leading
the way and Jim Condon trailing in his new Cayman S to make
sure none of us got lost. After a brief stretch going west on I-64,
we exited onto the county road system and once again found
7
As we neared James Monroe’s home at Ash Lawn, some of
us got a bit separated and ended up passing the entrance – I
was one of those. After making a quick turnaround, those of us
wanting to see the estate managed to get in on the last guided
tour. It was great seeing James Monroe’s home, with its rare
furnishings, and also to hear a great deal of history that one
never gets in most books.
And I shouldn’t forget
to mention all the great
conversation, including
the swapping of car tips,
that always goes on at
Shenandoah Region PCA
events. All in all, it was an
incredible day. The lesson
is that forget the weather
forecasts – just come out
and plan on having a good
time!!

Business Meeting - October 12, 2010 Hosted at Photoworks!
By Pam Ebinger / Photos on Page 12
Geoff and Mike Kilmer, fellow Shenandoah members and
owners of Photoworks Creative Group, hosted our October 12
meeting at their facility at 700 West Rio Road in Charlottesville.
Gary Hagar of Durty Nelly's Pub prepared an excellent dinner
buffet with pulled pork and chicken BBQ, Brunswick stew, cole
slaw, red-skinned potato salad, deviled eggs, a variety of drinks,
plus carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Goeff
Kilmer gave us all a fascinating tour of Photoworks and all of the
impressive machinery they have to make huge photo prints and
displays. If you want a really big photo of your Porsche, they can
produce it for you!
Bill Sanders - our wonderful President - called the meeting
to order with 14 members in attendance. BJ and Erik Booty
brought future club members, their children Evelyn, Elaine and
Nathan Booty. Following is a recap of what was discussed:
Our 2010 calendar is winding down with only a couple more
events:
- October 23rd – First Settlers is hosting Air and Classic Car Show.
- October 31st – Phil and Susie Audibert’s Fabulous Fall Foliage
Tour starting at G & W Motorwerkes’.
- Sunday, November 7th Porsche’s and Pastrami will be at Dirty
Nelly’s and any of those interested are welcome to follow Bill
Sanders over to the Barboursville Vineyard.
- Sunday, December 5th - The Holiday Dinner is at Mitchie
Tavern. It is always a great event, so don your Holiday Garb and
meet us for an evening of fun, food and drink! The cost is $25.00
a person this year.
Bill showed off the 3rd place award our club won at Parade for
the Heat Exchanger. This was a national award against other
clubs of our size. Thank you to Ben Briggs and Nancy from Print
Source for all of their hard work. Recognition and thanks to Jim
Condon for placing 2nd at Parade for our Website. Jim has done
a fantastic job with our website! Speaking of awards, Bill Sanders
was a second time recipient of the State Trooper Award, and Bob
Duntley regretfully handed over the award for a speeding ticket
to or from an event!
The Goodie Store is getting ready to close effective November
15th. We are looking for a new source for our club merchandise.
(See Ben Briggs’ article on page 4 in regard to the status).
Bill discussed a one time donation of around $1500.00 for
Service Dogs of Virginia. The recipient is a young man in his 20’s
that was paralyzed in a car accident and needs a dog to perform
tasks that most of us take for granted.

One Event, Two Reviews: VIR with Shenandoah and Euroclassics
O
ctober is time for the VIR event we have enjoyed for 8
years now. This year we loaded up for a one day event
to check out the twists and turns of the Virginia International
Raceway. Euroclassics started this event with us many years ago
as a customer appreciation day and an opportunity for our small
club to get on the track.
This year was in my opinion our best as far as the participants
are concerned. We have polished the track touring group and
really opened up the track to get the maximum time for those
who were lucky enough to participate. Let me explain.
The track touring group has always been difficult to manage
and pull off. We run a pace car around the track at highway
speeds, having the group follow closely behind and remaining
safe. You don’t have to wear helmets and you can have a
non-instructor in the car. This slow group, (65MPH) travels the
course and gets to see the race line, the track, and all the corner
workers at a speed that allows the non-racer to take it all in at
low stress level. As you can imagine, adding high performance
cars onto a race track with untrained drivers without helmets
can be very stressful to those of us who watch the safety and
running of the event. This has always been the difficult class
to run because you are giving the members a taste, but not
too much. This year the balance was spot on. We were able
to put a lot more instructors in the cars with the rookies for
free, and we were able to instruct at a lower speed and offer
better communication to those participants who asked for and
needed instruction due to the fact we weren’t wearing helmets.
I personally had 6 different students during the day and I was
on the lower end of the count compared to other instructors. I
was very happy to hear the feedback and interaction with those
new to the event.
We had a lot of first timers and they gained a lot of knowledge
and confidence. My favorite thing was instructing during the
touring group. The pace car and its followers would pass and
we would go out behind them. Because we had an instructor,
we were able to break free and drive the line with specific
instruction. Without the helmets, you could speak and hear
better and really focus on the mechanics of driving the line and
what to expect while going around the full course. This was the
best way to instruct that I have ever been part of in 10 plus
years on the track. The funny thing is that most of our driving
during this time was at 45 MPH. There was at least 2 times that
I pulled in with my student to let the Pace car and group go by
since we were going slower than they were. I laughed at that
because I would have never thought we would enjoy going so
slow around VIR. I highly recommend this approach in future
events due to its rewards for the rookie driver.
Review by Rick Ebinger
Photos on pages 13 and 14
As you can imagine, most of the time spent at VIR was not at
45 MPH. The weather was perfect and we all had a chance to
push our cars to their and our limits. I was able to get some
track time near Emmett Richardson and Jim Condon. I say
near since both walked away from me on course. It was fun
to see how fast they have gotten over the past few years and
really goes to show that practice and track time really makes a
difference. Great job guys! We had few Ferrari Challenge cars
instructing and giving rides and fun was had for all who got
a chance to experience those screamers from the passenger
seat. I can say it now, but we had the safest event ever, with
only a handful of cars even dropping a wheel off course.
I think we had under five spins for the entire day with no
damage. Great job everyone to all those who drove safely and
quickly.
Plug for next year: It was announced that this might be our
last Columbus Day event due to the cost and the numbers.
We had 30 paid drivers and 10 others those instructed and
helped with the event. @ $295 for the day, it sounds like a lot
of money for a track day, but if you figure that the cost to rent
the track alone used to be $10,000 for the full course a few
years ago, you can see the shortfall for the event backer. This
goes to my comment earlier about a small club putting on an
event. We have been very fortunate to have the support and
help of Euroclassics and all that they do for the club, but we
have to partake to really enjoy these opportunities we have at
these unique and great locations. Even though it sounds like
a lot of money for a one day event, I bet you get more track
time and laps in this day than you do usually in a two day
event, if you wish to take it. We let the two race groups warm
up in touring, the instructors got much of their instruction done
during the touring lap, we let people graduate up when they
showed proficiency, and each group that was out, those rules
were followed by the people out on the track at that time. We
had no one uncomfortable and wishing to be moved down in
class, and we had to make sure everyone kept an eye on their
gas gauge as to make sure they didn’t run out of gas. With
30 cars on a track that can handle 60-70 cars at a time, we
had no complaints about trains or slow cars not giving passing
signals. This is a big deal for those who hit the track and have
been caught in the train. No quicker way to ruin a weekend
than that short of a bent car.
In summary, we need to support these big events because of
the cost to put them on. We are lucky to have support and
as long as we can get enough participation we can keep the
costs down and continue to have these great opportunities.
Our next big event that is confirmed is April 9th at Richmond
International Raceway. This is firmed up and we will need

people to come out and play to continue this in the future.
Although it is an autocross, it feels more like a track event
due to course design and what this banked track can offer.
I guarantee you will not regret it if you sign up. Thanks
to all of you who have come out and joined in the fun,
and to all of you who have the cars, but are on the fence.
Come check us out. I had a first time student in a 2010
C4S that I was driving around and we went into turn 3
(NASCAR) slow in and fast out on the line. His comment
was “I did not know my car could do that”. We were going
just a “hair” over 65 MPH. Do you know what your car can
do? Ask yourself that……………………..

Thanks to Mark, Wayne, Alex, Erik and everyone who helps
put this event on. It is very much appreciated.
Review by Alex Smith
T
his may have been one of the best track events at V.I.R. I
have been to in years. Perfect weather, wonderful hosts,
well mannered drivers and excellent volunteer instructors.
None of this would have happened if Mark Cooke and
Euroclassics had not taken the risk to cover the expensive
cost of renting the full course at the 5th best rated track in
North America. Thank you, Mark.
I should never take for granted our own club members. Rick
Ebinger (see Rick’s article on the event on page XX) and Erik
Boodie always run a flawless event. We had an incident free
day and most everyone went home with Euroclassic shirts
and caps and gloves from OG Racing. Burleigh’s Body Shop
(which had no business that day) generously gave a $250
dinner gift certificate to a lucky winner. CDOC gave away a
credit for a new helmet won by our own Jim Condon and
Concours in Richmond owned by Dave Cottrell gave a $250
complete detail job to a fortunate winner…fun on the track
and loads of freebies in the drivers meeting. Synergy Racing
was there in full force with no less than 4 of their 997 based
race cars…thank you Kerrigan.
J
oy Tupper passed on September 30, 2010 at age 89.
She died peacefully in a nursing home in Florida. Joy
was my mother-in-law. When I started dating Gail, (her only
daughter), we did not share much common ground. When I
married Gail, we shared even less. But in later years when I
could afford to buy a few gently used Porsches, Joy took an
interest…in the cars. But we did start to share a common
interest. Joy liked cars and her last car that she actually drove
every day was a pale yellow Cadillac Berlitz coupe.
When Joy moved to Virginia from her hometown of Chicago,
she discovered the Shenandoah Region Porsche Club and
made wonderful new friends like Herb, Phyllis, Weldon, Rick
and Pam. She waited all year for R.P.M. She came to the
Concours, the dinner and even the extremely warm autocross
at Southside Speedway….every year! She was thrilled when
Rick Ebinger named a part of the autocross “Tupper” straight
away. She was a regular and generous sponsor to R.P.M. She
attended the club birthday party at Herb’s one year. She read
the Heat Exchanger and loved seeing the occasional picture
of herself or mention of her name.
What do you get your mother-in-law for Christmas? She loved
Porsche swag and bling. When she went to R.P.M. she was
always decked out with Porsche earrings, necklaces, pocketbook
and even her scooter had a Porsche crest on the basket.
When Synergy Racing was active in the Grand American Rolex
Series, she would check in with her grandson Kerrigan Smith
before, during and after the race to get the details.
Our club has lost a real enthusiast, fan, supporter and friend.
Gail and I thank the good folks of the Shenandoah Club for
befriending and taking Joy in…..she loved “The Club”. She will
be missed….and my, how she would have loved this article.
By late in the day, (I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before)
the only car on the track (advanced group) was Jim Condon
– he had the whole track to himself! Now that is generous

lushed with the success of the Montpelier/P.M. Winery/
Bavarian Chef tour he organized in the spring, PCA
Shenandoah member Dan Graff put together a more
ambitious road trip to the Oct. 1-2 Petit LeMans race weekend
at Road Atlanta.
Not having the time to make it a full-fledged PCA event, Graff
leaked details of the four-state jaunt at the annual picnic, by
e-mails and on our club blog. Six members, one guest and
five cars answered the call as the remnants of a hurricane
lashed Central Virginia Sept 30. Steve McCaughan, Keith Welty,
Bates McLain (and co-pilot Baten Szydlowski), and yours truly
managed to find Chez Graff at dawn in the Fluvanna County
wilderness. Deane Parker got lost in his Boxter S, but caught
up to the group later on.
Off we went, led by Dan’s 944 turbo, Bates’ 944, Steve’s
Cayman, and my most recent acquisition, an unmentionable
British car, with Welty and I aboard. (Keith left his Boxter at
home and I did the same with my 944.) We stopped only for
gas and rest breaks in order to arrive at the BMW factory and
car museum in Spartanburg, S.C., which allowed us ample

time for viewing what that other German marque has been up
to for the past 80 years or so.
Our loose group roosted in Commerce, GA, a collection of
hotels and barbecue pits some 20 miles or so from Road
Atlanta. Everybody checked in and then headed to the track for
Thursday’s night practice. Friday morning Keith and I detoured
to Madison, GA, to take in the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum
before joining the rest of the group for qualifying at the track.
(This eclectic collection boasts more Isettas, Messerschmidts,
Goggomobiles, etc., than you’d see anywhere else in the
world.) Consequently, we missed the Porsche parade lap, but

a Jaguar would have been transporta non grata anyway.
The Porsheplatz, overlooking turn 10a, and 10b was well
stocked with bottled water, soft drinks, posters, and Porsche
trinkets. The Porsche corral was filled to overflowing with
Stuttgart’s best.
Flying Lizard GT drivers Pat Long, Marc Lieb, Joerg Bergmeister,
Marco Holzer and Darren Law came by after qualifying and
filled in the PCA members on the team’s strategy the next day
to win the ALMS GT Drivers Championship (which they did)
and Manufacturers Championship (which, alas, they didn’t).
This was my third Porscheplatz of the year and the lesser
marques’ clubs (Ferrari, Corvette, BMW and Jaguar) do not
come close to measuring up when it comes to hospitality.
PCA Shenandoah member Kenny Shreves (of Werkstatt in
Charlottesville), who spins wrenches for the Flying Lizard
team, got us beyond the paddock barriers Friday evening for a
photo op and close look at the Porsche 911 GT3R Hybrid. This
glimpse into racing’s future made its American
debut at Road Atlanta and finished a solid 18th
overall the next day.
The Porsche Spyder of Klaus Grad, Sacha Maasen and Lucas
Luhr finished second in P2 category, though well down from
the class-winning Hycroft racing HPD.
The overall race winners and first and second in the P1
category were the Peugeot Diesels, which had the legs on the
Audi diesels this year.
I must remember to thank our Steve M. for renting a golf cart
at the track and taking the rest of us to the far corners and
back. I had hiked over to turn 6 during the race, nearly falling
down a ravine in the process (before I even drank a beer, by
the way) So I was overjoyed to see him come along in his
rear-engine, air-cooled cart (how Porsche-like).
We all had different agendas returning to Virginia after the
race, but I hear everybody made it in good shape. Each of our
cars covered close to the Petit LeMans race distance of 1,000
miles, albeit in two easy installments.
During the race Saturday, there was a
presentation of on the Cayenne Hybrid at the
Porscheplatz and PCA Shenandoah member
McLain must have listened, because he won a
Porsche umbrella for being able to describe how
that newfangled technology actually works.
You probably watched some of the race itself on
SPEED, but, for the record, Flying Lizard No. 45
finished fifth in GT, and the No. 44 was ninth,
clinching the 2010 ALMS drivers' championship
for Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long in the
No. 45. The No. 45 also took the 2010 Michelin
GREEN X Challenge title.
Shenandoah PCA member Kenny Shreves of Charlottesville, a Flying Lizard Team
mechanic, is on his back peering up into the innards of Porsche Number 45

Psycho Billy.
The story of my 911S Hotrod - Part II – The build
I
moved to Virginia 15 years ago. One of the first local
car culture tidbits I discovered is that many people
in the area have names for their cars. Black Widow,
Lanna, Chester, Kermit, Emme, Evelyn, and so on. The
interpretation of this tradition that was told to me is
that, yes, cars have names and you should allow other
people to name your car. Umm....ok.
by Scott Kaefer
I'm not much of a stock car guy. I can't keep well
enough alone. Here's the same car a few weeks after I
purchased it.
My 1977 911S hotrod is named Psycho Billy the 3rd.
Or PB3 for short. Local Porsche fanatic Rick V provided
the name. Of course he coined the name from Johnny
Cash and his Psycho Billy Cadillac.
At this early stage of the project I had installed the
following:
• '80 930 metal rear flares. Modified of course.
• Fiberglass longhood ST/RSR fenders, hood,
bumpers, ducktail, and 935 mirror.
Part II of this article will be picture intensive. Here goes!
My 1977 911S as purchased with 88K miles. Originally
ordered in the USA and picked up at the Porsche factory
by its new owner. He toured Europe on a short vacation
then brought the future Psycho Billy home.
• 930 9x16 Fuchs wheels in the front, custom 11x17
Fuchs wheels in the rear.
• '86 euro-spec 3.2 engine and 915 transmission
with LSD.
• Stiffer rear torsion bars, rear monoballs, and Bilstein
Sport shocks.
• 930S steering wheel, Recaro SRD seats, stereo
delete, lightweight door panels.
Unlike Johnny Cash and his Cadillac, my Porsche was
created from a handful of local 911 donor cars and
online parts sources. Many parts were provided from a
wrecked '85 Carrera targa, an '86 Carrera coupe, and my
rusty '71 coupe. Reduce, reuse, and recycle folks!

The next phase of the project involved prepping the car
to be painted. What this really means is hundreds of
hours of metal and fiberglass work. The whole project
took about a year of working on average 1-3 hours every
day on the car from start to “finish”. I use quotes around
the word finish because to someone like me they're
never really finished.
Here I'm doing the initial fitting of the rear 930 flares.
Note the use of an OEM 930 rear flare extension to help
with placement. At this point the flares were simply
attached using sheet metal screws.

prepping and finishing flares.
Now onto the doors. Here I'm deleting the '77 door
mirror in favor of a 935 mirror.
Cutting and tack welding the flare to provide a better fit
between the flare and the chassis. Weld through primer
was used to help minimize oxidation. I also rolled
and pulled the fender lips to increase wheel and tire
clearance.
Here I am stripping the chassis to bare metal in
preparation for fresh paint. Some '77 cars have paint
adhesion issues with the fully galvanized chassis (1977
was the first year of the fully galvanized 911 chassis). In
order to properly repaint my car all the original primer
and paint had to be removed.
Cutting and tack welding the flare to the chassis.
Basically I cut through the flare and the car in 12”
segments using a cutoff wheel. Then ran a series of tack
welds to join the flare to the chassis. Then ground off
the excess to get a smooth finish.
At times I would take a break from metal work and
would spend time working on the other millions of
details it takes to build a hotrod. In this picture the
fiberglass fender rubbing the passenger door.
Success! The flare welded to the car. I now understand
why some shops charge $1k per corner to properly add
flares to a 911. Many, many hours go into properly

Here I'm working on the interior of the car installing a
new headliner. A tip I learned online is to use binder
clips to hold the headliner in place during the stretching
and gluing process.
In this picture I'm making brackets to relocate the drivers
seat towards the centerline of the car to improve weight
distribution and get my sitting position better in line with
the steering wheel. Plus I deleted the seat slider to gain
3/4” of headroom.
Eventually the light at the end of the tunnel was near.

While Tana, my wife, was on maternity leave with
Easton, my son, I also took some time off work. While
Tana and Easton were napping I'd sneak down to the
workshop to work on reassembling the car. Here's the
car back on the road for the first time with a fresh coat
of Grand Prix white paint! Fellow SHN PCA member DL
Lawrence met me for the maiden voyage. DL was a key
participant in my project. Among other things he let me
drive his 911 while my car was down and I needed a
911 fix! Thanks DL!
That's about it for part II of my build article. I hope the
Heat Exchanger readers out there have enjoyed the

pictures and commentary of the build process. Please
keep in mind this car was built as a fun DIY project
in my garage with lots of help of from local Porsche
buddies and friends. PB3 is far from perfect but is
a great example of what can be done by the do-ityourself'ers out there.
Stay tuned for part III of my article. In the final
installment I'll discuss what it's like driving PB3, what
future plans I have for the car, and of course pictures
from various events we've been attending with PB3.
