I looked up the meaning of it. And found lots of different descriptions. There’s a healthy weight, a healthy outlook, a healthy diet, a healthy attitude, a healthy appetite, a healthy balance, and a healthy lifestyle. I know what it’s like to be on the other side of “healthy.” Let’s call it the dark side, the near-death experience. Knowing that if I don’t have my health, nothing else matters. Now, I’m a firm believer in a healthy balance. Look, if I knew the answer to what makes you healthy, it’d be like playing the lottery every week, and winning! What I’m saying to you is live your life, have fun, with no remorse and no regrets. It’s yours and don’t take that for granted. I’m no Buddha; I’m not your priest, or even your mirror. I’m Frenchie, and right now, I’m giving you an order. Get up and go to your cellar, your fridge, or the back of your closet--wherever you’ve been keeping that bottle of champagne for that special occasion. Now open it, don’t be scared, pour it in your glass, say Cheers! and don’t think twice. That’s my recipe for health. Strawberries Dipped in Chocolate 2 ounces really good dark chocolate 12 strawberries Melt chocolate in a double boiler. Stir until melted. Dip strawberries in the melted chocolate. Well now the phrase can actually be taken literally. Scientific studies have confirmed that the arts can benefit both your mental and physical health. Participation in the arts reduces stress levels; reduces fear and the sense of isolation; has beneficial effects on the immune system; reduces the need for medication and pain-killers; and even shortens hospital stays. Researchers investigating how the arts can help us recover from disease, injury and psychological trauma have measured the natural substances your body produces when you’re listening to music or otherwise exposed to the arts and have found evidence that singing releases substances that serve as the brain’s own natural pain-killers. Art therapy is taken very seriously in the scientific community. “Of all the areas where research has been conducted, the most compelling and exciting art therapy data is emerging in the healthcare arena.” (Malachiodi, Cathy. “Arts and Health” Pyschology Today. Feb, 27, 2013 http://www.psychologytoday. com/blog/the-healing-arts/201302/yes-virginia-there-issome-art-therapy-research.) Numerous studies underscore the significance of art therapy in reducing symptoms associated with asthma, depression, anxiety, fatigue and even cancer. Considering basic meditation, which is what science has been studying, is the first stage in the traditional system of personal development. Can you imagine how potent stage two and three must be? I am often asked, “Why meditate?” Have you ever heard a child ask, “Why save?” Or an adult ask, “Why invest?” These questions all come from the same place, a place that does not understand yet. The one who does not understand the value of a little sacrifice “now” for a better “later”. Like your IRA or your education, meditation is an investment in your future self. Is the you of today willing to invest in the you of tomorrow? I think you are worth it! Meditation is not an end in its self, it is a beginning. It is like learning the scales on an instrument so we can make music. Or, like learning to count before learning math, algebra, and trigonometry so we can engineer precisely. We meditate to become more human, to love more completely, to be more compassionate, to know more Truth, to have more mercy. To explore the benefits of meditation, Bhakti Wellness Center offers courses (such as Introduction to Meditation, Emotional Intelligence and Yoga Theory) and services (such as Therapeutic Massage, Bodywork, Naturopathy Medicine and Health Coaching). It began with the iron girders of Ground Zero being masked out in tape, but it didn’t work. So I proceeded painting with spontaneous, upward-sweeping strokes, resulting in a painting that’s as if, symbolically, the souls of the dead wanted to rise above the shell of Ground Zero to soar freely.” “A Time to Heal” by Marcia Soderman, 94 x 42 inches, acrylic on birchboard, September 2002 To see more work by Marcia Soderman go online to www.marciasoderman.com Work by artist Bonnie Van Moorlehem “My painting ‘Healing From The Core’ addresses when someone you love dies, grief rips your inner core and you need to heal from within before you can obtain the physical appearance of healing. I based this painting on a Hebrew story I read once. It said that when someone dies they ripped their clothes in shreds to display their grief. When they worked through their grief, they sewed the torn clothing back together again to represent they had healed. The seams are now worn on the outside to represent the grief they had endured and healed from but they still will never be the same again. He earned a living by doing decorative stone work and remained in that field for almost twenty years before he again decided to pursue an artistic career. Rodin met Rose Beuret, a seamstress who became his life companion, in 1864, although he did not marry her until a few weeks before her death in February 1917. They had one child together, a son. It wasn’t until a visit to Italy in 1875 that Rodin began to develop his own style as a sculptor. Johnson, L & J Graphics If every picture tells a story, make sure your picture tells the right story. If you have an opportunity to promote your business, artwork or event in a publication, it is important that you follow the right steps to ensure that your image looks its best. Computer monitors use a smaller number of dots to depict tone, so the image resolution for web doesn’t need to be as high as for print. In short, web images are not a substitute for print images (see examples below). Which Format Do I Need? Each format has a specific use. File extension Web only GIF .gif X JPEG* .jpg Color, Color, Color TIFF* .tif Image color formula is key. *For print, the size (height x width and dpi) is crucial. Knowing what images to use is critical. Just as a painter uses a specific brush for a technique, image format is specific to how the image is finally used. For web, images are viewed on a computer or laptop screen where colors are depicted using three primary colors: red, green and blue. This is referred to as RGB. Decades ago, printers used physical screens with specific dot patterns to create tones. (Hence the term “dots per inch” or dpi.) Smoother tones require more dots per inch. This is known as resolution, and even with digital printing this is important. Print only X X Publications provide specifications for images artists submit. Do talk about who you help: the people in your target market, your ideal client, the folks you make a difference for. My company helps business professionals become better storytellers. 2) Don’t reel off too many numbers and statistics. That’s not a story. Do talk about what your clients experience when they work with you, as they go from challenge to success. Organizations bring us in when they are looking to grow, and they recognize (sometimes with frustration) that their own team members aren’t representing them the way they could. So we work with leaders to inspire their team members to embrace the idea of being an Ambassador of the organization, and then we work with team members to tell their organization’s story. We know we’re done when team members are excited to have grown in their professional role, and leaders are excited to see business grow as a result of what their team is doing. 3) Don’t limit it just to dry information. Include feeling language. Talk about how your clients feel when they need you the most, and when you’ve taken them where they want to go. by Pete Machalek, partner of SagePresence So, what’s your story? Located in Edina, La Petite Parfumerie is a haven for fragrance connoisseurs. Diane agreed to share some common myths about perfume: 1) A “Signature Scent” makes me unique and sophisticated. A person wearing the same scent, especially a synthetic scent, becomes so used to the smell that they don’t notice it anymore, even though it builds up on their clothes. “You won’t smell it yourself but everyone else will.” Diane explains. “It’s better have to a perfume wardrobe. A variety of scents to fit your variety of experiences and moods.” 2) It doesn’t matter what type of perfume I wear as long as I love the way it smells on me. Not necessarily so. If you are purchasing synthetic scents as opposed to the more natural scents available then you will most likely find that the initially pleasant fragrance will gradually change and may actually become unpleasant. He is also an avid bicyclist and often gets inspirations for his paintings from sojourns into the Western Wisconsin and Minnesota roadways. “The Reason” The earliest part of his career was spent producing handpainted clothing, so he is no stranger to finding canvases in atypical places. Thus, the brush-painted bicycle emerged some ten years ago. Since then, Rochester has produced many themed bicycles as well as abstract paintings and specialty landscapes from the cyclist’s point of view to accompany them. Last summer, he participated in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ “Bicycle Night” and showed some of his creations. These caught the eye of MIA staff, and he was asked to produce a one-of-a-kind painted bike to augment the Italian Fashion 1945-Present exhibit. Rochester selected designs from famed Italian clothing designer, Emilio Pucci to produce the “Pucci Bike”. Rochester is a nationally-known painter, who has been featured in many publications and is collected internationally. His “Tour d’Art” bicycle art show is planning a European tour. Each year we search for art all over the United States, looking for that special, unique “something” that only talented, dedicated and inspired artists can provide. As always, our goal is to bring our readers artists who excel in their work and art that we believe our readers will truly appreciate. We look for art that is visually beautiful, emotionally or spiritually provocative and/or intellectually challenging. Because we always have the reader in mind we do also consider the accessibility of the artists and the art. Therefore we also look for art that we believe the viewer will want to hang in their home or their place of business; art that can be seen on a website, and artists that can be reached. I have learned, after doing this for four years now, that we are a country filled with talented artists and remarkable art. Each artist has their own story and while their artistic ability is impressive, they are not simply defined by their art. I encourage you to visit their websites, enjoy their art and read their bios and statements. Some of them have stories as fascinating as their art. I have tried to present similarly earnest, but basically inaccurate, renderings of animals by using humor, irony and a surrealistic sensibility that is not available to the scientist. In this way I attempt to address the sensation of Wonder, the conflict between the Real and the Imaginary, and why we accept certain things as True.” Chapman’s work can be found in various collections around the world, including those of Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Denver Children’s Hospital, and the U.S. Embassies in Myanmar (Burma) and Nairobi, Kenya. 52 | Exploring Art “Species from the Undiscovered Continent”, acrylic on panel, 48 x 72 inches www.tctosca.com American Artists Dianna Cates Dunn Colorado Artist of the Year dcddesignllc@gmail.com www.diannacatesdunn.com Dianna Cates Dunn was born in Ogden, Utah back when God was a little girl. Her oil paintings convey the beauty and meaning inherent in an arrangement of objects, figures and nature. “I want to share the beauty of color, sumptuous textures and the way light falls on an object or face.” She paints fabrics to divide the outdoor skies and indoor objects within the same picture. “Contemporary, yet oddly familiar, I think of these as painted meditations on how we relate to nature, to ourselves and to those around us.” Jean lived and painted in Central America and Israel, before receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree at New Mexico State. An award-winning artist, her work is in collections worldwide. She is represented by Unsettled Gallery, Las Cruces, NM. “Green Curtain”, 36 x 30 inches, oil on canvas Nancy Maloney New York Artist of the Year 212.684.5493 nmaloney104@gmail.com NancyMaloneyFineArt.com Nancy Maloney has lived all her life in Manhattan, the heart of the art scene in New York City. She has studied at the renowned Art Students League using Old Masters techniques in her still life paintings. Nancy has participated in juried exhibits with the American Artists Professional League, the Audubon Society and others. She has exhibited at the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts Club, both prestigious clubs in Manhattan. Her paintings are in collections throughout the Northeast, Florida and Nevada. Since acquiring a Long Island home, Nancy has been able to observe the ocean, the waves and the wading birds along the shore. She is enthralled with the beautiful egrets and tries to capture their graceful form and movement in her paintings. “Seven Pears”, 11 x 14 inches, oil 56 | Exploring Art www.tctosca.com American Artists Louise W. Her work has been seen branding numerous commercial products, and covers of prize lists, books, racing programs and publications. She has served on several boards, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the American Academy of Equine Art, and the Collector’s Committee of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Her colorful, creative style is instantly recognizable. Her forty-year journey as an artist has enabled her to develop a fully unique painting technique that reflects her Iraqi cultural heritage. Her bold, bright primary colors reflect a scholarly comprehension of Iraqi rural culture. Each of her works incorporates local legend projected in bright colors over a dark background. In 1977, May was awarded a solo exhibition in the prestigious Alwaya Club in Baghdad. She also participated in Iraqi, middle-eastern, European, and American group art exhibitions. Currently she paints at home in Virginia in the USA. www.tctosca.com “Chess Redux”, 11 x 14 inches, acrylic, gouache, and water colors on black cardboard Exploring Art | 57 Free and Almost Free HIR: Mixed Blood Theater HAPGOOD | Monday, April 20, 2015, 7:30PM Six Elements Company, Minneapolis Pay-what-you-can.
