Palé Hall Hotel brochure (web version)
Welcome from the Harpers
In February 2015, feeling restless and seeking
a new project, we took the drive to North Wales
to see a potential new home. As we drew up
outside Palé we knew this beautiful, if slightly
tired house was going to be part of our lives.
Alan and Angela Harper
I am more than excited to have been hand picked by Alan, Angela
and Michael to lead the team here. Palé Hall, a stunning Victorian
Mansion, is a destination in its own right. As an advocate of
sustainable tourism, I share Alan and Angela’s vision. Our values
are clear, your guest experience is paramount to us. My team and
I look forward to welcoming you, it is our mission to ensure your
stay here will be exceptional in everyway.

We both love entertaining and sharing our
homes. Houses like Palé come alive when they
are full. With encouragement from friends,
including the much missed Joan Reen from
Ynishir Hall, the idea grew and then one of
those strange coincidences happened. Michael
Caines, two Michelin starred chef, T.V. celebrity
and all round nice guy approached us to invest
in his own new venture Lympstone Manor. Alan,
always one to spot an opportunity, invited him
to visit Palé, made him an offer and the rest as
they say is history.
Palé Hall is a luxury hotel, but it is first and
foremost a home, filled with our own furniture,
ornaments and artwork. Palé has become a
very personal journey for us. We welcome you
to our hotel, our home and our dream.
Michael Caines MBE
We hope you have a wonderful stay
Alan & Angela
Standing high above the Dee Valley with
a backdrop of beautiful Welsh hills, Palé
Hall is a Victorian Mansion and bespoke
hotel. Bought by Alan and Angela Harper
in 2015, it was closed for eleven months to
undergo extensive refurbishment. Using
the finest local craftsmen Palé has been
eased gently and sympathetically into
being a fit for purpose luxury hotel. Alan
and Angela have personally overseen the
refurbishment choosing every last detail
themselves. They have created a peaceful
and luxurious retreat, surrounded by
natural beauty, and accompanied by the
finest wines and food.
Palé, now full of the Harpers’ antiques,
artwork and glass, has been described
as flowing like a river from one
room to another and indeed from one
stunning vista to another, It’s essentially
decorated like a warm and welcoming
country house that resonates with the
history of a bygone era. Floor to ceiling
windows, roaring log fires in the winter
make the ground floor reception rooms
the perfect place to relax with a book,
board game or a pre-dinner drink.
One of the UK’s most talented and well-known
chefs, Michael Caines, is ensuring that fine-dining
is at the heart of Palé Hall Hotel.
He will be working alongside our own Head Chef,
Gareth Stevenson to produce seasonal signature
menus, that focus on fantastic local produce, some
from our own gardens, delivered with absolute
professionalism in preparation, presentation and
service.
Caines is one of the most recognisable stars in
the firmament of celebrity chefs. Presenting
My Kitchen Rules, appearing as a judge on TV’s
Masterchef Professionals and and also a regular
contributor to the BBC’s Saturday Morning
Kitchen. In a career spanning more than twenty
years he has gained two coveted Michelin stars
during his tenure as Head Chef at Gidleigh Park
hotel in Devon. He now oversees a select number
of restaurants bearing his name and is realizing
his dream of his own luxury hotel Lympstone
Manor. In 2006 he was awarded an MBE for
his achievements.
The three dining areas at the
manor house will serve, breakfast,
lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
Each has a different look and
feel, The Henry Robertson Dining
Room is grand in every respect,
the theatrically themed Venetian
Room adds drama to the dining
experience and finally the intimate
library complete with original wall
stencilling restored by Angela
Harper herself is the perfect
setting for private dining.
Palé was built in the grand style with no expense spared.
Lavish plasterwork, fireplaces and panelling adorn these
grand airy rooms. You enter Palé through an arched entrance
hall, lovingly stencilled by Alan and Angela themselves,
head through double doors into a truly magnificent grand
hall complete with stained glass ceiling, oak panelling and
a beautiful carved staircase. Palé has three main additional
lounge areas.
The drawing room, is a light filled glorious room, fine
plasterwork and a marble fireplace add grace and elegance
to the space. Filled with beautiful antique furniture
including reupholstered Biedermeier sofas, this room
is perfect to relax in front of the fire, sit by a window
and look over the garden, have afternoon tea or indulge
in one of Alan’s wicked Martinis.
The Seasons Room was designed as a ladies’ boudoir. The
ceiling has a spectacular painted ceiling depicting the four
seasons in bucolic and romantic form and the four elements
in Pre-Raphaelite flowing style. This room is also light filled,
full of antiques and comfortable sofas.
The Library completes the set. This is a cosy warm informal
space with original wall stencils fully restored, this is a
space Queen Victoria would recognise. The bookcases are
lined with Angela’s personal book collection, comfy chairs,
billiards and a mirror tv. Curl up with a book, play a game or
cards, do a jigsaw, it’s a space to relax and forget the world.
In keeping with the owners’ philosophy
Palé hasn’t been over designed or any
formula applied to the decorating.
Instead eighteen bedrooms, all
different have evolved from an original
inspiration. So whether your taste runs
to cool and airy, rich and sensuous
or any variation in between, there
should be a room to suit your taste. On
entering your room, if you feel like
you have wandered into someone’s
beautiful home and you feel that
you are a pampered and cherished
friend coming to stay, then we have
succeeded because, that’s just what
you are.
Smart televisions hidden behind
beautiful mirrors, coffee delivered
to your door because we make it
better than any machine, duvets
and pillows filled with spun silk,
crisp bed linen of the finest quality
and luxurious bath robes await
your arrival. Whether you have
chosen one of our Classic rooms
or a Superior suite, there is the
same attention to detail.
Dog Friendly
This part of North Wales is a dog walking paradise. Set out directly
from the hotel and there are footpaths to suit all levels of fitness, be it
the beautiful ‘Queens Walk’, so called because it was Queen Victoria’s
favourite along the banks of the Dee or something more challenging in the
Berwyn Mountains.
Well behaved dogs on leads with responsible owners will be welcome
at Palé. We intend to allow dogs in some of the bedrooms and if
numbers allow, in one of the four reception rooms. The bedroom and
reception room layout at Palé allows us to satisfy both the dog loving
community and those who would rather not have dogs around them.
Some dog practical decisions have therefore been made, they certainly
don’t compromise the style and beauty of the rooms, but do allow
for muddy paws and wagging tails. The rear courtyard to Palé will
be their entrance, it has a beautiful original tiled floor that is easily
washable, this, in turn leads to a rear set of stairs making access in
and out to their rooms very easy. There will be a dog washing station
behind the courtyard and we will provide dog robes for the dogs to
use while they stay with us. There is no doubt that there are many
dog walkers out there that love luxury for themselves and a genuinely
warm welcome for their companions.
Palé is set in 50 acres of beautiful
grounds. They will be part of an ongoing
development, with our dream of providing
organic home grown vegetables for
the kitchen clearly in our sights. Our
gardening team have begun work
on the walled garden, once a former
carpark. The restoration of the water
gardens is a long term project. The
seasonal wonders of the woodland
walks, the ‘neolithic’ folly and waterfall
are worth a visit in their own right.
Palé Hall is situated in the Dee Valley
right in the heart of North Wales.
It is surrounded by immense natural
beauty and resonates with history.
Whether you like to hike, cycle or white
water raft it’s all here on your doorstep. If
your passion runs to fishing or shooting
then that is here too, the Dee being the
best fishing river in Wales. If driving is your
passion, then look no further, Wales has
magnificent roads, the Evo Triangle being
close by.
If history stirs you, then visit the myriad
of Castles and stately houses in the area,
always remembering that with Palé you
will be staying in one of the finest houses
in Wales.
