When you observe Matthew 27 and 28, focus on
The Book of Matthew
A Note from Kay
When you observe Matthew 27 and 28, focus on marking
the following:
4 references to Jesus (including pronouns) in yellow
4 Put a cross over every reference to the "cross" or to "crucifixion"
4 Put an upward arrow over any reference to "the resurrection" or
"rising from the dead"
4 Mark references to time with a green circle
4 green double underline
When you complete your markings look at what you learn from
marking the text in this way. Doing this will keep you from
missing what God wants you to know.

DAY
ONE
1. Your assignment for today is to observe Matthew 27. Note the various terms
used by others to describe Jesus in this chapter. Let the events capture your
imagination and your heart. Don’t just read it—picture it in your mind,
experience it…ask God to give you a sense of the fellowship of Jesus’
sufferings. Remember all this was for you…for each of us.
It is very tempting for us as we write this study to take you every step of the
way to the other Gospels in order for you to gain a more complete picture of
these events. However, we will do that in the study of another Gospel. Our
goal is to focus on what God wants us to know in Matthew about the Christ,
the son of David, the son of Abraham, the King of the Jews and “the kingdom
of heaven” which “is at hand.”
2. Record the theme of Matthew 27 on the At a Glance chart.
3. When you finish, spend time in prayer and thanksgiving for so great a
salvation…for so great a love…for so great a sacrifice.
DAY
TWO
“Crucify Him! …His blood shall be on us and on our children!”
“His blood shall be on us”—words spoken by a mob who in the incited emotion
of the moment never considered the significance of the words of their mouths.
Words spoken in passion or glibly can come back to torment us.

Matthew Part 2
Lesson 8, Chapters 27–28
1. What did they mean when they said, “His blood shall be on us and on our
children”? Read Matthew 27:22-25. According to the context, what were they
saying?
2. Read the following passages and note how they compare with Matthew 27:24-25.
a. Acts 3:12-20
b. Acts 4:24-28
c. Acts 5:27-32
d. Acts 7:51-53
3. Throughout your study of Matthew, you observed many references to the
fulfillment of Scripture. There are two definitive passages in the Old Testament
that give us an expectation of what the Messiah would experience when He
came as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world. We are going to
steep ourselves in the first of those today. How we pray God will use this
greatly to minister to you in the depths of your inner being.
Read and meditate on Psalm 22:1-18. Once again allow your mind to picture
the words which you are reading. They are not mere words David wrote but
prophetic descriptions of what the Christ, the son of David, would endure
over a thousand years later. Note the parallels between this Psalm and what

you observed in Matthew 26 and 27. For your convenience, Psalm 22:1-18 is
printed at the end of this lesson along with Isaiah 52:13–53:12, which we’ll use
tomorrow.
DAY
THREE
1. We want to begin today’s study by looking at the prophecies of Isaiah in
respect to the suffering of our Savior. Isaiah ministered as a prophet of God
about 739-681 B.C. And what did Isaiah write under the inspiration of God?
Read Isaiah 50:6-7 and Isaiah 52:13–53:12. Do you see any parallels between
Isaiah and Matthew 26–27? Mark them on the Observation Worksheets of
these passages which you’ll find at the end of this lesson.
2. Matthew 27:50 tells us Jesus cried out with a loud voice and yielded up His
spirit; yet he does not tell us what Jesus cried. Let’s look at some crossreferences and see what we can learn from them and their significance.
a. Luke 23:44-46—Do you see any parallels between this and Matthew
27:50?
b. John 19:30—Only John tells us of these words spoken by Jesus. Read the
verse, note below what was said, and then put it in context by reading
John 19:21-37. Reading this far will show you the parallel with Matthew
27.
c. Look up the meaning of the Greek word for finished in John 19:30. Write
out your insights.

89
Matthew Part 2
Lesson 8, Chapters 27–28
d. Now read Mark 15:33-39. What does it tell you in verses 37 and 38?
e. It was finished. Everything was accomplished that was necessary for your
salvation. The debt of your sin was paid in full. Look at what Colossians
2:13-14 says. Record your insights.
3. Now then, let’s look at the significance of the veil of the temple being torn in
two. Read the following verses from Hebrews 10 and summarize what you
learn from each.
a. Hebrews 10:4-7
b. Hebrews 10:10-12
c. Hebrews 10:14-18
d. Hebrews 10:19-22
4. Just to make sure we don’t miss anything, answer the following:
a. What did the veil in the temple represent?
90
© 2008 Precept Ministries International
Matthew Part 2
Lesson 8, Chapters 27–28
b. What did Jesus say in John 14:6, and how does this go with the veil?
c. What did Jesus do so you, so we, could have a clear conscience?
d. Does He need to do anything more? Why?
e. Do you believe God?
5. Now, Beloved, if you have time, bring today’s study to a close by reading
Isaiah 53 again. This time substitute your name for every our, every us.
Now can you thank the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for giving you so great a salvation?
Have you truly believed, truly received God’s gift of forgiveness of sins and eternal life in the
person of His Son? Is Jesus in you, the hope of glory? Does the Spirit of God bear witness
with your spirit that you are truly a child of God? If not, now is the time of salvation. Now
is the time to say, “God, I believe that Jesus Christ is your Son, the only Savior, the only
One who can give me forgiveness of sins through His death on my behalf and I receive Him
now as my Lord, my God, my Savior. Thank you for the gift of eternal life.”
You might want to write your name and the date after the prayer if it happened today. And
let us be the first to say, “Welcome to the family, Beloved.”

DAY
FOUR
The grave was secured. Sealed. And then at the dawn of day….
You are about to observe your final chapter of Matthew and you are to be
congratulated, faithful one. You have persevered. You have finished what you
began. You have honored God by honoring His Word. We are so very proud of
you in the Lord. Thank you for allowing us to help you discover truth and go
deeper.
1. Do your observations on Matthew 28. It would be good to first take the time
to read Matthew 27:55-66 as it introduces Matthew 28. Make sure you mark
every reference to the resurrection (rise, risen). Record the theme on the At a
Glance chart.
2. Now what do you learn from observing Matthew 27:55–28:15?
a. What happened? List the events.
b. Why the sealed tomb? Who is involved in this cover-up? What is the end
result of the cover-up?

DAY
FIVE
As you complete your last day of assignments from this study on Matthew, ask the
Lord to give you understanding of the vital truths found in Matthew 28 and how
these truths affect your life.
1. Begin by reading Matthew 28 again.
2. How important is the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Let’s stop and give careful
consideration to this question by some cross-referencing. Look up the
following verses, check out their context, and then record what you learn
about the resurrection.
a. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21
b. Romans 4:25
c. 1 Corinthians 15:12-22—Read it several times. Watch the “ifs,” following
the reasoning carefully. This is a long passage; take it point by point and
you’ll get it and have your answer for those who say it doesn’t matter
whether or not Jesus was raised from the dead.
d. Acts 2:22-24

Matthew Part 2
Lesson 8, Chapters 27–28
e. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (Note the points of the gospel.)
There are many more scriptures we could look up in respect to the resurrection of the Son of
God; however, these are enough for you to understand how crucial it is that Jesus was raised
from the dead. It is an essential ingredient of the message of the gospel, and you will see it
stressed over and over again in the book of Acts.
3. Now how does the Spirit of God have Matthew bring his account of the
Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham, the Son of God, the Savior, the
King to a close? What is the final topic and how does Jesus lead up to it?
4. Read Matthew 28:16-20 again. Then list the answers to the 5 Ws and an H as
you interrogate the text asking: who, what, when, where, why, and how. See
how much you can discover.
5. Do you think Jesus’ words in 28:19-20 were meant only for the eleven—or
would they even extend to us? Why?
94
© 2008 Precept Ministries International
Matthew Part 2
Lesson 8, Chapters 27–28
6. If they extend to us, how are you doing?
7. Finally look up the following verses and record what you learn about the result
of Jesus’ commission of His disciples.
a. Acts 8:4-5, 12
b. And what did Paul do even as a prisoner in Rome? Acts 28:23-31.
8. Read what your commentaries say about Matthew 27-28 if you’d like.
Beloved of God,
You’ve discovered truth for yourself
You’ve gone deeper in your knowledge of Him as you’ve studied with
others who have also studied God’s Word for themselves . . . as “iron
sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17a).
Now DISCIPLE……
Take what you’ve learned, faithful child of God, and as you are going, wherever life takes
you, make disciples—introduce them to the Christ, the Son of God, the King, and if they
believe, have them identify with His death, burial, and resurrection in baptism; then teach
them to observe ALL He has commanded you—the whole counsel of the Word of God. Do
it in confidence, for Jesus Himself is with you even to the end of the age.
This is life in His Spirit! This is living for the King and His kingdom.
Blessings, beloved of God…see you in your next Precept course. Bring your disciple.

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.
O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but I have no rest.
Yet You are holy,
O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted;
They trusted and You delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
In You they trusted and were not disappointed.
But I am a worm and not a man,
A reproach of men and despised by the people.
All who see me sneer at me;
They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying,
“Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”
Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
Upon You I was cast from birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.
Be not far from me, for trouble is near;
For there is none to help.
Many bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
They open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring lion.

I am poured out like water,
And all my bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It is melted within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You lay me in the dust of death.
For dogs have surrounded me;
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
They pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me;
They divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

I gave My back to those who strike Me,
And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;
I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.

Therefore, I am not disgraced;
Therefore, I have set My face like flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.

Behold, My servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted.
Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
So His appearance was marred more than any man
And His form more than the sons of men.
Thus He will sprinkle many nations,
Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him;
For what had not been told them they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand.
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.

But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.

when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the
people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death;
and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate
the governor.
Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been
condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to
the chief priests and elders,
saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said,
“What is that to us? See to that yourself!”
And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and
departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to
put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s
Field as a burial place for strangers.
For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
“AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE
ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel;
AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER’S FIELD, AS THE LORD
DIRECTED ME.”
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned
Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him,
“It is as you say.”
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did
not answer.
Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they
testify against You?”

And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the
governor was quite amazed.
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people
any one prisoner whom they wanted.
At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do
you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called
Christ?”
For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message,
saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I
suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for
Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
But the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to
release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called
Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!”
And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all
the more, saying, “Crucify Him!”
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a
riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the
crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that
yourselves.”
And all the people said, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!”
Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he
handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and
gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head,
and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and
mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the
head.
After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put
His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon,
whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a
Skull,
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He
was unwilling to drink.
And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments
among themselves by casting lots.
And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.
And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read,
“THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and
one on the left.
And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads
and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in
three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from
the cross.”
In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders,
were mocking Him and saying,
“He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let
Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
“HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN
HIM; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him
with the same words.
Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth
hour.

About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI,
ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE
YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began
saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour
wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save
Him.”
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;
and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen
asleep were raised;
and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the
holy city and appeared to many.
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over
Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were
happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of
God!”
Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed
Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him.
Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and
Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named
Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate
ordered it to be given to him.
And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock;
and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went
away.

And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite

Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and
the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,
and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver
said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’
“Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third
day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to
the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be
worse than the first.”
Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you
know how.”
And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard
they set a seal on the stone.

And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord
descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat
upon it.
And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you
are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.
“He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place
where He was lying.
“Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and
behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him;
behold, I have told you.”
And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report
it to His disciples.
And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and
took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.
Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My
brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the
city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.
And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together,
they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,
and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him
away while we were asleep.’
“And if this should come to the governor’s ears, we will win him over

And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this
story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day.
But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which
Jesus had designated.
When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been
given to Me in heaven and on earth.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with
you always, even to the end of the age.”
