Measure E-nough Already

Imagine if a two-year degree from
College of the Canyons cost
$483,423,125.
Hyperbole? Of course – it’s a
scenario for the total cost to the
entire community for all degrees
granted by the college for years to
come. But the number is used by
Measure E opponents to make a
point.
Measure E is a $230 million bond
measure that the voters will be
deciding during the June 7 primary
election. It allows the Santa Clarita
Community College District (aka
College of the Canyons, because
it’s a one-school district) to sell
$230 million in bonds for a wide
variety of upgrades and improvements. These include plans to
expand services to veterans,
upgrade accessibility, enhance
parking,
improve
earthquake
safety; construct, acquire and repair
classrooms, sites, facilities and equipment. This is all while continuing to
provide students with a high quality
education that will allow them to
transfer to four-year universities or be
trained for today’s job market.
It’s a very far-reaching and comprehensive measure. It calls for, among
others:
•Constructing new science classroom
buildings at the Valencia and Canyon
Country campuses, as well as building or upgrading existing STEM
(science, technology, engineering and
math) classrooms
•Adding a 1,000-space parking structure at the Valencia campus
•Constructing and/or upgrading
career counseling, vocational and
tutorial classrooms

Receives Death Threats

Last week, The Signal held a 25th
Congressional
District
candidates
forum, but Republican Jeffrey Moffatt
didn’t attend, and there is a chance he
won’t attend next week’s gathering,
either.
The reason: Death threats.
Moffatt’s wife, Star, sent the Santa
Clarita Gazette a text she received, poor
spelling and all: “I will kil u with
acident.”
She also said the family received a threat
against all members, including the
Moffatt’s son. Fortunately, she said, they
were able to track down who sent the
threats and forwarded the information to
the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Dept.
Palmdale Station.
But the emotional toll continues.

for law enforcement, firefighting, EMT,
nursing and other health-related careers
•Reconstructing or upgrading the student and veterans centers
•Various infrastructural improvements,
from electrical wiring to improved
plumbing, heating and cooling systems
to better roads and parking
Additionally, yearly reports are required by a seven-member citizens
oversight committee consisting of taxpayer, business and senior-citizen organizations. None of the money will be
given to the state, and none can be used
for administrator salaries or pensions.
According to proponent Cameron
Smyth, it will be paid via property-tax
assessment at a rate of $15 per $100,000
of a home’s assessed value.
An increase in enrollment fees is an
impossibility, because those monies are
not allowed to be used for construction.
“The state Legislature sets community
college enrollment fees, currently $46
per unit,” said Eric Harnish, vice president, Public Information, Advocacy
and External Relations at COC. “Colleges collect those enrollment fees, but
do not keep them. The revenue goes to
the state.”

Scott Wilk, COC Professor Claudia

Acosta and Don Fleming, co-chair of
the SCV Economic Development Corporation, say these bonds are needed
because enrollment is expected to climb
to 30,000 by 2026, and 4,000 students
today can’t get the necessary English,
math and science classes to transfer to
four-year schools.
“The growth of Santa Clarita has put a
pretty tremendous strain on students,”
Smyth said. “The goal of Measure E,
building out the Canyon Country campus and modernizing the Valencia campus, will help solve those problems.”
A vocal opponent is Saugus realtor
Steve Petzold, who says of the measure, “They’re building a big buffet for
everybody, but the people they need to
build it is us,” he said.
Petzold objects on several points. First,
he says, homeowners are still paying
off Measure M, a $160 million bond
issue from 2006 that helped expand
the two campuses and build the Dr. Dianne Van Hook University Center on
the Valencia campus.
Fifty-two percent of current COC
students live in COC’s district, which
means 48 percent do not, according to
Petzold.
As many as 4,000 students can’t get
their classes at COC, so they’re going
to Moorpark or other junior colleges,
according to Petzold.
“Only 29 percent of the college’s students live outside the Santa Clarita Valley and take classes at the Valencia or
Canyon Country Campuses,” Harnish
explained. “Historically, the state has
provided a 29 percent match on local bond funds, effectively paying the
facilities costs associated with out-ofdistrict students.”
“Our students are not given any preference. In-district students don’t get any
preference,” he said.
Smyth said that he has seen research
that says a large number of those outof-district students are in law enforcement and public safety and need the
training in those fields that the school
currently offers. He also knows that
some of those non-district students
work in Santa Clarita and find it convenient to take night classes. Additionally, he said, three out of every five
Hart School District graduates enroll at
COC within two years of graduating.
Petzold said he does not like having to
pay an assessment for people who don’t
live locally.
Petzold countered with research that
shows the average community college
district is used by 6.4 percent of every
1,000 people, but COC’s percentage is
5.8 percent.
“Why are we building additional facilities for students out of our district?” he
asked.
“Isn’t it ridiculous to tax everyone
for six percent of people using it?” he
asked.
Open enrollment is a statewide policy,
Harnish said. “California residents can
choose to attend any community college in the state, regardless of where
they live. Registration priority is also
set by the state. It’s part of Title 5, the
California Code of Regulations, which
we are required to follow. Priority generally is given to students based on the
number of units they have completed,
not where they live. However, local
students outnumber out-of-district
students at the Valencia and Canyon
Country Campuses by a large margin.”
Smyth said that he likes that COC asks
only for money when needed. So far,
Measure C in 2002 ($80 million), Measure M, and now Measure E, with a
total of all three: $470 million.

Actually, Jeff Moffatt said, he wanted to attend the forum, and if it
were up to him independently, he would have.
“In my thought, in my estimation, I’m a fighter by nature,” he said.
“But Star, when you look at it from that standpoint, what’s the point?”
The candidates again will debate on May 18 at the Canyon Country
Moose Lodge in an event hosted by the Canyon Country Advisory
Committee. Moffatt said he is looking into private security for protection. If it can be arranged, he said, he will attend.
Event host Alan Ferdman said he’d be willing to help, too, by trying
to get current or retired sheriff ’s deputies to attend, or to seat family members out of public view. Regardless, Ferdman said, incumbent
Steve Knight will not attend because the House of Representatives is
in session.
“This is the first time in my 16 years (with the CCAC) we’re not having
all the candidates,” Ferdman said.
Ferdman added that he hopes someone from Knight’s office will attend
to explain the candidate’s absence. Knight’s people said he’d be available in July, and Ferdman said he would invite the Congressman then
for a Q&A.
That would be after the June 7 primary, in which the top two votegetters advance to the November general election. If Moffatt were one
of those two, Ferdman said, he would be invited then, too.
This one just missed a little, but it still doesn’t work to sit on the white line.

Strickland Facing Fines
for Alleged Campaign

ormer State Senator Tony Strickland is facing up to $80,000 in
fines for alleged campaign fraud in
his unsuccessful 2010 bid for state
controller, according to official documents.
The Fair Political Practices Commission alleges that Strickland received
donations from three “large money”
donors: Matthew Swanson, president of Associated Feed & Supply
Co.; Andrew Barth, an investment
manager residing in San Marino;
and William Templeton, a Dallas
resident with ties to natural gas and
oil production, which reached the
campaign financing restrictions laid
out in law.
After the group reached the financing
limit, Strickland allegedly instructed
them to donate money to the Ventura
County Republican Party and to the
Stanislaus County Republican Party,
according to documents filed by the
FPPC. These donations were reportedly promised to the “Strickland for
State Controller” campaign.
A total of $65,000 was allegedly donated to Strickland in this way.
Although a spokesman for the FPPC
could not comment before a May
19 commission meeting on the subject, official documents filed by the
FPPC allege Strickland “purpose-

fully or negligently caused, or aided
and abetted, three persons to make
four contributions to Strickland for
(State) Controller … on the condition or agreement that the contribution would be ultimately contributed
to Strickland for (State) Controller
without disclosing the intermediary
and original contributor for the earmarked contribution.”
“(The committees were) not the true
sources of the contributions, and
the true sources of the contributions
were concealed,” according to documents filed by the FPPC.
When cases such as this come before
the FPPC, they make attempts to get
in contact with the parties involved.
In Strickland’s case, it appears he
failed to file a “Notice of Defense”
waiving his right to a hearing.
A defaulted case goes to commission
without a hearing, and the evidence
against the defendant — in this case
Strickland — will be presented.
Strickland faces up to $80,000 in
fines if the commission finds that the
evidence against him is true.
Steve Baric, an attorney for Strickland, declined to comment on the
allegations.

he Los Angeles Police Department’s Motor Transport Division
received statewide honors recently for
establishing an internship program that
gives automotive technology students
from College of the Canyons hands-on
experience working on one of the nation’s largest law enforcement vehicle
fleets.
The Motor Transport Division won
2016 Employer Program of the Year
honors from the California Internship
and Work Experience Association
(CIWEA), California’s leading professional association for educators and
employers dedicated to supporting internship and work experience programs
in higher education. The association
annually recognizes employers who
model exemplary internship and work
experience programs.
Gina Bogna, acting assistant dean of
COC’s Internships, Job Development
and Career Center, to nominate the Motor Transport Division for the award.
“I nominated LAPD because they took
such a vested interest in creating an internship training program,” Bogna said.
“LAPD not only took great care and
consideration to develop a program,
they want to commit to hosting at least
two students each semester. That creates
an amazing ongoing opportunity for
our automotive technology students.”
In addition, the internships may help
students land permanent positions with
the Motor Transport Division.
“The city is working to count the 80hour internship towards ‘points’ in their
application process as an added value,”
Bogna said.
Through the internship, students in the
college’s automotive technology program work on the Motor Transport
Division’s fleet of more than 5,100
vehicles. Under the direction of Commanding Officer Vartan Yegiyan, COC
students are now in their third semester
of internships with the LAPD.
Two of the students who successfully
completed the internship program have
since gone on to pass the City of Los
Angeles Equipment Mechanic exam,
and one of those students has already
accepted a position with the Motor
Transport Division.
Since the spring 2015 semester, nine
students have completed the 80-hour internship, which pairs them with a master mechanic for instruction and handson training in preventative maintenance
service, diagnostics and repair. Interns
also work on vehicle modifications and
collision repair. Yegiyan approached the
college to form the partnership last year.
It was an immediate success, prompting

Jim Lentini SCV Man of the Year
H

Jim Lentini was chosen by the Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year
Committee, made up of previous winners of the award.
He was nominated by the Rotary Club of Santa Clarita
Valley.
“We knew when he was nominated he was going to
win,” said Rotary Club President Lou Esbin. “One
of the foundational philosophies of Rotary is ‘service
above self,’ and Jim really epitomizes that.”
It was not Lentini’s first rodeo. He has been nominated
before, both by Rotary and by the Elk’s Club, and he
had no hint that out of the 13 men nominated, his name
would be the one called at this year’s gala.
Jim Lentini’s son, Nick, also a past president of Rotary,
presented his father with the award.
When asked about the reason his dad deserved to win,
Nick said, “Simply the vast amount of work he has done
in the community for the last 50 years.”
“He really does put the interests of veterans above himself,” Esbin said. “He’s
tireless, making sure they’re provided for. He works with congressmen, different
agencies, non-profits like Habitat for Heroes. We have the Rotary Garden up at
the Activities Center. He worked with Harry Bell and the Harry Bell Memorial
Foundation too, as well as working with the city on the Veterans Plaza in Downtown Newhall.”
While he carries the mantle until 2017, Jim plans to continue like he always has. His volunteerism goes on, including
his role as Veterans Affairs Service chair for Rotary of SCV.
“It makes you feel appreciated for doing good work for others, and the community will support the programs you find
important to the citizens of SCV and our veterans,” Jim said.
The new Man of the Year has been involved in numerous
local non-profit groups, embracing leadership on many occasions. He has also taken it on the road, including a Rotary

and visited villages of indigenous people in the country.
But here in town or anywhere else in the world, when it
comes to the award winner’s commitment to service, Lou
summed it up best when he said, “Jim Lentini is always
there.”
Jim is perhaps best known for his work with veterans.
Having served in the U.S. Army in Korea and as a member of the military police, Jim takes every opportunity to
meet the needs of men and women who served. The Rotary Garden above the
Aquatic Center and Habitat for Heroes are a few examples.

Sports Highlights
Baseball
Saugus shut out Hart, 17-0, in their latest game. The Centurions scored 10 runs
in the fourth inning. Lindsay Clare was 2-for-2 with three RBIs for Saugus.
The Valencia baseball team has won at least a share of the Foothill League title
with one week left in the regular season.
Valencia is riding a seven-game winning streak. The Vikings have two games
against West Ranch this week. One win over their Foothill League rival and Valencia will capture its first outright league title since 2011.
Valencia swept Golden Valley last week 7-3 in a pair of games, making five wins
in a row over Foothill League opponents. Tyler Erne was 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
Ben Fariss was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
West Ranch and Canyon are tied for third place in the Foothill League standings,
with 4-4 records. The third-place finisher will earn an automatic playoff berth.
West Ranch beat Canyon, 12-3, and has won three of its past four Foothill
League games. Jessica Harper hit two home runs in the game for West Ranch.
Valencia wraps up the regular season against Canyon and Hart.
Saugus plays West Ranch and Canyon in its final two games.
West Ranch is home for its final two games, against Saugus and Golden Valley.
Valencia’s seven-game winning streak started on April 22. The Vikings beat Saugus, 12-2. Valencia won two games against Canyon and two more against Golden
Valley. The Vikings also beat Esperanza and Thousand Oaks during the streak.
Canyon is home for its final two games, against Valencia and Saugus.
The West Ranch baseball team has put together a little winning streak to move
up to second place in the Foothill League standings. The Wildcats still have a
shot at a share of the league title, but they will have to sweep Valencia in their
two games this week.
The CIF Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs begin this week. West Ranch
won the Foothill League championship with a perfect 10-0 record and earned the
No. 4 seed in the Division 2 playoffs.
West Ranch has won three games in a row and 11 of its past 12 games. The Wildcats’ last three wins are against Foothill League opponents. They swept Canyon
and beat Saugus, 11-2, during their recent win streak.
Hart surged in the past few weeks to move into third place in the Foothill League
standings. The Indians have won five of their past six games and are a game behind West Ranch, for second place in the Foothill League standings.
Hart’s latest win, 1-0, over Saugus was crucial. Saugus and Hart were battling for
third place in the league standings. Hart swept Saugus last week. Brendan Henry
came through in both games for Hart.
Henry started and threw six shutout innings against Saugus in the 1-0 win. He
gave up four hits, struck out three and walked none.
Saugus starter Jacob Lopez was equally impressive, tossing a complete game. He
gave up only three hits, struck out eight and walked two.
Softball
The Valencia and Saugus softball teams are tied for first place in the Foothill
League standings, with two games to play.
Both teams have 7-1 records in league. The battle for the Foothill League crown
comes down to the next two games.
Valencia is coming off a 17-2 win over Golden Valley. Valencia hit four home
runs in the game. Erin Andris hit two home runs and Alley Johnson hit a grand
slam.
Volleyball
West Ranch will be home for its first-round match against Milikan of Long
Beach, the fourth-place team from the Moore League.
Valencia opens the playoffs with a home match against Torrance, the secondplace team from the Pioneer League.
Saugus is on the road to open the playoffs. The Centurions take on Oak Park,
the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 playoffs and the reigning Division 2 champion.
Track and Field
Golden Valley’s Azaria Hill won four events at the Foothill League championships. Canyon’s Steven Arrington won three events at the league finals at College
of the Canyons.
Hill won the 100 meters in 12.29 seconds and the 200 meters in 25.33 seconds.
It was the third time in her high school career that she swept the 100 and 200
meters at the Foothill League championships. She was also on the 4x100 relay
team that won in 48.50 seconds and the 4x400 relay team that won in 3:58.85.
Golden Valley’s Lonyaa Merriweather won three events at the league finals. She
won the 400 meters and was on the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Teammate
Bianca Tinoco won two events, including the 800 meters, and she was on the
4x400 relay team.
Arrington won the 100 meters and 200 meters. He was also on the winning 4x100
relay team. He won the 100 meters in 11.16 seconds. He won the 200 meters in
43.16 seconds.

College of the Canyons ‘Fast Track’ Program
Helps Locals Launch New Careers
T
he latest graduates from the College of the Canyons ‘Fast Track’ program prove that with the
right training, you can go from being unemployed to
launching a new career in just seven weeks.
Offered by the COC Economic Development
Division, the Fast Track program is a collection of
intensive courses geared toward entry-level skills
training and professional certifications that prepare
students for a variety of fields. It includes CNC
(computer numerically controlled) manufacturing,
where operators program and control machines that
shape metal into parts for a wide range of industrial
and aerospace applications.
Fast Track was designed to train people with
no previous experience for work in a new field,
although a few students who already work in CNC
are looking to upgrade their skills.
“We’ve had everyone from bartenders to Starbucks
baristas to people that haven’t worked in five
years,” said Joe Klocko, the recently retired dean of
Economic Development at COC. Klocko described
the Fast Track program in a nutshell as “short-term,
intensive training that would give someone the skills
to find a better job.”
The 280-hour, seven-week CNC program is divided
into classroom and hands-on time to teach students
the skills they’ll need on the job. Safety protocols,
blueprint reading, shop math, and machining their
own parts are among the topics.
Students are taught in COC’s machining lab
by experts trained to educate adults in CNC
machining, and utilize traditional textbooks
alongside a scientific calculator, online toolset,
and machinist’s measuring implements. Upon
completing the program, students earn a CNC
Machining Certificate of Completion and National
Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
Program graduates are highly sought after by local
companies, earning up to $20 per hour after gaining
on-the-job experience.

The next Fast Track cohort will begin Monday,
Sept. 12, with additional classes scheduled to start
throughout the year. Admission is based on application, and enrollment fees are waived for students
who are currently unemployed.

Mother Each Other?

A
nother Mother’s Day has come
and gone. The first part of my
Mother’s Day I was in grad school,
working in my dissertation formulation
class. The last part of the day was celebrated with flowers, hugs and dinner,
cooked by my husband and shared with
two of my three children. Our oldest
child was studying for exams in Northern Cal. I am proud to be the mom of
three terrific kids. I am grateful that
they turned out so well, despite my imperfections and theirs.
“Mother and motherhood” are ideas.
They are relationship titles that define
familial functions and jobs, and are experienced through all cultures across
the globe. Our relationship to “mother,” is collective, and yet unique, at the
same time. “Duh!” you say, “Everyone
had a mother.”
Yes, that’s true enough, but everyone’s
experience of “mother” is different.
Some of us were blessed to have a
mother who loved and cared for us,
supported us as we were growing, and
encouraged us to go out and create
our own lives. Some people grow up
with marginal support, have unhappy
mothers, and experience antagonistic
relationships with their mothers. Some
mothers are abusive or detached. Some
women want to be mothers and are illequipped; some want to be mothers
and cannot; and some have motherhood culturally imposed upon them.
One thing is certain – all mothers are
human, complete with imperfections
and troubles of their own.
Some people never knew their mothers. The Dave Thomas Foundation for
Adoption writes, “There are 423,773
children in the U.S. foster care system;
114,556 of these children are available
for adoption. Their birth parents’ legal
rights have been permanently terminated and children are left without a family.” Some children in foster care are
fortunate. They are adopted and raised
by loving parents. Some of us have lost
our mothers early, and some of us are
caring for our mothers as they age.
One thing I know for certain, the relationship we have, or don’t have, with
our mothers will affect us our entire
lives. It is the first relationship that we
form, and fundamental to who we are
as people, and to all our relationship experiences in the world. The hardest part
about the idea of “mother” is acknowledging that we can never fully embody
the perfect mother. That huge role is
filled by flawed human beings and the
job comes with no training or handbook that could ever give you more
than an inkling of what is to come.
The attributes of “mother,” love, compassion, acceptance, nurturing, forgiveness, guidance and comfort, are among
the most important for human fulfillment and happiness. Since no one has
been, or had, the “perfect mother,” I
would like to suggest that we offer these
gifts to one another everyday, any way
we can, in the way we interact, communicate, conduct business, and go about
our daily lives. Let’s treat each other
and the Earth with these principles and
see what problems might be solved.

M
uch like a season of my favorite
shows, “Game of Thrones” or
“House of Cards,” this election cycle
has already seen a multitude of ups,
downs, surprises and cliffhangers.
And we’re still quite far from the actual election.
And like any good writer of drama
knows, whether it be television, movies, books or political theatre, there
has to be drama and conflict to keep
the story interesting. But for a story
to be truly great, there has to be more
than just the good vs, evil drama;
you need side stories with their own
conflicts, an underdog’s triumphant
victory, a love interest, an interesting
backstory and, of course, a twist.
I’m pretty sure we can all agree that
most of those prerequisites have been
met for this season of “The Tragedy
of U.S. Elections,” but there is one
story line that keeps surprising me:
The once-great victor who made an
error, yet refuses to correct his ways
and find redemption.
The RNC – this character that was
once a wise and mighty bastion of
freedom from government oppression,
intrusion into the lives of her citizens,
and vast amounts of economic waste
in an ever increasing government –
chose not to listen to its constituents
in the end of the W presidency and
leading up to the 2008 campaign.
Instead of listening to a populace
who screamed from the rafters that
they were tired of war (civilians and
soldiers alike) and scared of the ever
increasing debt from it, they chose to
put forth a symbol of the military industrial complex. He may have served
his country well during his time, but
has since been one of the leading
forces to create, fund and arm ISIS
in a glorious misunderstanding (and
choosing not to listen to advisors) of
the modern war and environment he
was in.
In that campaign, the public had become so tired of what was going on in
the country that they elected a young
senator with little national political
experience who spent all of his time
in office campaigning for the presidency. But the people didn’t care. The
only thing they truly cared about was
doing away with the status quo.
They say those who forget history are
doomed to repeat it, and from Karl
Rove’s multiple failures in college, it
seems obvious the RNC didn’t do well
in their history lessons. It’s proven every time I hear a Fox commentator or
establishment RINO claim they just
can’t believe Trump is going to be the
nominee.
The RNC chose not to learn from
their mistakes in 2008, and instead repeated them again, almost verbatim,
in 2012. They had a chance to put Dr.
Ron Paul on the ticket, which current support for Bernie Sanders shows
may have been a very wise idea to
pull a substantial amount of support
from left-leaning independents. But
they wanted their establishment and
lobbyists to be happy, which Dr. Paul
was definitely not going to do. So they
chose to lose.
And now every time I hear of another Republican politician, talking
head or mouthpiece decrying Trump
and doing everything they can to bad
mouth him despite the results from
the primaries, all I can do is shake my
head in disbelief that they still haven’t
learned their lesson.
Unfortunately, I don’t see this movie
having a happy ending where the
main character finally sees the error of his ways and repents. I see the
RNC as Apollo Creed in “Rocky 2,”
who is going to keep trying the same
thing until he’s finally beaten to death.
And yes, I did use that reference on
purpose, because in this case as well,
we have a sizable Russian on the other
side of the rope laughing as we fall to
the mat.

Puppeteer at ARTree Speaker Series

anta Clarita resident Allan Trautman does a
wide range of performing, including his work
as a puppeteer. At this month’s ARTree Speaker
Series he will talk about the evolution of hand puppetry from stage to computer, and will also show
guests some of the techniques and challenges
that go into creating and performing with complex characters made from wood, fur and pixels.
Trautman is an Emmy-nominated performer and
the lead puppeteer and instructor for The Jim
Henson Company. His film and TV credits include “Muppets from Space,” “Babe,” “The Country
Bears,” “Dr. Dolittle,” and the new live action feature film, “The Jungle Book.” The public is invited
to this behind-the-curtain look at what goes into
creating 21st century puppetry.

It’s No Wonder:
It’s no wonder Hillary lost in West Virginia this week,
after remarks like this from her and Obama.
“We’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies
out of business.” (Hillary)
“If somebody wants to build a coal power plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going
to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s
being emitted.” (Obama)
That’s just great; let’s pile all kinds of regulations on a
crucial energy industry, putting thousands of people
in West Virginia out of work, attempting to wipe out
an industry you think is killing the earth. Talk about
selfish, self-serving ignorance while not caring about
ruining the lives of families. It’s disgraceful.
Pray About This:
Thumbs up to Mayor Bob Kellar for not giving in to
critical cries he should not attend the prayer breakfast
last week. He was there, as he said he would be, and
made a short, but moving, statement. I have to tell
you, I do not understand the gnashing of teeth that
occurs every year the event rolls around. This breakfast is held in Santa Clarita annually on the National
Day of Prayer, with similar events held all over this
nation.
What puzzles me are the seemingly ignorant comments that are thrown out leading up to the event.
I’m not saying the folks making the statements are
ignorant; I’m commenting on their ignorance about
what actually takes place.
Examples of quotes from various news sources:
“(I)t … biases you in your position on the school board to
have you (sic) views against homosexuals and transgendered
people.” (directed to Joe Messina, Hart School Board
member who privately organizes the event each year).
“The event is not to recognize a day of prayer, it’s to espouse
hate.” “These people don’t know what they’re in for or what
they’re attending.” You need to eliminate hate from the program and make the subject matters and speakers welcome to
the community as a whole.”
“(Name left out) is choosing to attend, despite forewarning about the political nature of the event and its ties with
hatemongering conservatives.” “Others raised issues with
the $25-per plate event and its Christian financiers’ offensive
keynote speakers.”
OMG (oh my goodness), how in the world these perceptions came about, I do not know. I have attended
this breakfast numerous times over the years (including this one), and there has never been (as Obama
says about the IRS scandal) one smidgen of what these
critics are alluding to.

people could have put Trump where he is today. I’ll
tell you fools why: BECAUSE YOU’RE A BUNCH
OF WIMPS! What’s scary and sad is you don’t have
a clue! You guys think you’re God’s gift to the conservative movement, when all you are is democrat
kiss butts.
Real conservatives are sick and tired of you giving in
to the other side on all kinds of crucial matters after
you tell us you will stand up and fight to the bitter
end. Well, the end has been bitter all right, with you
crumbling like balsa wood under a rock. Now millions are
turning to a guy who is not the best face of what we
have been yelling for, but he is the only one in sight
that gives us any hope of fixing what you guys have
hypocritically screwed-up! To rub salt in our wounds,
you are now acting like sniveling kids who didn’t get
their way and can’t stand that things didn’t go the way
you wanted them to. So now you want to mess things
up even more as you selfishly sabotage the only shot
of accomplishing what you were too chicken poop
to do!
And Another Thing!
Hey, you establishment types, see if any of these issues sound familiar, because they are some of the
ones Donald is ready to tackle as soon as he takes
office.
*Kill many of Obama’s executive orders (on day one).
*Cut individual and corporate tax rates significantly.
*Immediately reduce choke holding regulations on
businesses.
*Simplify the tax code.
*Strengthen a depleted military.
*Make major cuts in spending to reduce the monster
deficit.
*Repeal Obamacare; make sweeping changes in
health insurance laws, enabling free market competition.
*Fight against cuts in social security and Medicare,
instead allowing an improving economy to save the
programs.
*Crush ISIS once and for all.
*Initiate sweeping illegal immigration reform.
Tell me, Republicans, which of these you don’t want
to see happen. If you remember; a lot of these issues
are the ones you said you would take care of as soon
as you got control of the House and the Senate. You
got control of those and still got your butts kicked.
Then you said you need control of the White House
also to get things done, but now you’re trying to circumvent the system of getting our guy in the White
House. It’s bewildering. Please WAKE UP and
GROW UP! Where I come from, we have a saying
for folks like you: “You would screw up a ...”

There has been nothing but positive Christian and patriotic messages espoused by people on the podium,
and the people in attendance all seem united with the
same general belief system. That system, as part of
this event, does not carry one iota of the “hate” or “hatemongering conservative talk.” Nor have any of the keynote speakers ever “been offensive.”

this is a hate event to please attend next year, because

Letters to the Ranter:
There’s something called a false dilemma. Not supporting
Trump does not by default mean one supports Clinton. Many
conservatives just don’t feel he is fit for office and doesn’t have any
real conservative values. That doesn’t mean they think Clinton is
fit or that she shares those values either. But they can’t in good
conscience back someone who so whole heatedly stands against
conservative principles and speaks about actively weakening US
on the world stage.
Trump in all likelihood isn’t going to win. The republican
establishment is quite aware of this. I think most are willing to take
a mulligan on this one rather than further erode their legitimacy
as the conservative leadership by risking backing someone who in
all honesty makes incredibly dangerous statements whether or not
that’s what he truly believes or not. How weak will conservative
leaders look after trump has lost, and after he has made statements
and acted in such a way that goes against nearly everything
conservatives stand for, not only in principle, but in terms of basic
values regarding liberty, regarding just basic decency? You’re
thinking too small here -- though that tends to be an issue with
you. You’re missing the long game here. You’re strategy will only
further fracture the republican base. A strategy like yours loses the
war and not only the battle. Wouldn’t you rather the republican
party have a chance at winning a general presidential election
within the next 20 years?
So go ahead and conflate conservatism with childishness. It isn’t
childish to accept that Trump does not in any way represent true
conservative views. It isn’t childish or being overly emotional
to understand that backing the man only further devalues
conservatism as a viable political choice. The big government
neocons have already done plenty enough to turn voters away. Do
republicans really want to be known as the party know-nothings,
as hypocrites, as mindless lemmings willing to ignore their very
core beliefs to win an election that as of now seems impossible to
win anyhow?
BTW -- I often read these headlines of yours and think to myself
well that sounds like it’s only partly true or probably bullshit. I
figured I’d investigate the first one this week. It took me two
minutes to find the original FDA press release which states “The
$35.7 million campaign is funded by user fees collected from the
tobacco industry, not by taxpayer dollars”. All it took was clicking
the link Fox got their source from, and then clicking the link on the
original article which took me to the actual press release. Kind of
funny that part is left out of the article though huh? You can’t be
taken seriously if you lack have the intellectual rigor or honesty
to investigate something which should take all but two minutes to
do. A better question might be, would that money be better spent
on treating those with health problems rather than on prevention?
Or learn perhaps if such prevention is even at all effective? But it
seems none of it is coming from the taxpayers. I think something
you might want to learn Doug, is that it’s best not to believe in
things being true simply because they fit cohesively with how you
want them to. The world is far less black and white than the one
you seem to perceive. If you want to have any voice worth listening
to, then perhaps work on improving your integrity. (No name

says. “They’ve made some advances, but in the
scheme of things, it’s still the same.”
Wright says he works on anywhere from one to
three hybrid cars per week at G & M, mostly because the SCV has so many commuters. He is
ASE certified, which means he has passed the
testing required by the non-profit National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.
The owner of G & M Auto Repair believes in his
work enough to stand by every repair, with a guarantee that matches the life of the parts.
“I stand behind everything I do, 110 percent,”
said Wright, a Canyon Country resident who has
worked in the auto repair industry for two decades.
When he says his guarantee matches the life of the
part, Wright means it. In some instances it’s three

is why I am so busy,” said Wright. “I have a very

technology,” said Wright. “I send the guys off to
classes. I read all the service bulletins that come
out daily from all the different manufacturers. It
keeps me on top of everything.”
His experience has shown that some Toyota hybrids can get up to 250,000, or even 300,000 miles,
before the battery fails.
How do you get the most miles from your car’s
engine? The business owner boils it down to one
thing: maintenance.

take care of you.”

West Ranch Students Become Stock Market Club Champions

or the second year in a row, members of the West Ranch High School
Stock Market Club are World Investment Champions. The competition,
which included more than 500 teams from all over the world, had entries from
Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, China and India, was held at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia.
on both qualitative, quantitative analysis, articulating their investment strategy,
creativity and, of course, their presentation.”
This year’s competition started in December with the finals, held on Saturday,
April 30. The investment competition’s objectives were for students to act as financial
analysts and compete against other teams
for the account of Jack Abraham, a Wharton graduate. They were to design a diversified portfolio of investments for a 30-year
horizon and invest $100,000 in an online
trading and investment simulator. Students
also developed an investment strategy and
conducted a thorough analysis of both the
industries and companies in their portfolio
recommendation. Project objectives were
for students to learn teamwork, communication, risk, diversification, company analysis, industry analysis and investing. Student teams that moved onto the final were
to analyze one stock from their portfolio as
a case study along key points from their previous report.
“This year we were fortunate to have a tour from Sandy London-Gedalje at
Amgen,” Cox said. “Students can study the
annual reports and research the company,
but it all came together when they physically walked the grounds and were able to ask
questions. It gave our team a real competitive advantage.”
Fifteen teams were chosen to present a 10-minute final pitch in a high-tech
conference room atop Wharton’s Huntsman Hall to a panel of four industry
professionals from Aberdeen Asset Management on April 30. West Ranch was
led by team captain Drake Walker with fellow team members Tristan Esquivez,
Giann Espino, Sam Hassanzadeh, Gamin Kim, Garam Kim, Eunice Yi, and
teacher/advisor Linda Cox.
West Ranch’s case study highlighted the pharmaceutical company Amgen,
headquartered in Thousand Oaks.
“Our competition would also not have been
a success this year if it was not for our mentor help. I would like to thank Dan Block
from NWQ Investments and his team who
provided their time, energy and mentorship. Their assistance was invaluable,” Cox
said.
The West Ranch team is still raising money
on GoFundMe for their travel expenses to
the competition in Philadelphia. The students won $1,500 and had raised $370
before the competition. Their goal is to raise another $5,000 to cover their

he Placerita Canyon Nature Center Associates is a 501c3 non-profit
volunteer organization which assists the County of Los Angeles, Department of Parks and Recreation, in the operation and programming of
Placerita Canyon Natural Area.
The organization’s mission statement is: To inspire a passion, awareness and
respect for the environment, and to preserve and protect for future generations the
history and ecosystem of Placerita Canyon.
Placerita Canyon’s docent naturalists lead educational programs and nature hikes for elementary school groups from September through June

March – and is open to all people 18 years of age and older.

Duane R. Harte Park Dedication Ceremony
T
he public is invited to attend a dedication
event where River Village Park will be
renamed Duane R. Harte Park next week.
Crowds will join Santa Clarita City Council
members for the ceremony on Monday, May 23,
2016 at 3:30 p.m. at River Village Park, located
at 26401 Riverrock Way (at the intersection of
Santa Clarita Parkway and Riverrock Way).
The park is being renamed for the late Duane R.
Harte, who was well known in the Santa Clarita
community for being a committed volunteer,
community advocate and former chairman
of the Santa Clarita Parks, Recreation and
Community Services Commission. The Santa
Clarita City Council voted to rename the park
earlier this year.
“This is a deserving way for Harte to be honored
by a community he gave so much to,” said Mayor
Bob Kellar. “He was tremendously involved and
for years worked to make Santa Clarita a better
place.”
The soon-to-be renamed park opened to the
public in February of last year and is the 30th
City of Santa Clarita Park. The 29-acre park
encompasses 24 acres of open space in the River
Village community and five acres of developed
park site with a themed play area, group picnic
shelters, perimeter walkway and restrooms.

his Canyon High School junior won three
Foothill League championships recently.
He won the 100 meters in 11.16 seconds. He
won the 200 meters in 22.40 seconds. And he
was on the 4x100 relay team that won in 43.16
seconds.
Steven was also on the 4 by 400 relay team that
placed second to Valencia in 3:24.87. His season best 100 meters is a hand-timed 10.7. His
best time in the 200 this season is 22.12.
“Steven will be our team MVP, as he has scored
124 points so far this season, and our second
highest scorer is 80 points,” Canyon High
School Track and Field Coach Paul Broneer
said. “He has been this young team’s leader in
more ways than one. He works hard and is a
very competitive athlete.”

What Matters More
in Your Retirement
Account: Rate of
Return or Risk & Fees?

oes the rate of return
you receive in your
retirement account make
a big difference? Well, certainly whenever you experience the extremes of very high or very low, then it
can make an enormous difference. But what about in
the middle ranges of 3-10 percent?
In my opinion, it is always better to be careful and
weigh all of the factors that can impact your rate of
return, including the risk and fees you may have in
each account. Every one of them should be weighed
on their own merits and given the proper, objective
consideration. For example, there are retirement accounts that have as much as 3 percent per year in fees,
or more. That means if you have $100,000 in your
retirement account, it would be $3,000 per year! That
works out to an average of about $250 per month.
Sometimes the investment companies take money
out of your account on a quarterly basis, or every
three months. No longer do the investment companies have you write them a check on a yearly basis;
instead, they take it right out of your account.
Now, if your account is earning more than the fees
being charged each month or year, then you may find
it to be a good deal. It has been my experience that
more and more people with these types of accounts
don’t know how they work, much less the amount
in fees they are currently paying. Ask your financial professional for a list of all the fees you are being charged, then total them up from the time you
opened the account. After that, look at what you have
earned in your account. It will give you a good sense
of whether or not the account still fits your needs.
If you are retiring and withdrawing money from your
retirement account each month or year in order to
live, then you may want to consider what level of risk
you have in that account. For example, if the account
goes down in value when the market goes down, then
it is like having an additional cost each year. As you
get older, you may want to consider a safer approach
and have less risk in your retirement account, especially if that account can lose value when something
happens in the market that is out of your control.

Steve Michaels - Frantic Follies

efore the SCV Chamber of Commerce became
a more formal organization and made the decision that its prime function was all about business,
its leaders were as likely to promote community fun
as they were commercial fundamentals.
Believing that camaraderie was one of the greatest
business networking tools, chamber manager Viki
Rudolph welcomed realtor Betty Bardwell when
she approached her in 1981 with the idea of directing volunteers and professionals in a two-hour variety show dubbed “The Frantic Follies.” The show
was such a success that the following year Bardwell
enlisted the aid of show business veteran Steve Michaels to direct an even bigger and better production.
In 1982, Steve wrote lyrics for the show’s vignettes
and his wife Sandy choreographed the dance numbers – in particular, a 24-woman chorus line made
up of the valley’s leading matrons, which Bardwell
christened the Santa Clarita Valley Rockettes. Sizes,
shapes and dancing abilities varied in the chorus
line, but Sandy was able to coach the women so the
closing act came off with few hitches.
Who knew that inside each buttoned-down business
leader was a song and dance man (woman) straining
to burst free? Michaels went on to write scripts and
direct two more annual events. Each production got
a little more lavish than the last, raising the curtain
on our community’s burgeoning warehouse of show
biz talent.
The shows themselves were kaleidoscopes of color,
song, and humor that had political figures like then
Lieutenant Governor Mike Curb, Senator Ed Davis,
Assemblywoman Cathy Wright, and a variety of local judges mugging their way through skits alongside
SCV citizens.
Steve and Sandy were both seasoned summer stock
performers and moved away in 1996 to grace Las
Vegas with their talents. Eventually, their daughter,
Shannon, became a show business performer and
son, Shawn, settled into television production.

Steve was back in town last week, but his visit was
bittersweet. Sandy, his love and inspiration of 48
years, had recently passed away, and he was determined to turn heartbreak into something positive.
He met with College of the Canyons administrators
to establish a scholarship in Sandy’s name.
“The Sandy Award” is to be given to an aspiring
drama student who shows the most heart and dedication – or in Steve’s words, “passion, potential, and
perseverance.” A most appropriate way to honor
a woman who, though extremely talented herself,
humbly shunned the community spotlight to spend
countless hours behind-the-scenes, teaching stagestruck citizens the steps that would earn them enthusiastic applause from their peers.
There have been big changes in our valley since the
‘80s, yet Steve’s lyrics for just three of the eight neighborhoods featured in “The 1982 Frantic Follies” still
capture some of their unique characteristics.

Local 18-Year-Old Hikes 2,650-Mile Pacific Crest Trail

n April 1, 2016, Garret A. Hernandez, an
18-year-old who graduated from Golden
Valley in June 2015 and a longtime resident of
the Santa Clarita Valley, started at the border
of Mexico in a little town called Campo and
began to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).
The PCT is approximately 2,650 miles and
it goes from the Mexican border to Manning
Park, which is 7 miles into Canada. It goes
through California, Oregon, Washington, and
ends in Canada. It will take him 5-6 months to
complete the PCT.
Many local residents are unaware that the PCT
goes right through Santa Clarita and Agua
Dulce.
Garret has been preparing for this journey for
four years. In order to hike the PCT, he had to
apply for a permit, which gives him permission
to hike and sleep along the PCT from Mexico
to Canada. Hikers also have to apply for a
permit to cross the border into Canada, plus
Garret needed a campfire permit.
The cost to complete the hike is $4-$7,000,
Garret says, who saved money while working at the UPS Store on Golden Valley Road
in Canyon Country. He also saved all of his
birthday money and graduation money that he
received as gifts in order to pay for the trip. His
mother and father offered to help him, but he
said he wanted to accomplish it on his own.
It took several years of planning and researching equipment. The base weight of his backpack, which includes his tent, sleeping bag,
jacket, stove and the rest of his gear is 13.5
pounds. Once he added his food and water,
the pack weight was 35 pounds the day he
departed.
Along the way, he has to resupply and buy additional food and water in small towns, which
he comes to every 3-5 days. In areas where
there is no place to purchase food, Garret
shipped food in advance to local post offices
along the way, where workers hold the boxes
for him until he arrives to pick them up.
The stretch through Campo was 20 miles and
there was no water, so if he didn’t plan accordingly, he would have run out and been in big
trouble, as it is desert terrain.
Many hikers that Garret got to meet and hike
with have had to leave the trail due to injuries,
illness, and some have just plain quit, because
they didn’t anticipate it being so difficult.
Now fast forward a month and this week Garret is at mile 652. He is preparing to conquer
the Sierras next. This will be, by far, the hardest part of his journey.

Board Presentation of Options for Castaic High Construction
W
illiam S. Hart Union High School District Superintendent Vicki Engbrecht laid out three separate delivery method options for the construction of Castaic High School to the District’s Governing Board Wednesday
night.
While multiple delivery methods are available for public school construction,
the District has narrowed its options to three. Included in Wednesday’s Board
presentation were:

The project can use a model called “CM Multiple Prime,” in which the
scopes and schedule are developed and controlled by the construction
manager. In this case, all of the Prime Contracts are held by the district.
•
It can use the traditional design-bid-build model (General Contractor).
•
The project can be developer-built, which means Romero Canyon LLC
delivers a finished school to the Hart District. Cost and schedule impacts
would be at the risk of Romero.
•
Lundgren Management has been assisting the Hart School District for
the last six months with general oversight of the site development phase.
Shawn Fonder, vice president of Program and Client Services for Lundgren, says the site work is nearly complete.
“The primary goal is to build the best high school facility for the (William S.
Hart Union School) District and the Castaic Community,” Fonder said. “All
of the current project stakeholders are on the same page, in terms of working
towards this very important goal.”
“The Hart District Board’s selection of a delivery method for Castaic High
School continues to focus on the combination of cost, quality and timeline
to complete the construction of the school defined by our directives in 2010,
which began the current development process,” said Governing Board member
Steve Sturgeon. “We are confident the end result will meet the Castaic community’s and District’s long-term goals.”
Hart School District Governing Board President Robert Hall said this is an
exciting time for the Castaic community and the District with the school’s completion on the horizon.
“The decision on the delivery method will provide the district and the community with a clear path to completion,” Hall said. “Timelines will become
much clearer as we move towards fulfilling the promise of a high school for the
Castaic community. I personally look forward to welcoming our first students
to the campus in the near future.”
Those thoughts were echoed by Romero Canyon LLC project manager, Randy
Wrage.
“We’re literally in the home stretch toward construction,” Wrage said. “The
next 24 months should be a very exciting time for everyone in the community
and the Hart District, who has worked so hard to make this project a reality.”
The information provided to the board Wednesday was for discussion only.
Action by the board, choosing which of the three delivery methods they prefer,
could happen within a month.

Keeping Our Identities Safe in
this Day and Age
I
dentity theft is a crime that often goes unnoticed for
weeks, months, and even years, depending on the
audacity of the thief. It can be increasingly difficult
to protect oneself from identity theft, given the digital age in which we live and with how frequently our
personal identifying information is used. No one can
ever be 100 percent safe from ever becoming a victim
of a crime (especially identity theft).
A con-artist by the name of Maria Christina Johnson
was recently arrested and charged with several counts
of identity theft. Authorities allege that Johnson used
her looks to lure her targets on several popular dating
sites. When she was allowed to enter their homes, she
would locate personal identifying information and
steal it. She would then open lines of credit using said
stolen information and assume her victims’ identities.
All-told, Johnson is accused of fraudulently charging
over $250,000 on a variety of credit cards to fund her
extravagant lifestyle.
Apparently a career-criminal, Johnson has a criminal
record dating back to 1997 and spanning three states.
She has additional identity theft convictions in California dating back to 2011. Johnson is currently being
held in lieu of $2 million bond.
Protect your mobile device. There are a ton of apps
out there that allow us to effortlessly handle much of
our day-to-day business. From doing our banking to
paying our bills, much of this can be done without
having to leave the house. Unfortunately, if that mobile device falls into the wrong hands, so can access
to your bank account. Make sure you must enter a
pass code every time you pick up your phone to use it.
Don’t leave sensitive information out in the
open. What do you do when you receive your mail?
Do you open it immediately, handle whatever needs
to be handled, then shred the now useless paperwork?
Few people do. Bills and other mail often contain
sensitive information such as your SSN and bank
account numbers, but even when they don’t, they
can contain enough identifying info (name, address,
phone number) for a savvy ID thief to use to do a
great deal of damage. The best way to deal with correspondence that contains sensitive information is to
keep it someplace others won’t easily be able to ac-

A 50-year-old Santa Clarita woman was arrested for vehicular manslaughter, without

Castaic was charged with carrying a switchblade knife upon his person.
A 29-year-old electrician from Canyon
Country was arrested for corporal injury on
a spouse/cohabitant. A 27-year-old laborer
from Stevenson Ranch was arrested for
corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant.
An unemployed 40-year-old Canoga Park
woman and a 63-year-old retired Newhall
man were charged with battery against a
former spouse.
A 30-year-old truck driver from Tampa,
Fla. was cited for defrauding an innkeeper
by non-payment exceeding $400. A 26-yearold personal stylist from North Hollywood
was arrested for robbery. Two unemployed
Lancaster women – aged 21 and 19 – were
charged with theft of personal property.
A 38-year-old unemployed Saugus woman
was arrested for burglary.
A 22-year-old auto body shop employee
from Canyon Country was picked up for
acquiring access to a credit card in 4+
names within 12 months. And a 22-year-old
security officer from Sylmar was charged
with getting credit/another person’s ID.

Fifth Anniversary for Community
Gardens of Santa Clarita
his year the non-profit organization Community Gardens of Santa Clarita blooms
into its fifth year of providing the Santa Clarita
community with a place for residents to come
together and promote the benefits of locally
grown organic food that is environmentally
friendly, sustainable and cost effective.

“We’ve come a long way from when we started. We have many accomplishments to celebrate,” said the president of the Garden Council Executive Board, Gisa Seeholzer-Haggin.
“This garden is more than just a place to grow
food, it also provides economic, health and
educational benefits for the community.”
The City of Santa Clarita and the Community
Garden Council launched the project in 2011,
which now hosts a 134-plot spread of land located at Central Park, 27150 Bouquet Canyon
Road in Saugus. The garden enables residents
who sign up as members to enjoy their own
fresh, pesticide and preservative free vegetables, harvested from
their own rented plots.
Members can request
a 10-foot by 10-foot or
10-foot by 20-foot plot,
depending on the availability. Various herbs
and flowers are also
grown on the plots.
Over the past five years the Community Gardens of Santa Clarita has launched and contributed to many community projects, such as
the Western Bluebird Restoration Project, in
which they partnered with College of the Canyons and the Santa Clarita Environmental Education Consortium to hang bluebird boxes in
an effort to restore the population of Western Bluebirds.
The Community Gardens
also provides
educational
programming
for all ages at
little to no cost,
offering vegetable gardening
courses as well as age-specific programming
such as the “Little Sprouts” and “Little Gardeners” programs, which focus on teaching
kids the basics of gardening.
A few plots in the garden are raised above
ground to provide easy
access to all residents who are participating in
the project. The many residents who use the
plots range from beginning gardeners to those
with more advanced skills.
“For five wonderful years the Community
Gardens have been giving residents a means
of furthering their gardening skills with friends
and neighbors,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.
Garden members will be honoring the grand
milestone with a private celebration on Friday,
May 20.

Bike to Work Day Pit
Stops to Hydrate
H
enry Mayo Newhall Hospital has partnered with
the City of Santa Clarita to provide refreshments for five city
pit stops during the 13th annual
Bike to Work Day Challenge on
Thursday, May 19, 2016.
As in 2015 and previous years,
a cycling team from Henry
Mayo will participate in the
event. There were 17 team cyclists last year, and one
of the members won a
bicycle in the city’s
raffle,
according
to Wesley Wright,
team leader from
Henry Mayo.
“This is a great
event,” said Wright,
who has been riding his
bike to work every day since
2009. “There’s a sense of camaraderie, working together as
a team. It also helps people get
out and get some exercise while
exploring. There are over 40
miles of dedicated bike paths in
the City of Santa Clarita.”
According to GreenSantaClarita.com, last year’s Bike to Work
Day Challenge reported that
25 businesses and 225 bicycle
commuters participated in Santa Clarita. These efforts help
to enhance air quality, reduce
traffic congestion, and improve
personal health and fitness.
