Below are some general guidelines to narrow down your choices. As always, we’re here to help. Please call with any questions you may have. You can trust our experience to help you to make a more educated decision— no matter who you buy the tooling from. Many factors determine proper cutterhead selection. One of the most important factors is feed rate. Most small shops use a feed rate of 50 Feet Per Minute( FPM) or less and have, as a result, a single-knife finish. For this application, a Straight Bore cutterhead is most commonly used. Accuracy is limited to due the “slop” neccessary to physically fit the cutterhead onto the spindle shaft. The bore on the head is normally .001” to .002” oversized to accomplish an easier fit. The end result is that one knife in the head will be higher in the cutting circle; thus producing a single-knife finish. Many older “push-feed” machines, with feed rates from 35 to 250 FPM), use SelfCentering Sleeve (SCS) heads. This head incorporates a removeable sleeve that locks the head onto the spindle. Accuracy is again affected due to both the “slop” tolerence from the head to the sleeve, and also the “slop” from the sleeve to the shaft. This can result in tolerances of several thousandth’s of an inch. The condition of the head , and the machine’s spindle, is critical to produce quality material out of the moulder. These heads can be jointed, but extreme care must be taken not to over joint the knives. Hydro Lock head use is normally reserved to companies with high speed machines with the tightest of machine tolerances. In house grinding capabilities are a must to get the full benefit from the tooling. Hydro Lock heads use a pressurized sleeve to create a much tighter fit on both the grinder and the moulder. Hydro-Loc Tolerance 0,005mm (0.000196") The further use of the jointing process produces a cutter capable of increased feed rates because all knives are in the same cutting circle. This process uses an abrasive stone that strikes the knives while the head is rotating. Jointing actually “dulls” the knives, so care must be taken not to over joint the knives. SPINDLE TYPE AND CONDITION Jointed Heads Machines with standard bearings would normally use Straight Bore or SCS type heads. Machines with high precision (normally angular contact thrust) bearings (including outboard bearings) better justify the use of Hydro Lock heads. The condition of the spindle greatly affects the material produced. A spindle that has had a head “spun” on it , been de-burred, or sanded may be undersized( over .005”) for standard Hydro Lock heads to grip safely. A cutterhead could possibly distort due the “memory” of the steel sleeve. Newer “hardened” sleeves are designed to successfully span a larger gap, or even keyways, without distorting. The use of a Safety Locking Collar is highly recommended to reduce possible head, or spindle, damage resulting from a Hydro Head spinning on the shaft. See pages 19, 23, 30 and 34. Both the grinder and the moulder must be kept in top condition to produce an acceptable product. The moulder must be properly setup and aligned. This includes checking fences, tables, feed rollers for both alignment and wear. The vast majority of “tooling problems” are actually the result of a machine problem. A smaller percentage is the result of improperly specified tooling for the application. Only 5% of “tooling problems” are truly related to tooling. Proper operator knowledge and training is a very important factor more commonly overlooked than you might think. An operator that understands the nature of the tooling and machinery being used is better equipped to produce quality products. Cutting Chart for Hook Angles Cutting Angles The following chart represents generally recommended hook angles, knife marks per inch and feed rate and finish for different species of wood. Kind of Wood Knife Marks per inch Ash 11-14 Basswood 8-12 Beech 12-14 Birch 12-16 Cedar 8-12 Cherry 12-14 Cottonwood 8-12 Cypress 8-12 Elm (soft) 8-12 Fir 8-12 Gum 9-14 Hemlock 8-12 Hickory 12-16 Mahogany 12-16 Maple 12-14 Oak 12-14 Pine 8-14 Poplar 8-14 Redwood 8-12 Spruce 8-12 Sycamore 10-14 Walnut 12-14 Feed rate directly affects the finish quality of the work. If the rate is too slow, knives dull more quickly and burning occurs. For all jointed heads (Columns: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 knives) refer to the appropriate column. For unjointed heads, refer to column 1, because it is a single knife finish. R.P.M. CAN YOU REALLY AFFORD CHEAP TOOLING? Wadkin offers exceptional quality for the most affordable price! Your moulder is a large investment; it makes perfect sense to equip this valuable machine with only the highest quality tooling. But at what cost? Wadkin Cutterheads are simply the best value for your tooling dollar! We manufacture our corrugated moulder heads to meet or surpass the highest industry standards. We only use the highest quality materials to offer you a product designed for superior performance and life. CUTTERHEAD BALANCE: “The life and performance of your moulder hangs in the balance” ISO quality standards refer to G16 as being the industry standard for rotating tools. Wadkin moulder heads are dynamically balanced to G2.5, which is a substantially tighter tolerance. Example: A tool that is only 1 gram out of balance on a moulder spindle at 6,000 rpms is equal to swinging a 22 pound weight over your head! Can you afford excessive bearing and machine wear from out-of-balance tooling? BENEFITS: • Less Vibration • Longer Cutterhead Life • Better Finished Products • Extends Bearing Life BORE CONCENTRICITY “All the boring details…” For near perfect accuracy, Wadkin maintains bore concentricity of 0.000787 inches (20 microns) on all moulder heads. BENEFITS: • Quality Surface Finish • Dimensional Accuracy BORE TOLERANCE “The hole true and nothing but…” The ISO specified bore tolerance is 0 to 25 microns. Too tight a tolerance will make the cutterhead difficult to fit on the shaft. Too loose a tolerance results in a sloppy fit. Wadkin avoids these problems by tighter controlling of the bore tolerance to +5 to +20 microns. END SQUARENESS “Head and shoulders above the rest” The end face on any moulder head must be square to the bore to avoid major machine problems or damage. The end squareness tolerance on Wadkin moulder heads is 0.00039 inches (10 microns). The end-to-end parallelism is 0.000197 inches (5 microns). BENEFITS: • Better Tool Balance • Reduces Vibration • Faster Setup • Lessens Potential Spindle Damage • Increased Product Accuracy PARALLEL KNIFE SLOT SERRATIONS “Broaching the subject of corrugations” Wadkin achieves near-perfect parallelism and repeatability on all Hydro Bore cutterheads by “broaching” our head corrugations. The broaching process actually shapes the entire tool surface rather than using standard metal cutting tools to “CUT” the corrugations. FOUR times more precise than “CUT” serrations. BENEFITS: • Safer Knife Support • Improved Finish • Higher Concentricity • More Accurate Grinding and Jointing of Knives in the Head U.S Toll Free: 1 800-TOOLING (866-5464) • 1 (828) 628-4414 • Fax: 1 (828) 628-4490 Website: www.woodtechtooling.com • Email: sales@woodtechtooling.com Tooling Specialists For The Woodworking Industry Since 1985 21 Wadkin DS Cutterhead Range - Straight Bore The DS Range consists of standard straight bore heads for use on Wadkin, Weinig, SCM, and comparable single knife finish moulders made in the U.S.A., Europe, Japan and the Far East. First the Inventors…Now, the Innovators. Wisconsin Knife Works is the leader in tooling and production ideas as well as precision manufacturing of wood-working cutting tools. “Engineers To The Woodworking Industry” is not as much a slogan as it is a hard earned tradition. WKW was founded in 1926 and obtained a U.S. Patent in 1929 for the first “FingerJoint” cutterhead. Since that time WKW has continued to manufacture quality tooling for a variety of woodworking applications. WKW offers cutterheads to fit most common moulder applications. Available in Straight Bore, Hydro-Loc, Quick-Loc, Axial Constant and Welded Sleeve. Finger Joint heads and knives and Milled-to-Pattern heads and bits are only a few of the other specialized cutting tools WKW provides. (See pages 72 and 75.) Wisconsin Knife Works has manufactured woodworking knives for over seventy-five years. In fact, knives were the first and most important product as the name implies. For reliable, long lasting knives at a competitive price look to Wisconsin Knife Works, the #1 company for quality cutting tools. Precision grinding and machining to tight tolerances, heat-treating for long life, and custom machining for special knife patterns are just some of WKW’s capabilities. Knives are 100% inspected for tight tolerance, conformity, craftsmanship and material. Uniform thickness allows for reduced balance and set-up time. Wisconsin Knife Works has a diverse inventory of standard stock knives for immediate delivery. Custom knives made to order. WKW M-2 High Speed Steel, the Industry Standard Lumber and woodworking plants the world over specify M-2 High-Speed Steel knives to produce the finest finish cuts in planer, jointer moulder and tenoner operations. The consistent hardness and high molybdenum content give and excellent edge and allows for easy grinding. High-speed Steel is ideal for medium to long runs. Every facet of product quality is affected by it. The “Q” value is the woodworking industry standard measurement of relative balance quality, and a lower value means better balance. A “Q” of 0.0 means perfect balance and a “Q” of 16.0 is acceptable. Most tooling manufacturers use 16.0 as their goal but Weinig’s standard is much higher (“Q”=2.5). When you specify Weinig cutterheads you get less vibration, longer life and a more accurate finished product with better surface quality. Parallel Knife-slot Serrations It’s accepted practice to create Knife-slot serrations on the cutterhead with standard metal-cutting tools. But this can result in a waved surface and less than adequate support for the knife. Weinig creates serrations by broaching the surface using titaniumcoated tools. Broaching actually shapes the entire tool surface and provides near-perfect parallelism of individual serrations. This parallelism provides better knife support and exceptional surface quality of the finished profile. Bore Tolerance The industry standard ISO-specified tolerance for a cutterhead with a 1-13/16" diameter bore is 0 to +25 microns. But if the tolerance is 0 microns, the cutterhead will be difficult to install on the moulder’s spindle shaft, and if the tolerance is 25 microns, the tooling can be too loose on the shaft. Weinig avoids these problems by more precisely controlling the bore diameter tolerance at +5 to +20 microns. Bore Concentricity If the cutterhead bore is not concentric to the cutterhead body, product dimensional accuracy and surface finish suffer. Weinig hones the bore with two passes (not just one) for near perfect accuracy. End Parallelism A large tolerance in cutterhead end parallelism can cause out of balance running, less spindle strength and reduced product accuracy. The Highest Quality Materials Tools rotating at high speed are subject to enormous deformation stresses. That’s why Weinig cutterheads are manufactured from heat-stabilized steel and then tested at twice the rated RPM. We make sure all components are manufactured from appropriate materials and meet our exceptional quality standards. 31 U.S Toll Free: 1 800-TOOLING (866-5464) • 1 (828) 628-4414 • Fax: 1 (828) 628-4490 Website: www.woodtechtooling.com • Email: sales@woodtechtooling.com Tooling Specialists For The Woodworking Industry Since 1985 32 WEINIG CUTTERHEADS Wood Tech Enterprises, Inc. is pleased to offer original Weinig tooling to our customers.
