The city is steeped in history, yet today is a growing cosmopolitan area. Providence lies one mile south of Logan, and shares many of the advantages of the larger town, while maintaining its more rural character. Metro Salt Lake City: Utah’s capitol city lies in a valley east of the Great Salt Lake and is surrounded by mountains. Home of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (a.k.a., the LDS or Mormon Church), the city is also home to the University of Utah, museums, and businesses with local, as well as global influence. Local activities include theater, festivals, historic tours, rock climbing, fishing, bird watching, camping, hiking, boating and more. Salt Lake City and the surrounding cities provide shopping areas, parks, and access to numerous recreational activities. Visit competition venues used during the 2002 Winter Olympics or take in a game at one of the area’s four professional sports teams. A trip east through Logan Canyon takes one to Caribbean look-alike Bear Lake, or travel west to visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the location of the meeting of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads which completed the transcontinental rail link. The Historic Manti Temple (one of the first built by the LDS Church), Pioneer homes and museums, as well as those of contemporary art are located throughout the area.
